Great sandwich and ping pong table. Â The only bad things were the highly touted tater tots!!! I know, I know, it's sacrilegious, but they were very salty, like someone went to salt them just a little bit but some other devious person untwisted the cap as a prank and the salt spilled all over my tots! Don't worry, I'll give them another try.
Review Source:We came here on the suggestion of a friend who saw the place featured on "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives." Â We never saw that episode, but they wanted to try it, so we went, too.
We planned to meet at 4:00 in the afternoon on a Sunday, and, when we got there, they were already there. Â We noticed the place has a number of good "Happy Hour" specials, including $2.50 domestics from 4 to 7. Â I liked that. Â Two of our friends were already waiting for us when we arrived right on time, and were waiting in a booth, but had not been served. Â We waited around another fifteen or twenty minutes while waitress after waitress just walked on by as if we were invisible, or had somehow fallen into a warp in the space/time continuum. Â It was a little unnerving. Â We also noticed that the place was a bit small - maybe five tables and six booths? Â There is, of course, the bar since it is a bar, and a secondary counter for seating between the bar and the tables, but it was just a bit compact and "crowded." Â Sitting in the booth, the table was right up against my stomach. Â I wouldn't get anything in my lap, but it was uncomfortable, and I'm sure people bigger than I would not even be able to use the booths. Â As for the tables, most of the seating in the place is for four or fewer, but they can push tables together for larger parties. Â They're in real trouble if they happen to get larger parties than that, or more than one large party shows at the same time. Â Anyway, I digress.
There's not much for vegetarians to eat, but they do offer a few options, and only salads if you want to go low fat, or grease-free. Â One of the greasy options was the "Tavern Tots." Â People rave about these, (probably what Guy Fieri came for on DDD), and they are correct. Â The Tavern Tots are absolutely, without question, incredible. Â The best tots I've ever had anywhere. Â They are crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and seasoned to perfection. Â They are served with both ranch and blue cheese dressing, and the blue cheese dressing is great. Â
We also had the grilled cheese sandwich, which was excellent, too, but not much of a bargain at $8.00 - fair, but not great. Â I got mine with the french fries because I hadn't tried the tots before. Â The fries had a good flavor, and the weren't greasy, but they reminded me more of Kobey's shoestring potatoes than french fries. Â In other words, they're "skinny," very skinny. Â I would like to mention that the food was prepared perfectly, and way above standards for a pub. Â
For the most part, this is a pretty average pub. Â The walls echo sounds so that even with a few people, it sounds very loud, and it is difficult to have a conversation. Â The waitstaff were nice enough, but I'm still wondering about that glitch at the beginning, what's up with that? Â And, even though the place is in an up and coming neighborhood, it is still in an area of town I would not want to be in after dark. Â When you are sitting there, look across the street at the houses with barred windows, six foot fences, and, just down the street, the sign warning passersby that the property is protected by guard dogs. Â The neighborhood still has a way to go to escape its recent image. Â I only graded this place up from average to very good based on the food. Â It's not really inexpensive, but it is really, really good - especially the tots. Â If you go there, you have to try the tots.
If all I was judging this place on was food, I'd give it a much higher rating. Â The food was pretty good. Â We had the Dr. Pepper ribs to start, I had the El Guapo Burger and the hubby had the Rueben. Â All delicious. Â I appreciate the fact that they smoked their own corned beef. Â They seemed to have a good selection of beers as well.
BUT... and here is the BUT. Â It was loud in there. Â Not just I need you to talk a little louder so I can hear you loud but, if we aren't shouting at each other we can't talk loud. Â It was ridiculous. Â I am usually pretty tolerant of noise and maybe it was just the crowd that was there when we were there (lots of drinking, not lots of eating going on) but it turned me off so much that I probably won't be returning. Â Unless I can get the food to go. Â Now there's an idea....
We decided to check out this place since we saw it on food network. The ambiance was good for hanging out with friends. They happy hour specials were great. There were several tvs with sports on, but the pool table was oddly situated. Â Their tots were the highlighted item, but they weren't all that. Nice and crispy, but needed flavor. Not sure I'd visit again.
Review Source:Made a trip there after going to mile high stadium while on vacation. We had seen the triple d episode and the tots and bombshell were what I have been dreaming about since then. Bombshell was incredible, tots were top notch. My son and I split the bombshell and a Reuben, both excellent. Wife had the not a Philly, and the beef/ steak in it was melt in your mouth good. If ever in Denver again, I will go again.
Review Source:Stopped here twice during our vacation road trip from MN to CA! We switched around some plans for the trip back to MN so that we could eat here a second time!
On the first stop we got the tots, pork rinds, and the Bombshell (sandwich with their house made pastrami, slaw, swiss, and fried egg). The second time we got the onion rings, pork rinds, and the Boomer (burger with brie, sauteed mushrooms, grilled onions, and truffle oil). Seeing a trend here? DO NOT miss out on the pork rinds! I've never really even been a huge fan of pork rinds, but these are well worth the try, and they're made start to finish in house.
It was busy both times we were here, but that didn't impact the service or speed of food delivery one bit. We never had an empty beer, and rightfully so with the options they have on tap. Tried the local Prost Brewery seasonal, Modus Hopperandi, and several others between two visits.
The late night crowds can be a little intense but if you like a fun, lively crowd and don't mind socializing with a few hammered people then it's totally fun. We got to know a regular while there our first night, and he proved to be one of the most interesting and fun people we met during a whole 5,000 mile drive.
The pricing is very reasonable for the quality of food you're getting, and if you're going with 2 or more people I strongly suggest getting small sizes of several of the apps/snacks so you can share and try many things. We were blown away by the size of the small onion ring and small tots orders. We went with a couple of apps and then split one sandwich between the two of us so we could maximize our menu enjoyment without needing to be carried out to the car in a wheelbarrow.
The Bombshell is a must try! The house made pastrami is fantastic and the fried egg on there cooked to perfection. The quality and flavor of the bread they use is amazing, and the flavors on the sandwich itself are perfectly balanced. You never get an overwhelming taste of slaw, mustard, or egg overpowering the pastrami. We got the slaw as our side with this since we enjoyed a couple of tasty fried treats as a starter. As a side note - a day and a half later this sandwich is still tasty as leftovers thanks to having a cooler and hotel stops with a mini fridge.
The Boomer was awesome if you love mushrooms, onions, and good brie! I was happy to find that they would prepare the burger medium-rare, and the burger patty itself was huge. We opted for the sweet potato fries with the burger and we were not disappointed. Â
If you're in the area or can afford an hour detour, you should definitely take the time and enjoy their food. It's in a more residential area and just down the road from the Prost Brewery they feature beer from. I'd be a horrible person if I didn't mention that the Prost Brewery does buy one get one free growlers on Mondays (at least when I called last week). Take a nice airtight container with you and you can get some of those tasty pork rinds to go. If you have access to raw pork skin in your area then it's not a big deal, but that's tough to find in MN and none of the packaged ones around here are as good as home made or what you can get at the Highland Tavern!
We saw the Diners, Drive ins and Drives episode and read a lot of reviews of the Tavern and decided to check it out yesterday. Â Service was great, the food a bit of a let down. The tots taste good but are a little mushy, the onion rings are great, the wings are good but a little boring, the pastrami was tasty but too dry. My benchmark for pastrami is Katz's Deli in New York and this falls well short of that mark. I was pleased with the beer selection. The bar itself is nice enough but the gaggle of screaming woo girls was quite annoying.
Review Source:Jacob and I visited Colorado recently and used the Yelp app as our tour guide.
This bar had tons of positive reviews so we figured it's a must-visit.
We went during the afternoon, which proved to be a smart choice. We parked on the slanted street and walked right in. A friendly hostess greeted us and asked us where we'd like to sit... table or booth? We opted for a booth and then we checked out the menu.
Our server greeted us quickly and was really accommodating to us out-of-towners/first-timers. She suggested a few drafts Jacob might like based on his preference and even gave us a few popular menu items we may enjoy. Luckily, we got there just in time for the end of Happy Hour, which meant a buck off Jake's local draft.
Their menu is pretty limited, with a few hippie burgers and a handful of sandwiches. I went for the bbq bacon cheeseburger while Jacob went for the El Guapo (green chile, cheddar, pickled onion, mayonesa). We both opted for the Tavern Tots for $1.50 extra apiece, which were described to us as deep fried mashed potato balls... mmmm potato balls. The burgers were pricey... $11 for his and $11.50 for mine, not including the Tot upcharge.
In addition, Jacob was curious about the pork neck green chile stew (Nuevo Mexico style, spicy, with cheese & tortilla). It came out pretty quickly after ordering. It didn't come with tortilla strips like you'd imagine, it came out with a rolled up flour tortilla. He still enjoyed the soup and said it had a great flavor.
The food came out as Jacob finished his soup. Both our burgers were cooked correctly and they were presented nicely. I really enjoyed my burger and I fell in love with the Tavern Tots. Jacob didn't enjoy his burger much. By the description, he figured it'd be spicy, but instead he said it was kind of lame, not spicy and the flavors didn't complement each other very well. Wah wah.
Overall, a cool little joint with friendly staff and a good beer selection. The food is overpriced but tasty. I'd recommend going before the dinner rush like we did, it made for a very stress-free visit.
The food at this neighborhood tavern is upscale (gourmet) pub-food. Â Having been featured on Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives" the restaurant is quite busy on a Sunday afternoon, BUT you WILL NOT be disappointed... Â the tater-tots are sublime! Â The pastrami sandwich is certainly the best in Denver, and perhaps the best you'll have, ever, period.
Review Source:Made a visit to this place last night...at first was set back by the lack of a host/hostess to help with seating, list etc. After that all was good, the owner/manager Brian was on it...let us know how long and kept letting us know we were next up for a table, was told about 20 min to get a table, but was only about 10 if that....
Everyone was running around and really taking care of the guests and working together helping each other. Great to see people in the "Service" industry actually doing what they should. Our Waitress was bringing refills on drinks..without having to ask and checked on us numerous times. Even in a crowded place to feel like they wanted us there was so refreshing!!
We came from up in Westminster and will be back for sure...
Thank you  keep up the great service and quality food...
Cheers
Great place. Great owners. Great staff. Great atmosphere. Great food. Can't really go wrong here.
It's always comfy to belly up to the bar and have conversation with the bartender and everyone else sitting there with you. They just make you feel at home.
Really dig the artwork too - they seem to have a rotating display of local artists.
If you're anywhere near the area, I highly recommend stopping in!
Stopped by on a busy Friday night and it was busy. Â Had trouble trying to figure out the seating (first come first serve? put a name in? Â stand by a table until the people are so creeped out at you staring at them they leave?) that we almost went elsewhere. Â Luckily, the very friendly, very nice owner came to our rescue. Â
We ended up sitting at the bar. Â I was very impressed when the owner came back to offer us a table when one was available, even though we were comfortable.
The taps available are typical Colorado local stuff, nothing too interesting, but decent choices. Â The bartenders are great at listening to what you want and following through.
The food. Â The food is great, dare I say close to amazing. Â Housemade, delicious, good portions, just good. Â Tater tots. Â Do it. Â Don't regret not getting the tots.
The buzz was all about how Guy Fieri and "Diners Drive-Ins and Dives" had been filming there the days before, so I suggest you get your butt in here before the place explodes even more!
This place is awesome! Besides being right by my house, they have great bar games like table tennis (a.k.a. ping-pong), fooseball, and pool. The bartenders are always very friendly and happy to see you, especially Brian, the owner, who makes you feel at home every time you go in. Based on the bar atmosphere, you'd be surprised how good their food is, but TRUST ME, try one of their burgers, tater tots (not those gross things from the cafeteria in 5th grade, but real, home-made tots), chicken wings, onion rings, or my favorite -- bacon meatloaf! You won't be disappointed.
Review Source:I was here after a Bug Theater show and so was everyone else! It was crowded before the event as well, popular place. Drinks were of a good price and strength. We had already done dinner so no opinion on food here, yet. I would go back for drinks after another Grawlix show, but only to hang out with the folks from the show. I will definitely return to try the food, many good things have been said about it.
Review Source:Probably one of my favorite places to visit of all time! Tavern Tots and the Salads are amazing!!! Best service always and absolutely a great atmosphere for everyone to kick back and relax! I was there almost every Sunday Funday when I lived in Denver and now that I am back in Texas have made it a point to go back every time I visit! I introduced most of my Texas friends to this wonderful place and they have made it part of their trips back to Denver as well!! Great food, good service, and a PING PONG table!! Come on.... Just go!!
Review Source:The food is overall good and the service is great for this corner neighborhood bar.
I ordered red chili and onion rings. The chili was disappointing. The flavor and spice was okay, but the meat and bean chili had only a few beans and most of the pulled meat was fatty. I ate most of it, but when asked how the experience was, I just informed them I was not happy with the chili.
They comped the chili and ordered me a free dessert! The beer prices were good and the atmosphere was fun, a bit busy, but the service kept up.
I love this place. They have great food (fries, ribs, vegetarian sandwich specials). The servers are super nice.
However, when it's very crowded, the service becomes very slow as the servers are literally running from table to table. They could probably use an extra hand. Also, they have an old garage door type window that opens up the restaurant to the street. The problem is that you can smell the cigarette smoke from the people standing outside.
Regardless, this is a favorite place of mine. Very chill and relaxed.
This is my new favorite neighborhood watering hole. Â Some of my favorite features:
-The vibe is always good,
-the bar patrons are friendly with a health mix of regulars and new visitors
- it has a much more down to earth feel than say Root Down and Linger which can be too "yuppie" at times
-they have great happy hour specials. Â
Overall, I really cannot say too much more than has not been said elsewhere but the tavern tots are delicious and overall the food is very good (though it still is bar food) though I admit I am usually more there for drinks.
Also, big shout out to the servers who are both attentive and quite attractive. Â Big plus. :) Â
Definitely worth checking out.
Contrary to what the business's name and my well established frequenting of drinking establishments might lead you to think, I've never visited this locale at night. Â Instead, this review touts Highland Tavern as Basically the Best Brunch Place Ever. Â It's pretty divey so you don't have to dress up (but not so much so that you can't take your mom or kidlet you picked up from the babysitter last night), it's pretty cheap so you don't have to be rich, and it's pretty delicious so you don't have to eat garbage and pretend to be grateful. Â
As others have mentioned (and will do again), the tots are delish. My personal favorite, however, is the breakfast sammy. Although the dish contains only the most basic breakfast building blocks of english muffin, cheese, egg, and meat (baaaaaacon), it somehow is kind of the most amazing thing I've ever consumed . I don't know if they secretly include crack or just magic and love, but it is seriously amazing. Don't make my boyfriend's mistake of ordering it deconstructed - have it the way God and the dudes in the kitchen intended.
Also, $10 for bottomless mimosas is distinctly awesome, but the fact that each (totally reasonably sized) mimosa is only $3 to begin with may be even more so. Service is prompt and friendly-with-personality, and a curiously bizarre array of velvet paintings adds a touch of je ne sais quoi to the bar area (if not my house, thanks to my boyfriend's flat out refusal to include them in our decorative scheme). Highland Tavern, I heart you.
Mash Potato Balls! Â Better known as Tavern Tots! Â This is a must have. Â I end up getting fat on these bad boys every time I'm here. Â Then I wash them down with a PBR or a Schlitz! Â
Place is a great neighborhood bar with a cool cozy vibe. Â Everything I had on the menu has been good which include the Cubano and a Brisket Sandwich! Â
Oh and pretty cool (I believe local) art work that is for sale! Â A little hidden gem in the highlands!
I really, really wanted to give this place more stars based on the place itself, but when I look at everything together, well, I can't.
The up and coming area of the Highlands, I was still sure to lock my doors though. Obviously the area can throw away a lot of potential business, but these can also be the best so you still have to venture off sometimes.
This bar is a good time, with a ping pong table, couple video games and a pool table really what more do you need to have a good time, maybe a little more room would be nice.
They have a good selection of brews here which is my favorite part by far, my favorite part. The bartender explained all the food to be amazing especially the mac & cheese and I am a huge fan of mac & cheese so I had to have it, this is why the place gets two stars. The noodles are typical elbows that you would find in any other plate and it was all really dry, the bacon I added though was amazing, but you can never go wrong with bacon. The tots that everyone likes to rave about, even when there the guy next to me was like, " you must get the tots", well I regret getting the tots which game out piping hot and quickly turned ice cold, were very mushy with little crisp. That is my culinary review for the day.
Highland Tavern has everything you want in a neighborhood bar:
- Great bar food for the nights you don't feel like cooking.
- A decent selection of craft beers on tap as well as a good selection of yard beers making it easy to match your mood and your budget.
- Whisky shots that come in a real glass. In an adult serving size.
- Friendly bartenders that make an effort to get to know the local folks who support them.
I mostly go at off times. During the week for happy hour or for a leisurely, don't-want-the-weekend-to-end, Sunday meal. It gets kinda slammed during prime time. But that's their fault for being so great.
I have to start this review by saying that I have not eaten here so that could possibly increase or decrease my two stars but until then, unfortunately I gotta do two. I came in for a drink with a friend and we were not greeted by anyone. This is ok because I realize that it may be difficult to have someone by the front door all the time but it quickly started crashing down on us.
We sat at the bar and the bartender was very "blah". It wasn't busy at all and he was doing some stocking or something and did not acknowledge we were there for a good 3 minutes. When he finally asked what we wanted for drinks, he came off snarky (and possibly hungover)... I got my usual drink but there was barely any alcohol in it. I didn't say anything because the bartender was immediately back in his own world and was a little intimidated.
My friend and I paid for the fair-priced drinks (if there was any alcohol in them) and I proceeded to use the restroom before I left, where the chaos continued. The bathroom was not clean and there was water all over the floor. Who knows how that got there? I don't.
In conclusion, I will give it another shot and try to food and update my review. I understand that people have bad days and reading other reviews, I don't really see too many negative comments on service.
Never judge a bar by it's shady corner.
Came here cause highland tap and burger was packed. Â Walked in and saw a dive bar scene...but was surprised to see a pretty legit menu placed in front of us. Â A little paper menu to indicate the specials of the day was given as well. Â Sandwiches, soups, appetizers, burgers, desserts, etc. Â Everything sounded so good.
We started off with the tater tots...um...they were like fried mashed potatoes. Â The potatoes inside were gooey and buttery. Â Delicious. We ended up ordering TWO large orders. Â My friend ordered the veggie sandwich which was fried butternut squash with a layer of flavored goat cheese spread. Â Not a bite was wasted. Â
The pork rinds were just fried salt...meaning we ate all of that too. Â Our waitress was attentive, the noise level wasn't too loud so we were able to have a group conversation, and there were tvs all around the bar for the guys who wanted to watch basketball.
What a great place to stumble upon...and go back to!
Ping Pong! Â I love ping pong! Â
And Foosball. Â And I love love love the fact that the games are free, no quarter slots asking 75 cents for a game of Foosball. Which was awesome because my lady and I were able to start a game of Foosball and leave it guilt free 5 minutes later when the ping pong table opened up.
The other patrons were friendly, and the "winner stays on the table" rule for ping pong guarantees that you're gonna make some new friends.
The only negatives are the limited beer list (oh no! Â I think I've become a beer snob!), and the ever so slow service. Â As in, our server never came back to see if we wanted another drink and also disappeared for 30 minutes as we were trying to get our check slow. Â Disappeared from the whole place. Â I had to get a bartender to go find her so we could pay.
But the overall atmosphere was great. It was a very pleasant evening.
A few girlfriends and I were actually trying to go to Root Down for Sunday brunch but were quoted an half and a half wait. Our stomachs could not wait for that, so we moseyed down the street to find Highland Tavern. I wasn't expecting much at all, to be honest, considering it's a bar. We walked in and there were only two other tables seated, also making me nervous. . .
A cheery server quickly greeted us and presented us with the brunch menus. They didn't have a lot of options but the Bourbon French Toast quickly jumped out at me, so I put in my order.
We waited for our meal with $3 bloody marys (also had a bottomless mimosa option for $10).
Our food was delivered and I was shocked, probably some of the best French Toast I have ever had. I asked for my bacon extra crispy and they actually followed through on that as well! One of my GFs had ordered the tater tots, and these are not your standard frozen tots. These are homemade, crunchy on the outside, creamy on the inside, amazing tots...even the homemade ranch sauce they serve them with was delish.
I've heard this place makes great dinner food as well and turns into a relaxed vibe at night. They also get bonus points for having a ping pong table!!
Although I lived 2 blocks from this place for 2 years, I only managed to stop by 2 times. Yes, a theme of 2s here. Â =)
Anyways, this place has character and I enjoyed my games of pool here while drinking a tasty beverage. This venue has a fun vibe and usually not too crowded. Worth stopping by if you need a cold one...or three.
A good time will always be had at Highland Tavern. I prefer it on a mellow weeknight or early on Fridays, but it's also fun to come on a more rowdy evening. My favorite things about this watering hole:
1. Laid back and genuinely friendly bartenders and waitstaff. Â I have never had bad service here!
2. Tasty tots
3. Bacon meatloaf lil fatties (sliders on crack)
4. Their Cleveland Po Boy sandwich, which was a special months ago, but I still remember it fondly as the best sandwich I've ever had in Denver.
I also noticed on their menu that they have $10 bottomless mimosa brunch. That means I need to get drunk here at 11 a.m.
Not having been there at night, I can safely say that Highland Tavern is a pretty chill place to spend a Sunday Brunch. $3 Bloody Marys with cucumber-jalapeno-infused vodka? Yes, please!
The food there is really, really good. Big ups for serving Grateful Bread. That stuff is delicious... some of the best out there! And, coming from a girl who never met a carb she didn't like, that's saying something. My only complaint is-- if you're going to charge me $1.50 extra to substitute tots instead of fries with my sandwich-- I want more than six of them on my plate. Those things are Too. Freakin. Good. Don't be stingy! Share the wealth!
The bartenders there are super-nice and accommodating. The garage-door patio is perfect for a breezy almost-fall afternoon. Like I said, I can't speak to the night crowd at Highlands, but I'll definitely cruise back for some happy daytime hangs!
Pleasantly surprised! Â Went for a pub dinner last night, and I was blown away at the range in this small menu. Â I was wowed by the black bean/chicken soup (which was really too thick to be called a soup), the veggies that were offered, and the beer selection. Â My boyfriend raved about the bread on his turkey sandwich (baked by Grateful Bread Co) - how often does that happen? Â The music was rockin', but not too loud that we couldn't hear each other. Â Service was friendly and attentive. Â My minor complaints: Â the lemon creme fraiche completely clashed with the flavor of the marinated beets (which by themselves were fantastic), and the baby bok choy was overcooked and served with too much sauce. Â But seriously, I got beets and baby bok choy in a bar!? Â Will go back here again, and I plan to hit the unhealthy side of the menu (burgers, porkstravaganza!).
Also, I felt a little guilty about not wandering into the Arabian Bar across the street after dinner for some real slumming. Â The economic and cultural divide between these two establishments is palpable.
5 Stars for 5 Awesome Things.
1. El Guapo burger. To eat it is to love it.
2. Great service. Â We've had the same chill waitress every time, and we wouldn't want it any other way.
3. Local food. Bread from the Grateful Bread Company, Sausage from Clyde's and house pickled veggies .
4. Ping Pong!
5. Porkstravaganza, Pierogi and a late night menu which serves PBR waffles and fried chicken (okay that's three things, but I can't give Highland Tavern 8 stars, now can I?).
We've swung by here a few times for their happy hour. They have a decent selection of beers on tap and the sliders are amazing.
They also have these cheesy tots thingys that are quite delicious. They hand make them, so they're not out of a frozen bag.
I'm going to have to try the perogies. I've never seen them on a menu out this way.
Updated because they now serve delicious amazing bar food. I recommend their burgers. You can really customize the burgers how you want, and I chose to get a cheeseburger with EGG. Â Why not make my already unhealthy burger even MORE unhealthy by added fried egg? Don't mind if I do!!!
Bf got the tots, and since they had just started serving food here, they were still figuring out the deep fryer settings and ended up giving him a free batch since the first came out a little well-done. Â He also got the philly cheesesteak sandwich-it was just okay, a bit greasy.
The bartenders are so friendly and down to earth. You'll usually see the owner tending bar nearly every night. This is definitely tops on my list of highland bars. Check it out if you're in the area.
It's like a dive bar dressed up as a yuppie hang-out. Just like the neighborhood it resides in. The LoHi neighborhood is a mix of nice, fancy houses right next to some real ghetto shacks. Who doesn't love this 'hood and envy those who live here?
So what about the bar? A good place to get a Czechvar in a real fancy glass or a Hamms (fucking Hamms?) in a can. They have ping-pong (what other bar has ping-pong?). The atmosphere is very hip. Cool, relaxing colors and great booths
I've seen some reviewers mention the lack of food. Well no longer do you have to order delivery when at the Highlands Tavern because they are now serving food. And what tasty food it is. Little Fatties (basically, sliders) are pretty unique. They've got some awesome looking Sammies as well as very unique snacks (house made Tots, Perogies, and Mixed Nuts). Plus a late-night menu that includes waffles.
The boyfriend is a bit of a ping pong fan (I believe he thinks he's a little more skilled at it than he actually is, but I'd never tell him that to his face) so when we heard there was a bar 2 blocks away from where we just moved that had a ping pong table we had to check it out!
Now let me say we've only been here on weeknights so its always been quiet and calm (the way I like bars to be). We've made some friends and met a lot of our neighbors through this bar, so I really can't complain. The decor is so unoriginal and probably purchased at a store called "Generic Bar Crap" but whatever, I don't go to bars to get ideas on how to redecorate my house or anything. They've got the typical entertainment devices; jukebox, pool table, Buck Hunter (I ALWAYS accidentally shoot the freakin' doe!) but the ping pong is definitely a unique addition!
Will I ever go on a weekend night? Probably not, to me the Highland Tavern is more of a "relax after work" kinda bar and being only two blocks away from us makes it so convenient.
minus one star for no food...I'm not asking for five-star cuisine or anything but dammit greasy food and beer must be consumed together!
Lame.
Way lame. I really don't expect all that much from a bar, but I do expect to get a drink fairly quickly, and the place to not be full of total douche-bags. It was a Friday night, and maybe that accounts for the heightened ratio of idiots, but really? Wall to wall yuppies who play Pearl Jam song after Pearl Jam song on the jukebox, bogart the bartender's attention for unnecessary amounts of time, and hit on anything that moves simply because it's 1:30 and they're about to go home alone. Lame. Half of the bartenders were awesome (which is why they get two stars and not one), and the other half were more concerned with chatting up the drunk assholes than actually serving drinks. And possibly the most heinous crime of all is their jukebox. Worst one I've ever seen, and unfortunately had to suffer through the wretchedness.
No thank you Highland Tavern, I'll pass.
I wanted to rustle up a posse for a drinky drink throw-down.
Boy was choosing Highland Tavern a mistake.
The location leaves a lot to desired.
If you take Kirby's advice and head next door to the Arabian, you may be stabbed. I have many rules about bars, but number one is "Don't go into bars without windows".
But I digress.
The clientele leaves a lot to be desired at this bar. It's full of knuckleheads and smokers.
The "patio" has no tables, instead it has iron drink slabs welded onto a steel tubed fence which makes you feel like you're a dog that's been let out into the sun.
The place has no food which means that unless you live close enough to walk home that you are stuck with getting hammered without food to cut your drunkenness.
I asked about food and was given a stack of menus of places that delivered. Â Even had I chosen to partake in the awful delivery that the Highlands offers (Wanted: Good NY Style pizza, good chinese food. Apply within), I would have had to hold it in the air since the drink slabs were no more than 6 inches deep.
Other than the lovely females that I rounded up for my drinking posse, there was one female at the bar the entire 2.5 hours we were there, and she was with her boyfriend. This means that any guys hoping to meet their future ex-wives should probably stay away from this place.
Their beer selection is OK but uninspired. They serve PBR which loses them 4 stars. This isn't a dive bar, obviously a lot of money was spent to open it up (Just based on location, one of the cushions of the bar stools fell off while we were moving it outside), so you don't get any dive-bar cred for serving PBR. It's not good beer, stop serving it. There are far cooler beers to serve.
All in all, even if you live close to this place, you are better off taking a cab to the million other bars that are way cooler than this place, that actually serve food, and that have a good vibe.
