such a grandiose venue that is the essence of new york and the goal for every arts person to have the chance to perform there. Â building is built beautifully and scientifically to project the music to the maximum potential. Â definitely watch an opera at the robert koch building and make sure to sit front and center to get the best sound. Â Â now if only they had more affordable bars/happy hours... that would be even better.
Review Source:Had a great time watching "Monkey: Journey to the West."
It's both unfortunate and a pleasure to say this was my first time at the Lincoln Center. The architecture underground, above, and within are magnificent. It's contemporary done right and the buildings are awe-inspiring especially when the sun hits them during the dusk hours.
The play itself was a modern, whimsical take on a Chinese folk story. I loved the acrobatics, Chinese yo-yo, and plate spinning. What really impressed me and took me by surprise was that I loved the music as well. Sung in Mandarin with super-titles, be prepared to read, unless you already understand Mandarin! There didn't seem to be a bad seat in the house, but some seats are definitely not created equal.
Another regret is not knowing the full story of Monkey: Journey to the West. I felt if I read or was at least familiar with it's premise, I would have appreciated the storyline more. With symbolic references to Buddhism, this play is a giant Easter Egg for those in the know.
I'm nearsighted with a minimal prescription and sat on the Third Ring. I wish I brought my glasses... the view wasn't bad, but I feel I could have seen more detail (ie masks, costumes). Regardless, I still really enjoyed the play.
Last words: The Lincoln Center is a must see even for a jaded New Yorker. This place isn't a landmark for nothing. This was my first visit and will come back many more times.
One of the most prominent building and public space of North America, It is not a public venue to be missed. Â Behind this project is the powerful architects and designer minds of Diller Scofidio + Renfro DS+R, with FXFOWLE, Beyer Blinder Belle. This is a public space that has gained awards and written by many global publications. Â The leadership at Lincoln center has done a great job making sure this place is well-kepted, lively and now, a destination to be visit.
All in all, It makes me smile every time I come here and see that there's always people hanging out and lounging around. You can come here for a show, a stroll, a concert, an outdoor events, a private event, or just some sun bathing on grassy slope...So find yourself one of those excuse above, and prepare yourself for a treat that is way more than just that.
I came here to see the American Ballet Theatre perform Swan Lake. It was simply amazing. Great performance, talented dancers. The icing on the cake? I was able to get a student discount for $25. Perks of going back to school. ;)
Lincoln Center has so many different performances going on. You should definitely take advantage of the shows/discounts they have.
There are many reasons to be a fan of Lincoln Center. They offer a range of cultural performances and experiences along with ample outdoor space with fountains, seating and reflecting space.
I was there for a recent American Crafts Fair. The talented vendors come from all over the USA and offer their handmade items from textiles, jewelry, pottery, paintings, glass, woodworking, tile, clothing, and so much more -- and at approachable price points. This Fair repeats itself several times throughout the year. Check the schedule.
There was a space near the Fair for food trucks and food vendors.
I thoroughly enjoyed my first ever ballet experience here - the New York City Ballet production of "The Sleeping Beauty". Â I can't wait to return! Â But beware the Camera Nazi - the usher who trolls the aisles for anyone taking photos with their phone, camera, video recording device, whatever. Â She'll shine a flashlight on you and scold you, even if you're taking photos before the show begins and the lights dim!
Review Source:Having been to the plaza and the gift shops and such many times, I'd not seen a performance here until recently. We saw the Paul Taylor Dance Company and it was marvelous. The David Koch theatre is marvelously built for dance and the sightlines did not disappoint. Maybe someday I'll get my dream of seeing NYCB perform, but for now, my Lincoln Center experience is fab.
Review Source:Nice performance of two very, very young orchestras (highschool); uninhibited and alert especially the brass orchestra! They performed beautifully some modern works. It was the largest brass orchestra I have ever seen: 99 performers (+1 bass). It took them almost 10 minutes to fill the stage...and then imagine the feisty "Amparito Roca" ( Paso doble) coming out from 100 instruments!
Review Source:Went to Lincoln Center on a Sunday afternoon for a performance by Paul Taylor Dance Company, specifically Cascade, Eventide, and Company B.
The inside was very classy and grand with 5 stories of red velvet seating. A lot of room and nooks you can explore during intermissions.
The crowd was comprised mostly of elderly gentlemen and ladies, though there was a group of middle schoolers with presumably an inspired teacher. It was a good medium between opera formal and jeans and birkenstocks. The person who invited me is a patron of the dance company (ooh ahh) and had access to the VIP/patron area. I could've used a few more years and drinks to join that crowd.
I loved the performance itself. I don't go gaga over modern dance like my friend, but I can't deny how beautiful it was. The venue really enhanced the experience.
Bottomline: I recommend Lincoln Center to everyone! If you can afford 3D movie tickets in NYC, you can afford to go see a performance here. Multi-ticket discounts are also available. Really looking forward to returning next week to see a different PTDC performance!
This is such an amazing spot to watch some great performances and enjoy real culture. Â I was recently here for a fantastic opera and everything I experienced was great from the seating to the grand stage. Â The place is enormous and due to the layout, even not-so-great seats still have good views of the stage.
Watching a performance from Lincoln Center is definitely something that is part of the New York theater experience.
Gorgeous! I came here twice on my Winter Break in December 2012. I came here twice for: first, the NYC Ballet of the Nutcracker on 12/29/12, and the second for the Met Opera for Turandot 1/3/13.
I love this place, it's elegant, it's where art meets music meets the world!
Just a few months before, in April 2012, I was back here for the first time to see MACBETH. Since then, I was in love and couldn't get enough of the OPERAs.
I'm waiting to see Tosca, but I guess i'll have to settle watching TOSCA here in Los Angeles, Cali.
Lincoln Center may just be the most beautiful piece of real estate in NYC. Â It's fun just to walk around here and watch all the care and beautiful lights and people hustling to set up the latest event.
We came here on one occasion when we were still in college.  One of our friends found out that there was going to be a dressed rehearsal for John Williams as conductor to the NY Philharmonics for 27 dollars!  We walked in without even dressing up in the afternoon, who knew that manhattanites bring their gifted and talented kids to afternoon rehearsals  to train their tastes.
John Williams rocked it. Â The final segment of the performance was in illustrating what movies would be without the sound tracks, they played ET, Indiana Jones, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Star Wars with the volume off while the orchestra played in step with every scene.
This performance was the memory of a lifetime and Lincoln Center is an amazing venue which hosted it.
I love this place, it is so beautiful that I just like hanging out there. I love everything from the fountain to the big stages. It is modern but with a beautiful look into the classical and it is done in such a beautiful way that you can not but help feel special when you are there. What I like the best is the diversity of the place, there are movie theaters, stages for ballet, opera and classical performances and they even have tents outside for Fashion Week and much more... A lot of opportunities for people who likes performing arts.

The Lincoln Center is a beautiful venue reminding us the truth of that line.
The art displays are breath-taking and a wonderful treat to patrons. The ingenious performances, the lobby, the water front, the people, the champagne during intermission--everything about the presentation here supports the structure of your magical experience.
I came to see Tosca with a "blast from the past" date. It was such an enchanting moment that despite the cold, I couldn't help feeling the warmth of my heart glow.
I'm not a huge fan of Opera, but I saw a couple of shows here and they were entertaining. I liked the costumes and it seems louder than Carnegie Hall anyway (sorry, still a bit annoyed by that).
I also very much enjoyed intermission. Their lobby area is just gorgeous with the stairs and all, and it really helps such a long Opera go by when you have some champagne in between. Not that I don't like it, but it's so many hours long.
All in all, entertaining.
Okay hands down one of the best places to take pictures! lol. The ambiance from the outside to the inside is wonderful. Now, this is what NY is all about... amazing architecture and the sophistication of it all made me feel like a REAL ADULT. lol! My sister scored some awesome tickets for a classical music concert (sorry I don't remember who was playing) but it was a full house. I am soo happy she took me here and not clubbing my last weekend in NYC. haha... I never would have thought I'd enjoyed classical music that much but I DID, OH I DID! I wish I could come back....how I miss NY. The lights, the action, the people...(dreams).
The seats were a bit old but that's ok..we were like in the first 7 rows which was good cos we didn't have to break our necks looking up all the time. They had intermission for us and if you were late they'd close the doors on you. Which I don't think they did cos the restroom lines were long and by the time you got back the second half would have started already.
The ushers were ok, nothing too extraordinary.
Thumb up for the subway being accessible inside the center.
Wow! This is what New York City is all about! We had purchased tickets to watch War Horse and caught the subway to Lincoln Center. I never realized that Lincoln Center was more than just a single building, but in fact multiple art and education venues. (See Pinky And The B's review for a full list)
I am a HUGE fan of the arts so I could hang out here 24/7! There is a beautiful fountain in the middle of the center and people milling about in every direction. The day I visited Lincoln Center there was a large arts and craft festival. I'm not talking about handmade doilies either, but beautiful sculptures, clothing and other treasures. This place makes me want to move to NYC with my children so that they can enjoy and experience the arts in such an amazing setting!
Yelp 365 Challenge: #273/365 (The Arts Mecca)
The Lincoln Center is beyond impressive.
The fountain out front provided fabulous picture taking opportunities. Â It's nestled by the Julliard School and the ambiance on the Upper West side screams of culture. There was a short display last week paying tribute to a "Rock n Roll" exhibit I believe is available through sometime in August. Â Pictures of famous stars ranging from Stevie Ray Vaughn to Bruce to Prince and Rod Stewart. One photographer's captured time on display of famous rock moments. It's free and definitely worth the few min in the library to check it out. Â You will have to show security your bag content on the way OUT and not entering the library. Â
At night? Breathtaking. The lights, the fountain and the people after a show lets out is incredible. Â Be mindful of local restaurants/bars in the area post a show time. When it it rains it pours with people but it is truly one of my most favorite places/landmarks we've stayed in the city. Â Full of culture and breathtaking.
This is one of the reasons you wanna be a New Yorker - visitIng Lincoln Center for ballet, concert, opera and films!
No need to compliment the magnificent Met Opera hall and Avery Fisher music hall... Â the plaza, Dante park, and cafes, restaurants nearby all contribute to the unique cultural atmosphere of NYC. This is the New York I fall in love with - one can breath spritrual fresh air freely, and feel relaxed as well as the dynamics... You thought the shows are expensive? Wrong, just search their program online and arrive 1 hour before your favorite show, to get rush ticket at box office for $20 (very often we get best seats with rush ticket). Lincoln Center is a non-profit anyway.
Besides, highly recommend documentary film program at LC's Film Center, check out Human Rights Film Festival, you'll be impressed and inspired!
One of the most beautiful night views of NYC. I absolutely adore the gorgeous water fountain, especially when it's 90 degrees outside and you are just dying for something to cool you off. Sit by the water fountain and you'll find yourself lightly sprayed with water but instantly relaxed and cooled down. Plus you get a gorgeous and bright view of the area because the fountain is so central to the buildings around.
Ballet, opera, philharmonic, everything is worth seeing here. I've seen the Philharmonic twice and both times were an amazing experience that was both beautiful in audio and visual. Lincoln Center is absolutely clean, gorgeous, and extremely well organized. The staff are friendly and great at providing clear directions and support.
A few warnings:
1. If you are going to the women's bathroom during intermission or a break, RUN. Lines get RIDICULOUSLY long. There are two bathrooms on the second floor...always head for the one farthest down because many people are too lazy to make the trip a few more steps down even though there are less people waiting.
2. Eat and drink before you go. The reason this place is spotless is probably because they don't allow visitors to eat on the floor with seating. However, you can purchase drinks from small stands. Except the prices are ridiculous. Go for it if you want to splurge.
A performing arts venue that never seems to disappoint me each time I come here. I came to watch Hai Kyung Suh's piano recital tonight where all the proceeds will go towards Breast Cancer awareness which is definitely for a good cause which I am always up for. Lincoln Center is right next to Julliard, one of the most celebrated and the most competitive to get into Music schools in the country.
I think Lincoln Center is for the refined, cultured, and educated people and actually a place more for the locals than the tourists. The area (Upper 60s) is not over-loaded with tourists like Times Square which is good because I cannot stand crowds anymore and TS is just too dangerous. Overall, I had a wonderful time here and left feeling peaceful and happy :)
I brought my gf here to watch La Boheme and she really enjoyed it. Although the stage is really massive and grand, I was not really impressed and I felt kind a bored (sleepy shhhhh :-P). I was tired pfft. My gf was like... I like to watch another Opera again.... and again... and again.
So I bought Madama Butterfly tickets. Then I was really impressed. I was holding back my tears (haha) and then this dummy boy showed up and I was like "what the .....". Seriously, use a REAL BOY! Still, great performance.
I was also here to watch Swan Lake and I've seen better. The way they move their hands (the swan motion? lol) are not coordinated. I can't believe I'm reviewing this!
Ok, serious aside, Lincoln Center is world class. Every time my parents visit NY, they always go here as well. I just don't want to sound like bragging but I've been here many times and I think it deserves a good review.
Like so many other NY'ers I grew up going to and enjoying Lincoln Center's many, many features. Like Times Square, it's one of NYC's main cultural hubs. A truly world-class experience, day or night. Just like 10x better!
You have a multitude of options to chose from to actually get here. Whether it be Columbus Circle Station (see: <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/columbus-circle-subway-station-new-york#hrid:Bt504Wqy3985eUURt4recQ">http://www.yelp.com/biz/…</a>), the M66 Bus (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/m66-new-york#hrid:PjQD4Bi-L-zcifNx9W4A7g">http://www.yelp.com/biz/…</a>), Taxi or Limo. There's absolutely no excuse for you to say that you've never had the joy of experiencing this iconic area.
Recently undergoing significant modern renovations that started about 6 years ago, and are were completed recently, they've really brought Lincoln Center (and the surrounding area) into the modern century. Columbus Circle (see: <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/columbus-circle-new-york#hrid:TS6uwQVT5dC7Q_EDE_USrg">http://www.yelp.com/biz/…</a>) & Lincoln Center are now one. One step away for you to enjoy some of the best musical and artistic talent the world has to offer right here in NYC.
Which is wonderful, because the new renovations and redesigns link the modern Lincoln Center & Columbus Circle to the rest of the city. Whereas the old design/setup was geared more towards creating an Cultural Island Oasis, that ultimately cost it in exposure.
I mean every single angle of Lincoln Center, and the surrounding neighborhood offers options that will enrich your mind, body, and soul. All of which are topnotch in their respective fields. The Jazz Center, Lincoln Center's own Performance Center, the Opera, the world-renowned Julliard School, Tully Hall's iconic architecture...I could go on and on. They all bring it to another level, and then some!
=============Pro-Tip=================
Lincoln Center & nearby Columbus Circle both serve as PERFECT date night retreats. You literally would have to be a bumbling, incoherent, clueless fool to foul-up a date night that centers around these 2 linked areas.
So let those new lighted steps lead you to a wonderful way of expanding & enlightening your cultural horizons!
=============Pro-Tip=================
I always wanted to come here, and each time I have full of motivation and energy. I feel very inspired and joyful in this location. I always have good memory and meet great folks around here. Famous $100million upgrade really brings up that value. Â
Known by most musician, artist, and most everyone; they have beautiful performance and attract world best performer to here. Like everyone else, how can you go wrong but to come see it for yourself?
This review is based entirely for the Josie Robertson Plaza and Hearst Plaza.
Meetup on a Friday night for Martial Arts Trilogy free outdoor performance lead by Tan Dun immediately following also a free chamber orchestra outdoor band shell multimedia concert from music of three renowned Chinese films: Hero; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; and The Banquet. Both excellent performances depicting skill in the physical form of martial art of athleticism with usage of Chinese sword, spear, and knife fighting with the added unique highly skill of Chinese face changing. Music coincidence with clips from these three films to set the scene.
Facilities indoors are relatively clean, and foyer area for tickets, coat check have a warm lighting that is very inviting. Â Modern structure yet very simple and classic style that is beautiful in true New York fashion. Â N.B. Â Patrons must silence their mobile phones or any devices that produce a noise for both outdoor or indoor performances!! Â
Live performances where creative talent is for the sincerely appreciative and genuinely interested. Personally, I always enjoy live performances where passion of craft and skills of talent unfolds into reality to be sincerely appreciated. Â For tourists and New Yorkers you've got to go to the Lincoln--Lincoln Center!!
I've not had the fortune of attending a performance here, but I've had the pleasure of wandering the grounds. Â Lincoln Center is one of those iconic places, instantly recognizable, that gives you the tinglies when you walk up. Â
As you ascend the steps to the plaza, the slick, black marble fountain comes into view, its jets of water rising and falling. Â It's a beautiful sight. Â Looming behind it, larger than life, is the stately Metropolitan Opera House. Â We took a spin through its lobby, an impressive space punctuated by beautiful, sparkling crystal "Sputnik" chandeliers, then spent some time in the wonderful gift shop (I really do love a great gift shop...).
With the completion of the 65th Street project -- an architectural and landscape overhaul lasting from 2006 through 2010 -- the grounds of Lincoln Center are more pedestrian friendly and conducive to lingering awhile. Â A pretty sloped "park", or tract of grass, sits aside the Opera House and was populated by tourists, locals, and -- presumably -- Julliard students summering on campus.
Now that I've strolled the beautiful grounds and facilities at Lincoln Center, I feel compelled to come see a performance, and soon. Â Next trip to the City...
VERY BEAUTIFUL venue that I hope i get to go to a lot more since its within walking distance or a few stops on the subway from me. I like the grass area outside where we took the kids when I was volunteering to eat their lunch. There is also plenty of seating on chairs, by the fountain, and just great set up.
The hall itself is very nice and modern..the architecture was great and allowed for the place not to seem stuffy. The chairs were comfortable and during performances the ushers were really nice and patient with us. I like the artsy touches they had on the outside. The welcome in different languages on the stairs and on the north side the digital screens.
Outdoors at 8pm in NYC on 7/7, it was as hot as I imagine hell might be. Â But we went to the Lincoln Center for their "Midsummer Nights Swing" anyway. There was a live swing band and a DJ.
I am not kidding you when I say just standing still, I was standing in a pool of my own sweat. Yet there were people on the dancefloor, twirling, whirling, jumping, shaking, and jiving the night away. They must have been liquefying.
It was too hot. We left, without being asked to dance, in search of cooler quarters.
It looked like a nice concept. Lincoln Center is definitely a snazzy venue from the outside. I'll have to go back to see a show and upgrade my review.
A must see for anyone....especially as this is truly the center for the Arts for not only NY, but I think for the US. Â You have the Opera, Philharmonic, Ballet - and the list goes on and on and on. Â I would go check it out during the day - and then swing by at night before a performance, even if you don't have a ticket, to experience the entire plaza area. Â Amazing.
Julliard - The most famous arts school in the world. Â You have got to go and see Julliard just for the schools reputation - and to think about all of the many genius' it has helped refine. Â
There are tours you can take - so check it out on their website. Â I was there for an Opera, so walked around a bit myself and didn't take a tour.
The Met is one of the reasons why I love NY so much. It's a real blessing and privilege to have an easy access to such spectacular world class live opera performances!! The Met opera inspired me to study Italian more seriously so that I can actually understand what the opera singers are saying besides following Del Piero gossip news. Unlike the opulent Neo-Baroque style opera houses of Europe, the architecture of The Met is very modern and almost too simple for my taste. However, the stage set production was absolutely stunning, I particularly love the extravagant stage designed by the legendary designer Franco Zeffirelli. I admire his magnificent grandiosity, attention to detail, elegance and over-the-top glitziness!! His "Turandot" production is a must-see, and it's one of the most memorable operas I've ever seen in my life!!! 10 star!!!!
So far my favorite operas are:
1)Turandot - It's the best!!!!! So breathtaking!!!!! Marcello Giordani singing "Nessun Dorma" was priceless, it was so beautiful that it moved me to tears!
2)Aida - I saw it twice and this is just as amazing as Turandot in terms of the music, ornate stage set, and costumes. I highly recommend to splurge on this one....Get a "Dress Circle" seat at least!!! Expect some tear-jerking scenes!
3)Don Giovanni - Erwin Schrott is such a stunning barihunk!! Mmmm!!! He's the PERFECT cast for Don Giovanni! Rico suave, 100% mujeriego sinvergüenza! LOL!! Saw him twice!! I can't wait to see him again....come back to The Met soon!!!
4)Carmen- So fierce, so independent, so fearless, so sexy, so passionate, and so crazy!! I LOVE CARMEN!!!
5)Madama Butterfly - Avant-garde , innovative, and minimalistic  visual approach was so dramatic and powerful! I loved how they adopted the Japanese theater tradition without being so cliche and cheesy. So artistic!!
6)Die Zauberflöte -I saw this twice too, and I'm gonna see it yet again and again. This is the cutest opera!!! And the visual is so surreal and mesmerizing, Julie Taymor rocks!!!! Pa pa pa papagenaaaaa!
7)Thaïs - Renée Fleming was superb!! I saw this without not knowing much about Massenet's work but I was blown away. 5 star!!
8)La Traviata- Jonas Kaufmann and Angela Gheorghiu were both brillilant!!! They defy the stereotypes of opera singers - they aren't fat and are rather attractive. The glitzy Franco Zeffirelli production was in full swing again! So opulent and elaborate, this is so my kind of opera. Love it!
9)Le Nozze di Figaro - Soooo hysterical!! Love Mozart's sense of humor! And ofcourse, the music is so beautiful and catchy!!
10)Il Trovatore-Very dramatic music, I love the chorus part!
11)La Rondine - The real-life couple Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna did a phenomenal job! The charming and romantic Art Nouveau/Art-Deco stage really captured the glamour of the era. I loved Angela's ravishing period costume in Act 1, she looked like she came right out of the Klimt's painting!
12)Stiffelio - One of Verdi's less popular operas of scandalous subject about a married minister whose adulterous wife had an affair with a hot young lover. Â I was blown away by the dramatic soprano singer, Julianna Di Giacomo. What a stunning voice! Placido Domingo conducted the orchestra, which was interesting. Overall, Stiffelio was surprisingly good!
13)Simon Boccanegra - The 69-year old tenor Placido still rocks!! I love how he keeps challenging himself with new genre, his debut as a baritone was filled with dignity and warmth. Bravo!!
As you can see, Verdi, Puccini, and Mozart are my faves. Since I'm not an opera-connoisseur, I appreciate these three masters more because the melody is more understandable and catchy.
The ones I thought were OK:
1)Rigoletto-Too depressing and upsetting!! I used to love "Donna e Mobile" until I found out the context...the Duke is such a jerk!!! A total DB!! I appreciate the beauty of tragedy but this is too devastating!!
2)La Boheme - I just never found the story line intriguing, sorry! The music is fantastic, but not my favorite.
3)Adriana Lecouvreur - Placido Domingo sang with such elegance despite his age, and the production was great, but somehow I didn't find it very memorable. I don't know why.
4)Tosca - the new production was waaaay too minimalistic and boring. Took away the drama and grandeur too much. Bring back old school please!
Not my cup of tea:
1)Satyagraha - too avant-garde and too monotonous. I nearly fell asleep.
Make sure you buy the tickets early because almost every single opera is sold out. The Met is recession-proof!! I don't think I'm ready for 5 hour Wagner opera, but I'd like to expand my horizon eventually.
Tumultuous history notwithstanding, Lincoln Center is a fantastic place for the arts. It truly is. The architecture speaks for itself, and the renovations, however inconvenient, come out better (I don't know about bigger). I grew up with Lincoln Center as a New York City public school kid. The excellent music programs that I was exposed to since I was in elementary school have been sources of great memories. I have gotten great deals in seeing The Nutcracker, the Mostly Mozart concert series, the NY Philharmonic and the Julliard String Quartet. It was awesome to have Avery Fisher Hall as the setting of my high school graduation.
In many ways, Lincoln Center has always been a part of my life. Not as present as say, a student at the American Ballet Theater, but as someone who otherwise would not have seeked such pursuits.

Yup, it was a roaring good time for everyone who got to see the Nutcracker tonight! (In my case, I went with my mom and little sister.)
Lincoln Center is a great place to check out the latest ballets, operas, or other performing arts. Check online for ticket discounts. The best part of their facilities? Their staff is really efficient and can get you to your seats in a few minutes--perfect for folks a little tight on time!
4 stars for a great show and not needing strong drinks.
You will never regret to watch any ballet and opera here. The student rush ticket is very affordable.

Don't forget to see the NUTCRACKER during Christmas. I watched it last year. I would very like to watch it again. Really great!!!
I want to listen to the Lincoln Center Jazz at Time Warner Center when I get a chance.
