Been to Grey Eagle 6-8 times for music.Have eaten there a couple of times.Went there last night to see Dehlia Low and there was a modest crowd, but a good show.
My concern was the food. No,not the food, the service.Sign said that the food was served during shows, but there was no one at the food counter.I asked the bartender if they were serving food and he casually said he would get the food guy.
Two guys came out of the back room.No smiles. No "I'm glad to see you.Glad you are here"
In fact,I don't remember them saying anything.I asked for a menu and the non skinny one simply pointed at the chalk board.I asked if they had a hamburger and, again,he pointed at the chalk board.
Order a pork kimchi bowl for $7 and it was decent/good.But ...but...boy,the the staff was worthless.
The food was great!! This is by far the best "bar food" I've had! The pulled pork tacos and the tempha wraps were the best. Their grilled cheese and special garlic spread is out of this world. We didn't stay for the concert, but got to listen to the band rehearse 1.5 hours before the show and what we heard was fantastic.
Review Source:We saw Scythian at the Grey Eagle (wish i could yelp about how great THEY are). This venue is awesome! They have a little patio to the side where you can hear the music, or just go during a break. Decent beers on tap, most of them local.
The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is the parking. I had to park down the street a little, and felt unsafe. It's pretty dark.
The Orange Peel garners the headlines, but the Grey Eagle is the real gem of the Asheville music scene. Â They get a terrific lineup of musicians, and unlike other venues in Asheville every show does not feature a jam band noodling away for 15 minutes every song. Â The sound is very good and there's some separation between the music hall area and the bar so the sound of bottles clanking doesn't interrupt your enjoyment of the show too much. Â There's also a little courtyard if you want to smoke or want to get away from the music.
Their beer selection is terrific (from PBR to Pisgah Pale) and the wait/bar-staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Â Make sure to check out the artist photos on the wall by the bathroom--some great stuff there. Â
They also have some decent food if you can't get a bite anywhere else before the show.
I've only been to The Grey Eagle for The Old Farmer's Ball contra dance (Monday nights) and their annual holiday waltz ball. Â The space is large, but does get packed due to the popular contra dance. Â I would prefer an actual dance floor instead of the thick plywood. Â The room does get a bit hot with a lot of dancers. Â With a better dance floor and better airflow, this review would be 3.5 to 4 stars.
Review Source:The Grey Eagle is a bright spot for Asheville. Â If the Orange Peel won't host you, then you have this fine venue. Â From local, to national to international acts, this venue can get stompin'. Â Great sound quality and typically an easy going staff. Â
What are you waiting for, go out a support some musicians.
Its amazing how many good bands make their way up to this backcountry corner of the world, but it happens. Between the Eagle and the Peel, Asheville's pretty much got you covered. I actually enjoy The Grey Eagle the greater of the 2. Ive seen Bret Dennen and Explosions in the Sky here, and both shows were amazing, good sound too. Parking is ample, and so is standing room. They cram over 600 people in there! Counches in the back if your feelin mellow, but up front is where its at. If youre lucky you can get within reaching distance of the band. I did at explosions. Right in front of the speakers too. It was mind-numbingly good. Youll enjoy the Eagle for sure.
Review Source:The Grey Eagle tavern is my favorite spot around downtown Asheville to watch live music.
The place is spacious inside and out. Also, there is decent parking in the lot or on the street, as the Grey Eagle is not surrounded by other buildings. You don't have to worry about parking meters or pay-structures as you do in other parts of the city.
The stage is nice and there is a lot of open audience room. They have a 610 standing room capacity! You can stand, you can sit, you can lean against a wall. Unlike other places, you aren't running into people entering the establishment while you try to enjoy live music, nor do you have to contend with customers who aren't interested in the show. There is an entire room of tables and the bar that is away from the stage.
The Grey Eagle also has a great calendar. It seems there is also some diverse musical act or dancing event taking place. Indeed, 'Contra' dancing takes place on a weekly basis.
Another plus, the tavern is non-smoking! You can smoke on the semi-spacious outdoor patio if you must, but a nonsmoker like me doesn't have to worry about absolutely reeking just to enjoy a local band.
Food and drink selection is good! No complaints!
