I like Hendocs because its usually dead. That's my kind of bar! I also appreciate the pool table and the booths. I love a good booth.
Taking off a point for the bathrooms. They smell, and you can see right into the boy's bathroom because the door is always open. Who designed it that way?
After living literally a five-minute walk from Hendoc's for three years, I finally decided to stop in. I was pleasantly surprised by their dark and uncrowded nature as well as the premium VIP bike parking available just steps from the door. When I arrived at 9:08pm on a Thursday, I was informed by the bartender that I had just missed the happy hour, so sadly, I would have to pay $3 for my vodka & soda. Um, what?! I may have been in something like sticker shock since I had just returned from NYC - I'm pretty sure that the upperclass New York drinks with their finance jobs, penthouse condos, and private kindergartens would probably look down their straws at their humble midwestern counterparts. Still, it's hard to say no to $3 drinks... and I hear happy hour = $1.50. NICE. The bartender was friendly, the drinks were strong, there was a weird guy that kept trying to make conversation with everyone all night, and there were no offensive odors to be found (except maybe coming from that weird guy). I think they have a pool table, too. I'll be back to find out - there's nothing that makes my night quite like finding a place to reveal my utter incompetence at geometry and hand-eye coordination.
Review Source:Since they renovated the place, I like the environment a lot more. The bartenders are great and they have amazing specials, expecially the every day special of $1 PBRs. They have a good import selection for a campus bar. It is a good place to enjoy a couple drinks with friends or watch a game.
Review Source:This is totally one of those bars that I should visit more often. I love it here, but when I'm deciding where to go on a night out I don't usually think of this place first. Part of that is because I live near the Short North so I tend to hang around those bars now, but when I lived north of campus this was a favorite of mine. I actually also ended up here for my last birthday. I don't remember how that happened, but one of the OSU football games was on and we had a great time.
Hendoc's is on High St. near Maynard, right by Shisha. It's walkable if you live north of campus, but if not, you'll have to find parking on the street. I've been able to park right in front, but usually it's on one of the side streets. For some reason Hendoc's is never that crowded. It's like people just don't know about it or something. Which is nice. It's a great place to get away from all the smothering mobs of students at most of the other campus bars on the weekends. During the week it can be really slow. If you're not looking for a packed house, this would be a good place to go.
Hendoc's is friendly. The bartenders are nice, attentive and helpful in terms of letting you know what specials are currently going on. I used to forget the specials all the time. It's a lot to keep track of. Every day of the week has different specials. I like Wednesday's $1 wells and $1 domestic bottles and Monday's $2.50 imports. They even have $2 wells on Saturdays, which really can't be beat because these specials last all day and night. Everyday specials include $1 PBR drafts, $2 bombs and $3 seasonals. The prices are usually really good here if you pay attention to the specials. Otherwise the prices are pretty typical of everywhere else. They do have a pretty impressive selection of beers, though.
One of my friends from the area moved away to go to college in Arizona. Every time he's back in town he comes here because he loves it so much. It's a great place to go with a group since there's usually space for everyone to find a seat since it's not always packed. There are tables and booths and most of them are around the bar. In the other section of the building is another room where you'll find a bunch of games. There's pool tables, darts, a basketball game and some video games. Hendoc's also has a great digital jukebox. There are also TVs all over so it is a good place to catch the game. When I came here for my birthday we were watching the game but everyone was buying me so many drinks that I didn't know the score until the next day. This is definitely a place to have some fun. Most people come here and stay most of the evening and end up pretty drunk. But I've always found the people here really friendly. Definitely unlike the campus crowd. In fact, I think that a lot of the people that frequent this bar aren't students at all. Sometimes the crowd seems a little older and mature.
I've always found the restrooms to be pretty clean and decent, even though they aren't sparkling. Hendoc's certainly isn't that big and there's nothing flashy about it. It's an older bar but it doesn't look run down. It's a great neighborhood casual bar with great character. The only drawback is no patio, so it's maybe not the best choice for a perfect summer night. If you are looking forward to a night of bar hopping, your other selections include Sloopy's and Ledo's (avoid) and Blue Danube (good!) nearby. But I personally like Hendoc's the best out of this area. If you don't mind a little walk, Ravari is up the street a little ways.
This bar is worth checking out if you haven't. A lot of the people here are regulars, but they are welcoming to newcomers. The prices are hard to resist and they make their drinks stiff here most of the time. Hendoc's doesn't get the credit it deserves. Even from me. I need to come here a lot more.
The way this bar gets overlooked by the general bar-going population of Columbus is absolutely criminal. There's not a single thing I can fault this North Campus bar for even if I tried. Some people may think that it's too far north to consider on a night out, but these are most likely the same people that have found themselves walking twice as far to go to Miani's in search of pricier drinks and lousy bar service. I'll never get it.
The main draw of Hendoc's is the cheap drinks. Their $2 import night on Monday makes for a great alternative to mug night at Out 'R Inn if the crowd there gets too overwhelming. They have an impressive and ever-changing selection of microbrews and imports that will leave you good and drunk before you can even attempt to try half of them. When one of them isn't selling to well, they sell them at their $2 "yard sale" price until it's gone in order to free up room for a new beer. The $1.50 mug special on Tuesday is a great deal as well, with the house mugs being at least twice the size of those at Out 'R Inn. If you're there any other night, no need to worry about breaking the bank- Hendoc's also offers $1 PBR drafts and $2 bomb shots every night of the week. If you're broke and sober, Hendoc's should be at the top of your list.
Cheap drinks can only get a bar so far- the social vibe at a campus bar is what really puts a bar over the top. With a gang of regulars that may not have been to another bar since they turned 21, Hendoc's is always a friendly and inviting place to be. It's definitely the only bar around campus where I don't feel like a creeper talking to complete strangers around me about stuff like sports and music, and what's better is that the bartenders are as much a part of the scene as the people that drink there. Most of them hang out there on their off nights; one of them even has his own beer bong behind the bar that he'll let you use if he recognizes your face. That's camaraderie, my friends.
The one thing Hendoc's sorely lacks is an outdoor patio area, but for nonsmokers it's not a huge issues. The bar itself is only two average sized rooms connected in the middle, one with a pool table and a pop-a-shot game in the back. It may be hard to entertain yourself at first if you're not with a good group, but the cheap drinks and goofy locals will take care of that in due time. It may not seem like much at first glance, but after a few visits and a few more blackouts in one of the booths by the windows, you'll soon be asking yourself why you ever went anywhere else.
I met some friends at Hendocs late on a week night. Â I'm not sure what the usual scene is like, Â but the good beer is cheap...Newcastle is only $2.50. Â It's a decent place. Â Nothing fantastic, but they have pool tables and you can feel free to get as drunk as you want and have plenty of space to jump around and act stupid. Â Oh, and they have that creepy deer hunter video game where you slaughter unsuspecting peaceful forest creatures. Â And if that doesn't satisfy your bloodlust, there's a foosball-style hockey game next to it.
