The chicken here is good in general but the chicken pita sandwich is not.  That poor chicken didn't get any lovin from the marinade at all.  I was basically eating a plain chicken and mayo sandwich with lettuce.  Adding bbq sauce helps a lot but the sandwich doesn't make use of what makes their chicken good.

If you want my advice, stick with what they're known for.  Don't be adventurous here.

Go here all the time when I don't feel like cooking! I have never had anything but the chicken, but who needs too?
Would love to give five starts, but sometimes the cashier gets the orders wrong and over charges us, or doesn't understand us.

For 'non-fancy' restaurants, I believe that most do one thing perfectly. This is one of those places.

I've never had anything but the 'ChickenOnAPita' from this place, and I've never been left hungry. I always order to go - So don't forget the sauce on the side. Oh and their Cole Slaw is a 4-star decent as well.

Just order the Pita. For $7, you can go wrong.

You can get a whole cut up char-broiled chicken and 2 large sides for only $17.50 which is nice. The other positive is that they give you fresh quartered pita bread, and some interesting salsa verde and rojo to dip it in. I definitely hit this place up when the hunger is strong. One other thing, stay away from my wife...

    Enjoy Suckas'!!!

Great chicken at this place. I moved out of the area a couple years ago and still find myself coming back for more! Chicken pita sandwich, bbq sauce, mac n cheese, and the mashed taters are my faves, but I've never really had anything I don't like.

This place is def a Chicago police department hangout though, having seen them on numerous occasions. They always seem really chill though, I guess good chicken will do that to you =)

I live right down the street from here and have stopped in on more than a few occasions. I always get the white meat, and 2 sides usually mashed potatoes and mac and cheese, although I tried the cole slaw recently and it was delicious!

The chicken is tender and not dry at all. The staff are wonderful, service is quick and the pita bread they give as a side is so good. This is a place I go if I need something quick- and I also have used the leftover chicken to make chicken salad.

No frills here, it's chicken and some sides and these guys must be doing something right because they have been around for years.

I'm often working over at the Map Room taking advantage of the free wi-fi and Nick's is really close, so it makes for a good quick lunch option. I went with 1/4 chicken, a side of cole slaw and a drink for under $8. Yum! Whenever I can score a tasty lunch like this for under $10 it just makes the day better. All the sides on the menu sounded great but I love cole slaw so it was hard to pass up. My buddy got the Mac & cheese and he said it was really good. Guess I should have asked or a bite.

Friendly, lots of CPD officers dining this pm. Did take out. Whole Chicken and two sides. Chicken tasty, slaw good, beans a little canned, Campbell's, food service style. Had our own corn and watermelon.  In all better than a grocery store roast chicken and I can walk there from home.

If you are going to do one thing, do it well.  Nicks does chicken well.  The menu says it all - 1/4 chicken, 1/2 chicken, whole chicken, chicken salad, chicken pita.  What else do you need?  BBQ sauce is deliciously spicy and the salsa is great.  Sides that I've tried are all great (slaw, potatoes w/chicken gravy, mac&cheese).

I work just down the street, and if I don't bring a lunch, Nick's is always on my options list. My go-to is the 1/2 dark chicken with 2 sides. Fall off the bone chicken with tasty skin. Mac and Cheese is always good, coleslaw or green beans is my other side. Includes pita as well (which is what I actually use as my napkin).  And this is all for very cheap. I leave very satisfied, but not food coma satisfied. Dammit. Another craving while writing a review. It's Sunday, and I'm no where near work now. :(

My second visit after at least 5 years.  I have tried to like the chicken, but its too dry.  The chicken is worst when it becomes a leftover.

Boston Market is cheaper by $1 for the same half chicken and 2 sides.  Boston Market chicken is moist and still good for the next day.

Great quick lunch. Cheap. I expected to half home but it was that good that I ate it all. Chicken is awesome, comes with many sides too.

Third time at Nick's this week. Seriously -

Various sides, baked beans, slaw, mac and cheese, fries... all pretty basic and good. Nothing too special but... the chicken soup - out of this world on a rainy day. SERIOUSLY cures whatever ails you. Ask for red hot sauce and put it in there and it'll change your life.
As I type I am indulging in their basic grilled chicken - PRETTY MUCH incredible. If you are a skin-lover, GET ON THIS. Delicious. The chicken is tender, juicy, perfectly awesome and great.
    Get to Nick's IMMEDIATELY!

Very solid, very inexpensive fast food. The grilled chicken wins where it counts: the meat is very juicy and the bird is cooked through to perfection. Having said that, the skin is not very well-seasoned; I felt no guilt taking it off. The baked beans are okay, as is the grilled pita. Still, it's hard to argue with the price (under $7 for a 1/4 chicken meal) - only marginally more expensive than Pollo Express. I'll definitely be back.

I stopped here to pick up dinner last week when it was like 100 degrees outside. With this heatwave who feels like cooking. I walk in and it was only slightly cooler inside than the temperature outside. I ordered the whole chicken + 2 sides (mashed potatoes and green beans). The breast was dry, the wings were overdone and the green beans were from a can.

I don't like giving 3 star reviews, but I simply was not impressed with Nick's Pit Stop.

For future reference, get the a/c working properly.

5 stars for what it is.  The chicken is fantastic and love the BBQ atmosphere.  Been here 10 times over the years and every time I take someone they are impressed and then I wait a year.  Go here

I first went to Nick's about 10 years ago and was back again this past weekend. In all that time I don't think anything has changed about the place. The food is decent at a reasonable price. I've had just about everything on the menu at this point. Nothing is spectacular, but nothing is bad either. The red and green salsas are OK but they serve them ice cold so it can be hard to pick up the flavor. Let them warm up a bit and they're much better. I do wish they used a tastier lettuce. The iceberg they use just washes out the flavor of the pita sandwich.

A decent meal for less than $10...hard to complain about that.

i'm not really feeling this place.  Few things:  I love Chicken Hut on Broadway/Belmont so I do like these sorts of chicken places.

1st off, the Chicken was dry.  Second it lacked in flavor.  That pretty much does you in at that point.  They have a bbq sauce which tasted exactly like Open Pit which is probably like the *only* BBQ sauce on the planet that I do not like.  They also had red and verde salsas....again, lacking in flavor.  To that I say, consistency is not always a virtue.

Anyway, here's another thing....I find it hard to pay 6$ for a 1/4 chicken/side when you can get an entire whole roasted Chicken from Archer Farms (Target) for $4.99 any day of the week.  For a buck or two more you can get a whole roasted chicken at any number of grocers...Dmicks, Cermak Produce, Jewel, etc...

I've had food from here twice.  Once my husband picked me up the chicken pita for lunch and tonight we ordered the whole chicken dinner to be delivered for dinner.  Both times I've been really happy.

The chicken is so delicious, I don't think words even exist to describe it.  It falls right off the bone and is so moist and tender.  I don't love their bbq sauce, but I didn't feel like I needed it anyway.  We also got the spanish rice, mac and cheese and green beans as sides, and I was very pleased with all three.

The best part?  They delivered it so fast they put "freaky fast" to shame.  Our food arrived hot and delicious about 20-25 minutes before the ETA.

I live down the street from this place and decided to give it a try.

We ordered a whole chicken dinner with corn and macaroni 'n cheese as sides. The chicken was good expecially for being char-broiled.  The price was right. I was happy with our meal. BTW we ordered it to-go. Limited seating availability inside.

    Service was friendly.

    I would  go here again.

Its practically the same thing, except Nicks has mac/cheese, chili and soup. I don't believe Planet does. Am I leaving anything out? let me know. I'll update the review.

Simple. Quick. Cheap. Good? It does the trick for a quick and satisfying bite but its nothing special beyond that.

People seem to like the mac n' cheese based on other reviews but didn't find it to be anything beyond the standard.  Same goes for their BBQ sauce . . . not any different than the sweet ketchupy sauce that we've all had time and time again.

I went with the chicken pita which had lettuce, tomato, and a pretty generous squeeze of mayo that definitely provides the moisture that the chicken kinda lacks.

Sandwich, side, and drink for $8.04 - not too shabby

I'll probably be by again since its close to where I live and will suffice when I don't want to overthink my food options!  Next time I'll give the 1/2 chicken a try and perhaps the Spanish Rice as my side . . . we'll see how that turns out

My work friend picked up a chicken salad for me at Nick's Pit Stop. After scanning their menu, it was the only thing I would eat.

It was OK. The chicken was a little dry and the dressing looked like mayo. The salad was basically diced chicken on a bed of iceberg with sliced tomatoes. The pita bread was good though. For a carb lover like me, I could eat their pita bread all day.

I don't see any reason to return. On a side note: my work friend ate a half roasted chicken in less than 20 minutes. Impressive!

A quick bite to eat in the neighborhood, you can't go wrong.  Under 10  bucks for a Chicken Pita with a side.  The chicken is tasty and always fresh.  The cut the chicken made to order, so it's always hot and fresh.

My advice - Chicken pita, side of Mac and a soda - Sold!

Don't let the limited menu fool you, what they serve up is well worth the few choices because what they make is made very well for the most part.

The charbroiled chicken is freakin' fantastic. Moist, flavorful and the skin is nice and crispy. Makes for a nice contrast when usually at other chicken joints the skin is covered in breading or is soggy and mushy.

The sides are ok. The mac & cheese is decent, but the mashed potatoes are a little tragic. Tastes like it came from a box. The homemade brownies are great tho.

And then there's the much talked about chicken chili. Since people here on Yelp seem to brag about it so much I had to have a taste myself. And once I popped the lid off the container I have to admit, it smelled heavenly. That is, until you eat a spoonful...  You know when you're washing your hair and some of the shampoo runs into your mouth as you rinse? That's what I was reminded of as I ate the chili. Well, spicy shampoo. Such a letdown.

Will I return? For the charbroiled chicken, you bet your ass. But that's about it.

Aw, I had such high hopes for Nick's after seeing the delicious looking chicken through the window, but the chicken was just okay.  i think we were one of the first customers of the day as our order took a while to fill, so I would assume we got fresh, moist chicken.  But no, the chicken was dry, and not very flavorful.

I got the chicken pita sandwich and I'm glad they put mayo on it which added some juice and flavor.  I also had to salt and add bbq sauce.  The sandwich is huge, which is good, but it was didn't taste like anything special.  I made it a combo for $2.35 and added a side of mac and cheese and a drink.  Portion of mac & cheese was also very big, but it was dry and bland.  Not creamy enough for me.  We also got the 1/2 white meal with 2 sides, both mashed potatoes.  Skin on the chicken was nice and crispy, but also not too flavorful.  He used about 4 packets of salt on the chicken.  Usually the tenderloin is the juiciest of the breast, but the tenderoin here was tough and dry - kind of disappointing.  Mashed potatoes with beef gravy were very good though.  Not sure if we will ever be back if we're just going to get dry tough chicken again.

Went there the other day for lunch and had the chicken pita and loved it! Everything about the pita was so good and with a side and a drink, it is not too expensive. The sides looked really good and I wanted the mac and cheese, but decided to go a little healthier and get the pasta salad. Then I saw the pasta salad. It had tons of mayo on it instead of the italian that usually goes on the lighter pasta salads. Since I can't stand mayo, I didn't eat it, but my buddy did and he said it was pretty good.

There is not a lot of seating at this place and if you go at night, all the CPD like to eat there.

Quick. Cheap. And good. (That's what she said!)

Upon walking in, you'll immediately notice the rack of chickens on the grill. I always wonder who in the world is going to eat all those chickens? Apparently someone does as I have been coming to this place for over six years now and they keep on grilling 'em up!

The menu is fairly simple. No burgers. No steak. Just good old fashioned fowl and very delicious sides. You can order your chicken by the quarter, half, whole, or as a sandwich stuffed in a pita. I have had them all, but generally go with the pita sandwich and a couple of sides. I'm always torn on which sides to get, but  you can't go wrong with the macaroni and cheese and mash potatoes with gravy. For those who like a little kick, top your pita sandwich with some of Nick's homemade tomatillo sauce. It's not the hottest, but definitely fresh and tasty.

Nick's is still awesome! Comfort/fast food at it's finest!

Tender, juicy chicken - Mmm hmm!
Warm pita bread - Way better than biscuits!
Buttery mac & cheese - So bad for you, tastes SO good!
Rockin' salsa - I love the red stuff!

The prices and service are great. Nick's Pit Stop is solid.

That chicken pita thing.... soooo good.  I LOVE the red sauce they put on the thing.  What IS that sauce?  It's SO good.  I once paid the guy to let me take a container of the stuff home with me.

The chicken is not dry at all.  It is juicy and flavorful.

Then there are the sides.  Mac n Cheese- sooo good.  Flavorful.  Not bland and not dry.  I hate that dry Mac N Cheese.  Really creamy.  SO GOOD!

Mashed potatoes, gravy, biscuits... oh my GOD.  I LOVE this place.

I don't mind the price because I feel like you get a lot of food and really, $8 or $10 isn't too expensive in a city like Chicago for an entire meal.

I love this place.  The chicken is always done exactly how it should be, and the mac and cheese is perfect.  Not bland like the kind you buy at the supermarket deli.
They could be a bit cheaper though.  $8 puts them in the same category as better restaurants.

If you're ever craving down home cookin', stop by Nick's.  You walk in and they have a hundred chickens roasting on the grill (does that make sense?).  They have the standard sides that go with chicken:  mashed potatoes, mac n' cheese, greens, etc.  It's like Boston Market, but fresh tasting and 10 times better.

I usually get the chicken on a pita combo.  The sandwich comes with white or dark meat chicken, lettuce, tomato, & mayo, but I don't roll that way.  Hot, shredded lettuce makes me gag, so I go with the chicken, pita, and I ask them to put some of that tasty chicken gravy on it.  Oooo-wee!  Then, you get your choice of a side.  The funny part about it all is that the Mexican guys who work behind the counter always ask if you want salsa with your order.  Salsa?  On what?

    Nice little chicken joint.

Nick's offers chicken, essentially, and lots of it, by whole or quarter, quarter dark, quarter white what-have-you, charbroiled.  He has them going on the grill maybe 100 at a time, and they come out juicy and sweet.  It's good eatin', and the meal combos are a decent price, the sides are tasty, mashed potatoes, mac 'n cheese and such.  The pita bread it all comes with is decent also, and they offer all sorts of sweet sauces to go with.

    I commend it!

The Pit Stop is great. It's got a family feel - and if the fuzz grubs there you know it's good. (Seriously, if you had your choice of food in the city would you pick the crummy spots??)

Ordered a 1/4 portion, with some pasta salad and it comes with a warm pita and your choice of salsa or BBQ. The salsa was delicious.

They're always cooking chickens on the grill behind the counter. And I mean like 50 of them!

Service was quick and there's nothing like ordering food and watching it come off the grill and go onto your plate.

Picked up a cup of the chicken chili (yes, chicken...getting the theme?) - it's spicy and delicious. I could only try a bit -- wayyy too full from the chicken.

All for under $10...but I brought my own drink. Assuming you don't get the chili you'd still be in the right range.

Great neighborhood spot. Would do it again. The "Colonel" can kiss Nick's ass!

UPDATE: Closed for remodeling on 03/29/2008. No date of completion posted - also a sign from the City of Chicago about some retail tax thing....uh-oh!

I have been going to Nick's for years and since I eat chicken every day of my sad life, they really come in handy.  The chicken is moist and juicy, never dry or overcooked which is usually the case with quick order chicken places.  Another big plus, their sides are decent, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, assorted healty stuff I never eat.    Its nice to have the option of eating a well cooked pc of chicken without waiting half an hour or even worse, have it fried (not that I don't love fried chicken)  And nothing says love like a warm pita fresh off the grill!

I always feel safe because of the ever present law enforcement enjoying a breast or two.  And everyone knows the cops know their food!  Especially in Chicago.  The cooks and staff have always been very friendly to me and have let me try stuff when trying to decide which side to commit to, so really whats not to love?  Prices are fair and they keep the place clean and they always have my to-go order ready and waiting for me.

Why only 4 stars:  I personally hate the tall stools but thats just because I'm sooo short I always think I'm going to fall over and the tables are too small to eat and read the paper which is pretty much how I roll.

Like others have mentioned, there are always police in this place and they usually know good food.

The simple menu makes ordering a breeze.  I had been a 1/2 white meat person until last night when I tried the chicken pita.  It was outstanding.  All white meat w/ lettuce and tomato in a pita.  Throw on some of their BBQ or salsa and you have yourself a delicious, healthy treat.

    The sides are good, too.

This is a great place for down home type food.

    uhuh uhuh uhuh!!!

    POLLO POR FAVOR!

get the pita sandwich for under $5 or if you're hungry get a whole chicken combo with 2 sides and a discounted drink. Mashed potatoes with Chicken Gravy, Corn or even some Mac n Cheese...and don't forget the extra BBQ sauce(for takeout or delivery it comes in little plastic takeout cups, so ask for as many as you can get) and some pita bread too!

yes, parking in the hood isn't easy, sometimes there is 15 minute parking with hazards open right in front, or try the street down armitage either way as the walk isn't so bad and well worth the effort.

Bathroom is in the back if you dine in, just ask the girl at the counter.

Good place to take out. They do have a few "chairs and tables" which are these really tiny round tables and very high small stools. Needless to say it's uncomfortable, especially for more than one person.

I like the chicken, with it's grilled and smokey flavor. You can get the smaller or larger size. I also like their variety of sides. Personally, I like how the pita tastes, similar to the chicken,smokey-like.Nothing blah-er than a bland plain pita (except maybe rice cakes).

As someone who doesn't like to spend too much money eating out, I  think the prices are reasonable (say compared to Potbelly) for what you get.

Whole roasted chickens, and by chickens, I mean MANY large birds. Behind the counter, they are slowly cooked over a huge grill. There are always Chicago cops enjoying a quick bite and the vintage license plates on the walls give it a friendly vibe.

As for the food, the chicken pita here is the best I've had. A large selection of salsas and hot sauces make sure you have whatever flavor you were looking for. The only thing keeping it from five stars is the price. It's a bit much for a pita everyday, but worth getting at least once a week.
