Lively, even on a Sunday, which is a welcome rarity in Atlanta. Â The place felt warm and welcoming.
I had a very good roast chicken and a pretty good calamari appetizer. Â My friends' gnocchi and pasta special, on the other hand, were outstanding. Â I loved the wine list and the friendly, professional service.
I'll probably go back, order a pasta dish, and knock this sucker up a star.
I will admit that I was a little intimidated by the menu. Â I do not eat Italian too often, and I really have no idea how to navigate the menu. Â So when in doubt just ask the server what's good. Â Fortunately the service is great, and everything the server recommended was delicious.
We started off the night with Mozzarella Burrata, which was a complete gamble for me. Â The waiter recommended it because they flew the cheese maker from Florence to Atlanta. Â He described how the cheese would lose some of its quality going through customs so they just up and moved the cheese maker. Â There you go. Â The dish was absolutely delicious, and the spiciness from the Calabrian chili oil combined with the freshness of the cheese and cucumbers was amazing. Â I would absolutely reccomend that dish to anyone.
For my entree, I ended up with the Mushroom Ragu Tagliolini since the server recommended it, and I really liked it. Â The truffle oil can be a little overwhelming for some people, but I really enjoy truffle oil. Â I could probably drink that stuff straight up
On Monday's La Tavola has $10 pasta night, which is a great deal. Also, if you order an appetizer portion of pasta it is $5 cheaper on any night. The portions are big so the appetizer portion is a good deal as well.

We came on a lazy Sunday evening and had a very solid meal. My wife ordered the artichoke salad & fettuccine bolognese, while I chose the pork cheek appetizer and squid ink and calamari pasta. After a few minutes I was informed they were out of the squid ink pasta so I chose the braised rabbit gnocchi.
I was so pleased they no longer had the dish I originally ordered because my default rabbit gnocchi was awesome!
Decent enough service and a relaxed atmosphere. A great neighborhood trattoria.
I went here for a small birthday party. The location and everything is very nice, as you would expect in the Highlands but I've had better food. The service was good, it was very busy and we had a party of about 7 people and we were seated fairly quickly on the patio after a majority of our party arrived. The waitress was pretty attentive which was nice. Regarding the food, we were all pretty disappointed with the portion sizes, they are tiny and for me it just wasn't everything I would hope for with the price I paid. I had the gnocchi and I'm just saying if your gnocchi tastes the same as the one from Olive Garden there is a SERIOUS PROBLEM. I may try again and update, I'm always willing to give a second change.
Review Source:We came to La Tavola to celebrate a number of recent events. Loved the interior and setting. Beautiful restaurant, with a nice cozy atmosphere. Reminds me of an upscale Parisian bistro.
Our waiter couldn't have been more helpful. He was extremely knowledgeable and even served us a dessert sampler, on the house, to make our celebration extra special. Customer service here really can't be beat!
I gave four stars because the main course could've been slightly better. I ordered the salmon, medium rare, but came out medium. Other than that, the food was delicious and inventive! Love!
We love this place, it is small and dark and feels like it fits into the neighborhood in just the right way. The food is usually amazing and this night did not disappoint. We started with a bruschetta which consisted of a toasted bread with cheese, oiive oil and fresh green 'things'. I was expecting tomatoes but wasn't disappointed after tasting it. I also had a "precocious" pinot noir who's name escapes me at the moment but it was the one at the middle price point so I felt good about it. I decided on the daily special which was a sautéed king salmon on lentils and peas. It was light and flaky and flavorful, a great choice. Finally, we even splurged on a flour-less chocolate cake for dessert with a cup of coffee. A great choice.
Fifth group restaurants rarely disappoint. La Tavola is a gem.
A recommendation, if you are planning on a quiet evening avoid the patio. They share it with the adjacent restaurant, Noche and it can really be loud at times when a large group of over served diners are camped out.
This place was great- tried it out last weekend for a birthday dinner! Â Were able to get reservations on a limited notice which was nice. Â The grilled calamari was awesome - a nice twist on your average battered dish this is clean and flavorful. Â I had the ravioli and my friend had the gnocchi, both of which were good! as a bonus they offer half portions which i love at any place that serves pasta. Â I had the half however and somewhat wished I had gone for more. Â For dessert we had the salted chocolate and marscapone cheesecake both of which were great. Â The service was spot on and I would come back for that alone.
Review Source:We went here in October(late review) and the experience was OK.
We had a 10pm reservation and we ended up arriving a little early. The hostess offered a table that was approximately a foot from the hostess stand and we informed her we would wait from another table.
The food was good but I don't like when the staff acts like I should be grateful to eat at their place of employment. There are too many great restaurants in Atlanta to deal with attitude.
We celebrated our anniversary there and were very impressed. The food was fantastic but I thought the service was stellar. The hostess and wait staff were so accommodating, particularly when we ran into friends and decided to join them at their table after my wife and I had already finished our appetizers. Nothing but good things to say on our first experience there. Well done guys.
Review Source:La Tavola was such an amazing experience. Â My husband and I were running late for our dinner reservations and the hostess were SUPER accommodating for us. Â Once we finally arrived, we were catered to throughout our entire dinner. We had an amazing waiter, Jimmy who was very knowledgeable of the menu. Â Honestly, every entree on the menu sound so good, but my husband and I ended up getting the squid ink linguine with the veal and prosciutto entree... to die for! Â We had the braised cheek for an appetizer and the chef sampler for desert. The waiters/waitresses seem to work together, which is great! Â There doesn't seem to be one waiter/table, which allowed us to see a variety of personalities (all were great). Â We will definitely be BACK!!!
Review Source:I really like the atmosphere at La Tavola Trattoria. Â The interior seating area is fairly small and cramped, but there is an outside seating area on a balcony wrapping around the backside of the building. Â Unfortunately, the view is of a parking lot but it is still nice. Â Even when there is a little chill in the air, there are heaters outside to make things comfortable.
The food is good though don't show up ravenous as with most "hip" spots, the portion size is fairly limited - though the price is not. Â I had the Zuppe di Pesce which was very tangy with a good flavor. Â The bruschetta appetizer had an excellent flavor.
It was a good date spot! I would return, though I must say my favorite VaHigh eatery remains Murphy's.
Came here for the first time and loved it! The food is awesome and I like the cozy neighborhood feel--though it is rather small. You can tell they really know their flavors and this is a place that welcomes the foodie. Great place to have a nice meal and bottle of wine with your love.
I really enjoyed my meal, but really loved our server. she was awesome! Really friendly and engaging and she offered lots of suggestions when we weren't sure what to order. I think her name was Jenna? Anyway, love her, she's awesome and really made our night. We will surely be back.
I eat here almost weekly because it is just so consistently excellent. My current faves are the tagliolini mushroom ragu and the squid ink calamari linguini. Also the GRILLED calamari is one of the best things I've had in my life, sooo much better than its fried cousin. Seriously, one of my favorite restaurants in Atlanta.
Review Source:Just read another review where it said "on my death bed I want my last meal to be from La Tavola. I would have said the same thing except La Tavola killed by favorite dish, Manicotti.
I was there in january and it was one of the best meals I have ever had in my life. Simply amazing. Â Took a group of friends back the next month raving to them about the manicotti. It was off the menu replaced by a Lasagna....not so good. Lots of places have better lasagna.
I'll have to figure out a new favorite restaurant for my last meal.
Dined out here on a misty and cool Fri evening past with 5 friends. Although familiar with the area, I was not with La Tavola. Its next door to Noche', tucked in the corner.
I was the first to arrive for my party and was immediately greeted, offered a table or a glass of wine at the bar. This effort was appreciated. I must admit I did check out the menu and photos first on Yelp but that never phases how I am going to feel concerning my experience. I will say I am torn between 3 and 4 stars so its more like 3 and 1/2 and thats primarily due to the menu pricing.
I sat at the bar and waited on my friends to arrive and all did in about 10 mins. A hostess was very accomodating, answering questions before we were actually seated. La Tavola was empty upon our arrival about 6pm but the place quickly filled upon our departure. I am sure a few in the neighborhood may frequent this place.
We were seated on the back patio which was heated. I must mention the interior area is very small and kinda tight. My friends and I sat, talked and reviewed the menu, I'd already chosen between two items and went with the Flat Iron steak, with roasted potatoes and some sort of bitter tasting thin brocolli. I did enjoy the entree outside of the brocolli and allowed others to taste as well. The steak was as ordered with a warm pink center and lightly seasoned, the roasted potatoes were divine and I'm a potato lover.
One of our group ordered the calamari which I first found peculiar but enjoyed it after a taste or two. Its not your standard calamari at all and the preparation is much different than most places as it was roasted with peppers, I recommend it for sure!
I cannot comment on all that was ordered at the table but I do recall what at least 2 others ordered...one was the Risotto Rosso and one had the Chesnut Gnocchi (braised boar)...that was interestingly odd and possibly it is most of us weren't famaliar with some of the more authentic named Italian dishes.
Our waitress was very nice and checked with us frequently. Some of the dish portions were reasonable and some were not. I am not a huge Italian foodie and the only reason I probably would not return is the pricing....
This is one of my favorite places to eat in Atlanta.  Tucked away in Virginia Highlands  - this charming gem has the best food and great wine!  My favorite is the Tagliatelle Bolognese - AMAZING!!!  A trip to the Highlands is worth it for such great food and a fantastic enviornment!
Review Source:So you know how you try to grab brunch at Murphys on the weekend but for a table for 2 the wait is 30-45 minutes?
Well there is a solution. Â Go across the street and eat at La Tavola. It's an Italian restaurant from the same company as Ecco and they serve brunch. They have all the traditional breakfast items but with the Italian flare. I will warn you the portions are small but they are quality. I had the eggs with Italian sausage and it was tasty. Service was great here. I got everything I needed. They took care of me and showed me good hospitality.
So remember, if (Murphy is too busy) + (45 minute wait) + (Me hungry now!) = Dine at La Tavola
I think for my deathbed meal, I'm going to ask for the mushroom pasta dish from La Tavola. Â It's made with truffle oil, and has this buttery taste that makes me literally cry once I've touched the bottom of the dish with my fork. I can't bring myself to try other menu items, because the mushroom pasta is my one true love.
The only thing about this place that sucks is how small it is inside.
Where to take a very discerning visiting foodie to dinner? She wants really good Italian in an inviting and unique atmosphere. I don't want to have to drive very far.
So, based on Yelp reviews,, we came here...and all are happy we did. The interior restaurant was already nearly full and looked...crowded, but we were offered a table  on the heated balcony that was perfect. Our waitress, who was both knowledgeable and personable, told us the specials in such a way that we had to try them. No regrets!
Everything we ate was delicious...and so was the suggested wine, according to our guest.
It's not inexpensive, but we thought it was worth it...and so did our guest. We will be back!
Btw, making the reservation on Yelp for this very popular dining spot simplified everything.
Went last night for dinner, based on the recommendation of a friend. Â Will question their judgement in the future.
Another reviewer mentioned claustrophobia, and they were not wrong. Â You are seated so close together that if you truly have an issue with space invasion, here is reason one not to go. Â Reason Two is bland boring food that is overpriced for what you get. Â Two of us had the lasagne, which I guess is one of their signature dishes. Â Not hot, not great, just meh. Â Our third party's main course was not put in, so his canneloni came out very late. Â The dish looked like cheese enchiladas, and he also remarked that there was nothing special about the dish. Â They did go above taking the canneloni off the menu, and brought a dessert sampler, which was very nice.
The service ranged from overly solicitous to waving someone down. Â Plates were taken without asking if one was finished. Â Bring your coat, as it was very cold inside. Â Also, be prepared for the eau d' frying oil that wafts throughout. Â Listen, I'm normally not this anti a restaurant, but it was like a kiddie rollercoaster. Â The best service of the night was from the valet at the Wells Fargo lot across the street.
30th Anniversary celebration (I'm proud to say), had a wonderful evening, including our dining experience here at La Tavola. Â Kind of embarrassed to say, but didn't realize this was our old favorite restaurant (back in the day) called Capo's. Â When we pulled up in the taxi, and got out, couldn't believe the serendipity of it all! Â
Our table was ready and no waiting for us (reservations). Â Seated immediately, and promptly greeted by our server Robin. Â We couldn't have been more happy and pleased with Robin and her expertise. Â As for our meal, we were both pleased with the taste and presentation. Â Wine selection was broad enough for my choosing, but not the high point of the meal. Â Finally, we were treated with a small plate of treats with a single candle, celebrating our anniversary.
I recommend heartily and will go again.
Went there last Wednesday, October 10th to celebrate my 21st birthday. We got in just in the nick of time before seating ended at 10 o'clock. My family and I were seated at a table right next to where the wait staff came in and out of the kitchen. Mom was less than enthralled with the seat and they noticed! They asked us if we wanted to move to the open booth.
It got better; our server Jennifer was amazingly knowledgeable on every menu item and seemingly every wine in there large collection. I ordered from the prix fixe menu, veal tongue for appetizer and duck for entree. Both were tender and cooked superbly but I wished that the duck had been a little more flavorful, that was pretty much my only qualm. My family's meals were all spectacular. Jennifer told us how the ingredients were picked from their garden: tomatoes, herbs and how everything is made fresh. I believed her, because it sure tasted like it.
The finishing touch however was when midnight struck, Jennifer brought out champagne for me and my parents, for free. She also brought us and extra sampling of desserts with a candle for me, fo' free again. It was an awesome experience. I could tell from Jennifer and the other wait staff that they were extremely passionate. I'll definitely be back tonight for $10 pasta.
I had the Fifth group coupon, so that was a nice money save. You can also bring your own wine and pay a $20 corkage fee, so I took advantage of this too.
First of all they sat us at one of the center tables and it was right next to the kitchen, way too close so the waiters would bump our chair every time they picked up their food. They really shouldn't have seats in that spot.
Salumi board - the meat was good, but didn't come with much. The cheese was minuscule and just a tease.
Pork and smoked tomato sauce appetizer - the waiter recommended this and it was amazing. Sorry I don't remember the name of the dish
Baked manicotti - this was filled with pork, which I've never had before. But I loved it! It had the right amount of cheese and the top was crisped just right
Gnocchi and rabbit ragu - this came with a lot of meat, but overall the dish was a little bland
dessert sampler - the tiramisu had too much chocolate powder, the chocolate olive oil cake was good, the cheesecake was not good, and the pound cake wasn't good either
Oh virginia highlands, I think I'm in stuck in a cycle where my disappointment in other restaurants in the area negatively affect me whenever I'm in new restaurant.
Look, this is a nice, atmospheric and perhaps slightly claustrophobic little italian bar. The problem is that they offer nothing special, their menu is very vanilla and at this point I rather go to one of those "homey" italian places, at least they are cheaper. Maybe I'm not being fair, you may want to try this place out if you love the restaurants in Virginia highlands, but if you are more adventurous and wants to be seriously impressed or even inspired, stay away.
I probably should get into the habit of writing these reviews within a few days of dining at a restaurant. Unfortunately, my visit to La Tavola Trattoria was a few months ago and I can't seem to remember all the details.
What I do remember is that the risotto with scallops I ordered was a bit bland. The grilled flat iron steak, on the other hand, was quite delicious. Their lavendar panna cotta was also very tasty and not too sweet.
The restaurant itself was extremely small with booths alongside the walls and several tables bunched up together between the booths and the bar. There definitely wasn't much walking space between the tables. I was afraid a server might drop a tray full of entrees onto my head every time he/she walked by. And sure enough, one of the servers dropped several empty dishes only a few inches away from me. Being a chilly night that night, those waiting to get seated congregated by the door and just stared at the diners in front of them.
Space was clearly not one of the priorities to whoever designed the layout of this restaurant. Not sure if the food is really worth the feeling of claustrophobia.
Twisting and contorting through the packed restaurant, I wasn't sure what to expect when I finally made it to our table on the back patio. Â Though I felt the need to leave a trail of breadcrumbs from the front door so I could find my way back out again, this table in the back corner of the patio turned out to be the perfect spot for our group of eight. Â We were able to spread out, be a little loud, and not feel like we were cramping anyone else's dinner. Â Praise should also go to our server (wish I had caught her name), for accommodating guests arriving throughout a 15 minute window, people not ready to order at the same time, and all the general pitfalls that accompany birthday groups. Â Though sometimes my group had me cringing, she handled it all with aplomb and never made us feel less that perfectly welcomed and catered to. Â She also had no problem splitting checks.
The food was just fantastic. Â Several apps were shared by the table, with the star being the grilled calamari. Â If you're a fan of the fried version that's ubiquitous at most Italian restaurants, you must try this version. Â Fresh and flavorful, it blew the salumi board out of the water. Â For my meal, I started with the beet salad, which was solid. Â Until recently, I believed I did not like beets, but thanks to dishes like this one, I'm realizing how wrong I was. Â The roasted pistachios added a nice salty and crunchy kick to the beets and greens. Â
I really appreciate that they offer appetizer sized portions of the pasta entrees. Â Though your best value would be to split an entree sized portion with a friend, as the smaller version is only $5 less but just about exactly half the size, it's nice to have the option to eat a lighter meal when you don't want to be tempted by leftovers or giant portions. Â The wild boar was a unique flavor (in a good way), and topped some perfectly cooked pappardelle noodles. Â Since I skipped the wine, my bill came to around $30, and I left feeling perfectly satiated.
Lovely place -- I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised that all of the flavors were crisp and the wine list was solid -- and LORD, is it cheap to eat well in the ATL coming from SF. We started at the bar with sole citrusy olive (delicious and tender), and then moved to their outside porch -- a perfect place to spend a warm spring evening. We did the beet salad, the grilled calamari, the ricotta gnocchi, and the fava bruschetta.
The portions were perfect and ample, and the bubbly we drank was the ideal aphrodisiac for getting me excited abt being with my favorite date -- overall, worth a visit, even if it looks a bit dark and foreboding from the outside -- the treats inside are surprisingly well executed.
Din for 2 w/ starters and mains was $62 w/ tip -- in short, insanely reasonable. Only complaints was the absent server who acted like it was a pain in the tush that we requested vegetarian buschetta and gnocchi. Please, B, this isn't some middle of nowhere diner, this is a nice resto, the chef should be more than willing, and able, to accommodate this new "trend" of non-meat eating...even in Hotlanta. Would I make a special trip back? No. But a wonderful standby to have in the neighb? Yes.
Went the other night for date night and the dining experience was great.
Things were a little rough at the host stand: first finding the stand then having someone seat us, but once we sat down we had a great time. Our server was very knowledgeable and seemed genuine, which is key.
Cocktails and Wine: Jenni had the Angelina, I Adroe You! And I has something with a hint of root beer. Both were nice starters. Decent wine list. Server knew his stuff and directed her towards Verdicchio and I went with the nebbiolo, both were very nice.
Food: The salumi tasting with cheese is a great price for how much you get, mainly on the meat front. Speck, prosciutto di parma, spicy coppa, and the house bresaola in plentiful portions. The gnocchi with rabbit ragu was good, but the wild boar tagliatelli was the star of the second course. Ended with the veal wrapped in prosciutto that had a frisee salad and an anchovy dressing that was fantastic.
Coffee: I'm harsh on judging espresso. Was surprised to receive a double when I got a single, and it was a little bitter, but I would venture to say that most people wouldn't notice it.
Service was attentive and friendly. Sotto Sotto is still the best Italian dinning experience in the city, but Tavola deserves the high score as well.
Hands down one of the best meals I've had so far this year (or last).
La Tavola has a reputation as one of Atlanta's best Italian experiences, and it's certainly a local hero in the Virginia-Highlands. Â My dinner there last night showed me why that stellar reputation is 100% deserved.
I dined with three friends on a Monday night - $10 pasta night. And we certainly put their pasta dishes to the test! All in all, we ate 5 Apps, 8 bowls of pasta, 1 dessert, 2 bottles of wine, and a round of Amaro.
Our server, Kelly, was a true professional. She steered us towards menu highlights with unerring precision. Each of her recommendations was spot on. Â She was present without hovering. She was a good salesperson without being pushy. She picked up on our clues of HOW we wanted to dine that night and crafted just the type of experience we were looking for. Hey, La Tavola mgmt team, give Kelly a bottle of wine or something. She earned it last night!
I will absolutely be back to La Tavola again and again, even though I don't live anywhere near there. Very well done, team. I wish you every future success!
I originally was going to give this place 4 stars, but thinking it through again, this place gets a 5, even though the restaurant told us the wait was going to be 1 hr and a half (it ended up being 35-40min). This was on a Saturday night around 9pm. My boyfriend and I sat by the bar instead and knowing nothing about the wine, the bartender working there made this dinner an absolutely wonderful experience. She gave us samples of wine to taste and was really helpful in picking the kinds of wines we like.
We ordered the calamari and spaghetti on top of that. The calamari is NOT fried so don't be fooled when you get something that tastes fresh and looks healthier than a salad. The spaghetti was glorious and the meatballs were so soft and tender. This was probably the most expensive meal my boyfriend treated me out to, but it was definitely worth every bit.
The wait for this place is worth it. It's small, cramped, intimate, and loud, but you'll absolutely love it.
This is by far the most romantic first-date/ birthday-dinner all rolled into one that I've ever had. Â Yes, I know this bias could also be due to the company, but La Tavola certainly did nothing to detract from the experience.
It's been almost a year since I went there (end of March to be exact) but it left a very positive impression on me to say the least. Â
We went on a rainy Saturday night and had reservations for 8:15 - I strongly advise you to make a reservation - especially on a weekend; this place was very busy when we arrived. Â The reservation seated us immediately though, and we were out on the patio which was screened in against the cool and rain of the spring. Â It was a nice view though and we could watch the ebb and flow of the rain (and the unfortunate car with its windows rolled down - bad for him, amusing for us) from our vantage point.
The server was very friendly and prompt even though the restaurant was busy and came to tell us the specials and take our drink order right away. Â She never hurried us through or made us feel rushed, however. Â
Since it was a special occasion, we began with champagne (what better way to begin any meal, right?) and an appetizer of the beet and apple salad, followed by zuppa de pesce for me (very expertly prepared) and the flat iron steak for my date. Â Even though I didn't eat everything (but really what girl does on a first date), it was all delicious. Â And for dessert the restaurant was kind enough to prepare an off-the-menu birthday dessert of chocolate flourless cake and tiramisu with a candle on top. Â It doesn't get much more perfect... but wait, maybe it does.
As we were preparing to leave, the rain decided it was time for a deluge, so instead of venturing out into what was clearly the second coming of Noah, we stopped at the bar for a few apres dinner wines. Â Two different kinds, I forget the exact kinds but both sweet and a perfect night cap to a perfect evening.
I can't recommend La Tavola more highly, honestly. Â Just go!
I went to La Tavola less than 24 hours after getting off a long-haul, international flight. Needless to say, I was jet-lagged, slightly crabby and my usual friendly attitude had devolved into one-word grunts. Â I needed a remedy. Â I needed some love. Â I needed not to cook. Â I found it all at La Tavola.
Not to sound like a teenage dirtbag, but the service RULES. Â They are completely deserving of two metal signs held aloft. Â Friendly and always willing to make suggestions, the staff were the antidote to my grumpiness. Â I felt like a regular on my first visit.
From the gorgeously flavorsome, carpaccio-like beef tagliata to the ethereally light ricotta and black truffle gnocchi with a runny poached egg, the meal was so sumptuous that I'm actually forced to use the word sumptuous. Â I actually told my date that he'd have to try things next time as I defensively hugged my plates and refused to share. Â We ended with Parmesan ice cream, as I'm a fan of any chance to combine a cheese course with a dessert. Â Â Â
Oh, La Tavola... you are a love letter to my tummy.
