NOT GOOD AT ALL!!! The dining room is filthy and seemed to be suffering from a very serious identity crisis, the food was either completely undercooked or totally over cooked. Â I had the falafel and a gyro sandwich. Â The falafel came out looking burned on the outside and it was still completely raw inside and tasted really funny... I didn't bother to finish them. My gyro was either prepared and then sat for a while or was microwaved, either way it was nasty and again I didn't bother finish it. Â
The other problem is that I showed up and the only guy there was no where to be found for a while, so I sat down and waited for service while listening to the musically challenged techno he had full volume in the back where I imagined he was probably fist pumping his life away instead of working to keep his business competitive with the far better options located only steps away from the front door.
I DO NOT RECCOMMEND, bad service, filthy dining room, lack luster service, weird guido dance music and overly underwhelming food. If that was the food I ordered from the menu, I'd hate to see what their buffet is like.
I came here with my roommate for dinner last night. The place is a bit confusing as there are two sides of the restaurant, one for take out orders and one for eat-in orders. The door to the eat-in side was locked. We were told to walk through the kitchen to get to that side. The eat-in side has decent ambiance, but it was definitely strange to walk through the kitchen to get there.
The guy in the kitchen was, I think, the only one working at the time. Service was a little slow but not unreasonably so.
We shared an appetizer of baba ganoush. It tasted like plain hummus to me, but whatever. I got the kufta dinner, with veggies and pasta salad. The pasta salad, while on the oily side, was very good. The kufta was spicier than I anticipated, but was delicious. I'm not sure if the amount of food was worth the price for the dinner, so next time I may stick to the sandwich part of the menu.
So an ok experience, of ok food, at an ok place. I give it an A-OK.
Overall 1 star, the food itself was 2 stars.
The owner Cal is very sketchy, indeed. I came in there at lunch with vouchers I bought from http://halfoffdeals.com. I had bought $50 worth for about $28. It is supposed to be as good as cash, but he denied the use of them for the buffet. He said I could use some of the vouchers for dinner if I spent a certain amount. So, a month later, I come hobbling in on crutches (1 week after knee surgery) for dinner. As we sit down to order and I pull out the vouchers, Cal then says he is no longer honoring them at all, and I should just call them and get a refund. I told him I also have a http://restaurant.com certificate, and he says he will not be honoring those as well. I politely left the establishment after he gave me the 1000 reasons why he won't honor the discounts.
After talking to Cal extensively both times, I really got the vibe that he was trying to BS his way out of all the things he used to advertise his restaurant, which includes the discounts offered. Looking at all the ads in his menu, it looks he got his menus free, too. If he does not honor the avenue in which he attracts patrons, he does not honor the patrons. I will not mess with this place again.
As far as the food, I had the buffet 2 times before the above incidents, and the food is average or below, and the quality varies. Last time I was there, the hummus was really salty, and the pita was cold and stale. The variety on the buffet was adequate, but obviously quality really matters. I worked 5 blocks away from the Andersonville area in Chicago, and there were a myriad of mediterranean/persian places. Pita Hut does not come close to the worst place in that area.
In conclusion, Pita Hut is pretty bad. Don't go there.
Bad service ruined an otherwise good meal. First time going there, so when I ordered and even pointed to the meal I wanted I thought he got the order right. Well apparently you must make it very clear when going for dinner you want the dinner not the sandwich. We were the only customers so decided to eat what he brought us. I felt bad sending food back I knew he would have to toss since it was a small place. Apps were good and sandwiches were ok. When it came time to pay we tried to use "coupons" I had purchased online. It turns out there is a small sign posted in the back of the room that says you must present these before ordering. Apparently there are restrictions and we ended up not being able to use them. Had he taken the order correctly everything would have been ok, but he told us it was our fault. Even though one item he said we ordered had changed names on the new menu, and he was going by the old menu it was still our fault. I understand restrictions on "coupons" and why they have them. It is different when there is a misunderstanding where the customer is not at fault, and it was the owner who can easily accept it if he wanted. Just left a bad impression of the whole experience, but other than the service the food was good. Still can't believe he would lose a potential repeat customer over something simple.
Review Source:The food here may be great, but I'll never know because of the poor service.
I went in for lunch with my girlfriend a few weeks ago around 1pm. Then a man who I believe to be the owner came to take our order. Â We had just started looking over the menu, and he suggested the buffet; we said we weren't big eaters, & wanted to see what the menu items were, as it was our first time; he said a little more forcefully that the buffet was the best deal.
We said thanks, give us a minute please, and he left. We decided we were each going to order a sandwich. He returned and asked if we had decided about the buffet or not. We gave him our non-buffet order, and he looked disappointed.
He then noticed that my friend had a stainless-steel bottle on the table, and told her she couldn't have that in the restaurant. She told him it only contained water (she carries it everywhere), but he said she had to take it away. I suggested we could put it safely under the table. She asked if she could have some tap water from his restaurant instead; he went away and came back with a plastic bottle of water, the very thing she tries to avoid (environmentally).
She said she didn't feel very comfortable eating there; I told the man, "I think we're going to have to leave." Then he started yelling at us and waving his arms, telling us to "get the hell out" of his store. We did.
My family went there for lunch one weekday because they had a "buffet". Â You actually had a choice between doing a one trip buffet for a certain price or return-as-many-times-as-you-want buffet for a little more money. Both my wife and I did the one-trip and we thought the food was very good for the price. The gyros were flavorful and the Tzitki (sp?) was very good. Â The inside of the restaurant was nothing to rave about as they just had a few tables on this inside. If you have lots of kids, make sure you understand that when we went...there was only one highchair for the restaurant. This may cause a problem if multiple families are in there. Otherwise, I would recommend this to friends and I would go back again.
