Advance caveat: we stopped in for drinks only, not food, just last night. Â I've eaten here numerous times before and had decent to good food, but it's been a few years, so again, this review is a snippet from a Friday night with my wife and another couple. Â
(I'm revising the rating to a final 2 stars, as I've visited the place a dozen times; however, this rating would absolutely be a 1-star if based only on below experience).
Nicholson's last night, in terms of cleanliness, quality and speed of service (and having to endure drunk morons at the bar), was horrible . Â We arrived at 9PM; the place was an absolute mess in the bar area, and the bar staff was doing NOTHING TO CLEAN THEIR TABLES. Â Worst part of all: we were 4 people out of a grand total of 8 who were at the bar-top tables, so it was virtually empty. Â However, we still had to search for a table ourselves (no host anywhere in sight and no one thought to step in and "act the part" as we're wandering the bar area in circles looking for a clean table). Â
We eventually did find (on our own) the one and only single clean bar table, out of about 7 or 8, only one of which was occupied. Â
So there we sat ungreeted, for 10 minutes or so, on a Friday night.... Â The service sucked, it took 15 minutes to get our drinks. Â 2 guys were so drunk and obnoxious at the bar, that I felt on the verge of playing bouncer as one of them was loud, insulting, and out of control with a patron. Â Do I even have to say that no one from behind the bar or any manager was monitoring the situation....
Final note: although I know the food can be first-rate at this restaurant, and the interior design is inspired (wall to wall beautiful woodwork plus awesome ceiling trusses with ornate turnbuckling), it's going to be a long time before Nicholson's sees this foursome again. Â I can find better-managed downtown bars where the Friday night staff actually cares about their place of business, and their clients.
Lastly, although I don't drink scotch whiskey (prefer American bourbons), I would be remiss not to mention that their scotch selection is truly incomparable, world-class.
Epic fail for brunch. Just had Easter Brunch here and it was surely a fail on many levels. Â I have been here before with friends during a pub crawl (delicious fried pickles)...and once for late night snacks..(amazing lobster mac&cheese)...but it is not a brunch destination. Â
Our waitress took our water/coffee order but took forever to get out bloody Mary order...as in we finally received our custom bloody Mary's AFTER our meal had arrived. Â They were pretty spicy...and it was probably the only time I didn't finish a cocktail! Oh and I can handle spice (order my Indian take-out at a level 9). Â Two of us ordered the "farmer's market omelettes...which had onion and artichokes...they were drenched in cream fraiche...came with duck fat fries..that were also drenched in the dripping cream fraiche from the omelette. Not good. I ordered a side of their housemade goetta and it looked like dog food..it was grey and barely heated through. Â I returned that without a bite and the waitress did take it off my check. Â I prefer my goetta crispy...but at least heated through. There are many other viable options for brunch and this establishment is not one.
Wow, what a wonderful experience at Nicholson's. We braved a packed house just for dessert and coffee before seeing Jersey Boys at the Aronoff.
The hostess was wonderful, bringing out a table and setting us up at the King chairs next to the hostess station. We enjoyed two scrumptious desserts with coffee before heading across the street for a really fun show.
Dessert was great and the staff was amazing!
Five stars. I use as sparingly as fats and oils. At least I've been trying to, as of late (stars and fats). But for this review in partic? I did not stutter.
NYE dinner--- made my reservations with such ease via Open Table via Yelp. Most of the restaurants near Fountain Square were booked, but I took it as a sign. Nicholson's had me at duck...fat...fries. What better way to bring on the new year than with a basket of duck...fat...fries?
WHY FIVE?
-called me the day before to confirm my reservation- uber friendly message left on my voicemail that got me cheerful for no reason
-upon arrival, got a welcome / thank you card specifically addressed to me from the owner/manager thanking me for choosing Nicholson's. Felt a whole lot like VIP! My friend was pretty impressed
-awesome waiter, Christian, made sure I got the burger of my dreams by letting me know about the "Chef's burger" aka: bison burger with pork belly and fried egg
-duck...fat...fries. I even got my friend to try/love them after her little "ew" comment when I first told her about them
-their ketchup? something about their ketchup. is it marinara? or homemade ketchup? it made the fries that much more amazing
-GREAT cover band playing that night
-intimate ambiance with tastefully sophisticated, rustic decor
I shall return when I visit Cincy again.
Bodenstein is raising the quality of food here. Â Duck fat fries. Â Need I say more? Â There is enough variety on the menu to please most, and the beer selection is quite expansive. Â I am still wishing for more in the stout / porter realm however. Â I'm not sure this is a destination pub for me, but for a casual snack and drink, it fits the bill.
Review Source:I ate here last week for a private party.  The staff was exceptionally friendly and on top  of the never-ending drink orders.  I had the pork chop and it was really good.  I heard mixed reviews on the fish and chips, but sometimes with large parties it's hard to keep everything as delicious. The ambiance was also great.  I would definitely come back here!
Review Source:12:16pm in the afternoon, 5 people at the bar (including me). 12:28pm I finally got a lunch menu, which I politely requested 10min earlier. My order came out in a timely manner. I'm by far a very patient individual... BUT it doesn't explain why it took 12 minutes to get a lunch menu. The burger I got was out-freakin'-standing! However, I'm not a big fat of the Duck Fat Fries... I feel asleep at the wheel on the way home... lol
Review Source:I've passed this place hundreds of times but figured it's just Brit kitsch. I hate kitsch.
But I was wrong. At least as far as the bar is concerned. I'm not a beer drinker but they had some nice cocktails on their menu and - glory be - they were not predominately vodka based.
My wife had a Blood & Sand which we love but rarely see on a menu. It was nice.
I had a flight of 12, 18 and 21 year old Glenlivett. I'm not a great Scotch drinker. In fact, although of Scottish heritage I'm almost anti-Scottish. I can't stand golf, bag pipes make me run and I'm not fan of Scotch. But when in Rome.
The bartender wasn't some twinkie hired for her good looks. She knew what she was doing and did it well. The other bartended checked in on us two.
Best of all, the crowd was more adult. When we were there it leaned young, except for the middle-aged drunk guy next to me. But they were young adult. Not the 'wear-a-ball-cap-everywhere' crowd that considers dressing up pulling out their best Bengals/UK/Reds jersey. Also not the Main St/Vine St. These were young people with a bit of taste...and jobs. It was nice.
We'll be back.
Out of all the restaurants in Cincinnati I could've chosen to eat at, I'm glad this is the one we picked. I was a little hesitant at first; it's more of a pub than a restaurant at first glance, and I always worry that places like this let the food quality suffer because of their focus on the alcoholic aspect of the establishment. But I'm happy I gave it a shot anyway.
The place just looks pricey, the inside has a very elegant decor and even the clientele were upscale in appearance! The food is just as pricey as the place appears, but the food is well worth it. I got a fantastic steak meal, everything was cooked perfectly and looked fantastic. Service was phenomenal, even as busy as it was after a Bengals game. Our server was attentive and quick. The selection of beer, wine, scotches was extremely impressive; I tried a lager I can't remember the name of, but it was the best I've had in recent experience.
There were TV's around so I was able to watch Percy Harvin help me lose in fantasy that week, which was just great. Heheh! I'd recommend this place to anyone in Cincy with some money to spend!
We decided to come to this place for our last dinner in Cincinnati because it had poutine. Â Though it was good, this was not the poutine I was expecting, and I think because of they brie cheese, the taste changes a lot from what one expects with traditional poutine. Â Our waiter was attentive, though as it got busier he came less and less often. Â We like all the drinks we got, and the waiter helped a lot with our choices. Â We ordered the beet salad and it came without any beets! Â When we pointed it out, the waiter brought us the beets, but the quantity wasn't much bigger than a thimbleful. Â Anyway, even with that, we had a great dinner. Â The place is huge! Â Side note: I'm surprised there's no baby changing station to be found in the ladies' room.
Review Source:Until they get new management, myself and the 24 other gentlemen I dine with are voting with our wallets and refusing to return. Â We used to meet there for lunch or dinner three times a month but about a year ago the service nose dived. Â
- We would be able to get in and out for lunch in 60-80 minutes then it became 90-120. Â
- We used to not get served cold food and have orders mixed up. Â
- We used to not have an issue with the bald gentleman at the bar who allegedly is a manager. Â
I would go in to details about his unwelcoming demeanor and borderline antagonism but that would be childish. Â You may track me down on facebook and ask for examples and I'll gladly provide them to you. Â
I really did love this place at one point. Â My wife and I had our first date there, I've had dozens of amazing conversations with friends there, I've got a bottle of Louis showcased in my library that I got from there.... Â The rest of the group thought I was being petty and blowing things out of proportion when I stopped going there with them - I would instead just set up the reservations and send my regrets. Â Finally after their experience there on September 6th, they urged me to find another venue for our gatherings. Â
Our presence likely won't be missed. Â All told it's only $3000-$4000 a month we're diverting away.
Please by all means, do not think that this place is a nationwide chain serving up Red Lobster quality food because you will miss out on the excellence that is Nicholson's Tavern & Pub.
I always avoided this place because of exactly that, I thought this was another chain smack dab in the middle of the city. How I found out differently was a surprising chef food demo at Japp's during Second Sunday. The chef of Nicholson's was there as well as the farmer himself from Carriage house farms. Now mind you I come from a family of chefs, so I know good food when I see it.
The demo was fantastic but that is not the point I am trying to make. So we go to the restaurant to see what this is really all about. Do they really go to the farm and hand pick veggies and serve them in their restaurant? Do they really have seafood flown in the day of and serve it as fresh as they come? Do the really have beef from a local farm right here in Cincinnati?
Our questions were answered with a blunt halt. I ordered the mussel's in a white wine garlic sauce and my boyfriend ordered the burger with duck fat fries. As soon as that food hit the table I was assured that this was no ordinary restaurant. The presentation was beautiful. The plates were clean and everything on the dish was making sense harmoniously. The color was beautiful. The ingredients really were fresh from the farm. And the delicate finesse of these dishes was remarkable.
It was important to me that for my boyfriends birthday dinner that everyone at the table have a good time, and even with such a large party, the service was great. They even let us cut and eat my mom's birthday cake she brought into the restaurant which I thought was so sweet.
A few other tips:
+ Don't skimp on the drinks. We had the scotch sampler and it was great. We trusted them to pick the three for us and we loved the options they brought us.
+ This place stays open late and continues to serve food from a late night menu. Not a lot of other places can serve you this kind of quality food late night which is great!
All in all I think I am going to be visiting Nicholson's a lot more now and I hope that you will check it out too because it is definitely an experience!
Excellent lunch spot in the heart of downtown cincy. The food was great, the building charming and the service fantastic. The pretzel croissant was a little dry and the salmon wasn't as smoked as I would have liked, but it was still delicious, and paired with a good salad as well. Portion sizes were quite filling.
Review Source:A manager at Nicholson's recently got in touch with me about my review. She was very friendly and helpful, and she was honestly appalled by our experience. She took the time to listen to everything I had to say, and seemed genuinely upset that our event was not handled better. We spoke for about 20 minutes and by the end of our conversation I felt like I'd been heard, and I was satisfied that my complaints were understood by Nicholson's management.
It meant a lot to me that Nicholson's actually took the time to try to make things right. On top of a great conversation, the manager, even though she knew I was not looking for anything, offered to send us a gift card, so that we can "experience the restaurant the way it should be." This level of professionalism and pride in their work has really redeemed Nicholson's for me, and I'm looking forward to trying it out again when we are back in Cincy.
The new menu is awesome! They brought back mussels, which are delicious and have 2 sauce options. My husband had the grilled steak and duck fat fries. The steak was as tender as a filet and the fries were perfect too. I had the Carriage House Farms Grits. It is supposedly one of the only vegetarian meals on the menu. I am not a vegetarian, just a huge fan of grits and these did not disappoint. :) The wine and beer options are always plentiful! They also told us they only use all local foods. Our waiter was never nice and informative too.
Review Source:The drinks and service are top notch! I would give them 4 stars strictly as a pub. In fact, I've been here a half dozen times before and only had drinks and always left satisfied.
Yesterday I decided to try their food. I went with the crabcakes and the poutine. I think it would be in their best interest to have their entire kitchen staff walk the 7-8 blocks to Senate to find out what good poutine tastes like. This was arguably the worst poutine I've ever had. If there were any cheese curds, I certainly didn't see them. The dish was difficult to eat as the fries and gravy were literally spilling out of the small plate they serve it in. The crab cakes were barely any better. Actually, they weren't really crab cakes at all. They were crab balls. Picture falafel, but replace the filling with an overly breaded crab meat mixture.
I started this review as 3 stars, but the more I think about the food the more I realize that it needs to be 2 stars. Based on food alone, I wouldn't give them a single star if I had the option. If you go here, go for the drinks... skip the food.
The new menu is poor, and more expensive. $17 for fish and chips? Get real!
What used to be a fun place to knock back some pints and chomp on pub-style food is now some kind of tourist trap, fine dining disaster. So sad because this used to be such a great place to hang out with friends, and now it's another place that is style over substance.
We had a great lunch here. Â It was expensive but we spared nothing!
My friend had a sandwich which had large chunks of chicken, but was good. Â My salad was great and the made a special dressing that I could eat. Â My husband and other friend got a meat tray that wasn't listed on the menu, scotch eggs and duck fat fries and said every thing they had was great.
We also had beer flights (not listed on the menu, but available), and scotch flights. Â Yum and yum.
Atmosphere was good, they had an outdoor seating area but it was so hot we didn't sit there. Â
Waitress was friendly and kept the same pace as us.
This place is amazing. Fantastic beer selection and creative mixed beer drinks as well (Young's Chocolate Stout + Breckenridge Vanilla Porter = Oreo Cookie!!). We had brunch here with a big group and the food was great. The polenta was to die for! Extra star for the fact that we came in dressed in running clothes and dripping sweat after a run on an unseasonable warm May day in Cincinnati and we were still met with enthusiasm, smiles, and even provided some bar towels to towel off a bit. Fantastic service, amazing wait staff, great food, vast beer selection, and whiskey at an incredible value. What more can you ask for?
Review Source:Duck fat fries! Geeeeeet your duck fat fries! I may or may not have had the biggest craving for duck fat fries this week and I knew exactly where to satisfy that craving!
Nicholson's is a terrific tavern and pub across from the Arnoff on Walnut Street in downtown Cincinnati near the Contemporary Art Center. I've been here twice now and will continue to go back. Although I've only had two things here, the food is terrific especially the duck fat fries. These fries have a salty taste that you can only get from frying in duck fat, and they are served with homemade ketchup. The grilled cheese sandwich is also amazing. They use a tasty aged cheddar cheese instead of craft slices between two terrific, crispy pieces of bread.
The interior decorating is amazing. All dark hardwood and very pub-y. They appear to have a large selection of single malt scotches as well that I will one day get into. I usually don't drink because the two times I've been there have been lunch breaks. Can't go back to work sloshed, I've always said that !
The menu looks very tasty and each time I go from now on I will try something different.
I had a great time while at Nicholson's the other night! Great service, delicious food, and a perfect location for pre-Aronoff show dining!
My husband and I started off our meal with the duck fat fries, and they are some of the best fries we have ever had! For my main course, I chose the lamb shank and substituted in the mashed potatoes for the grits. My meal was just okay (did not enjoy the tomato sauce on top of the lamb), but my husband's chicken was literally the best chicken I've ever tasted. For dessert, we shared the Apple Cobbler and OH MY GOSH it was so good.
I can't wait to go back, I think when I do, I'll have to try a burger.
Good place to start the night drinking.
Beyond their dedicated scotch flights...

their poutine was pretty solid;

They also have a good selection of beer on tap and our bar tenders made some really good recommendations. I'd go back.
Like the other local locations in the Tavern Restaurant Group (most notably their pair of "Pubs" at Crestview Hills and Rookwood) Nicholsons tries hard to conjure up some kind of notion of a proper British pub.
Except this notion only exists in the mind of someone with what appears to be little clue about what a British pub is like. Nicholsons is about as authentic as that $5 designer watch you can buy from a vendor further up on Vine Street. ("Hey hon, does Rolex have one 'x' or two in its name?")
Let's put this another way, it's less real than the pub in the 'England' section of Disney's Epcot and I couldn't stop laughing at _that_ one for weeks afterwards!
What IS this chain's fascination for having their staff wear kilts? I defy anyone to find a proper British pub where the barman wears a kilt. If you do I can guarantee you he will be sitting in a pool of his own blood and spittle somewhere in one corner of the place, the target of some unkind ridicule from the 'regulars'. He will doubtless also have "tosser" written in lipstick on his forehead.
It's all so fake it makes Joan Rivers' face look normal.
If you treat it as just another bar there's still not the biggest reward, although I'll gladly give them an extra star for the Bourbon cocktail they served me up - that was by far the highlight of my visit.
As a Brit wishing to have a taste of my roots, I chose their bangers and mash with gravy, described on the menu as having "authentic British sausages". Authentic according to who(m) exactly? These were tiny little links tasting nothing like the bangers I grew up with (and still enjoy every time I go back home). In fact I wondered if my plate had been rinsed properly when it was washed as all the food tasted peculiarly like a wet dishcloth rather than any kind of British delicacy. (Yes, I know you're dying to make your own joke here - please refrain!)
To add insult to the injury of $17 dishcloth-tasting food, let's also take into account that this swanky downtown venue pretends to be a British pub, but when I made a simple request for some English mustard to go along with my sausages the server shook her head and gave me a look that suggested I had a fluorescent purple booger hanging out of both nostrils. No Colmans? That's .... thats .... taking the piss.
This place wouldn't last a week in Britain. By all means gave it a try if you're curious but please don't sit there and believe you're in anything that even vaguely resembles the kind of place that exists across the pond. If you do, then let me tell you about this bridge I've got for sale....
You can't go wrong with Nicholson's scotch selection. They also have great menu items; never been disappointed with what I've ordered.
It can get cold in the back dining area if you're looking for some 1:1 time with whoever you're with, and then too loud towards the front. Just stay away from the doorway and order Bangers n' Mash.
That is all.
Great beer selection, but closes so early during the week! Â
First, the beer.  Some good rare drafts and bottles, served up by knowledgeable  kilt-wearing bartenders.  Domestic craft offerings and cider were available on draft last I was there.
Feels like a traditional British pub, but much better as it is better lit, has cold beer, and, well, isn't in England. Â
I can't speak to the food, but for me if I'm looking for a good place to drink, this is the spot. Â Major note is that they close at 10pm on Thursdays - so early for such a major night for going out!
We were not sure about this choice for Thanksgiving Dinner, but we couldn't get reservations anywhere else. Â Boy were we lucky. Â Although the food is all Scottish, they did have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner as a special.
Nicholson's has an extensive collection of single-malt whiskeys. Â My son began with a Dalwhinnie 15 yr old. Â My wife ordered a Glenmorangre flight: Â Lasanta, Quinta Ruban, and Necter D'Or. Â She split the flight with Mom and I.
Three of us had the Thanksgiving special. Â It was giblet gravy on top of moist turkey on top of mash potatoes, cornbread stuffing casserole on top of cranberries, and a fresh onion ring on top of fresh green beans with a butter-cream sauce. Â My wife had fish and chips. Â They were hand breaded fresh fish fillets.
For desert my wife had sticky pudding. Â Mom and Son had warm pecan pie with vanilla ice cream on the side. Â And I had sweet potato pie. Â It was an entire 6" pie!
They have 5 Scottish beers on tap, and somehow we managed to fit in two pints of Bresser lager.
2.5-3
Caesar salad with salmon -- Grilled salmon was decent, the salad itself was pretty weak.
Braised short rib eggs benedict -- The english muffin was not good, the short rib was boring, and the bernaise sauce came apart. Â If your hollandaise/bernaise is no longer an emulsion, DO NOT F#$#ING SERVE IT. Â Its that simple. Â It was a mess of curdled milk solids and clarified butter in a bowl.
I love that they have a good scotch collection, but that doesn't make a restaurant.
Love the idea, but they just don't seem to get enough people in there to keep the inventory turning over enough to stay fresh. Â Get better kitchen staff.
An English pub Downtown? I had no idea! We came here for dinner and were seated in a nice corner booth. With the high backs, it felt like our own little cubby. Nicholson's has the look of a standard pub: lots of polished cherrywood.
I ordered the fish n' chips, and we split some fried pickles as a starter. The pickles were piping hot and came with a side of delicious tzatziki dipping sauce. When the mains arrived, I knew at first glance that I'd need a take away bag. The portions are HUGE!
My plate came with three filets of crunchy fish with a side of fries and coleslaw. I steadily worked my way through the plate, but I still had to take one and a half filets home. I must say, this was some of the best fish n' chips in the city. Instead of being deep fried, the filet was coated in crunchy breadcrumbs. The fish was fresh, tender, and flaky, just the way I like it.
Our server was very pleasant and checked in on us frequently. We both ended up taking half our meal home with us, which made for a delicious lunch the next day. The waitress even brought me a full To-Go cup of tartar sauce. I was impressed.
I'll definitely be back when I get that craving for English fare, especially the fish. I also noticed they have Poutine on the menu... and you can't keep me away from that!
Price per person: $20.00
Nobody comes to Nicholson's to "make the scene," and that alone sets it apart from the watering holes it's surrounded by.
It's a physically gorgeous room, with a large wooden bar and high ceilings. Â The beer list is better than most in Cincy, with a concentration of course on UK selections. Â The scotch list is also very good, though significantly reduced in size over the years. Â The food is a bit on the pricey side for the quality; on my last several visits, I've stuck to a scotch egg (or two) and that's never failed me. Â Service, either while at the bar or in a large group, has also been above average.
A good choice before a show at the Aronoff, or if you'd just like to avoid insanely loud hip hop in favor of actually hearing what your friends have to say.
I'll be honest, I don't really eat at Nicholson's. I imagine their food is similar to that of their sister restaurant, The Pub at Rookwood (which is delicious). I come to Nicholson's to drink. They always have excellent draught beers like Young's Double Chocolate Stout. Even better is their amazing whiskey selection. Specializing in a large assortment of scotches and bourbons, that have an entire wall of whiskey.
The only bad things I have to say are that they have a soft closing time, which is usually sometime between 11pm and 1am. This means that if you are bar hopping and want to stop by, there is a good chance they will already be closed. Also, one time I ordered from their late night menu. Â I wasn't expecting the best hummus ever, but this was exceptionally bad. I still sometimes wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, haunted by the memory of the time hummus was going to be the perfect delicious late night snack to compliment my drunken stupor, but instead I was forced to eat a flavorless paste. I'm not saying their whole late night menu is bad, this was just one experience I had with it.
I am definitely a fan of Nicholson's. It's a great place not only for lunch but even for a happy hour with your co-workers. It's not the best British/Irish/Scotish Pub I've been to, but it's a great place.
The food is definitely a great surprise. The food is good and even great for a business lunch.
They have a great selection of Beer on tap & Scotch, it's amazing. They even have Strongbow on tap!
If you are there for food, just walk past the bar and you will find the hostess station and the actual restaurant is just beyond that.
Nicholson's is the stereotypical downtown across-the-pond restaurant. Every city's got one - a British pub or, in this place, a Scottish tavern. However, even though you come to expect these places, I'm always surprised by the quality of food and beer selection here. It's pretty wonderful.
I visited London a few years ago and this, along with The Pub at Rookwood Mews (another Tavern Restaurant spot) feels pretty spot on. Everything is made of dark wood. There's a massive bar area with booths as you walk in and then some real tables in the back. It's really a great place to sit, morning or night.
There aren't really a lot of things representing Scotland on the menu - more England (Sheppard's Pie, Bangers, etc.) and American (burgers and the likes.) However, their fish and chips are one of the better ones in the city. If you're into it and want some nice fried fish and fries and delicious tartar sauce, this is your spot.
They're alcohol selection - damn. Pages and pages of things on tap and in bottles and bottles of hard alcohol and so on. If you're craving an unusual style of beer, it's more than likely they've got it here. I've been to Nicholson's many times just for a drink.
There are some bits of annoying, like the menus coming with flags on them. Eh. Also, Scottish restaurant but no Scottish music? It doesn't have to be stereotypical stuff with bagpipes and whatnot, but I'd love to hear something I hadn't heard before - rather than the same tunes being played at every other eatery.
Seriously, though, order up a pint and some fish and chips and, brotha', you got it made.
There are many things in this world that pull humanity together. In our dark hours, our troubling times, we find a common solace within each of us that we can relate upon with others. We are reminded that while the world feels quite large and the differences between us seem grand, we are all one.
Of course, I am talking about beer.
I ordered the Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Aged Ale from their diverse menu of draught beer (some of them, cask-conditioned). The waiter, a real friendly fellow, asked if I had ever tried it before. I mentioned Angel's Share, a bourbon barrel aged ale made by The Lost Abbey that I love. He hadn't heard of it. And so we began an info-sharing moment, exemplifying the community-building traits that could unite even a society torn asunder.
I'm still talking about beer.
Upon first sip and swallow, a lingering hint of vanilla crept onto my tongue (not a euphemism, don't even try). This was quickly subdued by my piping hot Shepherd's Pie, flavorful and hearty. The combination of booze and warm things reminded me of the best of days, spent inside away from the cold, Christmases close to family, a fireplace and hot chocolate and a soup made from the finest of stewing meats...
Yes, beer.
Stopped by before a show at the Aronoff. Â Hostess initially refused to seat us because they were oh so busy and booked up, then wait a sec, every table behind me is empty, here's your table. Â Just bizarre, but ok.
Server was very nice. When my wife was in college, she worked at this hokey steakhouse that was 1870's Wild West/California themed. This is pretty much the equivalent of that, subbing Scottish for San Francisco. Â Nice looking building, but it's definitely faux, kind of a Disney World take on an european pub.
Food was decent - grilled salmon was a little undercooked but fine, risotto was kind of bland but any risotto is good risotto. Â Wife had a salad & some vegan friendly sides, she was happy.
They offered a beer sample (four 5oz servings) from the drafts for just $5, thought that was an excellent deal.
Not a bad choice if you're headed to a show across the street or want to grab a drink afterwards. Â Food wasn't memorable, but no problems either.
