For what this place is here in Nyack, you just can't go wrong at Olive's. Â Very nice and cool bartenders. Â Good food. Â Very underrated for main street bar food scene. Â They have fresh unsalted homemade potato chips at the bar on the house. Â Known for its Live music scene at night a few times a week at least. Â You will always see a few locals here. Â Very comfortable place to have a drink and just chill right on Main Street!
Awesome specials during Happy Hour every single day!
Olives has always been one of my favorite local go-to spots in nyack. The crowd is way more laid-back, but definitely brace yourself for some hipster types. There's live music every week, and the local talent can actually be pretty good at times, but damn does it get LOUD on those nights! There's a set of pool tables in the back and the selection of brews is great, they carry a lot of local craft beers (IPAs, Defiant, etc.). Food is pretty cheap and not bad for bar food. Definitely recommended for a chill night out
Review Source:Visited this location during the evening hours on 02/28/12. Â I must say I will definitely return to this bar. Â
THE PROS:
- happy hour goes from 5pm to 9pm
- I volunteered to pay for the first round (4 beers on tap / during happy hour) and was elated when the bartender asked for $11 Â
- we had wings and calamari (both were awesome)
- two pool tables with plenty of space to shoot
- backstage set up for live bands (I did not get to see the band because I left at 9pm)
- bartender was cordial and very knowledgeable of beers on tap
- great selection of drafts
- plenty of seats (very long bar)
- very cool display of antique items throughout the bar
THE CONS:
- depending on the time of your arrival, street parking could be an issue
- could have used a little more sauce with the calamari (I know, I know. . . .I should have just asked for more. Â lol )
Wow.. I have not been here in yearsssss and what.a.change. Â Seriously, my friend and I didn't even know that the downstairs bathroom is only for men now. Â I remember when this place was a total dive bar and a half with many questionable patrons. Â We stopped in here Saturday night around 10pm and it was pretty dead. Â I'm not sure if that's because it was Easter and Passover weekend, but it was a little shocking. Â They still have live bands playing and some are good, some are OK and of course others completely suck. Â They've opened things up and have some pool tables off to the left of the bar and some new bathrooms upstairs for the ladies as well as the men. Â I live in downtown NYC and as other reviewers have pointed out, this is probably the closest thing you will get to a LES, ABC City or Brooklyn bar in Rockland County.
Review Source:I've only been a few times so far, but I'm a big fan of Olive's. It reminds me of some of the good dive bars back home: Dark atmosphere with a great beer selection, good bartenders, and a solid crowd. I haven't eaten there yet myself, but I've heard good things. It's nice to have a spot in downtown Nyack that let's you get away from all the yuppies during the day, and the douchbag 'bro' scene at night. (In fact, I'm pretty sure all the people trashing it here fall into one of those two categories.) I've only been once while they've had a band playing, and honestly wasn't too impressed. But I'm not going to make a judgement based on one instance. The other times, there was a fantastic & eclectic selection of tunes off their jukebox. Definitely added to the vibe of the place.
Review Source:This is the closest you're going to get to a Brooklyn bar on this side of the river. Some good selections on tap (Defiant, Dogfish Head, Dale's Pale etc.). The food is decent. I've had the wings and a chicken sandwich and they were solid bar eats. The staff here really bust their butts to get everyone lubricated.
They make a really strong effort to get some decent independent music acts here and are mostly successful. You can download whatever on the jukebox. Sometimes thats a good thing, sometimes bad, sometimes awesome (I'm lookin' at you "Return Of The Mack" by Mark Morrison)
Really, it's a great place to get drunk and then go eat pizza down the block at 1am.
If you're looking for a cheap, friendly dive bar, Olive's is great. Yes, the atmosphere is grungy, but that's part of its charm. Drinks are well-priced for Nyack, and the food is always good. The bartenders are nice, knowledgeable, and attentive. It's a nice break from the rest of the Nyack scene.
Review Source:As good as a neighborhood bar can hope to aspire to. Great pub food, beers and ales on tap for those who like, full bar for the rest of us, lol! Service friendly - shout out in particular to Murphy the bartender - Â knowledgeable and prompt, prices fair - great live music and company, so what else could you ask for on a friday night? :-) Â I highly recommend.
Review Source:These 1 star ratings are surely undeserved. Â Though most of what is said is true (grungy, divey) these are the reasons why the people who love Olives love it so much. Â
However, other comments are simply odd. Â Terrible parking? Â That's cause you're smack in the middle of the bar scene in Nyack. Â You're gonna have to handle this no matter where you go.
In short, If you are a fan of the pourhouse, black bear, or bourbon street, just forget about Olive's and go to where you're comfortable (and don't bother reviewing Olive's). If you're tired of spending time in cookie cutter bars, and like to have cheap vegan food options, then head straight to Olive's.
True, I lament the loss of the skiball machine and photobooth, but the bar still retains most of its style. You get a little bit of everything and everyone here, which is what I love about Nyack. Â It's not for everyone, but it's for me.
NOT JUST A BAR!
If you're looking for a healthy, affordable meal in Nyack, Olive's is the best restaurant! Nothing on the menu is over $10, the food is delicious, fresh, and healthy, and the waitstaff is honest and caring. While eating indoors can be a little dark, there are tables outside where you can people watch while you enjoy your vegan/ vegetarian/ or meat lovin' meal. Â
This is a great place for lunch!
After seeing a movie on a Sunday night, I went here with my Girlfriend. Honestly, we had a great time!
I was actually pretty shocked to see that Olive's has some terrible reviews. I remember leaving there saying more than once, "so, I think I like that place!"
Heres why:
The guy at the door noticed that the day before was my birthday so he said "happy birthday!" which is pretty nice to hear.
The bartender was glad to run down the beers and let me know what they have and what's the best. He had me at "I'm an IPA man" and gave a recommendation for a beer I had never heard of, which was amazing! Also, this guy had the most amazing mustache!
My girlfriend said her whiskey sour was amazing and the beers were good. Not a huge selection, but 60 min., captain Lawrence, and you can get a bucket of PBR's for $10! (ha!)
Now, like most people have said, the music wasn't very good. Even one guy was a little painful to hear. But, seeing people play their music in front of a crowed is respectable. Sort of makes you think "well, good for them." and it was something to talk about and listen to.
And although the music was nothing special, I just want to point out that for the two hours or so that we were there, we must have heard like six people play - maybe more! Keep in mind that this was a Sunday night! (maybe that's only surprising to me)
As for the bar being dirty, I didn't see it. I mean, it wasn't sparkling clean, but IT"S A BAR! And really, I never looked around and said "oh, it's so dirty in here", rather, I believe I said "this is nice. Pretty cool actually."
So, anyway, Olive's gets a good review from me, unlike all the other reviews here. Mostly because of good beer, amazing mustaches, and a "happy birthday".
New to the area, I always looked over as I drove down the block and thought it might be a fun place. Â Last evening on my walk home I found out why I will never find out. Â There was some sort of concert (mediocre music) happening and I walked by. Â I had to use the restroom so badly after a long bus trip back from NYC. Â I was contemplating a beer, and I walked in and asked this faux-hipster type (scrappy, handle bar moustache) as a courtesy if I could use his restroom (I prefer to ask even when I know I can just walk in). Â His reply, to my surprise, was "NO"! Â [This has happened all of about never in my lifetime - not even in a few years in NYC. ] He said they had a "benefit" going on, and reiterated they were for customers only. Â I didn't even know what to say as I never expected that kind of response. Â I suppose I should note the place was empty and there was no one waiting to use the restroom.
With a character like that serving up drinks I have no desire to find out whether this watering hole is place worthy of having a few drinks and passing some time.
If you want to go to a horrible, dirty, filthy bar.....this is your place!! Â terrible live music, and pretty bad food to boot. this place has it all. and the parking is terrible too. Â i would never eat/drink at this place ever again. Â so please, just walk by this place....their are plenty of other quality places to eat/drink in nyack. plenty!!
