My husband and I went to Pat's for dinner on 7/2/13. Â Our order was simple, he ordered a French Dip Sandwich with the homemade chips and I ordered a Ruben Sandwich with fries. Â After waiting about 30 minutes, I asked the waitress what was taking so long as our order was rather simple. Â The waitress went to check, came back and told us that their computer system was down and it would be about 4 more minutes. Â 12 minutes later, she arrived with our order, minus my fries, which took 5 more minutes to arrive. Â Not once during our wait time did the waitress herself initiate letting us know why it was taking so long or offer us something free or reduce the cost of our meal due to our wait. Â Additionally the food was nothing special to make it worth the wait.
Review Source:NOT what it used to be!
Sorry to have to write this review, because I thought the last time I was here, several months ago, was a fluke. It wasn't.
I was there the other night and guarantee the chicken looked nothing like the picture on this page. Smaller pieces and overcooked!
Doubt if I'll try, again.
The fried chicken is tops, no contest. The beer is cold. Server, Cara, was delightful as was Liz on a previous visit. The 3 stars is for the food, beer and staff.
Now for the "Half-star" stuff:
The rest rooms: Monday evening 13 May, men's room was filthy. Urinal was leaking. Stool was running and not filling. The auto hand dryer was not working. No towels to dry hands. No soap in hand soap dispenser. Water all over the floor.
I glanced into the kitchen to find someone to tell about the restroom situation and was startled to see stuff all over the kitchen floor. The kitchen was nuked. How did this pass health inspection? There was no body around to inform.
We come on Monday nights after golf league for the Monday night fried chicken "Dinner-Special" but this has been moved to Tuesday. You're killing us.
Clean the place up some is my advice.
Deep Fried Dive Bar with lots of personality. If you want to experience Dogtown, go to Pat's. Pat's was my first St. Louis pub experiences. It's one of my Dad's favorite places in the city for ice cold Budweiser. I remember going to ball games or to the zoo and then heading to Pat's afterward with my dad. Flash forward 20 years, I am now a citizen of St. Louis and I still love Pat's. I love the friendly waitresses, I love their incredibly small beer glasses, I love that everything down to your undergarments smell like fried chicken after going there, I just love it all.
I heard a rumor that Pat's is not doing to well, if this is true, GO NOW. It would be heartbreaking to lose such a great little place in the city that is known just as much for the memories St. Louisians have had there as for its great pub grub.
Went here recently specifically to get the fried chicken. The vibe was a little strange for me, very mixed crowd. There was a Blues game on, so there were obviously some people there just to watch the game who were a little rowdy. A random birthday or bridal party was happening. Then there were assorted older groups who came in just for dinner. I was a bit thrown off by this dude walking around doing caricatures for $10. Not sure if he's always there, though.
The server was nice, if slightly under-attentive. She dropped the wrong food off at our table and filled our drinks a bit less than I would have liked, but it was no big deal. It took us around 2 hours to order drinks/food, wait, eat, etc., so they may be a bit slow if you're one of those always in a hurry people.
Pat's has Tank 7 on tap, which made the boyfriend happy. He had the french dip and was pretty happy with it. Their mashed potatoes were really odd, not creamy the way I was expecting. I like the white gravy better than the brown gravy, but in the future I would not have it on potatoes. Now to the important part: the chicken. I definitely like how crispy the skin was, but it needed salt reeeaaally bad. I admit to liking my chicken salty, but it tasted like... well basically just the flavor of plain fried stuff, no seasoning. The meat was really juicy. I might go back for the chicken some time, but I think I will look into their takeout options. The boyfriend also tried the deep fried cheesecake, which was like a churro with cheesecake in the middle. It was a bit dry, though, and would definitely have been better with a dipping sauce.
Pros: fried chicken
Neutral: service, speed, atmosphere
Cons: creepy caricature guy, mashed potatoes
Food MIGHT be good... Wish i knew...
I will start by saying after ~90 minutes, I left without having eaten a thing. Â A friend and I got to Pat's at about 11:30 on the Saturday of Marti Gras... As many people from St. Louis know - Soulard is packed, the rest of the city is not. Â There was 1 large table (10 ppl or so including a few kids) and 2 other tables of 2 in the place (at least downstairs), which puts it at about 30% capacity. Â We ordered within 7 minutes of being there - 2 Chicken sandwiches; nothing difficult for a place that SPECIALIZES in chicken.
...Then we sat. Â
First 20 minutes: pleasant. Â Next 20: annoyed. Â Next 30: starving and frustrated.
At 12:55 the waitress came up and told us our sandwiches were going to be, "A little while..." as our original order had been overcooked. Â WHAT?? Â HOW MANY TIMES???... Â She offered a salad while we wait. Â
We decided to leave and with no apology, she asked, "Are you sure?" Â That was it. Â I have had the chicken sandwich before - about 4 years ago; it was great. Â I wish I could say it still is, but I doubt I will ever find out.
PATHETIC service for a slow Saturday.
P.S. If Pat's mgmt. is reading this, the waitress's name was 3 letters, starting with P.
I've driven by Pat's about a thousand times and never gone in, as it looked like a dive bar for regulars of which I was not one.
My fiance suggested we got to "this bar next to Forest Park" for dinner the other night. As we pulled up, I admit to thinking, "Aaah crap. Pat's? For dinner?" We walked in, and sure enough, it looked like a dive bar full of regulars (complete with drunk ladies yelling), and definitely did not look like somewhere you'd go for food.
People. Looks can be deceiving.
First of all I had obviously not done my Yelp research, or I would have known Pat's is a go-to for fried chicken. My fiance filled me in on this critical info. Secondly, any lingering doubts were allayed by the first bite of my spicy fried chicken sandwich. This stuff is seriously good. I would go back in a heartbeat. Juicy, flavorful, salty, crunchy...in sum, perfect fried chicken. The food took a little time to cook, which I took as a good sign - it came out hot and was clearly made to order.
Also, I would be remiss if I didn't point out that several guy friends have dubbed Pat's as having "the best Guinness pour in town." I'm not a big Guinness fan, but after trying some at Pat's, I think I could be.
So if Pat's grungy Dogtown dive bar atmosphere is not typically your thing, don't be deterred. Â Give 'er a shot - it's worth it.
Overall, Pat's is pretty good. Â They are known for their fried chicken and I would highly suggest ordering it. Â
They have a HUGE buffalo chicken sandwich (it's seriously huge, two people can easily split it) and a really good French dip sandwich. Â Jon's entree of choice is always the French dip; he really enjoys it every time we decide to go to Pat's. Â He orders onion rings as a side- they are always really lightly breaded and really tasty. Â He also really likes their fried chicken livers. Â I will NEVER order them and I will NEVER ever eat one. Â The concept of eating a chicken's liver disgusts me... but he really likes them. Â
The last time we went to Pat's, I ordered the chicken strip dinner. Â The strips are clearly homemade; they weren't seasoned at all- like... at all. Â They were served with the BEST sweet potato fries I've ever had in my life. Â They were on the thin side and fried to perfection. Â The strips tasted like they had been fried in the same oil as the fries- they had a sweet flavor to them that I really did not enjoy. Â
The service is always good, but the restaurant smells heavily of fried foods. Â I always have to wash my clothes immediately after eating at Pat's. Â That aside, I really do like the food and the service and I can't wait to go back for those sweet potato fries!
Pat's is a fun neighborhood corner spot (Oakland & Tamm) in the heart of Dogtown. Â They have a nice selection of food and spirits. Â The staff has always been very friendly and service always good. Â The atmosphere is one of a typical Irish pub, but they also have the second floor for more of the social drinking area. Â
Good place to stop for a pint while rolling through the Dogtown neighborhood. Â This place is usually packed on St. Patrick's Day so advise going there to have a nice sit down meal anything other day of the year. Â The fried chicken is pretty damn good so recommend giving that a shot. Â They have a decent selection of beer on tap, and any establishment that can pour a proper pint of Guinness as well as a Black & Tan is a fine establishment in my book.
Famous chicken dinner had no flavor or seasoning of any kind. We tried both the spicy and regular and found neither good. Â Of 4 orders, two were wrong and all 4 took a really long time. One order of rings never did come. Prices were reasonable, but servers were overwhelmed so service was below par. Â Bar was out of Guinness early on a sat evening. Not horrible, but not worth the trip.
Review Source:Let me preface my review by stating that I have eaten at Pat's for over 30 years in at least 2 incarnations. Â The fried chicken livers brought me back time after time. Â I also am a devotee of fried chicken. Â Pat's used to be among the best, sadly like all good things it has come to an end...an inglorious one at that.
Granted I was the first customer of the day, and the cooks were going over which items that the kitchen was "out of with the owner," and that should have been a warning.
Fried chicken has to cooked in hot oil or the breading soaks up the oil. Â Clearly Pat's frier was not at the proper temperature when my order was prepared. Â I had a to go order, for which I was charged a fifty cent service fee, something I have never have seen on a bill before. Â I did not use up waiter time or make the establishment wash china and utensils, but the charge for a styrofoam container was on my bill. Â
Pat's should have charged me for the extra oil that the chicken absorbed, because it was just plain greasy, not juicy just greasy. Â I hate to say it, but I had to remove the skin and breading to eat the meat.
Getting back to the food, Emeril loves to say, " I don't know where you buy your flour but where I buy mine they do not season it." Â Pat's should have watched Emeril's show, because the breading and the chicken had no salt and no pepper. Â I ordered the "spicy" version of the dinner, so I hate to think how anything could have been blander, if I had ordered the unspicy version.
I am a certified meat judge for both the KC and St. Louis BBQ society,. When judging chicken the first thing you check is the meat near the bone. Â The bones and meat should not be bloody and juices should be clear. Â Do you hear me Pat? Â Cook your chicken to the minimum FDA standard of 165 degrees at the bone. Â Raw chicken can cause salmonella poisoning. Â My chicken was not cooked to the bone.
How hard is it to fry a french fried potato? Â If kids do it at McDonalds! Â It amazed me that the two cooks at Pat's could not cook a fry until it was done, or brown. Â Blonde hard fries are horrible, and the ones I brought home went into the trash.
I did not open the slaw yet, so I cannot comment on it.
I should have taken my to go meal back to Pat's but I live 20 miles one way, and the garbage pail was cheaper than gasoline.
Even if the food had been properly cooked, $9.00 for 1/2 of a medium sized chicken and a few fries with 3 oz. of cole slaw is a but much. Â When the food is poorly prepared, it is a total waste.
Friends had told me Pat's had gone down hill, but I did not believe them. Â Hint, I should have listened to my friends. Â Save your craving for fried foods, KFC puts Pat's to shame, and that is a shame.
What the cluck?!
Pat's Bar & Grill is apparently known for its chicken. Â I'm no stranger to drumsticks and drumlettes, so after trying their famous fried chicken, I found myself somewhat perplexed. Â What was so famous about it?
This establishment seems to have its following. Â We hit it up on Saturday evening, and it was hopping with the locals of Dogtown, mostly q-tips. Â We found ourselves a table right smack dab in the middle, and our server greeted us in a timely fashion. Â Everything else that she did for us lacked that fashion.
Being the beer connoisseurs that we are, my wife and I ordered two PBRs. Â After several minutes without our beer order being filled, I asked the waitress where they might be. Â She informed us that they had no cold PBR and threw some on us. Â Well, why not tell us that, so we can order a different beer? Â I got my new drink request quickly, but then my wife didn't receive hers. Â Again, the Schlafly that she ordered wasn't cold, so they threw some on ice! Â She then finally settled for a Bud Light.
Remember. Â This place was hopping, but they only had two servers and a bartender. Â Our waitress was sweet but obviously overwhelmed. Â I asked her about the Yelp check-in special, half-priced wings, and she went to check on it and never came back with an answer. Â We had already made our food order, so I didn't press the issue.
And now to the chicken! Â My wife order strips, and I ordered the "famous" half chicken. Â The breading had little flavor, but the meat was fresh and juicy. Â My wife thought that her strips were kind of dry. Â Instantly, I was looking for something to dip my chicken in but only found ketchup. Â Defeated, I devoured my meal and dreamed of several chicken dishes that could have been.
Overall, I think that I could be a fan of Pat's, but my first visit didn't win me over. Â The workers were super nice, but they need to have more staff on a Saturday night.
I'm a huge fan of anything deep fried at Pat's. Â It's got a dive bar/Cheer's quality to it and you'll see regulars lining the bar chatting it up with the bartender. Â Located in Dogtown right across from turtle park it's the perfect place to go after a visit to the zoo. Â I highly suggest getting their fried chicken livers. Â I take my Dad here every time he comes to town as he claims they are the best he's ever had. Â Those of you adventurous eaters will be glad to see that they, also, have frog legs on the menu. Â Wash it all down with a cold draft. Â Their prices are reasonable and you won't break the bank.
Review Source:I know that I have raved about the Moonlight in Bethalto IL having hands down the best fried chicken in the St. Louis Metropolitan area, and I stand by that. Â However, after tasting the fried chicken at Pat's Bar & Grill last night I am going to say that their fried chicken is the best in St. Louis proper!. Â
Pat's is a fun neighborhood tavern, kind of dark and worn like a comfortable old coat. Â We had the onion straws , Â unremarkable but good. Â They kind of kept reminding me that I had consumed them later on, Â but that's more of a statement on my middle age I think. Â We also tried the chicken fried steak. Â Having grown up with grand parents with a large ranch in central Texas, Â I am rarely happy with ordering chicken fried steak anywhere as my grandmother set the bar for it high and early in my childhood. Â Pat's chicken fried steak was just ok, I'm not certain but am reasonably sure it was a frozen pre breaded and deep fried product. Â All in all I would say go to Pat's for fried chicken, it's what they are known for.
Out waitress was very accommodating , Â not much help with questions about the chicken fried steak, Â yes , another vegan child! Â She was very sweet and attentive.
P.S. Â Lee's chicken? Â I think not!
Do you love large breast? If so you need to visit Pat's Bar & Grill and have their fried chicken dinner. The breast they serve, are the largest I have ever seen and the accompanying pieces are impressive as well. Thick meaty thighs, curvaceous legs and wings that look as if the chicken has been pumping iron at the local gym. Big pieces, crispy flavorful coating and juicy meat.
I have been a fan of their fried chicken since the mid 80's. Yes, I have been coming here that long and the consistency of their quality product has remained the same. In my opinion, they serve the best chicken in the city. Their Onion Strings put those Bloom'n Onions at a steak house to blooming shame. They're served with horseradish sauce for an extra kick, but I like them plain with only the seasoned breading.
You can tell it is a true Irish Pub, the majority of the decor is green and in the back they have a clock counting down the time to Saint Patrick's Day to the second. The service is always friendly and a team effort. You'll never here "sorry, not my table" here, they want to make sure your experience is as enjoyable as it can be.
While I wouldn't necessarily seek out a place like Pat's on my own, I'm glad I ended up a few nights ago. I must say that I'm a pretty big fan.
After a sweaty, beer-fueled run, me and a group of about 20+ hit up Pat's for food and (what else?) more beer.
Since our group was so large, we were able to have the entire upstairs to ourselves. Nice! There was music (not sure if it was from a jukebox or pumped in from the speakers, but it was nice), and there was also a bar and a waitress. The downstairs bar has a better selection of beer/liquor, but it was easy to go down if we needed something more than bud light or bud select.
Anyway, back to the upstairs area. Our waitress was super friendly, and had no problem keeping track of all of our food orders. Did I mention that they serve food late? It was at least 10pm by the time I placed my order for chicken strips and fries.
Once my food came (which was pretty darn quick, considering the circumstances), I dug in.
WOW. Easily some of the best chicken strips I've ever had! The breading was like nothing I've ever had before. It was SUPER crispy and flavorful, and the meat was juicy and delicious. The fries were not remarkable, but the chicken more than made up for it.
As if things couldn't get any better, when the bill came, I thought there was an error for sure. My HUGE basket of chicken strips and fries (seriously, I had to split it with a friend) was less than 4 bucks. LESS THAN FOUR BUCKS! Crazytown.
I'm a big fan. I'll be back again, I'm sure.
just your friendly neighborhood dive nothing more nothing less. Â Bud Select $2.50
They've got two floors, we had a bday party for a friend there and they gave us the top floor to ourselves which was cool. Â It was on a Sat night too and the bar downstairs wasn't packed or anything. Â They had hot wings and some cheese dip which were both delish.
its on the south side of 40 opposite the zoo.
Friendly local bar in the heart of Dogtown. Â This place has a lot of atmosphere and heart, but never mind that -- I'm into it because it offers a great $10 special: 1 pound of chicken wings (teriyaki, buffalo, or chipotle) and a pitcher of beer for just ten bucks. Â I hear there are some other great deals throughout the day, too.
Definitely hit that deal up if you come by to watch a game or hang with friends. Â I recommend the teriyaki.
Service here was friendly and professional even though the atmosphere was a bit more laid back. Â The bartender and busfella were both goodnatured and made the visit even more pleasant. Â There were plenty of TVs up making the place ripe for watching October baseball.
Give it a shot! Â No reason not to.
It's a beautiful Labor Day and our lunch destination (a favorite, The Fountain on Locust) is closed. In our continued efforts of trying new places in the city we finally decide to give Pat's a try. I wish we hadn't. Service was aweful from the moment we sat down. The "waitress" came over and asked for our drink order. As we had just sat down we wanted a minute to think but order water while we did so. We never got the chance to order that as she was gone the second we said I don't know. It's one thing if the place is busy...she had 1 other table.
Fast forward at least 10 minutes while we wait, trying to get her attention as she chats at the bar. Finally order a burger for each of us. One a western with onion rings, the other with bacon and provel and a side of chips. Plus 2 sodas. Wait for the food was normal, but when it finally arrived I have fries, no chips in sight. Apologies are more like annoyances, but she promises the kitchen will get them and in the meantime she goes to refill my drink. This is a task that should take no more than a couple of minutes tops. Let's just say I'm glad I didn't wait to eat. 15 minutes!!! During which time she stood around the bar drinking a beer!!! I tried to get the attention of another waitress who looked directly at me, smiled and gave the impression that she would come over. She walked right past us.
Chips finally came after most of the food was gone. They were gigantic to say the least and pretty good. Burgers on the other hand were so so. Ordered medium well and they came pretty charred and mostly seasonless. The cheese and bacon were almost non-existent as was the bbq sauce. Altogether unimpressed and would be willing to return and try the fried chicken since it seems to be popular and looked pretty good...if it wasn't for the horrible service.
I try to go to a place twice before I review it. Â Needless to say this is the second time I've been to Pat's recently so I thought I'd review it now. Â Both times I ordered to go and both times I ordered their fried chicken dinner. Â
The original fried chicken I thought was plain and pretty flavorless. Â I was very disappointed with the taste and how dry and bland the chicken seemed to me. Â This is probably the most I've paid for also for 4 pieces of chicken in the area as well (about $9 with two sides, but this was because I swapped in mashed potatoes instead of coleslaw) but it was still in the same vicinity as Hodak's and Porter's. Â The fries were good and they served a lot of them and also their mashed potatoes were ACTUAL mashed potatoes! No boxed potatoes here! Â The service though was excellent. Â The bartender came and checked on me and apologized that my food wasn't quite ready yet. Â No worries, as I stopped in a few friends of mine were at the place so I talked with them while I waited. Â So the restaurant experience was pretty good, but the chicken itself was unsatisfying.
My second experience there was WAAAAY better. Â This time I decided to give the new Southern Spice a try. Â WOW! Leaps and bounds better than the original. Â The chicken had an awesome taste that was just right in my opinion. Â It was flavorful and I enjoyed every bite. Â Writing this review I'm kind of craving it some more but will restrain myself from having too much of a good thing as to not spoil it. Â
Yes, Pat's is a bit more expensive than Porter's and Hodak's (if you change sides from the standard fries and slaw) and it does take a bit longer (wait time was 30 minutes) but it is in my opinion worth every bite in the end.
The fried chicken here is fantastic. Â At $5.99 for a half of a chicken, this is a great deal. Â The only reason I did not give this a 5 star is that the ventilation is terrible and you will leave smelling like grease. Â
This is a basic bar/pub with good food. Â I have always had great service.
When going into a night of drinking, some greasy chicken is in order. Shared a chicken sandwich, burger, and some fries and they were tasty and reasonably priced. The beer was not as cheap as I would have hoped ($2.50 for AB bottles during the Cards game) Obviously not expensive, but I expected cheaper considering the atmosphere and the vibe of the bar. I will be back but it does not stand out to me as the best pub in the city
Review Source:I took a coworker to Pat's for lunch today. Â I have always known Pat's as a chicken establishment, but I have never stopped in for the fried chicken. Â Pat's is a small bar and grill located in Dogtown at the corner of Tamm and Clayton. Â There are a handful of tables and seating at the bar. Â On more than one occasion I have been to the upstairs section for a happy hour. Â
The restaurant itself smells like fresh hot chicken grease. Â I myself still smell like the very same grease having spent an hour in the restaurant. Â From what I can tell there are really only two bartenders/waitresses working the lunch shift.
Today's lunch special was 1/2 chicken with fries for $5. Â This is much better than the $8.99 advertised in the menu. Â Granted, the full menu special comes with a potato side and either soup, salad or coleslaw. Â The chicken itself is hot, fresh and bland. Â I added salt to mine. Â I wish more chicken joints would season their batter more. Â A little salt, a little pepper, maybe even some garlic powder.
Pat's chicken is okay, but it does not stick out when I think of good places to get fried chicken in St. Louis.
I just moved to St. Louis and Pat's was the first place I went. Â I've personally had the fried chicken with slaw and fries and the grilled chicken salad. Â The fried chicken really is pretty good. Â The slaw is great! Â It's vinegary rather than creamy and I can't get enough of it. Â The friend I was with both times ordered a bacon cheeseburger once and a chili burger the other time. Â He also got the onion rings. Â I didn't taste his burger but it looked really good. Â The onion rings are large and pretty tasty.
The staff seems really friendly and you get a sense that this place sees a lot of local and regular customers. Â I feel lucky to have moved into an apartment with such a great neighborhood pub nearby.
Pat's is a neighborhood bar that's accessible to all, with a great upstairs that's available for reservation (with bar, pool table, darts and Golden Tee).
For a long time, I've only sampled Pat's beverage selection. By the way, I think this is the only place where I've had an "Irish Car Bomb"... If I remember correctly, I liked it.
I've recently discovered that Pat's has great pub fare. The fried chicken is particularly tasty, but greasy.
I don't care. I like greasy food some times. Especially after a "Car Bomb" or three.
The atmosphere is relaxing and the service is nice. You can always strike up a conversation about the Cardinals with one of their regulars, or one of the concrete turtles across the street.
I love Pat's! Â Pat's is an Irish restaurant/pub that sells fried up American food. Â It was founded by an Irishman over 60 years ago, but at this point, it's more of a Dogtown neighborhood hangout. Â Very casual & very laid back. Â
They have entertainment occasionally, but usually it's the jukebox upstairs in "The Roost." Â The Roost is brighter and cheerier than the restaurant downstairs. Â It's a hoot and you can usually have a laugh with Pat's Irish Hurling team who hang out after game/practice.
Any time I plan a winery trip or day trip, we usually start out at Pat's. Â Joe gives us a deal where everyone on the bus can get a full buffet style breakfast for $5 per person. Â Just call ahead to organize.
Speaking of breakfast, Pat's has a weekday "Johnny Rabbit" special that is $2. Â This is a FULL breakfast platter for $2. Â Their weekend breakfast is not as cheap , but it's pretty reasonable.
Pat's Bar and Grill is a great little place located along the side of Forest Park in Dogtown. My friends and I enjoy going there for a little drink. Most of the time we go there and enjoy a nice cold beer where we sit and just talk among ourselves, joking around about a little bit of everything.
If I get something to eat there I usually get a BLT. Their BLT is a classic one. It has all that you need and what the sandwich is named for. You never have to wait long for anything, though everything is made fresh. My friends always enjoy their burgers they seem to love the way in which they cook it. I would highly recommend it.
