GO! you won't be sorry. Being in town for one night, faced with the gauntlet of horrible choices out on I-41, I asked Siri "where should we go to dinner?" and this popped up. As others have said the owners are kind, welcoming, and very helpful when ordering. They are really proud of their food, gave us a free appetizer to try. I had the behl, and it was delicious, I wish I could eat a bowl of that everyday. The mango lassi is perfection, light, cool, sweet but not overly sweet, made with homemade yogurt. Don't dress up, or expect much, you're eating in the back of a grocery store, but the food is so good, and the prices are so cheap, you should leave a BIG TIP, and go there often!
Review Source:we had a chance to revisit "house of india" this weekend when we were back in town and only reconfirmed our initial opinions -
what a warm, sweet bunch of people ! and my-my, do they know their stuff when it comes to making fabulously authentic food !
we ordered the same palette of dishes - if i recall correctly - aloo matar, palak paneer, channa dhal batura and veggie samosas with raita. Â all were wonderful. Â
we even ordered a second round to take with, and it all totaled up to about what the first round would've cost in any other restaurant ...
this place is just the best. Â and by the way - don't miss out on the grocery either !
I've been going to House of India regularly for the past eight years since they've been open. Nearly everything is made from scratch while you wait, and all their dishes are more unique than the local Indian restaurants. The best thing is nearly all of their food orders are vegan, except for a few that come with yogurt sauce. It is a great local family owned business. They are also very good friends of mine.
Review Source:Hole in the wall.
Like get your own water and utensils kind of service.
BUT THE FOOOD! As a vegan, they were so accomodating despite the language barrier.
We tried the bhel (puffed rice goodness) and the samosas (satisfactory but not stellar)
I then had the thali which had a very delicious variety.
Compared to other Indian places in the region, I will go here regularly but hit up Taste Of India with guests or Tandoor for variety.
This place is legit. Half grocery/half restaurant. Exciting that a legitimate small restaurant makes such good Indian food, especially in NWI.
The restaurant is a very small section of the store with about 10 seats. A dive-ish feel with super cheap prices. The Indian woman in the kitchen knows how to cook.
Their samosas are very good. (They're also available in the fridge to take home fresh and bake yourself). My girlfriend had something similar to palak paneer which was pretty spicy and good. I also had something that was fantastic, but can't remember the name of it.
Apparently they also have Flakes. The chocolate candy that's only available in Ireland. They have the legit Irish chocolate. It's not Canadian. Go get one. You'll thank me later.
I don't have a lot of experience with Indian food, but I am definitely impressed. The food is made quickly and is very tasty. What I liked best was that the owner, as soon as he finished ringing up the customer at the front counter, made sure I knew of the menu and that they even had a book with pictures of each item so you know what to expect. It should be noted that this book was of the actual food, not your usual too-good-to-be-real pictures.
The only downside is that there is a $10 minimum for credit/debit payments.
I'll be going back there again and again.
I read the reviews on the web about this place and went there to buy some grocery. But in fact I think the prices are too high. Some of the prices written on the shelf from where you pull the item may not be the price you pay, its higher. I realised that only after I checked my receipt. Â The pickle we bought for 4$ was gone bad already. The Murku/Chakli that they had fresh prepared, was not at all fresh and tasteless, waste of 3.5$ for half pound! Otherwise,The store is well maintained but overall I am not satisfied with the store. Cannot comment about the restaurant as we did not go there.
Review Source:Even though the dining area had a small dining area it is a place we will be returning to. We got to watch a Bollywood  movie, and the owner was very nice and helpful. The menu with the pictures is very helpful. And the Samosas were YUMMY!
Very affordable, with a indian grocery store attached.
Probably not a helpful review since I didn't actually eat here ...
My wife and I went in here looking for pappadum and tamarind sauce. Â We found what we came for and were going to buy a block of what we thought was Indian rock candy. Â The owner questioned what we were going to use our "rock candy" for and it turned out we were planning on eating a big hunk of glue! Â 5 stars for the owner of House of India!
Blink and you'll miss this place. Â Seriously this is in a tiny strip mall surrounded by other strip malls and a lot of wide open spaces. Â It's packed with Indian foods and various cosmetic items and doo-dads, and has a little restaurant in the back where they serve a truly impressive array of food.
We stopped on the way back to Chicago for some samosas (Jim contends that they are the best driving food ever, and I think I agree.) which were so good that we pretty much finished them before we got through the main intersection. Â I stocked up on pappadums as I am the pappadum queen, and I also scored a jar of coriander chutney, a bar of sandalwood-turmeric soap and a couple of prepared items I'd never seen before. Â There were also bags of turmeric at prices so low that I ended up buying the smallest (almost half a pound) bag to use instead of the capsules I currently take as a supplement.
The owner was super nice to us and let me sample one of the snacks that line the front counter. Â Prices are fantastic, and if you're looking for Indian staples, this is a terrific place to go.
I am convinced that samosas are the best driving food. Pair it with a Fanta and you have a great trip ahead of you. House of India has great samosas, and an equally great selection of groceries. The staff has always been very helpful, answering any questions I've had. If you need naan in a hurry, they got it; mango juice, ditto. Great prices also. I'm really glad we have this store in the Region, I think it's a must checkout for anyone who wants to try something new.
Review Source:For the best Indian in Chicagolands, go to Devon. For the best Indian in the southlands/nw Indiana, go here!
Nadine summed it up, this is the best Indian in the area, but Taj Mahal in Orland Park is also quite good, and for me quite a bit more convenient.
If I have any excuse at all to go to Schererville, I will eat here over anywhere else.
My husband and I stumbled upon this grocery store/restaurant while shopping in Schererville. Â What a find! Â This is a really well-stocked indian grocery store, with everything you could possibly need to make a fabulous indian feast, as well as an excellent selection of frozen and heat-and-eat meals. Â However, it is so much more. Â The sign in the front of the store says,"Indian Fast Food", but really there is a full-blown vegetarian indian restaurant hidden inside this place. Â The kitchen is tiny and there are only a few tables, but the food is fantastic! Â There is a notebook with pictures and descriptions of everything, including southern indian treats like dosai, veda, and thali (combination plates). Â The samosas are the best I have ever had...and my dad was Indian and made kick-ass ones! Â There is also a counter at the front with some homemade indian sweets and snacks...so good. Â This is a family-owned business, and the owners could not be nicer! Â The wife does the cooking, and the husband runs the register. Â The first time we went, the husband gave us tons of free samples of their food, and everything was great. Â The next time we went, we ordered our dinner to go and had a nice chat with the wife, who made our food to order. Â It takes a little while, because nothing is pre-made, but it is sooo worth it. Â Again, when we were checking out, the husband gave us some free samples and threw in some snack mix for us. Â You'd have to go to Devon Avenue to find another place like this, and I doubt you'd find an establishment that was this friendly. Â If you like Tandoor, the indian restaurant down the road, you should really give this place a try. Â It is not big on ambiance, but the quality of the food and the friendly service are really exceptional. Â I like to support small businesses, and this one really deserves a visit.
