I've always rcoomended TJ Stone's when someone ask me about a goood place to eat, therefroe, I though it was good to post a review.  My wife and I work in the area and often get home too late to cook.  We say, you know what, let's go to TJ Stone's.  In addition the the good food, they are super friendly.  I remember one incident where we were just walking by and one of the staff person stepped outside to speak with the same firendliness that we would get ordering food.  That deserves a 5 rating.

Great pub fare and atmosphere. Great service. Pulled pork was very tasty with Carolina bbq sauce. Baked beans...eh, probably canned. Side salad fresh and tasty. This place is a fun and tasty oasis in this part of town, since it seems everything else around closes at 5!

It's more like 3 & 1/2 for me.  Everything was good, but nothing stood out.  Service was nice and pleasant.  Foods were generally good (I was with a big group so I got to try many different things) and not as salty as other typical american restaurant.

I probably won't go out of my way to eat here but be happy to eat here if I'm near the neighborhood.

    Bad service, worse food.

After being greeted by a hostess far more interested in her phone, we were brought to a table where a waitress harassed us until we ordered.

Stay away from the burgers, the meatloaf, and likely the menu.

A good neighborhood bar TJ Stone's might be, a quality dining establishment it is not.

It's a tough call for me, picking between the burger and the steak sandwich.  They battle back and forth in my culinary arena depending on mood, but I have to say when all is said and done it's the steak sandwich that I can't live without.  The meat is tender, the sauce is heavenly, and the bread is somehow both crusty and soft at the same time.  The burger with swiss is one of the best I've ever had, especially with a side of sweet potato fries, and the burger is half price on Mondays. So, by the way, is wine... which isn't hard for the cute waiter to talk me into so the week can get started right.

There's parking, there are less tourists than King St, and I have yet to eat anything there that I didn't care for despite making this a regular stop.   Have dinner on the patio if it's a nice night.  Have appetizers and one of the amazing selection of beers in the bar on nights you want to watch the game.  I've not made it there for brunch yet, but will have to look into that some Sunday as I am a big eggs benedict fan and they supposedly do that well.

I live in the neighborhood and frequent TJ Stone's with my husband quite often.  The bar is always lively and the people who go there range from locals to traveling business people.  The atmosphere is awesome and laid back.  The beer selection is also spectacular - probably one of the best in Alexandria - however, the food could be better.  It's pretty standard and tolerable, but not one of the best parts of going to TJ's.  Don't plan on anything healthy either.  If you like BBQ however, the Kansas City style sauce is worth trying.  Love to see the bar in the neighborhood doing so well though.

One of my favorite places to go in nova. I've had the BBQ sampler and it was enough food to share with my gf and then some. I'm a big fan of Mac and cheese and they have the best of any restaurant I've been to. In addition, the beer list is insane and I always try something new when I go. Highly recommend for some delicious BBQ. And try the truffle oil chips, they were amazing!

    Overall 3.5 stars

Stopped by on a whim looking for something quick to eat. I go the Stone's Steak Salad-HOT DAMN! This salad was soooo good. I couldn't finish it because it was so hearty but the steak was flavorful and the greens really fresh. For the salad (4.5 stars). I also tried the sangria which was pretty refreshing on a warm day.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention  the patio. I sat on the patio because it was a nice day outside. I was enjoying myself that is until I got a face full of cigarette smoke. Apparently the smoking area for this place is out front but down wind from the eating area. Once I figured this out I was no  longer enjoying that gentle breeze in the air as it came with gush of smoke.

But hey- its a sports bar with a dive like feel in the bar and  casual dinningesk feel in the restaurant. Some might call that the best of both worlds I suppose. Interesting concept but the steak salad was the bomb so can't complain too much.

TJ Stones is on my roster of regular places to go.  Here are the things I like about it:
    --never have problems finding parking compared to other places in Old Town;
    -decent wine list;
-I enjoy their steak salad and occasionally they make some really good specials
-I like the fireplace in the winter time.
    - I like that you can choose to sit in a sports bar area, nicer dining room area or in nice weather, outside.

    Downsides:
    -Some of the menu items are a little overpriced;
-some good servers, some less-friendly servers

Nice neighborhood bar. Good food and drink. I recommend  it!  The bar is large enough to eat in with a number of high tops, a long bar and some booths.  There are choices for those who want to eat healthy - tasty salads - and those who want to go the burger and wings route.  Food is better than average bar food.  Even though we live in Del Ray, we often find ourselves making the trek over to North Old Town.

First try. BBQ brisket sandwich - the NC Sauce was nice and tangy the way I like it, but the brisket couldv'e used another 6 hours in the smoker. Not tender enough. Good sweet potato fries though.

This was a nice surprise. The noise level in the bar area was high because of the TV volume, but the food was above average. The bacon wrapped meatloaf was great. It was not overcrowded on Saturday night.

Sports bar with a semi-divey feel, multiple screens around the bar. Street parking, clean bathrooms down the back. Ordered the monthly special of slow-roasted beef short ribs, and per the server's recommendation the pork ribeye instead of the Guinness beef brisket stew.

Pork ribeye was better in value and execution. They were happy to substitute the mac and cheese with mashed potatoes. The beef was tender, but imparted minimal flavor despite the traditional Asian ingredients advertised. The sauce just tasted like too much soy. Green beans were pretty straightforward, but the quality of the jasmine rice pilaf (more almonds than mushroom) bordered on offensive. Okay, probably should not have trusted a pub to do something like this properly.

If I came back, I'd probably stick to abusing my liver and not my taste buds.

From start to finish, TJ Stone's left something to be desired.  The place could be making a killing if it could get itself together enough to not step over it's own feet.  And it didn't appear from the number of patrons that they were seriously hurting for business.  Maybe that's why TJ Stone's is current nothing more than mediocre at best.

This was our first visit there.  The hostess could barely look up long enough from her cell phone to help us get seated.  Our server, while nice enough, appeared to not want to be working.  She did the minimum required but the amount of times we had to ask for things (silverware, ketchup, water) was a bit much.

The most disappointing aspect of TJ Stone's was the food.  My Bubba burger (which is supposed to have tons of extra goodies on it - cheese, onions, bbq sauce, etc) looked like someone had sprinkled a piece of cheese or two on it and let it sit under a lamp.  The meatloaf that my husband and friend got was super spicy and didn't appear to be that warm.  Overall, it was a bit embarrasing that we took our friend there.  I've had better service and burgers at Applebee's!  I wouldn't go back.

In my quest to find my neighborhood bar, yelp lead me to T.J. Stone's. I like that it isn't too far from home and off the tourist heavy King Street. I was impressed by the beer, wine and liquor selection as well as the number of t.v. screens. I had the calamari which was fried well and not chewy. It had pretty good flavor and didn't leave me feeling like I just ate grease.
I also had the fried chicken. This was also good, flavorful and fried nicely.

I will continue to come here and partake of the drinks and food, particularly when football season comes back around.

Wandered into this bar after an interview at the Crown Plaza Hotel (From Philadelphia, so literally wandered).. what a pleasant surprise. Bar tender/server was very friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and a great amount for the prices (which aren't bad at all), good beer on draft and I would definitely recommend.

First visit to T.J. Stone's.  Was meeting a friend and her coworkers for lunch.  Like Zelly W. said, it's off the beaten path which was bad for me (took a 1/2 hr to get there from Mark Center) but whatever, it's Friday.

I was greeted right away by the bartender/server and he was awesome.  Didn't get annoyed when I asked the name of the wines available instead of just the type.  They had a decent wine by the glass, the chenin blanc (Ken forrester Petit), pretty surprised by that.  Recovering from a root canal yesterday, so I had 2 glasses (and yes I'm back at work now, don't judge me).   One lunch companion had steak salad which looked great.

The French Onion soup was good.  Have I had better? Yea.  But I really appreciated the service we got, the bartender was also the server.  Seems like he ran the whole restaurant at lunch and he did it well.  Asked me if I wanted another glass of wine which is always a gold star for servers from me since it makes me seem less alcoholic-y.  To leave a restaurant and feel like you want to be loyal and visit again because of the service is big in my opinion.  i think it speaks volumes about a restaurant's integrity and quality.

Generally OK but not great as a restaurant. Been here a dozen times. The only thing I've ordered more than twice is the fried chicken. The BBQ is acceptable but I have a hard time eating BBQ in a nice place with a fireplace. There's a dissonance I cannot describe, but it's there.
Since I'm getting too old to drink like I once did, I won't presume to rate the beer selection. It's probably fine. In my long experience, "after the first one, they all look like sisters".

Nice digs.  Comfortable.  Holds maybe 50 people.  Nice selection of beer (bottles, cans).  Bartender (Erin) was very friendly, helpful, and attentive (he gets an "A").

Food - I had hummus (three types) and grilled winter veggies with bow tie pasta.   Food was okay.  Nothing spectacular.

I thought $2.75 for ice tea was a bit pricey.

Summation:  If I was going somewhere to have a couple, watch a game, or hang out with friends, this place is a contender. As a dinner destination, based on my limited food choice, nope.  Food = bland, touristy.

    ***

Right next door is hautedog -- higher end hot dog place.  I peaked in the window.  Looked cool.  I checked them out online, this is their 3rd store (I think).  A Saturday afternoon place for lunch I'd opine.  Worth exploration.

TJ Stones has excellent HH specials and a delicious BLT salad. The bartenders are super-friendly and professional. The food is pretty good, but the selection is weak. There are very few options that are even remotely healthy.

I was disappointed by the veggie burger, which seemed to be fried. I find that to be strange because most people order a veggie burger at least partially for the health benefits.

If it were up to me, I'd never end up here but it's conveniently located, so there's that.

I have been here more often than I care to admit and I remain largely unimpressed with the food. The wings are probably the one item that I'd order again, though the sauces are nothing spectacular. The last thing I had there was the oyster po' boy -- while it wasn't bad, it is not something that I would recommend. The bread was too soft and it was overall bland.

The service is fine, nothing to complain about, though I did witness them messing up an order on two separate occasions.

It's off the beaten path (which is good for me since it's not in a place with heavy foot traffic so i can get in, get a seat at the bar and it's never too crowded) but the bartenders here are the best as a whole I've ever come across. I used to stay away from this place because it looked empty and nothing worth coming to but I am so glad i gave it a chance and came because it's just about my new favorite place in Old Town to go to for beers.

The bartenders really know their stuff, they are educated, fun to talk to, funny, super nice, and they remember you. The beer selection here is the best in town. They have plenty tvs for sports, etc and the people who come here are all pretty nice too. The food is decent. Some things are better than others, nothing GREAT here but it's worth coming here. If for nothing else, you should come for the beers and good conversation with the bar tenders.

Some of the drinks are very pricey compared to other places though but that's only certain beers.

This place is NOTHING like the restaurant previously occupying this building (Stardust).  TJ Stone's is a gem.

Very quality, but not pretentious bar food

The lighting makes it interesting and warm.
    Gouda tater tots
    Spinach dip
Choice of five or so different BBQ sauces.

There are a couple of choices of daily specials, which are different from what you will find on the menu.

They used to start you off with seasoned popcorns, rotating the flavors each day.  The garlic one was fantastic.  Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like they're doing that anymore.

The bacon-wrapped meatloaf is on the regular menu now.

The blue cheese dressing tastes a bit odd, but their homemade ranch is amazing.  The buttermilk fried chicken is crispy and juicy.

The triple-dipped wings are completely awesome.  They have a super crispy akin, nice char and they're very meaty.  You don't often see high quality meat on wings, but you'll find that here.  You can choose your sauce, and they're all fantastic.

TJ Stone's has a huge beer selection and lots of wines.  The bar area is always buzzing, and there are lots of TVs to watch the game.  The dining room is really well done with cozy lighting.

Their regular menu is pretty good, but I almost always end up getting something on the daily specials menu, which always features different entrees not on the regular menu.

Reserving the 5th star for a future visit but on my inaugural visit, the place was packed, great beer selections, nice happy hour menu, and nice full menu.  We had one appetizer off the happy hour menu, sliders, and one off the regular menu, pork bbq quesadilla.  Loved the sliders, quesadilla was OK.

Also, the staff was great.  Attentive, always there when you needed them, just great.  I could have done without the Wednesday Night Trivia Game which was a guy with a really loud speaker hooked to a mic "entertaining" the bar.  Honestly, it did seem that the patrons were having fun, just not what I was there for.  I was there for a couple of hours during which time the crowd converted from a slightly older after work crowd to a youthful after work (read much louder but having fun) crowd. I might try another night next time.

Also, It's connected to a nice restaurant so that looks pretty interesting for a future visit.

Went for lunch with my wife and Mom. Picked it because it was right around the corner from the hotel where my Mom was staying. Went we first went in we were really pleased with what we saw: a fireplace with an actual oak wood fire! it smelled great and added to the atmosphere of a nice looking room. I ordered a grilled cheese and tomato 'wich (the special) and a bowl of chili. My dining companions went with salads. My grilled cheese was tasteless. Couldn't tell there was even any cheese in the thing and the tomatoes just tasted bleh.  The chili was okay.My wife reported her salad as bland and my mother who usually has nothing bad to say about anything "didn't think it was very good". Looks like a nice place to get a beer but the food was a big disappointment.

I guess this is an apt place for my 500th review as we have just moved down the street and this has become our new football bar replacing the beloved First Down Sports Bar and Grill in Arlington.  We have probably been here at least 5 times already so I feel like I have gotten to know this place pretty well.

Great Beer List:  Tons of options, including some favorites like Seadogs and those Belgian lambic beers I am addicted to.  My new favorite from here is Tommyknocker's Maple nUt.  YUM!

Friendly Service:  We usually get the same waitress and she is very nice and friendly, as well as prompt and other servers we have gotten have been nice as well.

There are also tons of TVs so we do not miss a football game, and they have a great salad called TJs Summer Salad, great french onion soup and boyfriend really likes their wings.  There is often a deal on wings.  We were there early enough for brunch the other day and I found their pancake meal to be delicious and they had $3 mimosas!

Despite all this, I think food is also their weakness.  Maybe because I am not particularly fond of bbq, I have trouble finding things on the menu that I like.  I was annoyed/disappointed by the gouda tator tots - I expected a basket of tator tots, and instead for $7 there were 3 little balls on a plate.  I didn't love them either.  They are also missing key menu items for a bar like ONION RINGS or loaded potato skins.  Or pizza.  I noticed it was on the kids menu but nothing for adults.

Then, there is a small portion of the menu that says those meals come with sides - other than that are we allowed to order the sides on their own?  I don't like any of the meals the sides come with, but would like to try their fries or mac and cheese!  Obviously this is a question I could just ask at the restaurant but they should probably make the menu a little clearer.

Trivia night was good, but not as good as Rock Bottom Trivia with Jay.  There was an interesting wager system that made it pretty tough and a little more exciting.  I would definitely do it again, and it is probably my 2nd favorite trivia.

I would give the service a 5, beer menu a 4 and food probably a 2 just because of what I feel is a lack of options.  The food score is kind of weighted because we go for football games which last usually 3 hours and having food is important during that time.  So I think it balances out to a 3.  But it is really a 3.5 and I definitely enjoy going here and am glad we are so close.

Went here for restaurant week, and had a very good crab cake and a nice bottle of red wine. Wife had the beef wellington, which while properly done for the meat, the pastry was a bit on the "collapsed" side. More like pie dough than pastry dough. Still good, just not quite as nice as others we've had. Daughter had cheese pizza, and was nicely accomidated. Grandma had the steak salad which was good too. Gouda potato bites were a winner. Only real mistake was that I ordered a salad with my crab cake, and it never showed up. I cancelled it, and there was no charge either... just disappointed it never arrived. Ambiance was loud, but also a lively bar scene was partly to blame.

Bottom line: Will be happy to return for the food. But will watch the service.

Our hotel was down the street and we needed a place to refuel/drink.  We walked in and the place was dead, but oh well...

Ordered a beer, bartender was friendly but did a lot of texting on her phone.  Manager would joke around with her.  Some server would come and talk to them and complain about his table.

Burger came out, on a dirty white plate.  Think its time to buy new plates?!?!?!  French fries were horrible, tasted like they were from the day before and microwaved.  Burger was uneventful.....lacked anything to justify the price.

Want to watch a semi-obscure sporting event?  TJ Stone's probably has it.

Want to drink delicious Abita Purple Haze and a HUGE variety of other regional beers?  TJ Stone's probably has it.

Want to eat the most delicious magic fairy dust truffle chips with spinach dip? TJ Stone's DEFINITELY has it.

TJ Stone's is North Old Town's go-to for a relaxed sports bar, with classic no-muss American cuisine.  You could do a lot worse, but you can't do better.

Bummed that I wasted a Saturday night here, to be honest.

I'd been craving a burger and I noticed this place on the way home from Trader Joes, so I suggested we try it that night. So we did. I made a reservation, but I didn't need to - there was one other table in there. The bar side was packed with people watching the Caps game, but the restaurant side was empty. Anyway, I ordered a French onion soup to start, and when it was placed In front of me it looked like it had a Kraft American singles slice of cheese on top.. I was immediately turned off. My burger was thin and overcooked. Sweet potato fries were crunchy enough, but wayyyy too salty. Bf had a chicken pot pie and seemed to like it, but agrees not worth a sat night out.

Service is good and the servers are always helpful with the menu! I like their quizzo night as well! :-) This place is very close to my work as well so I will definitely be a frequent patron now!

We came here last night for an office happy hour. Here's the perks:

    1. I called in advance to warn them of our large party (20 people) and they were more than happy to accommodate. I spoke with the manager, Shawn, and he helped me choose a day that would work best for our group. I was looking at a Wednesday, but he let me know that was an ever-growing trivia night and probably wouldn't be the best for a gathering since tables get snatched up quickly.

    2. I arrived at 5:30 with my husband and we grabbed two 6-person tables. Had we not gotten there that early, the tables would definitely have been gone (one almost got taken while we were standing at it!).

    3. We had two staff members dedicated to our tables. While they were tending bar and taking care of others as well, they were doing their best to get to us in a timely manner. And they were always on the look out to see if I was motioning them to our tables to help us out. They were incredibly friendly and so accommodating.

    4. The bill was all put into one, but as people left, they pulled out what each person had so we had our own tabs. It was so much nicer than having a huge bill come with 20 credit cards.

    5. The decor itself is great. I only spent time in the bar, but walked past the dining room and it looks like a great place to enjoy a dinner.

    6. My veggie burger was fantastic. It has a great lemon flavor and it was really hard to take half home, but worth it to have it today for lunch!

One opportunity is the exterior. It looks like a fun and comfortable patio, but if I didn't have the address I would have driven right past it. Perhaps there's more color or something to bring attention to the outside?

We'll definitely be back. The office had a great time together and the bar facilitated that as best as anyone could have. Great job!

The veggie burger was pretty interesting- lots of falafel. I didn't mind it but it was a little unorthodox.  The service wasn't particularly good - they took a while to get to us and the food came out pretty late.    The bar was pretty loud but they had it set up so it didn't carry over to the dining area.

The location isn't too good - I suppose it's walkable from old town but it's by itself  with nothing of interest adjacent.  A groupon took me here and while it was okay, I doubt I'll return.  If the location was better I probably would.

This is a much nicer place inside then it appears on the outside.  Very nice atmosphere.  Went here for dinner and had a nice dinner.  Was very interested in trying the tater tot, but can't say I was impressed with it.  The tuna I had for my main meal was nice, nothing special.

Went back several weeks later for Sunday brunch and do not recommend it.  I had the pancakes and the portion was about the size of 2 coasters.  Not impressed.

Not sure I need to go back.

We popped in this afternoon for a couple of drinks and a little football, and I think we've found a new spot in the neighborhood.

First impression, I liked the space but wasn't so excited about the fact that the bartenders were totally OK with people saving seats at the bar on a crowded Sunday afternoon. But one of those groups offered us up one of the chairs they were saving, so while boyfriend had to stand, at least we had some space at the bar.

The beer list is outstanding. The drafts are pretty basic with a couple of good ones thrown in, and lots of bottles. Definitely not as good as the beer list at Rustico, but its up there. Prices are a little higher than I'd like them to be, but not awful.

They had wing specials going, so we got 10 wings. They were OUTSTANDING.  Plump and juicy on the inside, yet nice and crispy on the outside. I could have eaten a whole lot more than the 5 I ate!  The menu looked great, and everything we saw come out looked fantastic. And the prices seem right too.

Service at the bar was wonderful.  Usually I'm not comfortable being a smartass with the bartenders until I've been there a few times, but Aaron made us feel right at home from the time we walked in.

We will definitely be back to try out the happy hour specials and the regular weekday crowd. I wish we had tried this place a little sooner!
