If you're near Union Station and you're:
1) Having a bad day
2) Leaping off your diet wagon
3) Craving fries and a dog real bad
4) In search of glowing green relish for a scavenger hunt
Then Gold Coast Dogs inside Union Station is for you!
Tip: they have the best fries. True Story. They are like, double fried, or something. Double crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, the best! My dog order is a Chicago Dog w/everything hold the tomato, and like any good dog stand, you can order your choice of cooking method: charred is my fave. Service here is friendly and fairly quick.
Bow wow wow, yippe yo yippe-A!

Hot dogs are good but the true gem is the gyros sandwich. Pure heaven. I've tried gyros at other places but nothing comes close to the ones at Gold Coast. Get it with everything, even the sauce. You will not be disappointed.
So on my trip back into suburbia hell, I had to stop in and grab one for the ride home. The poor sandwich never had a chance and didn't make the train ride home as I devoured it down. Mmm, I love these gyros.
My son and I were taking the train for a little trip out of town and missed lunch so were in need of some food before departing on a few hours trek. Â Union Station food court is moderately impressive with decent choices. Â He wanted a dog. Â And I hadn't had GC Dogs since working in the Lyric Opera building about a decade ago so was all too ok with his choice. Â
The dog itself was exactly as I remember, which is to say, excellent! Â Perfect char with all the right toppings. Â Problem was the bun which was a bit stale, cmon?? How is that possible when I assume they get those in on the weekly if not the daily. Â Anyway, apart from that, it satisfied my Char dog craving which comes about a few times a year.
The ONLY thing I can review here is the char-grilled dog combo meal. Â Why? Â Because it was so freakin' good that I have to order it every time I'm here. Â
I'm almost ashamed to admit that I like this place. Â I won't lie - I'm a girl who loves a great Chicago-style dog. Â One day, while picking my daughter up from the train, she begged me to try Gold Coast dogs. Â I begged her back to wait til we got home so we could go someplace respectable like Wiener Circle but no, she was determined.
"Fine. Â Ugh," I sighed as I rolled my eyes. Â So I begrudgingly ordered two char-grilled dogs with all the fixins. Â And was very, very pleasantly surprised! Â The dogs were grilled exactly the way I like them - juicy and slightly charred on the split edges, the toppings were plentiful (onions, tomatoes, pickles, green relish, peppers and mustard on a poppy seed bun). Â The fries were "ehhh..." but who cares? Â It's all about the dog, man! Â
I don't remember the entire price of the meal - shame on me (I should; we eat there once or twice a month) - but we pay somewhere in the vicinity of $13 for two grilled dog combo meals. Â I'm deducting a star because once in a while they ~do~ get your order confused. Â They're pretty quick to fix it when a mistake happens, though, so no big deal.
Alright, I admit it. Â I'll hang my head in shame. Â These are pretty much my favourite dogs in the city. Â True story!
Not a great beef.....skimpy on the beef....and no taste to it.....dry bun that was not very good also.....I won't stop here again even though it is convenient when you are running for the train....no wonder all the other joints in the food court had lines and no one was here. Â
