Like most secondary major cities, our musical institutions usually go highly unattended. CSO is no exception, making a brush with closing last season. However, the musical prowess of the CSO should be respected by all, as it gives Columbus an astute cultural edge over other cities.
I attended the opening last night mostly due to my love of "the planets", which was narrated by John Glenn with a (semi-cheesy) video display using clips from NASA and elsewhere during the pieces. They also played some Bernstein in the first half, which screams NYC when you hear it. Wonderful renditions of everything overall.
Last night's location was in Vets Memorial, although CSO calls the Ohio Theatre home. Tickets were no more than $28 for lower circle, well worth the cost. I was able to obtain student tickets, a great value at $10 each.
My only gripe is that there were quite a few people who were arriving late (maybe since it was a large crowd, but how rude that you caused the show to be delayed since there were so many of you), and there were definitely some people that should have stayed home sick (your coughing adds to the symphony,,, really people...)
I will continue to attend performances where I can, to support this gem of Columbus. (and even more as long as I can get student tickets).
