We were in town for the Nyack Art and Craft Festival and needed a break from the heat and some lunch. Â We decided to try Mojo and it was a great choice. Â The AC was cranked up and they have these cold strips in the middle of the tables to keep drinks cold- seems kind of brilliant. Â There wasn't anyone there but it was also around noon on a Sunday. Â We had the Mac'N'Cheese with bacon which was the best mac'n'cheese I've had in a while. Â We also had the blackened chicken sliders which were very good. Â I don't know that we got a good sense of the atmosphere of Mojo since we were there at noon during a busy street festival-- it seems like a sports bar-after work type of place but we enjoyed it very much.
Review Source:This place sucks! If I could give it less then one star I would. I have never left a review for anything but after both experiences here, I felt compelled. The employees are horrible. There is one bouncer in particular that ruins the entire place. Glasses and food wear was all very very dirty. It is a shame because I am a regular at the owners other establishment and my two experiences here make me not want to go there either. Others who I have spoke with have had the same experiences.. I doubt the place will make it
Review Source:I can confirm a few things from other reviewers, as well as add my 2 cents on Mojo, since I have been there 3 or 4 times now.
Pros
1) DELICIOUS small plates. Â My favorite is the mac n cheese with bacon, craving it right now... Â I've also had good salads here, and a friend I was with last time enjoyed the crab cakes. Â Nothing too big and heavy, just delicious comfort food with a sophisticated twist. Â
2) My friends and I all love the awesome "ice strips" that run the length of the bar and on most larger booth-type tables toward the back! Â Basically they are like metal rivers that are frosted over, allowing you to put your beer on them after each sip and never have to waste that last 1/4 of your beer due to it getting warm. Â Wouldn't do much if you get a drink in a stem glass, but still a fun extra that you won't find anywhere else in Nyack.
3) Mojo attracts an older crowd compared to other places in Nyack, but still doesn't feel as stuffy or vibeless as OVI or some of the other dives. Â
They have a 25+ rule after 10pm, but I've found them to be a little lax on this.
4) Casual enough to sit and talk with friends, until 10pm, then it gets loud- but it's not unbearable. Â It doesn't turn into an all-out dance floor like Pour House, Black Bear, Bourbon, etc. It does get really loud, though, and conversations become a little difficult if you're by the back bar, but again not unbearable.
5) NO TEENAGERS! Â YAY! Â (I'm saying that as a 24 year old: a few times now I've met underage girls in the bathroom at other bars in Nyack, and those are just the ones who willingly admitted it to me without me asking...)
Cons
1) Staff is kinda rude. Â Not rude enough to make me deduct more than a star, but they're not the best. Â For me, the food, ice strips, and laid back atmosphere makes up for it, but if you want to be waited on head to toe or build lasting relationships with the staff, don't expect to find it here.
2) Price. Â Sure, it can get pricey if you order two dishes of food and want to drink there all night...
3) Weird lounge on the second floor. Â You can't get up there without being part of the VIP party or are invited, so you can't make DJ requests unless the bouncer is being nice and lets you up. Â I think it would be fun to have a party up there some time but I bet it's expensive. Â Feels out of place with the downstairs, but you won't notice it's there unless you go looking for the DJ or want to go up the stairs.
Overall Comments
Perfect after work or weekend hangout: it doesn't get unbearably loud like Pour House or Black Bear until after 10pm, so you can go there for a more relaxed dinner with (mid 20s+ friends).
Been to Mojo twice now with some friends... both times we grabbed a nice high-top table with an ice rail in the middle. Didn't eat the first time, but the second time we shared the guacamole and the fried potatoes. Both were great to pick on while we were drinking! I will definitely go back to try some of the more creative menu choices I saw. Plus, I really really like the 25 and over policy! I'm tired of being packed in like sardines with a bunch of teenagers at some of the other places on the block... Nothing really negative to report... (except that I really miss the Chef's Salad from Reality Bites!)
Review Source:The positive: Â
Nyack needed to keep a tapas place and I'm glad they did. I'm glad to see someone has a small plate menu available; which I thought was an improvement from Reality Bites quality. Â Pricey, yes; but with small plates you don't really get inexpensive. Â Bars know they can rake you on the price with these. Plenty of the staff was attentive, unfortunately for us it was never our server. Â The rumor going up and down the street from every bar owner was that The Pour House ran Reality Bites out of their place pretty much saying "they had live music and it was too noisy". Right. I'm just glad there weren't any 18 year olds there like other bars.
Negatives:
When asked what beers are on tap besides what's on the list, "I don't know, some Sam Adams I think". Â I asked this as a trick question knowing there were 12 beers not on the list; some Sam Adams covered 2 of the 12. I followed that up with what would you suggest to eat? "I don't know, I've never eaten the food here". Â Right.....you shouldn't be out on the floor than. Â Lie to me, just don't tell me you've never eaten there. The music was good til 10:20 on the dot when it became just another dance club sadly. Â On the bright side, the lovely girl of scottish decent warned us that Lady GAGA was inevitable as the night progressed. Â
All said and done, I enjoyed my time. Â Just once we'd like to see something different then what is provided to us in Nyack at every other bar, this was about 90% the way there at least.
First time in Mojo last night. Was a little unwelcoming to start with but warmed up. I must agree with previous reviews that the staff are not particularly attentive. I do not expect to have to ask the waitress to bring me another beer when she has just put food down in front of me and can see I have an empty glass. Beers are a little pricey at $5-$8 when you can get two for that rice at Bourbon Street. The decor is good and the bar has a nice vibe if the staff are actually attentive to you. There is a very nice and intimate "lounge" area on the second floor where they do bottle service, would be nice for a private party I would expect.
The tapas is certainly overpriced and although quite tasty it is far from "unique" in my opinion.
Of course it has the obligatory 18 TVs all of which showing various sporting fixtures. This is a shame because Nyack certainly does NOT need another cliched wannabe sports bar with 18 TV showing sports. It need a grown up, establishment with some class.
The Saturday night DJ started with 45 minutes of great funk, soul, 70's, disco and old school and the crowd were really into it. Really gave the place a sense of grown-up class; a nice accompaniment to the over 25 door policy. Unfortunately at 45 minutes on the dot he jumped straight to the cess-pitt of vacuous, noisome, current chart noise. We left. We can get that at The Pour House and Vertigo.
I strongly urge the owner to  work out what Mojo wants to be, nail it down and stick with it. And hopefully not choose to be another generic over priced sports bar.
This place would do well to gear towards, jazz, blue, fuck, soul and have Discovery Channel and TMC films on various TVs
Bottle service? Uptight doormen in bad suits eyeballing you at the door? Yet another poor suburban attempt at being urban. If you want to be a baller, get into your car and head down the West Side Highway. Stop pretending to be a Mercedes Benz when you are in fact a Volkswagen. Heavy on cheese and light on substance.
Review Source:Finally! A touch of class in Nyack! I Met up with a group of friends for drinks: we ended up trying almost one of everything on the menu. the food was delicious and unique. The beer selection was diapointing, so I opted for one of their signature cocktails "the painkiller" and it was AWESOME. My waitress was on point and sexy. There were no kids running around and the vibe was great. Â 25 and over to get in at night. Couldn't ask for a better place to hang out. I will be back this weekend.
Review Source:There's and old saying: You never get a second chance to make a first impression. Unfortunately Mojo made a terrible first impression.
In the dining industry one of your priorities is to make your guests feel welcomed. This place feel very short of that. We walked in and found the hostess stand empty. We waited to be acknowledged. The bartender made eye contact with me, but didn't say a word. We waited a few more minutes, still no acknowledgement of our presence. There were two serves standing at the end of the bar chatting away, and didn't even notice us. You would think a new restaurant which was empty would be tripping all over themselves get our business. Â We decided to take our business elsewhere. Â Heaven knows there isn't a shortage of bars and lounges in downtown Nyack.
Was rather disappointed by the beer selection here. Lots of taps but almost all light beer. Was really looking forward to having a good craft beer bar in Nyack but guess I'm stuck with Michelob ultra. The decor is stellar though and the food was good. Not sure what late night is like though I am definitely going to go back.
