My boyfriend and I went here on Valentine's day and loved the entire experience! We arrived 15 minutes earlier than our reservation time and we thought we would have to wait to be seated, but the gracious host sat us right away. The host greeted us like we were VIPs. When we say down at our table, we couldn't help but comment on the ambiance and decor of the restaurant. The space was open and inviting- it was upscale, but also felt comfortably casual at the same time. Our server was very friendly and the service was quick despite the large crowd.  We started with the dumplings ( we got steamed beef) after reading a review on Yelp recommending them. There were 6 dumplings and they were incredible. I would've eaten just those the entire night. We then ordered the sushi and sashimi starter, which includes the chef sushi specials. The presentation was beautiful and the sushi and sashimi were spectacular. I thought I had experienced wonderfully fresh sushi before, but this was, by far, the best quality, freshest, and tastiest sushi and sashimi I have ever tasted. There is an extensive and varied menu that can fit anyone's craving- Thai, Chinese, Japanese.  This is a place that I will be suggesting for a girls night out, another date night, and when having dinner with my parents.

Koi is terrific, both in terms of service and food. I was there on a night when I needed the Chinese equivalent of comfort food. I sheepishly admitted to the waiter that what I'd really like is egg foo yung, expecting him to flash an understanding smile and then suggest something more inventive. "We have it," he  said. "But it's not on the menu." When he brought out the dish, it was amazing. There were two patties topped with a great chicken stir-fry done with my list of favorite veggies. The chicken was wonderful, light years away from the usual bone-dry white meat found in most stir-fries.

Great food. Love the place . Had to wait long for dinner but server and management  took great care of us so can't say bad word . You should definitely try. Highly recommend.

Koi is one of my favorite Sushi places on the north shore. I have dined in and ordered delivery on  multiple occasions. Delivery is relatively quick and the dine in experience has always been good, both at a table and at the bar or sushi bar. We have ordered both sushi and off the China town menu. One of my favorite dishes is the Eggplant with sole. There are a lot of options at Koi, and many types of dishes so besides just sushi, its more pan asian fare. That said, there are lot of options, and they run a lot of specials so I would advise spending some time on the website before heading out. Also, get's crowded on Friday and Saturday nights, so make reservations.

I've only ordered delivery here via Grubhub (Koi has deals for orders $15+ and $25+), so I can't speak for the dine-in experience. I have been in the restaurant before though, and the decor seems very dark, a little too dark imo.

The Chinese food for delivery is very good though. It's on the pricier side for the portion given, especially for your average Chinese-American dishes, but everything is done very well. Flavorful, and not just over salted/msg good. Somehow even the Chinese-American staples (Mongolian Beef, lo meins, fried rices) taste somehow better here, a bit more delicate and less greasy. Their duck sauce is different too, sweeter with a rosy aroma - I like that more too, though the bf really preferred the normal ones to theirs. Overall, food is definitely worth their slightly higher prices.

Oh, and I did try the pork belly bao too - really authentic and the flavor is amazing. Unfortunately, it's ~$10 for 3 little sandwiches with one piece of pork inside each, no other toppings :(

I thought I tried everything but this was an unbelievable experience . We were served by Dan and he was very helpful kind and fun. We had   I have to say FREAKIN amazing crabmeat wontons and after that general tsao's with chicken shrimp and beef . And the most amazing of them all the Mongolian chicken with crispy rice noodles. Just great!
Definitely if you come to Chicago visit this place in Evanston ! I give you word it is going to be amazing!

Chinese at 10:30pm on a Friday night in a suburb is a difficult thing to find, especially when you would rather bypass the typical take-out style fare. After being stood up on my 'date.' (what a loser I must be) I met with some friends and opted for what I described as "somewhere classy but kinda cheap." Koi is what I got, and although the manager was very rude upon entrance, our kind and humerous waiter helped us order a cornucopia of foods. Authentic Chinese restaurants should be regional and should not have sushi on the menu; if they do they are a hybrid. Koi had a trendy, modern layout great for dates. The staff besides the manager was helpful and our first round of soup was a bit of a disappointment, lacking much flavor. We got the special soup of the day, but the crab Rangoon was amazing with a nice wasabi sauce. Next came a series of sushi rolls, one type was warm deemed "dragon fire." it was very good, but not much fire in it...overpriced sushi, decent low mein, bland soup and good service. I need a return to get a final verdict, but the food didn't please me in terms of taste.

How can you mess up fried rice?  Also the fun chow was horrible!  The only thing good was the chicken wrap appetizer!

My wife and I love Koi. We've been going here for 7 years, ever since we moved to Evanston. Also get Koi for delivery.

Some of our favorite entrees are General Chicken (low fat), Mu Shu Wraps, Mongolian Beef, and steamed dumplings.  Sapporo beer on draft here, too!

A nicer option for Chinese on the Northshore. Make sure to friend them on Facebook for promotions and discounts.

Koi is a legitimate Chinese restaurant when you EAT IN.  If I were rating only the restaurant food, I'd give it 4 maybe 5 stars.  There are a lot of authentic dishes in a clean and intimate environment.

Don't, however, expect the same quality of food when getting delivery.  I've ordered the same dishes delivery after eating them in the restaurant, and each time I've been utterly disappointed.  I called to complain to the management and apparently they have an "express" kitchen that is supposed to use the same recipes.  But they clearly use poorer quality meat and have a completely different spicing ratio.  I'm disappointed because I really enjoy eating in at Koi.  This will be my last time ordering delivery from there, as I've been disappointed too many times.

Dined at Koi last night as a spur of the moment and my boyfriend and I really enjoyed ourselves. We were greeted by several members of the staff who were very polite. Our server ( I can not remember her name) was very helpful when picking menu items. I am a bit picky with sushi yet she was very accommodating. We really enjoyed the Volcano and California roll. Drinks are priced well and for a quick decision to grab dinner cost us $50.00. We will absolutely be back and recommend to give it a try!

I came here last night with a group of girlfriends.  I was impressed by the crowd, a few tables of ladies, a couple of families, and some people on what looked to be dates.  All were well dressed and looked happy to be there.  I would say atmosphere and wait staff is what Koi really has going for it.  Our waiter (I can't remember his name) really made our experience and would be the main draw for my return.  He was that great.

The food, however, disappointed.  I ordered the steamed vegetable dumplings.  The outside of them reminded me of what happens when you microwave something too long.  They didn't really seem steamed and their contents were oily.  I had a a similar issue with my chicken lo mein, also oily.  The California roll and vegetable maki were fine, but it almost takes effort to mess those up.

I was really disappointed because I had such high hopes for this place upon walking in.  I am giving it three stars for service and ambiance, but probably won't be back due to disappointing food.

Downtown Evanston is a rather lively spot for suburban fare. There is the pick of several restaurants and a friend had recommended that we got to Koi before taking in a show.

Edamame. Warm sake. Riesling. Volcano roll. California roll. Shrimp tempura maki. Shrimp fried rice. Shrimp lo mein.

As you can tell from the listing, we enjoyed the food. The service got scrambled after the 7:00 crowd poured in rapidly. I can only imagine that going from relatively empty to standing room only can induce a feeling of anxiety and the wait staff is practically plunged into a state of frenzy. It's noticeable when the service goes from attentive to "help me" in a short time.

Although all of the dishes were delicious, the maki rolls stood out more. Whenever I return again, I shall sample a few more maki rolls and make those my main fare.

Koi gets a 5 star rating for their customer service! The food is also great too. My bf and I went here for the first time this past weekend for a late dinner. I think we got there around 9:30 or so Saturday night. We ordered a handful of dishes, my favorite being the pork dumplings! Or maybe the Philadelphia roll...gotta love the cream cheese! Anyway, we had a minor issue with one of the dishes we ordered but the staff at Koi went above and beyond what was expected of them in dealing with the situation.

Besides the food and great customer service, Koi has great ambiance! I loved all of the candles and flowers they had placed around the restaurant. Made the place feel very zen.

I ordered the Har Gao, and I enjoyed the dumplings very much.  We received great service as well.  However, I can't say the food is amazing enough to earn 4 stars.  Service and cleanliness definitely surpass those of most restaurants, but there's nothing too special about the food.

I don't usually write reviews on Yelp, but after my experience at Koi the other evening, I felt it was necessary.
Hosting an important event can be stressful, because you want to make sure everything goes perfectly.  If I had Joey (Koi's event coordinator) around for every party I had, then all of them would be perfect!
From planning to execution, Joey and his colleagues were fantastic.  With just a few descriptive words of what I was looking for, Joey was able to create a beautiful and tasteful event for my guests.  I received great feedback from those who attended regarding the food, service, and atmosphere.
There was just one small interruption in the evening (a rude table treating the staff horribly), which Joey took care of.
I've never had such fun planning and hosting an event.  So thank you Joey and Koi for a wonderful evening.  I will definitely be back.

For several years I have always enjoyed going to Koi for casual happy hours with colleagues or dinner with friends. The food always hits the spot (favs include dumplings, curry plates, and signature sushi) and the ambience is lively. I also highly recommend the delectable and educational monthly sushi chef's table.

However, I didn't realize how amazing Koi was until I started planning private parties for work. Koi's event coordinator, Joey, makes it FUN to plan these events. He is professional, attentive, and detail-oriented.

Typical guests of my work dinners include corporate executives, former politicians, university students, and occasionally even young children. I've witnessed Koi's staff treat my guests equally with warm, high-touch customer service.

On occasions when I'm working with a smaller budget, Joey always comes up with creative ideas and selections so that the overall high quality and experience is never compromised. He is also very accommodating of dietary restrictions and people who are just plain picky! I also commend Joey for defusing unruly, loud nearby tables before they can infringe on other guests.

Thank you Koi for making my job easier! I look forward to planning future events and stopping by soon with my friends and family.

This restaurant doesn't even get half a star after the service had there tonight.  It's gone from my fave to I will never step foot inside it again.
The ambiance inside is typically loud - the walls are high, lots of echoing.  Had a birthday dinner there - 8 guests - all mature professionals.  Between 8 people about 10 beverages were purchased.  Point being this was not an immature, inexperienced or drunken crowd.  We were seated next to a bunch of fun loving college girls who were banging sake shots on the table and having a laugh.  We didn't mind.  We were enjoying our meal and having a few laughs too.  Perhaps a few were hearty and a little loud but, absolutely nothing outrageous.

We had just finished mains when a women approached, Michelle she says,  new Manager - oh I thought how nice she is coming over to check on our food!  I couldn't have been more wrong.  She proceeded to inform us that she has received complaints about our table being too loud.  We were honestly shocked, and a little incredulous given what had been transpiring at the table next to us.  She remained table side for an inordinate amount of time, repeating over and over again, until we said "OK we've got it"  Please move along.  After embarrassing us, she comically then asks  could she get us anything else?  Erm  that would be a negative ghost rider...thanks much but just the check!  We thought that was the end of her scene.  But no.....as if that wasn't bad enough a few minutes later a rather chubby chap - Joey walks over full of bravado and says, "do you have a problem here?"  with the grace and maturity of a teenager raging with hormones.   I think my mouth hit the floor.  He was unnecessarily  aggressive and antagonistic.  One of my guests spoke with him and complained about how we were being treated.  We were all quite literally dumbfounded.  Joey too just couldn't stop himself - couldn't walk away  oh no - the insolence, rudeness and belligerence continued....until my guests couldn't sit there in silence any longer.....some stated how infuriated they were for driving over 20 miles to come here to be treated this way...and his response " ok well you have to get out now!"   I told him to p-off we were trying to leave.  And what does the ever graceful Joey yell as he's walking away???"Get the F**k out now!".  I am not kidding!  The entire restaurant gasped out loud.  The waiters kept apologizing profusely - said we were lovely guests enjoying a nice birthday celebration.  Apparently Michelle and Joey didn't agree.  So a $400 tab gets you embarrassment, humiliation, told to eff-off and an absolutely horrendous experience at Koi.   Try Pine Yard instead...also on Davis or Joy Yee Noodles....much nicer people!

Congrats, Koi, for being my first one star review!

Generally, I'm pretty kind in reviews... I have only given out a few 2* reviews for extremely poor food/service.  But Koi is a winner - they left me and my husband really irritated and angry after our experience, which is a guarantee that we will never be patrons of this establishment again (and this was our first time).

We went to Koi as they were participating in Evanston's holiday bash, stating they were offering $2.50 appetizers, $5 spiked hot chocolate, and $5 lychee sangria.  Upon entering, we confirmed with the host who said it was only offered in the bar.  No problem!  Off to the bar we went.

We ordered a few appetizers off the menu, and a couple spiked hot chocolates and lychee sangrias as well as some sushi.  The entire time, the bartender was extremely busy (and it looked like a lot of prep work), ignoring his customers, not being very helpful or attentive at all.  When we wanted a second round of drinks, we asked which kind of sangria he thought was better, white or red, and he replied "I don't like sangria" and walked off.  We got no help as far as what people tended to like, and he didn't even end up taking our drink order then since he just walked away!  We understand he was busy (although the prep-work he was busy with should have been accomplished previously), but this was the worst service we'd received as far as we can remember.  (Note: we ended up getting the white, which tasted more like lemonade with hardly any wine/alcohol whatsoever, but was better than the hot chocolate nonetheless!)

Now for the food.  We had a few Chinese dim sum apps and a spicy tuna maki roll.  The Chinese food was below average: the spare ribs were fatty (although relatively moist), the shrimp dumplings goeey and EXTREMELY fishy tasting.  Maybe that's typical, but this was so fishy I was worried we might get sick later...  The sushi itself was unremarkable, the tuna having been almost pureed and the CUCUMBER, of all things, being the star of the maki roll.

One thing they did well was they brought out some complimentary spring rolls and crab wontons for everyone, which was a nice touch and at the time, we thought would have warranted another star, even though again, these were also slightly disappointing.

What broke the camel's back was getting the bill at the end (after having asked twice) and not receiving the discount on the sangria or the appetizers.  Upon mentioning it to the bartender, he had no idea of the holiday bash deal, and had to check.  He checked with someone who said the sangria was $5 on Mondays.  But we produced the flyer and only then did they relent and give us the $5 deal (apparently, there's a major issue with the management here!).  But then, the appetizers were still never discounted.  When we asked, the bartender said that oh, those appetizers were on a special menu and rattled off a few items.  We had no idea what he was talking about, and he said he thought he gave us that menu... but he did not.  It was not inherently obvious that only those appetizers and those alone were $2.50, and thus we were stuck paying full price for disappointing appetizers at a place with major missteps and lack of communication.

Thanks, Koi, for introducing us, who newly moved here, to a place that we think has horrible customer service and subpar food.  There are so many asian/asian fusion restaurants out in Evanston that are so much better and in most cases, for so much less.  I recommend to NOT go to Koi - never again for us.

Did the Chef's Table.  Couldn't ask for a better deal.  Chef Kenny was fantastic and Joey's wine pairings and personality made it an even more wonderful experience.  Can't wait to do it again.

Had a friend come into town and needed to find a great place to go. A few friends had suggested Koi and I am so happy we decided to go there. From the time we entered the door, we were treated with great customer service. We ordered a few appetizers, which came out in good timing. The Pork Belly Bao  Soy, sugar, bao, tender, smooth $9.95 was INSANE! We also loved Mu Shu Wraps
Stir fried, served with pancakes and hoisin sauce Chicken $11.95, Pork $11.95, Shrimp $14.95, All 3 $15.95, Vegetable $10.95.

For the larger plates, we tried General Tao's Plate, which was unreal. We also tried the whole Red Snapper, which is a hard dish to get right, and Koi was spot on! They had amazing sushi as well. I can't wait to return with a different group,so they can enjoy this amazing place as well! I also looked on their website, and it seems like they have great events too! <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.koievanston.com%2Fevents.asp&s=b927945b009f569b3a641e4a3d8bed5aa446de8e9177fb36145e61e4b518a0d9" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.koievanston.c…</a>

Having never tried Koi, we decided to order delivery from here the other night. We ordered several items that we've enjoyed at many other Asian restaurants: Tsao's Chicken, Pad See Ew, Chicken Satay and Crab Rangoon.

The order arrived in a respectable amount of time and the food appeared to look just like we'd seen it at other similar places.  Unfortunately, it all had a very "fishy" flavor to it.  Everything that had been fried in oil took on a strong taste of fish. I really don't like fish at all (which is why I ordered chicken).  To take a big bite of General Tsao's chicken and immediately wonder if I'm eating battered catfish is just not cool.  Also, the pieces of chicken were not very high quality meat and there was a whole lot more batter than meat.  I next tried the Chicken Satays and they also tasted like fish.  It then became apparent to me that they must be deep frying everything in the same mix and after a while, everything's gonna start tasting like whatever else was cooked in there earlier.  My wife's Pad See Ew was much better, but it also wasn't fried.  I'm pretty sure that if you like fish, you won't be disappointed.  As for me, when I order chicken, I want it to taste like chicken.

I was surprised when reading several negative reviews of Koi, because walking by it always looked and smelled so good. After some persuasion, we decided to go here for my boyfriends birthday with his parents. His mom had also heard the negative reviews and did not want to go.

We went on a night where the back room was closed for a private party. We arrived at 7 pm and were seated promptly (we did have a reservation). The front room was packed full, so I was anticipating slow or unsatisfactory service. This was not the case. Our server was prompt, bringing drinks quickly and offering advice on the menu.

We ordered a mix of sushi and a couple dishes from the Regions of China menu, and all was delicious! The sushi tasted fresh and the flavors complimented each other nicely. The Chinese dishes had the authentic flavors of China. Overall, the experience was great! I give 4 stars because for something to deserve 5, it has to blow me away.

I've never cared for places that try to do both Chinese and Japanese cuisines, because they tend to do neither all that well, and Koi is no exception. On a nice summer day it's pleasant to sit in the front room with the floor to ceiling windows open, but don't expect to get life changing sushi here. For the price I expect more.

I'm always wary of restaurants who claim to do sushi and Chinese food well, but I was pleasantly surprised with the satisfaction I received in eating both cuisine at Koi.

My friend, who is an international student from China, suggested we order the Spicy Beef and Hog Maw from the Chinatown menu. (Koi features specific dishes because the exotic ingredients are readily available with Chinatown in proximity.) The beef tongue, stomach and intestine (ie. tripe) were tender and the marinade was the right amount of spice. However, my friend said the meat would traditionally be a much thinner cut.

For the entree portion of the meal, we shared a Volcano Roll and a Chicago Roll. Both rolls had the just-right ratio of rice to fish. In the end, my friend and I agreed that we liked the Chicago Roll more because of the slightly sweet sauce paired with the heat of the spicy tuna in it, rather than the overabundance of the crunchy bonito flakes on the somewhat flat flavor of the Volcano Roll.

Prices were decent during lunch hours because of the prix-fixe menu and a slight discount on lunch portions of specialty dishes. Service was friendly and consistent. Decor was sleek with dark wood and Asian inspiration.

I am docking a star mostly because of the fact that there was some sort of vegetable debris (possibly broccoli?)  floating in my initial glass of water. When I pointed it out the server, he apologized profusely and promptly got me another water.

I'm writing this review as an open letter to Koi's Management.

    Dear Koi,

What happened to to the good old days?  From 2004-2007 you were almost a five star restaurant. Now you're really a 2 1/2 star restaurant with low quality food.  I think your sister restaurant Chens is way better. How can the Wrigleyville restaurant be better?  Luckily for you, my mom loves bad Chinese food so we keep giving you business.  However, very soon I'll find some other bad place to take her.  Please go back in your time machine and make delicious food and drinks again.  I can't keep going there being underwhelmed and over charged for bad service and food.

    Sincerely,

    Bruce B. in 2005.

Last night, I was fortunate enough to go to another one of my favorite restaurants. This may be in my top 3, if not my number 2 favorite so far. I went to a place called Koi, which is located right in the heart of downtown Evanston.

<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.koievanston.com%2Fhome.asp&s=3a1992c97d82d22de8f59347c12225b385b2f1067b64d9f33dc8d2bb5b5ef95a" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.koievanston.c…</a> They also have a location in Chinatown but I have yet to go there! On this lovely visit, we ordered edamame for an appetizer, Bruce's Favorite Maki, and some Sweet and Sour Chicken. The edamame was a huge helping, especially for $4.50. I was pleasantly surprised to see so much of it in front of me. There was more than enough for me to share with my friend. Next it was time to order. I adore sushi, I really do. But sometimes, I get sick of the same old, same old. One of the things that makes Koi so great is the diversity in rolls to choose from. They have the standard sashimi plates, or big platters of simple rolls, but they also have things that are unique! In the past I've ordered a Dragon Roll, which was absolutely divine, little on the spicy side but I enjoyed it.

I love trying new things, so we decided to order Bruce's Favorite Maki, which had lobster, avocado, wrapped in rice, and was covered in the Chef's Special Sauce, which was kind of tangy, similar to a sweet and sour sauce. I really liked this. The fusion of flavors was on the side of uncommon, but in a good way. Avocado and lobster pair extremely well together, which was probably my favorite part of the roll. I would absolutely order it again.

For the Sweet and Sour Chicken, I certainly can't complain. Though I loved the small twist they put on it. The sauce was tangy and yet still sweet, which is exactly what I expected. However, they put cucumber in. Now normally, cucumbers aren't my favorite vegetable, but the crispness brought a new taste into the mix that pleasantly surprised me, in a refreshing way.

Overall, love this restaurant for their imaginative creativity with the menu, and consistent quality of the food that they serve. I wouldn't come back if I didn't love it, so that should show you why it's so great

Decent sushi, ok appetizers. Fun drinks.

HORRIBLE service!!! Bad bad bad. Our waiter was downright rude. Walked away mid-sentence and actually rolled his eyes at one point. Had to flag him down for water twice. Gratuity was included for our party of 5 unfortunately so he made off like a bandit. Boo.

I have been going to this place over the past years and it was always a fairly decent experience. Until last time. As soon as we walked in, the entire staff seemed to have been chatting behind the entrance counter. My partner said that she saw one waiters whisper something to another waiter and then both of them proceeded to laugh (at us, it seemed). We sat down. After analyzing the situation, I realized they indeed laughed at us. Enough to never come back. Want to insult your clients? Fine, though everyone on the internet can now find out.

Decent food. I've been here numerous times for catered events, where they set aside the back half of the restaurant aside for our group. I think our event sponsor ordered the Beijing package for our whole group, which included:

    Chicken Satay
    Crab Meat Won Ton
    Spring or Veggie Rolls
    Sesame Chicken
    Mongolian Beef
    Shrimp Fried Rice
    Stir-fry Vegetables
Tempura Banana w/French Vanilla Ice Cream

I've also been here for a friend's birthday, and my boss at work sometimes orders from here for our weekly planning dinner meetings.

Overall, decor is cute and service is good, but the food is just mediocre. This isn't a place that I would come to voluntarily with friends, as I'm a bigger fan of Joy Yee's for Asian food in Evanston, but I'd happily come here for sponsored events.

    a -ok.
Came here for my birthday with a birthday email.
The email said come 7 days before or after birthday and get a free entree but in small tiny print it said that you have to buy 2 entrees and you get a third one free.
So I was pretty embarrassed when the waiter boy came back pointing the fine print that I did not read that closely before. He said  I could not use  unless I ordered more. So I did as told.
No birthday wishes, kind a cold, no cake..when the table next to me got one :(
Whatever it is just a cake...no big deal and I do not trying to be mean I am just sharing my experience.
The plum wine was really good.
Probably will trash those emails in the future.

Nice decor and had a back room people had rented out which is nice. Great ambiance and waiters were super friendly!

The only thing I would recommend here is the fried chicken wing appetizer! Very fresh and savory.

Don't get the sushi rolls! Not fresh at all-- honestly one of the worst I've had in Chicago. Way too large rice:fish ratio.

Also the manager that night was quite rude. It was a random weekday, and the restaurant was more than half empty but she gave us a really hard time when we ask to be seated before our two other friends were there (they were parking). It's just the manner she said things was just very dismissive and not friendly. Also my friend was standing there for a good five minutes before anybody greeted her or anything.

    Oh Evanston- another disappointment.

It's official! The people of Evanston enjoy really crappy restaurants. Koi is no exception to this rule!

The quick and dirty: Good food and some of the consistently worst service I have ever seen.

I was with a group of 8 and placed in the backroom with two other 8-10 tops (two groups of 8-10 people). There was 1 server for all of us. He couldn't handle one of our tables let alone 3. He greeted us after about, no joke, 10 minutes. Messed up how we wanted to divide our bill and then ignored us for the rest of the meal.

I'm really disappointed, because I wanted to like this place, but alas, it's in Evanston, so it has to suck royally.

I think I'll just quit Evanston restaurants all together now.
