Khyber is probably my favorite place in the city. Â Don't be scared of the hipsters at the bar or the dark interior. Â I've never had anything I wasn't a fan of, and man have I had some delicious things off the menu and the board specials: Â Pulled pork nachos, fried green tomatoes, crawfish etouffee (not on the menu but always on special--get a "small" bc it's pretty darn big). big-ass biscuit & gravy and the beignets (a friend claims khyber is the only place she'll get them outside of new orleans). Â
The drinks! Â I have tried MANY bloody marys and theirs is definitely the best. Â And the frozen mint julep( when the machine is working) is really yummy and very strong. Â Lots of great beer on tap, revolving, in casks, bottles, etc.
First place that my gf and I went to in Philly during our first road trip together. I couldn't have made a better choice. The atmosphere was really chill and relaxing during the heat wave on Friday. We started with the cornmeal crusted oysters and split a mixed green salad. Both were incredibly delicious. I ordered the brisket sandwich w/ mac n cheese. She ordered the fried green tomato BLT w/ okra. We both had affairs with our food. The beer menu was really neat and organized. The cigar city brown ale was stellar on tap. The service was fine. Surprised that there only seemed to be one waiter working in the middle of the afternoon. I really can't wait to come back here again.
Review Source:I have passed by Khyber Pass Pub probably dozen of times with no thoughts on going in until my friend and I made it a goal to hit all of the 2012 Top 50 Bars in 2013. Â She had been before and raved about it. Â I was in the area by myself and thought about walking in but found the outside a little intimating which maybe why never thought to go in before. Â My next time in the area I wasn't alone so finally made it in the door and wish I had sooner. Â It your run of the mill dive bar. Â Bartender was super friendly and informative. Â Had a dark and dingy dive bar feel but the high ceiling made you feel like you were in a more open space. Â I would go back next time I am around there and not hesitate to go in alone.
