The hotel this place is in is nothing short of georgeous. The lobby is very creatively designed and so is this lounge. The music was great, the night I went. There were 2 female djs playing which is a rare sight. Their drinks collection is pretty wide, tons of options to choose from. The coasters they give you are super cool. I highly recommend this place. It's very chill and a good hangout place.

The decor was fairly plastic looking, the ambiance somewhat late 90s Starbucks and the drinks poorly mixed for the price. A slice of Orlando in midtown Manhattan.

I read all these reviews and though this place would either be large like a library or that it would feel like a college campus library just with alcohol.  But it was neither of those things so talk about dashed expectations.

The space is small, like a corner library bar, almost like a lounge space for hotel guests to stop in more than anything else.  It opens into the lobby and there are a lot of people with suitcases milling about.  And it is more a bonafide lounge space/bar and I would say the library portion is purely decorative in almost like a fake way.  The books aren't real.  It is all interior design.  The best part of this place is the cow photos on the wall of which are in overabundance and comic.  There is also a free pool table in the center.  The crowd here consists of just regular people, like the kind you'd find pretty much anywhere.

This space is much better lighted on the website and the yelp reviews here on this place are quite frankly, a tease.  When you get here, the place is much darker than you would expect.   I can't imagine actually coming here unless you are a hotel guest and have some time to chill or can't sleep.  I've noticed these dark lounges in hotels that others love for the "ambiance" and "classiness" don't work for me when they don't have a view of some sorts.  I'd rather go to a place with a view or a place that is more hopping.  I won't be back here again though the cow pics were a cute touch.

No cover charge which was good and drink price is average. The mood of the place is a bit depressing and I could barely hear the music playing...

I came here for a meeting and it was really impressing. The drinks are a little pricey, but 'doable'... It is a bit too dark for my taste, and there was an older crowd, but my Old Fashion was perfect.

With two of those, the lights weren't a bother at all.

My guest loved the location and all ended well.

Recommend this spot for meetings. Not sure if there's wifi though...

What an incredible space!  The Hudson has three incredible and very distinctive bars and this is one of them!  Comfy leather couches and the feeling of a very sophisticated mansion library, you can come and fill immensely cooler than you are when you spend the evening sipping cocktails here!

Wander in here and chill for hours by the pool table or in comfy chairs. It feels like a posh estate, complete prep school types. Perfect for a cool rainy day or a Thursday.

I can not believe I created an account on YELP for this!
Was attempting to make  a reservation to play chess at the Library Bar.
Extremely rude reservationist / operator  picking up the main number.  I called back and requested to speak to the concierge. She told me the concierge has nothing to do with making reservation for chess at the Library Bar and hung up on me. After she hung up on me i attempted calling back several times and no one is picking up the phone!

Staff at the Hudson Hotel needs Hospitality Training ! (especially on the phones)
I am still calling  212-554-6000 since 7:53am attempting to make a reservation and it is 8:47am !!!
Perhaps, it is a sign to make a reservation elsewhere :D

I stopped at this bar with a group of people on a Saturday night. This is my kind of place. The drinks were strong and delicious, and the atmosphere was top notch. Definitely a mixed crowd. They have some funny cow pictures around, and a pool table in the middle of the room.

Bartender made us birthday cake shots which were awesome! Great start to our night!

Very cool venue for a date.  It's one of the more unique looking bars in the city, and it'll definitely stick out in the mind of someone who's visiting it for the first time.  Drinks aren't anything special, but it's a quiet option with a couple louder options right within the hotel down the hall.

You feel like you've wandered into someone's home: tall shelves of books soar above you, plush, mismatched chairs, chess tables, a billiards table in the middle of the room.

When we went there was no waitress service. We brought ourselves to the bar in the corner and ordered ordered "manly drinks" - the cocktail menu is rife with bourbon creations. I ordered the "Library" - bulleit bourbon, walnut liquer, cherries. The bourbon was definitely strong and it probably took me an hour to nurse the thing, but I loved the nutty aftertaste of the liquer and the sweetness of the cherries.

Drinks are expensive, around $15-20 each. The crowd is older and an eclectic mix of business people, tweed academics, and that especially dreaded class of out-of-towners (it is a hotel bar after all).

There is a gorgeous patio outside that looks like a strong selling point in the summer.

In the end Library Bar makes no fuss about hospitality. It is a wander in, wander out kind of place with a strange assortment of guests bound only by their mutual desire for a good drink. You feel rather like a sheepish guest whose gracious host has let you amble in, put your feet up on his table, drink his good bourbon, and while away an hour or two.

Came here for an event and absolutely loved the Lodge!! The space itself is spacious with two bars on either side, plenty of seating and of course decor to make you feel like you are in a lodge. The food was phenomenal, from the tuna tartar bites to the s'more grilled cheese sandwiches. Seriously, I am rarely impressed with food at events and the food here really blew me away. Can't wait to check it out in the summer when it's uncovered :)

beautiful beautiful beautiful! came here for a post-dinner drink on a weekday...

I'm a sucker for wood-paneled, library-esque lounges. the metal dome light fixture above the pool table is absolutely hideous though. Lots of little tables and couches scattered around for a relaxed drink and quiet conversation. come here for the ambiance, not the quality or variety of drinks.

I came here for a work event last night in the private "outside" area with the snow falling. It is a beautiful space but was quite cold so everyone inside was still wearing their coats. The heat kept coming in and out. I first started off with a spiked apple cider (made with tequila!) that was fantastic. Next I tried a class of Cabernet which was awful. I don't pretend to know a ton about wine and i'll admit to enjoying my 3 buck chuck, but this wine was absolutely terrible. If it wasn't a work event and my drinks weren't being comped, I would have asked for a different drink. My friend ordered a glass of Pinot Noir and it smelled like chlorine. Again, we don't pretend to know wine that well but we want it to smell normal! I can't believe some people pay $16 for a glass of these wines. I would prefer to buy a bottle somewhere for fifteen dollars!

Amazing place to come to during the holidays. The Lodge actually looked like a lodge, with snow coming out of the ceiling, wooden tables, and the best part...spiked apple cider in mugs (along with other holiday type drinks).   Overall, great place to meet friends and chat.  I imagine it gets livelier later at night, but definitely was a good happy hour spot.

Better to get there on the early side of happy hour if you want a seat. Especially one by the fire.

I know I'm not cool but I can tell you this place was a hell of alot cooler 7 years ago.  It's showing its age a bit due to the shelling it gets every weekend.

When it's quite it's a great place to unwind.  When it's crowded it gets hot and smells like dudes, but is nonetheless a fun scene.  Also, there is invariably someone making out in the hallway.  Has never been me.

Also I have never been to the patio but it looks fantastic.

Go in the summer and go early while the patio is open (I think patio closes around 10 or 11pm to keep noise down for hotel guests). That's really the highlight of the bar. The benches on the patio are grouped cozily for couples and in multiples for groups of friends.

The "library" portion of the bar is beautiful, but pretty small with a teeny bar in the corner.

Drink prices are steep and beer selection is minimal (only bottles).

I'm sure he's not going to like this, but I was there on Saturday and had my cocktail next to Chace Crawford's (um the dude from Gossip Girl, duh!) table.  When you have a drink next to your all time celebrity crush, it's a memorable experience.  The only other thing I stared at more, was the weird picture of a saucy Cow up on the wall.

And no I didn't bother him.  It was noisy and crowded and he rolled with his own entourage of guys and girls.  Next time Chace, next time.

The entrance to the hotel on 58th is unmarked, but if you see a green-lit escalator up to a lobby covered with ivy, you're there. Facing the lobby, go left and then right for the bar. Inside the bar mostly keeps to the theme, with a bookcase wrapping around the top third along the ceiling, and some books laid open here and there. The weird cow paintings and modern lucite chairs clashed, but oh well.

Outside is a really pleasant deck with comfortable lounge chairs, ottomans, and benches to mix and match according to how many are in your party. The music and lighting is kept low, so it's casual and relaxing. Drinks really are expensive, but I was impressed with the bramble that our bartender whipped up for me, even though she didn't really know it and had to go off of my description. She muddled fresh blackberries and mint into it for me, so I didn't mind paying $16.

Lovely atmosphere, love both the indoor library scene and outside patio. However, drinks are very expensive and very light. I recall our sangria tasted like a fruit punch. Friendly staff. Will definitely come back again.

PS it's kind of hard to find from the outside with the scaffolding around it and no sign.

After a day running around the park it is nice to have someplace close, quiet and comfortable for a delicious cocktail. The Library Bar definitely satisfies that need, albeit with some minor quibbles.

The room is gorgeous, with a lovely  pool table (but unfortunately the condition is sorry, I am sure there have been many drinks spilled on it). Despite the size of the room, there isn't much seating, so it has never seemed packed in my visits. The music is subtle, the crowd comfortable and the decor is charming. Unfortunately, there didn't seem to be much attention paid to the upkeep of  the table service though. Most of the tables had the detritus of many drinks, most likely from sequential guests who, like we did, simply moved the previous tenants glassware to the other side of the table. End result; at least 2 dozen empty glasses and bottles on the 6 or so tables.

The cocktail menu was nice, with a couple surprises. I opted for my favorite on the rocks, and my girlfriend had an old fashioned. The bartender was incredibly friendly, and very competently served us efficiently. While quite pricey at $16, the drinks were nice. Unfortunately when a drink hits a price point like that we tend to scrutinize more harshly, and while we were by no means unhappy with our drinks at that price there was little reason to continue and have more.

Additionally, it is worth mentioning that there is also an outdoor courtyard with ample seating and very nice foliage and ivy on the ground floor as well as their rooftop bar (The Sky Lounge, I believe?), so if the library theme isn't your style it might be worth checking the other spaces out.

Too long, didn't read version: Very nice relaxed space, not overrun. Cocktails were nice but too high a price point for returning. Definitely needed someone to clear the tables at least once every half hour.

This is a toney, high-altitude, Berchtesgaden-type environment where rich CEOs and politicians make infernal deals with Lucifer to earn more earthly pleasures and keep the rest of us oppressed and poor. Or it just seems like it.

A quieter, secluded little offshoot room from the sprawling 'pick-up' action of the Hudson Hotel bar, proper. The one with the lit floor and 18th c furniture like the ending of Kubrick's '2001'. The Library Bar is located in the same stately, grand hotel structure; entered via the same escalator; found on the same level and sits facing the same street as its bigger brother. Its completely different, however.

You will likely find it (as I did) by wandering around randomly away from the main gaggle of partygoers; down a random and shadowy hallway. No signs assist you. You're just supposed to know where it is. Its not advertised.

Once there; its quite interesting and refreshing. Quiet, reserved, studious. Walls lined with what looks like impressive, old-world hand-crafted, black walnut(?) bookshelves. There's a fireplace with a thick mantel and andirons. Snooker table. Big, over-stuffed, slippery leather armchairs, buffed smooth by the passage of a thousand derrieres.

The bar serves whiskeys and scotches in heavy crystal tumblers. Thick pile carpeting beneath your tread. Rich ambiance; serious; mature; legal; professional. Emphatically well-proportioned room; intensely square. High-ceilinged. Male. Wealthy. A place to meet your business partner's wife if she wants to 'pour out her problems' to you--or, the perfect venue to bring your best friend's 21-yr-old daughter for her first brandy and a close, confidential, heart-to-heart chat.

I consider it one of the most unusual bars in the city.  Its never as crowded as the main bar; and poses a very striking contrast. If you love the smell of old books; the ghost of old cigars; and the sight of long-legged, sultry women in expensive dresses and jewelry, reclining with expressions of pouting boredom on their flawless faces...while their wealthy masters talk about sports cars; investments; and golf..this is the place to be.

Four stars for ambiance and service, minus one star for overly high cocktail prices.

I love the setting though, as others have said--little lamps and books and pool table and comfy couches.  The place filled up quickly and after about two hours my date and I were asked to leave the couch for a reservation--no worries, we just sat at a table in the outer hallway, which was also very quiet and comfortable.  Our waitress, while we had her, was sweet and attentive.

I wasn't a huge fan of the music, which was kind of house/electronic stuff...I would have preferred quieter music more fitting to the atmosphere, but whatever.  My only real complaint is the fact that the cocktails are $16 each--I mean, really?  They weren't mind-blowingly original, and while they were tasty they weren't the best I've ever had.  For the setting I would have expected $11-12 per drink, but I think $16 is pushing it.

Definitely an enjoyable place to check out though; next time I'll probably just do one cocktail or stick to beer.

Library Bar is a really cool place to have a relaxing time while sitting in a mid-century fancy library/study/billiards room.

This place is somewhere Don Draper would hang out - classy but gritty, just like him.

Dirty martinis, Manhattans, and single malts - enjoy taking a step back to a different era.

You know in "Beauty and the Beast" when the Beast opens the doors and Belle feasts her eyes on the most awesome library ever? And it's all panning shots of books and balconies and ladders and more books? And your tiny nerd self, which should be way more interested in the singing candlestick, thinks, "I need that! I need that now!"

That is what the Library Bar is like.

    And it is awesome.

Im in love with the ambiance of this bar. its so welcoming and cozy despite the semi regal interior. It could  be romantic and intimate or could be a perfect spot to nurse your loneliness by snuggling at the corner sipping Macallan while reading Kafka or Zweig. Victorian sofas and armchairs, fireplace,  lines of bookshelves filled with books and long French window that allow ur to gaze at the outdoor terrace gives me enough material to pretend as if I was one of prudish old fashioned ladies of Brtiish commonwealth that I saw in the movies with Keira Knightley. Yes,I have quite an imagination and apparently lots of free time as well.

Pool table right in the middle of it almost always occupied which make me wish if I could reserve it just like a dinner table. that table rescued a lot people from having nothing to talk about on a business or romantic dates. when conversations start to drip like a last drops of ketchup from the ketchup bottle you say " hey, wanna play some pool?"  that keep them entertained for another couple hours.

service is very pleasant as well- bartender knows his stuff and makes really good drinks. cheers to that.

Clientele- hm, its okay. Do not go there to meet new people since there are mainly two types of people out there. First type of people you wil see are not interested in meeting anyone new. They do business, have a date or just have some Me time. The second type almost all European, and they are weird. Well, they are european, how else they should behave?

Cozy cozy cozy.  Huge working fireplace, books all around, a few great comfortable lounge chairs and couches to have a drink with some friends and actually be able to hear the conversation.  You'll feel transported right into the board game "Clue".

This is not your typical hotel bar, it's definitely a few notches above.  Especially perfect on a snowy cold NY winter's night. If you're in the mood for dancing, head over to the other bar in the hotel.

    Drink please!

After a long day of walking around and sight seeing we needed a place to stop and enjoy a cold martini.  My friend being from NYC brought me here to the library.  Its a cool spot that looks like library. Hint the name. :)

In the Library they have a bar and a pool table.  They have couches and tables around the room.  The best part is the floor to ceiling book shelves covering every inch of the walls.  The bartender brought us our drink and oh man was it strong.  Just the way i like it.  It was a nice quiet way to relax after walking all day.

This is a gorgeous lounge for you to have a conversation with a friend. Or enjoy a game of billards. The decor is very classy and looks like the study in a mansion.

However, the drinks are very expensive. There's a sign that forbids dancing. If you want to dance, you can just walk down the hall to the "club" bar at the Hudson Hotel.

You know the cover of the DVD for Being John Malkovitch where there's a little window into his brain? Well where the hell are my royalties for the people who clearly dove into mine and found the Hudson Library Bar??

I can take my mother, my hot date, my best friend, my birthday party, my work meeting, or just myself and a lovely book here and while away a great afternoon or evening. You pay the premium for the atmosphere, but some days it's worth it to pay a extra few bucks to be surrounded by beautiful furniture, whimsical art and attentive staff. There's also a fantastic spicy meaty Bloody Mary waiting for you here - and a lovely, light mint mojito too (with agave instead of sugar to keep it from getting sickly sweet.)

Don't even get me started on the garden patio oasis that lies just outside the Library's windows. The club on the other side of the floor can be too bougie for my taste, but when empty-ish, is another great room to take over when your energy level jumps above that which the library can contain. The restaurant around the bend is also a win, though more an afterthought for me than a destination.

I truly madly deeply love this bar. I also love the entrance and lobby to the Hudson, which I will recreate one day in a home of my own. Or does it even count as recreating when it seems like this beautiful corner of the world came out of the fantasy section of my brain in the first place?

This is a very pretentious bar, it's great for a drink if your in this area of town. The library has some great couches and music.

If your in a large group and get here early this could be a great spot to hang out.

My only complaint is the service, which is not great and drinks are on the expensive side.

It's been a year since I wrote my original review and I have been back to The Library Bar at least 10 times. It's just a great place. Never too crazy, bartenders are nice and pour with a (sometimes too) heavy hand. I love it because it's the appropriate place to take almost any person with you. Date, old friend, new friend, soon to be ex-friend...

Go early to get a good seat in one of the fluffy couches!!

There are two kinds of people: Hudson Bar people and Hudson Library Bar people.
Take the escalator up to the hotel lobby and head down the dimly lit hallway to your left.  As you enter the Library Bar you'll see people playing chess or shooting pool on the beautiful purple-felted table that sits in the center of the room.  If your head is spinning from the ambient lighting and thumbing music across the hall, then take a stroll over to the Library Bar.  Sit in front of the fireplace with a snifter or brandy or a $16 Martini and pretend you're in East Egg.

Like a Billionaire Hunting Lodge Library.
Slip onto the patio for a drink, or hang out in the coolest "hallway bar" on earth.

$15 for a vodka on the rocks. Pricey but the first one is worth it.

The design of this place, like the rest of the hotel, is interesting and cool.

The scenery, expensive (albeit good!) drinks and the fact that it's in a hotel lead me to believe Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen types would populate the place.  Not so - B+T brosephs and brosephines come around the later hours to to spend all the money they've saved on rent by living at home.  Typically the crowd at the Soho Grand and Gansevoort are much more...Manahattan-ly inclined.

Drinks are very good and cost around $16 - my vodka lemonade was delicious and strong.  Couches and seating are nice but often times reserved in advance by NJ and LI callers.  Cute place, great drinks but rough surroundings unless you're into girls with raspy voices and boob jobs or guys with over-gelled hair and even worse eyebrows.

It was a great place to chillax.

The drinks are pricey but the bartender is cool and friendly, the place is cozy with big huge couches, a pool table and it's low key.  Easy to carry a nice conversation.  The place outside is really cool too; feels like you are in a garden.

FUN!!!!!!  Great drinks!!!!!  Yes its overpriced but who cares!  Arriving at the Hudson is an experience in itself, especially in the Summer when you come up the escalator and catch your first glimpse of that exceptional lobby.

The bar oozes atmosphere, but i much prefer the outdoor bar in the summer.  Dont plan on staying all night unless you're on someone else's tab, but its a great place to start off the evening.

There are like four chairs in this whole huge room. Ok, I'm exaggerating -- there are probably six.

Not a peanut, pretzel or opportunity to order from a menu in sight.
