It's new, so still looks nice. I've gone here three times during lunch with coworkers. They have a sweet lunch spot, right next to a big office building. BUT the food and service suck. Four of us went for lunch and were held prisoner. We ordered 3 soups, fries, salad, and side mac and cheese, and no special drinks. Yet they managed to keep us there for over an hour. Cream of tomato was seasoned tomato chunks. Mac and cheese was surely Kraft. Fries were cold and limp, so we sent it back and came back warm and limp. It's too pricey for the quality of food. I would know, I was in the industry and could tell you exactly how much those items cost. After the busboy cleared our tables, we waited for 15 minutes for a check. Finally, I got up and walked around the entire restaurant searching for someone. I almost walked into the kitchen when someone stopped me. I told her we needed our check and she smirked like SHE KNEW our server is slow. While still waiting for the check, I was able to get on my winter gear, walk out, smoke an entire cigarette and come in to find they had just brought he check out. JTs, you're still new, but get with the program. Lunch spots are a dime a dozen.
Review Source:I love JT's and hope it lasts. The waitstaff are incredibly nice and very accommodating, and I've never had anything but wonderful service. The food is very good: I had a salmon salad a few weeks ago that was very good and there was more than enough for leftovers. Hopefully people remember this a bar & grill, not upscale dining, and that JT's has a long life here in Evanston.
Review Source:While the ambiance is great and the space itself is really nice. SERVICE IS AWFUL.
I visited J.T.'s for the first time as a part of a special event. On that night, there was an open bar special where $25 afforded you unlimited drinks all night. The bar tenders were extremely unpleasant, ignoring me several times and mixing sub-par beverages. I understand that with the influx of anxious college students, the entire experience was stressful, but unfriendly service should never be an option, no matter what the case.
To give compliments where they are due, the food that I did taste was delicious, and i would be willing to visit again on my own. Perhaps the service would be better then.
One of the worst restaurants I've ever been to. Â My wife and I walked into an empty restaurant and were never greeeted, so we sat ourselves...first bad sign. Â A dishelved server walked up to our table and asked if we would like something to drink. Â I ordered a craft beer and my wife a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. Â 15 minutes later, my warm beer was served and my wife, a glass of warm Chardonnay...second bad sign. Â We proceeded to order a BBQ Chicken pizza and cheese quesadillas...not a difficult order. Â 35 mins later no food...3rd strike...our patience ran out. Â This place won't be around for long, but I felt compelled to share this story with all. Â An outright waste of time.
Review Source:I hate to write this review because we usually like going to JT's for late night meals.
THIS REVIEW IS FOR TERRIBLE SERVICE
Unfortunately the service has been terrible the past few times. We've had the same server in the past and he was great. But lately he has lacked all good qualities of a server. He was on edge and incredibly impatient! He'd come to the table to ask us if we were ready to order and before we had anything to say he'd just leave. We were speechless. This happened multiple times throughout our visit. He rarely checked back on us, but with his attitude I was glad he didn't. The check took forever. I had to ask another server, who was also aloof, to bring it out. We didn't get a chance to ask for separate checks and since we were such a small party we wrote the divisions on the back. He didn't understand and seemed very frustrated with the situation. The entire time, as guests, we felt we couldn't ask our server anything because we had no idea what was going to tick him off. What really confused me was the fact that it was past 11 pm and we were one of 5 tables being served.... Clearly his hands weren't too full.
I hope that everyone in Evanston skips WORLD OF BEER and goes straight to J.T's Bar and Grill!!! Â My friends and I were appalled at how we were treated when we stopped in to WOB for a late night drink, and instead decided to hit up J.T's, since they have food, liquor, AND are open later! Â The service was outstanding, they were so sweet and attentive, and didn't make me feel like I was a terrible person for ordering a drink (like they did at WOB). Â All of the food was delicious (I got the patty melt and a side salad) and we ended up staying for a long time, just getting to know the waitstaff. Â I hope that everyone in Evanston skips the opening of WOB and goes straight to J.T's, where the service and the atmosphere is definitely 100% better!
Review Source:This place is very confused. Â They have no idea what kind of place they are. Â Please note I am writing in regards to their dinner and I'm wishing by everyone else's reviews that I had skipped that and went in for breakfast instead.
The atmosphere is actually kind of nice. Â Cool bar, I could definitely watch a game there. Â Nice server/bartender too, but also seemed kind of out of it.
Confused... lets just say I can get a great glass of wine in a pretty glass but the cup they gave for water is one you would find at Denny's. Â They really could upgrade a bit to a small glass. Â Also, they kept the weird area to the left where you walk in as a dessert case. Â It looks completely out of place and if they are a "Bar and Grill" there is no need for that. Â They really should have changed that up.
So the atmosphere doesn't match the menu at all. Â None of the appetizers stood out to us so we ordered a side of sweet potato fries to start out with. Â Welp... they came last. Â They were ridiculously over cooked and had no flavor of sweet potato left. Â We had to ask for a side of honey mustard... which was an even worse idea because it was nasty. Â We both got salads. Â Mine was really blah, I didn't even eat more then a few bites. Â My friend had a chicken caesar that I think she was fine with but its hard to mess that up. Â
Their prices on the menu were also different than what we were charged. Â Luckily it was less but I really think as a new place they should make sure the menu and the register are ringing up the same.
So, from what we had I definitely wouldn't eat there again for dinner. Â I'm open to trying breakfast. Â
Sorry, J.T's - you let me down. Â Maybe stick to breakfast.
Went for breakfast and had a superb vegetable omelette. If I kept a list of greatest omelettes, this would be in that group. Also delicious potatoes and side of pancakes. Large portions. Coffee pretty good too.
Roomy and very comfortable, and very good service.
We went at 8 am, and glad that the sound was off on the TV. So if you peek in the window looking for a relaxing place for breakfast, don't be put off by the TV.
If the menu reminds you of Clarke's, it should - I do not know the full details but that a part of the Clarke's ownership branched off and opened J.T's. The quality of ingredients is noticeably better -- I have not had cold cafeteria style meats in my skillets yet. The pancakes are much better as is the service. Our waitress was the most gregarious waitress I've ever met, to the point that I am not sure if she was drunk or not.
The ambiance, space, and location is also much better. Comfortable booths, TVs, a orange juice machine, a large show oven in the middle of the dining room, the aesthetics are very good. The fact that it is also a bar and is open until 3am every day pushes me to give 4 stars. Â
As far as pricing goes, it seems similar to Clarke's but you'll get better bang for your buck once you realize the better quality.
reminds me of Clarke's, except with more options and a little cheaper (like a dollar, but hey, that's good for college students!)
One thing that really stood out to me was the fact that they gave us a small complimentary sample of their homemade minestrone soup the moment we got seated... really made me feel welcomed and soup was delicious!
a lot of food for your money and it's good. Four stars and plus one more for the complimentary soup.
A new all day breakfast joint in Evanston. Just what those late night NW students need. Evanston is finally getting some restaurants that make sense downtown: JT's, Cheesie's and Found.
I remember visiting the former restaurant that used to be in this space before the economy went into the crapper. It's a good space near the Orrington Hotel. I like that they have added flat screen tv's. Although I don't feel like this is a warm and cozy sports bar. I'd prefer to hit up Bat 17 for some sports, beer and better food.
I went in late AM on a Sunday. I ordered an iced tea and was informed they were out. How are you out of iced tea?? Â Poor planning or management. Opted to order the Mexican omelette. Very good value. Â Massive omelette, home fries and a side of pancakes! Â Ridiculous. So much food for nine bucks it's sure to make those NW students tack on the Freshman 15 in no time! Â I also checked out the menu and they have tons of pub food: burgers, pizzas, sammiches, Mexican stuff and did I mention Breakfast??
Good spot for some breakfast, especially if you have a hankering for some after midnight.
I was recently visiting Northwestern and had to grab a bite to eat before heading to a 9:15am info session on campus. After asking an employee at the Sheraton where to eat breakfast, we decided to try out what he informed us to be "a new restaurant" in Evanston. Right away, their sign caught my eye: Open from 7am-3am. I couldn't believe it!
We were seated and brought beverages right away (granted, it was early on a Friday morning and we were the only ones there). The overall atmosphere was very nice. The music was young and upbeat. The decor and seating were very comfortable and professional-looking.
As JT's prides itself on breakfast, I had to choose from the enormous number of options and settled on an omelette. I soon found out that homefries and either toast, an English muffin, or two pancakes came along with it! I have never been to a restaurant that offers a side of pancakes in place of toast for no extra charge! By the time I got around to touching my pancakes, I was already full on the omelette but attempted to eat some pancakes so as not to be wasteful. I planned to only eat a bite or so, but the pancakes were so tasty that I couldn't resist eating more! As well, the hot chocolate was tasty (especially the whipped cream, which I found to be  noticeably better than average restaurant whipped cream). I was sad to find out that JT's makes fresh-squeezed orange juice, as I would have loved to try a glass before leaving for the info session at Northwestern!
Overall: good service, Â friendly employees, exceptionally nice atmosphere for that type of casual dining, great menu with lots of Mexican food options, good prices. I could easily imagine Northwestern students going to JT's at 3am.
If I could rate it 4.5, I would. Nothing is perfect, after all ;) However, a 5 does it much more justice than a 4.
A few growing pains, but what can you expect when a restaurant has only been open for 3 weeks.
We stumbled upon J.T.'s last night after the place we were going to go was too crowded. Â And so glad we ended up here! Â The food was delicious. Â I had a burger with sweet potato fries and the boyfriend had an omelet. Â
The biggest issue was the slow service. Â I understand that it was an issue in the back with the chefs, but we also seemed to have 5 different servers throughout the night and they all seemed a bit confused. Â It would have been nice if someone had simply told us that the kitchen was running slow. Â But this is something that I'm sure will be fine once they've been around a little longer.
I will definitely be coming back to check out more items on the menu. Â Breakfast foods all looked really good and wow there were some indulgent burgers. Â And totally decent prices so that you don't break the bank. Â That's always a plus in my book!
And the owner gave us free cake when we were leaving, so that was pretty awesome.
I couldn't believe how good the pancakes and fresh OJ were... Their burgers are superb, too! Half-pound of fresh ground beef, with a wide variety of toppings, served on a white, wheat or pretzel bun with steak fries, skinny fries, or waffle fries, $9. I just got a burger topped with with feta cheese and gyros, which was succulent, rich and delicious. Service couldn't be better, staff are friendly and eager to modify things to suit individual tastes. This burger is far superior to 5 Guys, which will cost as much for double cheese and fries (though 5 Guys Fries are better). It is more comparable to pricier burgers like Leonna's, Hop Leaf, Bat 17, (great burger, but $12+) etc. So, in this neighborhood, taking value and quality into equal account, this burger is 2nd only to Edzos. And they are open about 3X more hours than Edzos. Again, the fries are pretty standard at JT's; sadly, their fries are not competition for Edzo, 5 Guys or Weiner 7 Still Champion. Still, everything and everyone about this place is so great, it deserves 5 stars. My friend got eggs Bennedict, and the hollondaise was legit. Kudos.
Review Source:cheap and yummy! to be fair i was playing garbage disposal and eating all my friends' leftovers since i showed up late, but the bacon & potato & cheese skillet was delicious even when it was cold, and the small side of fruit (sweet and fresh tasting) i got was pretty large for "small" and only $1.50. coffee was standard diner fare but wasn't burnt. just wish there weren't TVs every freaking where, but i get distracted easily and don't care for sports so it's probably just me.
Review Source:I enjoyed my first visit here, but a series of strange occurrences have really put me off of it. First of all, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the prices were well under $10 when the restaurant opened. Now you can't get anything that's not $9.99, so it's in another class of eatery that it can't compete in.
The tagline of this restaurant is ironically accurate -- "Just Great Food". The service is ridiculous. We've had insanely attentive servers, servers who have ignored us even though the place was empty, servers that didn't have basic courtesy to think to bring syrup with breakfast plates, appetizer orders that came out at the exact same time as the rest of the meal, you name it. We like the food a lot but every time we visit the service makes us question why we didn't stick to our agreement not to come back.
