This is a classic example of an overrated hipster joint with bad service and mediocre food. If you want to waste your money and be part of a lame ass scene, this place is totally for you. The hostesses were nice and cute but our waitress was a stuck up biznatch. She acted like she was doing us a favor in taking our orders and practically rushed us out asking us if we wanted to see the dessert menu when we were not even done ordering food. It is a good thing that she did though, because it forced us to walk down the street and get some REAL food.
Review Source:Wow! Very nice place! Â Second time here. Â Oakland continues to surprise me with amazing restaurants hidden in random places. Â The atmosphere is great. Â Good lighting, good food, and most of all..(biggie for me).. amazing personal-feeling service !Yesenia, our perfectly attentive and genuine server put the fifth star on this review :) Â Helped us pick the perfect wine, available before you even know you need something, and didn't judge us for mixing shots of tequila and wine and desert.. Â It's the little things..
Review Source:my friend and i came to get a drink after our dance class at flying yoga shala. Â the inside was pretty quiet, and we sat at the bar. Â when i went to the bathroom, i realized there was a whole back patio that was packed! Â they have nice wine cocktails here and is a good place to catch up w/ an old friend!
Review Source:I've been to a few wine bars in my life , but I must say that Marc 49 is one of my favorites bar nun! Their menu use to be long and bulky now it has been simplified to perfection. With in amazing new menu & the finest of wines you can't lose! Oh and I can't forget to add that they have a decadent dessert menu. The bread pudding is to die for. Definitely stop by if you are in the Temescal district.
Review Source:This is a great place to stop in for a drink while you're waiting for a table at Burma Superstar....that's what we did last night.
The server that greeted us was very pleasant and seated us on the outdoor patio despite the disgruntled bartender that snidely told us "there's a 20% chance of rain so if you sit out there and it starts raining and there's no seating when you come back in...you know, sorry". Â WTF? Â
We made our way to the patio area anyways - it's really cute and the music selection was great (1920's/30s). Â The drink menu is extensive, though I'd recommend choosing a wine as we opted for cocktails that were just a little to sweet for us - but I suppose that's a matter of taste. Â
It was taco tuesday and we were honnnngry so we also ordered a fish and a chicken taco as well as some chips and guacamole. Â The taco was $2 so what was I expecting right? Â The meat was a bit questionable but I ate it anyways. Â The chips and guac were pretty good though.
All in all, I'd go back, but not for a meal, and definitely not if there is a 20% chance of rain. Â I'll be sure to keep my eye on the weather report to avoid the bartender's brash attitude.
Marc 49 is more of a cocktail bar than a tapas bar. Their (newer) menu is super small and heavy on the pork offerings. It could use some more veg finger foods other than crudités. One Yelper mentioned quesadillas; that would have been good.
One dish we had was pork rillettes with toast. The rillettes was served cold in a mason jar with a spoon for scooping it onto the toast--a little awkward. I would have opted for it to be served at room temp because the mixture was pretty solid. I'd also increase the quantity of toasts.
Another dish we tried was the grilled cheese panini and tomato soup. The soup was excellent. The sandwich, however, had very little cheese so it was kind of dry.
I'd say the setting is Marc 49's main selling point. The back patio is small but perfectly protected from the breeze by high fences. The indoor lounge looked awesome too. The Corpse Reviver #2 was a delicious concoction!
I really love Marc 49. It's a great place to meet up with friends after work or go for a date night. I recommend sitting at the bar, easily the best seats in the house thanks to their bartender. Comfortable and elegant environment, excellent cocktails, and friendly bartender who always has a great recommendation.
Their wines are a staple, with the Rock and Vine Cab being my favorite. The drink du jours are always fun, you can tell a lot of effort goes into these and I enjoying coming in to try them. In case you can't tell, I'm loving their extended bar program. Temescal needed a lounge-y classy bar and I think Marc 49 is the answer.
P.s. Can you say house made bitters and syrups? Because they did.
WOW! Love this place was asked a few times to go but never did, don't know why. Buried amongst a bunch of little shops in the heart of the Temescal District. The place is very trendy but cas, nice bar with amazing drink, vine and alcohol selection. Our Bartender was a gal named Stevie and she was very attentive with great suggestions and details to the specialty drinks (which if I remember there were like 30). We had had a not so good'a experience down the street for dinner so were ready for something tasty, the menu had some great and different for the norm fair. The guy next to use had oysters which looked great we had eggplant bruchetta and kale and smoked salmon salad WONDERFUL! And lots of kool good looking peeps to hang out with.
FurSur will be back again and again.
I love this bar. Â I love to go right after work on a Thursday from 5-6:30 because there is no crowd. Â I am not a beer or wine drinker so I appreciate the thought and time put into an interesting cocktail. Â My go to is pretty much always the Lemon Drop but look for the special of the day on the board. Â As I said, I like going when there is no crowd, I can take up two spaces at the bar or a table for 4 near the front window and just let go of my day. Â Alone or chatty with a friend, it's a great wind down for drinks and apps before moving on to dinner or heading home.
Temescal is a hot location to be in right now. Â I only hope it get's better and better.
We sat outside on the heated patio. Â The food is delicious and atmosphere is great. Â They have a unique menu with a selection of bruschetta, sliders, paninis and salads.
We shared the carmelized onion and goat cheese bruschetta, and two kinds of sliders - bbq and classic. Â The waitress recommended a gin-based floral cocktail that was outstanding, but I can't seem to remember the name (or find on their online menu).
The pricing is very reasonable. Â Bruschetta was $7 that included 3 pieces and sliders were $8/$9 that included two sliders. Â Plenty for dinner.
I am definitely going back!
So the group and I definitely came here for their Wednesday $1 oyster deal! Â And what we found were good drinks and a good time!
We came in pretty late, 930pm to be exact, it wasn't too crowded, but we didn't want to sit outside, so we sat at the bar. Â Sitting at the bar is always fun, the bartenders there were totally awesome - very friendly and warm - and watching the drinks being made is fun as well. Â And speaking of drinks, I believe I had the Russian Mule (?), which came in a neat copper or tin cup, and was delicious (not the strongest, mind you, but tasty). Â But the other drinks those in my group got had a satisfying amount of alcohol and were just as tasty. OH! Something I found to be really neat. Â They give you a small glass of bacon as an appetizer here! I found that so hilarious and cool at the same time! Â The oysters were tasty as well, they tasted fresh and the $1 price tag just made everything a lot nicer. Â But I also noticed their other happy hour items, next time!
As mentioned before, the indoor was a bit small, but very cozy and intimate. Â Definitely a nice place to chill with friends and I will definitely be back for the happy hour deals!
This is one of Oakland many hidden gems, a great place for a a casual first date or just to grab a few drinks with friends. They have a large selections of wines, beers and cocktails. The beers are primarily craft and the liquor is as well which makes for a good night. They also serve food which is excellent and goes perfectly with the great selection of drinks. I also overheard that there menu will be going under  a revamp very soon ( even though I think its just fine as is) which will make the place a one stop shop in terms of having a meal and drinks. The service is attentive and genuine, and each server knows what they are talking about when it comes to wine, beer and cocktails. They have a FANTASTIC outdoor patio which I think would be great to rent for a private event, actually I am considering renting the entire venue for my upcoming company event, its a perfect fit!
Overall a breathe of fresh air located in a rapidly growing area. Check it out if you haven't and be sure to sign up for a there mailing list, they give you a $10 coupon just for doing so!
Just had my friend's baby shower here and had the most amazing time. Â I worked with Meryem on the planning and the day of, she was so easy to work and extremely professional. Â We used the outdoor space and the patio was perfect!!!! They also have heating lamps if it gets chilly. I would highly recommend using this space for an event. Â Super cute place with amazing staff!
Review Source:You know, I had high hopes for this place, as did my husband. We both love tapas, and maybe we're a little picky due to our international upbringing, but I have to say, this place really failed us in terms of taste. Too safe. Not enough seasoning or spice. However, almost worse than that was the overwhelming odor of Lysol upon entering, which wafted even to the outdoor patio where we'd gone to escape the smell. Enough to give a person a headache! But to be brutally honest, we may have returned for a second chance had the bar manager that evening not seemed so, well, for lack of a better way of describing it, "coked out." I could be completely wrong, but both my husband and I were really turned off by his non-stop chatter and stream-of-consciousness type rambling, which got only more and more hyped as the night wore on. There are surely better tapas places to visit that won't turn us off as much as this visit did due to all the above, so unfortunately, that was to be our only time there. Other than that, the service was great.
Review Source:Snob alert: I avoided this place for the longest time because their sign was in Brush Script--a typeface I hate at least ten times more than Comic Sans. I would walk past it and think: That place looks like a cheesy wine house for yuppies and college girls with big hair.
Boy, was I wrong! Lesson learned. You should never judge a bar by its signage, because they might serve complimentary bacon inside.
PROTIP: Make a reservation.
I  like to see nicer places like Marc pop up in Oakland . Theres a lot of people who just get tired of travelling to the city every weekend to have a night out . The décor is nice , the crowd had a good vibe , and there's a healthy sized menu with some great and not as great dishes. Marc sliders , Bruschetta plate , and bbq /bacon Panini's.....done . As for the bar , they knocked one star off of my rating because of the rating . I realize people like the mixology show , but just slide a beer to me and put it on the tab.  There are 3 areas for seating including the patio for those summer nights.  All in all , great loungie place for drinks and eats after most restaurants are closed for the night . ::HANDLE::
Review Source:Went here after work to have happy hour in the back patio. It was really quiet when we arrived at 5 pm but the patio filled up quickly before 6pm.
We ordered the veggie quesadilla and spinach slider to share and I had both the red and white sangria ($6). The food was pretty good but beware vegetarians, the spinach slider is misleading. It is actually a mini beef burger with spinach and feta.
All of the drinks were really good and their glasses are huge. Overall it was a great deal for happy hour and their veggie quesadilla is really tasty (shoutout to the portobello mushrooms).
Heard they have a wild taco Tuesday and dollar oyster Wednesday. Will come back for those.
I also came here for a club banquet so we got the back to ourselves. The patio's all heated but it was way too hot and I couldn't avoid it because everyone else was complaining it was cold. The food was decent.
Food Highlights:
+ Vegetarian? Wouldn't know because I'm not vegetarian.
+ Bruschetta? Too many options? Not worth getting.
+ Your sandwich comes with a side salad. I got Caesar and it was ok.
+ I tried 4 different desserts and my favorite was the cheesecake. Nothing really special, but it's cheesecake!
Bonus Points:
+ Waitress cool with my joking around. I approve.
+ Only one bathroom but it's clean.
+ The back patio is nice but the wood floor panels are not! My friend dropped a twenty and it slid through the cracks. We asked the waiters what's up and they were like "oh yeah that happens. if it makes you feel any better there's a bunch of credit cards under there too". Not sure that made her feel any better so now she has plans to starve for two days to make up for the cost.
I loved the vibe so I'll be back for a more casual groovy time.
Marc is French for pomace, the grape pulp leftover when making wine, and 49 is for 49th street.
Came here for a club banquet so we got the back patio all to ourselves muahahaha. The patio's all heated but I think I sat in the wrong place because i was pretty consistently cold. The food was delicious!
Food Highlights:
+ Vegetarian? Berkeley vs Oakland Panini? Go for the Oakland. That pesto sauce makes all the difference. (Hi, nice to meet you! I'm vegetarian.)
+ Bruschetta? Too many options? I love goat cheese. Get the goat cheese and caramelized onions.
+ Your panini comes with a side salad that isn't some crappy garden/caesar salad! I love strawberries so I loved the Strawberry Fields.
+ I tried 4 different desserts and my favorite was the lemon. Served in a champagne flute and super light to cut through the grease of the meal.
Bonus Points:
+ Waitress complimented me on my new wedges!!! I'm too excited about this.
+ Only one bathroom but it's clean.

PS did you know Marc 49 is on 49th street? har har har. parking's still terrible.
I always run with my dog in the mornings and pass Marc 49. Going out on a first date, I wanted to stay close to home so I chose Marc 49 and it was FANTASTIC. Great service, great patio, great food and my date and I had an awesome time with his and hers white and red sangrias on Sangria Sunday! Will be back!
Review Source:I would place Marc 49 square in the 3.5 range, but am rounding up due to nice service.
Marc 49 is a smallish place, but fun for a date or even a small a group. Â There were all different kinds in attendance: Â after work meetings, date nights, and even a family with a baby when we visited. Â
Food was good but not great. Â Sliders were probably the best part. Â Cheese and meat tray was nothing spectacular. Â Desserts were a bit of a miss. Â Not terrible, just not really worthy of the calories and carbs I was indulging in.
Nice drinks with some new concoctions.
Recommend sitting outside if there is room.
The service is always phenomenal. They're friendly, warm, and inviting. It always feels like I'm visiting a neighbor's home.
Wine flight is crazy affordable. It's like, what, $14 for 4 2oz pours? That's a full cup of wine. That's a lot of (good to great!) wine for a little gal like me.
The back patio is possibly the cutest thing I've ever seen in an urban environment. I love the wood finishes, and the design is so clean yet welcoming. It's contemporary but warm and cozy (literally - the heat lamps will keep you toasty!)
The food comes out in respectable servings. Meaning: You can actually get full off one plate...and these are supposed to be "small" plates! But, of course, you are more than welcome to gorge yourself on multiple little plates. Go ahead. Have another sip... and another bite... and another....
My advice: Come here now. Make yourself comfortable on the patio. Start with the ceviche and make your way to the BBQ sliders. Wash it all down with copious amounts of sangria. Enjoy watching the stars emerge above you on a clear summer's night. You're welcome.
It's been a while since I was at Marc 49, and although I can't really remember all the details what has stuck with me were the delicious bruschetta and the joy of playing Jenga in a wine bar.
This was a fun place to go for a night with a friend (I think a large group might be a bit difficult) to hang out and play some games while drinking yummy sangria and eating some finger foods.
Excellent deal, especially if they are still honoring their Yelp Check-In offer!
My friends and I came here at an odd time so it was pretty dead here. We were seated at the cozy patio area with heaters above us (they weren't roasting us alive either). I was feeling something fruity so I ordered the red sangria. Yummy! Not too many pieces of fruit overwhelming the appearance of the delicious drink. The drink prices are a bit on the higher end but at least the drinks are strong. We also ordered the Rock & Roll, which allows you to pick your choice of 4 types of bruschetta on their menu. They've got some interesting selection of food but I was more impressed with their drinks. The service is excellent: our waitress came by often to check up on us. Always a plus in my book. You can also find better parking on Shattuck. Avoid Telegraph, don't even try.
Review Source:This is an update to a 2 star review I posted in March.
After that review, the business owner emailed me and was genuinely concerned about the lack of service. He asked me to return to and give them another chance.
I did so, but without letting him know I was coming. However, the team recognized me (from my profile?) and came right over, followed soon after by the owner. The apology for the previous lack of service was sincere and much appreciated. The evening was perfect after that.
It is refreshing to know that my concerns were not ignored. Mistakes do happen, and it is a great testament to Marc 49 that they wanted to correct them.
p.s The panninis are still awesome!
This is a great place if you want good full bar, with great knowledgeable bartender who make great drinks, for all occasions just for you. They serve great food, that is very tasty and very filling. You can also pair with a wide range of wines. I recommend the red or white wine flights to find the one you will love. This truly one of the hidden places in Oakland to go to. With a great stuff that will make you feel well come and truly will have you wanting to come back. Thrust me give them a try you will not regret it.
Review Source:Great low key Taco Tuesday spot. Dollar Oysters on Wednesdays. Forget peanuts, this place has bacon as a bar snack!
Quality draft and bottle selection for beers, some decent sangria, full bar with reasonable prices.
Other reviewers have complained about the service, I have not had a problem. It's never been packed when we've gone there either though...
Also the back patio is awesome! Heated lamps that kept us toasty in the middle of January.
Um no. When oh when will this "Mixologist" trend die? I just want my drink already.
Waited 20 minutes at the bar (with no acknowledgement by said bartender to my existence) to order a drink, while he made 3 (yes I said 3) drinks during this timeframe. A pinch of this, a dash of that, with an essence of burned orange peel (yes, watched him burn the orange peel), a stir, a shake, a taste, and on and on. Now I understand waiting a bit when the bar is full, but the place was barely half-full.
In general, found this place (and bartender) to be pretentious and hipster trendy. Plus, some truly awful art on the walls. And drinks were expensive!
There's a lot better places, with true character around town-- wish this place was one of them!
Where do you go for a double date night when your husband wants good drinks and a big menu and you want somewhere with a nice ambiance, yet affordable? MARC49!
PROS:
-Nice "lounge-y" feel, both our husbands really liked the decor.
-Affordable, good value
-LARGE MENU, good food, the paninis and sliders were amazing (highly recommend the Marc" sliders - so good! As well as the bbq & bacon panini because well, bacon.)
-Good vegetarian options (love the vegetarian quesadilla)
-Good service, our waitress was very attentive.
-Quiet. Unlike a bar, you can actually hear what others are saying without shouting directly into their face with your stinky breath.
-Decent portions (for both food and drink)
-Free glass of wine (value $7) when you check in on Yelp...minimum $20 order :)
CONS:
-If you are over 6 ft, you may feel like an absolute GIANT in the lounge seats as both the tables and chairs are lower to the ground. Both of our significant others were 6'2+, good times.
-Street parking
Highly recommended, definitely want to come back!
I came in right at opening (5pm) on Friday to meet someone for a glass of wine. The bartender was beyond hipster but surprisingly super friendly and helpful. The first thing I noticed were the glasses of crispy bacon in bar glasses, intended for snacking with a drink. Free bacon? I'm in :)
The cocktail menu wittily divides drinks into "imagined" and "forgotten," all of which seemed really inventive and thought-out. We chose red instead, going with a 2010 Jaffelin Borgogne, France ($12/glass) which was started a little sharp for me but definitely got better as it breathed. The pour was very generous and the service was attentive.
I was sure I didn't need dinner since i had other plans but we wanted something small to go with the wine. However, I couldn't bring myself to order any of their happy hour snacks since they were ceviche, hummus, quesadillas and other odd complements to wine. As I now look over the menu, I realize I should have tried something from the clever bruschetta list but I'll just have to go back for that :)
The place is really swanky, candles and low light, a heated outdoor patio that they enclosed in beautiful wood and twinkle lights. The tables are far to low for their own good but do make you feel sexier than you are for some reason. It got a little loud by about 7 but nothing excessive. I'm glad to know a good wine bar where the staff isn't pretentious and I can eat bacon to my hearts content!
1st time to Oakland in 15years. Can't belive i've never been & this is the first placei stop at.
Adorable interior. We opted to sit outside in the heated patio. Great service.
Good menu. I loved my shrimp ceviche. Very vegeterian friendly. Salads are pretty good. will go back for sure!
Stopped in here since I work relatively close and was looking to have a nice night out with the girlfriend. We were seated as soon as we walked in, since we got there a little earlier than most.
I ordered the red wine flight, while the girlfriend ordered the white. Both wine flights were outstanding, and I kept the names of a couple bottles that I'll need to pick up in the future. Both flights were very reasonably priced and the pours were definitely generous :)
Now on to my favorite part. I thought the highlight of the place would be the wine, but I was absolutely blown away by the food. We were planning on eating dinner elsewhere after starting here, but after the bruschetta, we were hooked and never left. We ended up having two different types of bruschetta, as well as a quesadilla and pita and hummus. Everything blew us away. As in actually had us stuffing our faces, politely of course. I'd recommend the Jazz Bruschetta to anyone, and need to go back soon to get my fix.
As for the ambiance of the place, the decor was friendly and pleasant. It was also easy to talk to each other since the noise level stayed pretty even keeled unlike other places. The service was top notch and we never waited on anything to get out to us. It was also interesting to learn about the art on the walls and it felt like a great local find. I'll be back asap as the girlfriend had an amazing time and that's the important part, right? :)
This place is awesome!!!! Great ambiance and feel. Â People are nice and its a great place to go to with a group of friends to hang out. Â Food is awesome and especially if you are a vegetarian. Â I would recommend the veggie or tofu sliders for sure. Â
If you like wine there is a huge variety of all sorts that'll appease your likings. Â
Been here a couple of times and for sure when ever I am in the area i'll be stopping by... Friday's and Saturday nights are a blast too... sometimes I go there just to get Buck!
First thing you will notice is the ambiance! The lighting is intimate. The sitting area is plush and cozy. The candles on the table set the mood for a nice intimate conversation or just chopping it up with close friends. I highly recommend this spot for a first date. You don't have to commit to a full dinner, just a drink and maybe some appetizers or a panini. If you get the 'emergency' text, it would be much easier to close the tab and bail! The walls are decorated with some interesting photographs from what look like the 40's and 50's but I could be incorrect. Moving on...
The waiter was very cordial. His tone was friendly and welcoming. Once he sat us down, he was very attentive and friendly.
Now for the food and drinks, pretty frickin' good! The red sangria was sweet and actually had a different flavor that I could not quite figure out but overall, it was smooth and very flavorful! The only thing not to expect is a buzz! You would have to consume at least 4 of those before you even feel a slight buzz, well at least I would.
The panini's we had were the Telegraph and Shattuck. I had never been to Marc 49, so I found the names of the paninis interesting and quirky.
I had the Shattuck which consisted of flank steak, roasted garlic, and red bell peppers. The bread was crunchy, the steak was tender and the veggies were well roasted and very tasty.
I love their outside seating area!
I really have nothing negative to say about the place.
Absolutely loved this place!! They have happy hour until 7pm on weekdays! Great wine and their Bruschetta was delicious. Â Also had their cheese and fruit plate which was deeeelish. Â They have a long list of Paninis on the menu. Â Our waitress was very nice which made everything even better!
They have a adorable outdoor patio, so make sure you sit out there if you go on a nice day!
Loved this place! Will definitely be going back very soon!
I am always looking for cool spots to hang out or take a date to, and this place takes care of both. Â
The bar area has a great atmosphere, but I really liked the outdoor patio. Â It isn't just a back concrete area with some chairs, it is an actual wooden patio that is a perfect spot to hang out.
The food was impressive. Â It is your usual bites that you would normally get at a wine bar, paninis, cheese plates, salads, etc. Â I ordered the chicken quesadilla, one of the paninis, and the bacon sliders. Â I pretty much ate most of the food and wanted more! The spinach tortilla for the quesadilla was unique and tasty. Â The panini was nice and crisp and everything went together well. Â The bacon sliders were my favorite! Â I must have had at least three of them (I was there for a few hours and quite buzzed).
Definitely a spot that I will go back to, and one that I recommend to all my friends.
