I usually do not like buffets. Being from New York City I am kind of particular about buffets because usually I find that the food is often old or cold. This place really amazed me, I did happen to pick one or two things that were cold but definitely not old. The fried shrimp were crispy and warm, Pork fried rice was very moist And they even had barbecue roast pork loin, And because it was so thick it was a little cold But because it taste so good I actually ate it and was satisfied. The only thing lacking here was the desert line up. For instance there were only two selections of cake, But maybe about eight selections of dried cookies. Other than that the food was excellent the price even better!
Review Source:We planned to stop at a different place down the street, and that place was closed. Â Saw the cool sign, and decided to give it a shot, we didn't even check Yelp before hand.
We walked around to the front and came in through the main dinning room, I guess the entrance is the door in back by the parking lot, with lots of stairs.  There were lots of cars in the lot so we expected it to be crowded, but the place is huge, plenty of room, we were seated right away.
Started with the clam chowder, it was good, not spectacular.  Lots of big pieces of potato and clams.
The Oyster Rockefeller was really good, just seasoned spinach, oyster and a dollop of sauce on top. Â
My wife had the walleye and it was one of the best I ever had tasted.  I had the seafood in Filo dough, it was wonderful.  Lots of fresh tasting seafood in a  mild creme sauce that did not bury the flavor of the seafood.
The waiter we had was very attentive and kept my beer glass full as well as my wife's coffee cup filled.
If we were ever in Harrisburg again I would go to Progress Grill again.
If I could give 1.5 stars, I might consider it. Â This place reminds me of a Vegas lounge from the 70's, and definitely caters to a demographic well acquianted with the flamingo lounge ala the Godfather part II. Â The space is dark, dense, choppy and gloomy. Â The wait staff is fine - think roadside diner - and the food is marginal at best: over cooked, over sauced, over everything. Â Bring the grand parents here if they are waxing nostalgic, but avoid otherwise.
Review Source:Visited for the first time after living in Harrisburg for 2 years. This restaurant was a nice surprise. Not only is it a local place but the food and service was excellent. The prices are a little high but there portion sizes more than make up for it.
They have not only a large menu of choices but also an extensive wine list. I was surprised to see how busy they were on a Sat night but now I know why.
Although some patrons were dressed casually there were also many that were dressed up and there for a special occasion. I liked the ambience of the entire place and the crowd was a little older which to me just tells ya the food is good.
I would return again and recommend to all my friends.
Progress Grill is great. I live in Seattle and I come visit relatives in Harrisburg several times a year. I always ask to go to Progress Grill. I do not like chain restaurants and am rather picky. The broiled crab cakes are delish. While I am in my late 20's, this place has a bit of an older crowd and is a bit pricey, so I think people like to come here for a special occasions. The service has always been great. Entrees come with two sides of your choice. The decor is lacking and located in a older building, but that does not deter me. I recommend Progress Grill.
Review Source:This place is in the xxx rated part of town. Â Parking was not that great, uneven surfaces and strange layout. Â As you walk in, it feels like a cheap old hotel. Â The waitress was professional, but not overly friendly, I get the feeling they like to push cocktail sales. Â $24 fried seafood platter was not good, the coating was greasy with no taste, the only thing I liked was the crab cake, which does have a strong pepper taste. The creamy seafood with Phyllo was tasty. Â I would equate this to an average diner. Â Their clients are older people that have come to this place for years. Â I have to get them credit for a very clean bathroom.
Review Source:This was by far the best dinner we've had in Harrisburg in quite some time. Â Broiled crab cakes and rack of lamb were the best. Â Dinner rolls are perfect. Â Dorri and Tim are the greatest bar staff ever!!! Â You want to enjoy the great drinks and service and eat at the bar for a fun and casual night!! Â Food and drinks and service were the best.
Review Source:One of my favorite local restaurants!
If you don't know about the place, it is easy to drive right by and not think twice about it. The outside decor and sign just scream 'run-down diner' but it is far from that.
The atmosphere inside is an old school semi-fancy, low lit, casual, friendly, slightly romantic feel to it, with a pinch of 1970's mafioso restaurant thrown in for good measure. The staff is very friendly.
The experience is great, but what really keeps us coming back is the food. I'm shocked that so many on here have had bad experiences with the food, but our family absolutely loves it and hasn't had a bad meal yet. My most frequent dinner choice is the 'Poor Man's Surf and Turf' which is a big steak and a big crabcake... and by the way, the crabcakes are some of the best in the area.
The prices are medium to high, but for the portion and quality of food you get, I don't think the prices are too far off from similar places.
Overall the food was blah.  I had high hopes as the restaurant looked the part for quality.  Nice atmosphere, professional wait staff, linen table cloths, great menu choices and fresh bread. BUT... The Greek salad sat in the dressing too long and was sort of covered up by the cheese sprinkled on the top.  The philo  seafood Chesapeake dish was Cold in the middle!  Yuck. AND... the description of seafood on the menu did not match the seafood that actually arrived in what was served.  Tiny TOUGH scallops...said lobster but hmmm... didn't see any.  Shrimp?...didn't see that either.  Had to send mine back to be heated and it came back looking like a rich soup of a mess.  I ate it but was sorry I ordered this and wasted my calories on this rich dish.  I opted for the Brussels sprouts side dish and again...YUCK...way over cooked.  If this is one of the better restaurants in Harrisburg then next time I visit I will stick with Outback!  The other three in my party all thought their meals were below fair as well.  One said the lobster was probably the worst she had, the other said her Tuna was tasteless, and actually the third said her steak was good.
Review Source:Excellent meal! Realize it's a steak place but everyone in my party ordered seafood & weren't disappointed. The mixed seafood in pastry was more than I could eat & the crab & scallops ala Chesapeake was outstanding. The only complaint was the scallops in the pastry dish were a bit chewy. Great service! Love the old school ambiance. Would definitely go back again next time I'm in Harrisburg.
Review Source:We have been going for years and love it every time. The "poor mans surf and turf" is the best! We were their for our wedding anniversary and casually mentioned it to the greeter. They brought out delicious cake as a surprise and that really made or night. The owner also took time to congratulate us.
Review Source:Four of us went for dinner on a recent Saturday evening. Had a reservation and were seated promptly. Â Decor looks like it has been around forever but it's clean and the lighting is low. Waitress was overly friendly from the start and morphed into obnoxious as things progressed. She did nothing to make dinner pleasant and it was clear that they wanted to get people in and out asap. The soup came before I had finished my first drink. The salads quickly followed. I mentioned the pace to the waitress and her response was " that's how we do things around here". Sheesh!
Seafood bisque was good. Stuffed mushroom caps were very bland.
Salads were literally smothered in chopped celery, dressings had little flavor.
Seafood combo in pastry was a loser. Filet mignon ordered medium rare was very rare (think raw). Salmon was ok but little seasoning. Clearly they did not want us to stay for dessert but we ordered 2 and shared. Nothing special here. Â
This place is noisy, the wait staff is pushy and the very average food is WAY overpriced. Why would I ever return?
Writing this review (sort-of-kind-of) tears me up inside--growing up in Harrisburg, better dining has only been progressing over the past five or six years--when I was much younger, the only real restaurants in Harrisburg included the Peachtree and Progress Grill (I'm sure there were one or two more, but these were the "places to go" if you asked around).
So, fond memories aside, I thought I would see what the Progress Grill really had to offer as an adult (e.g., one who eats more than chicken fingers and grilled cheese).
The pros:
-This place literally has not changed since it's opened. I feel like I'm in an old hotel restaurant, or possibly a Rotary Club meeting. It's a good thing, though, because it reminds me of what kind of city Harrisburg is.
-If you're from Harrisburg, you'll always see someone you know (I ran into my alma mater's principle, who has since retired).
-The service is incredible, and all of the servers know everyone or know someone who knows everyone. You'll always receive a smile, and any dish can be altered to your convenience without any problems.
-They always have a nice wine list.
The con:
-The food is good for a buttery home-style higher-end meal (if you don't feel like cooking yourself a steak or making your own bisque); however, it is super overpriced. SUPER OVERPRICED. The cheapest entree looked to be the single broiled crabcake ($15), which is just what it says--a single, broiled crabcake. You get two sides (which range from garden or greek salad to french fries to vegetables), but $15 for a single-serving crabcake on a plate is surreal to me. Most entrees were in the $20-$25 range, with the most expensive being a lobster tail for about $30.
I'm giving Progress Grill 3 stars--it's nostalgic, it's friendly, the taste satisfies if you're looking for this kind of meal, but the pricing is unbelievably high for what you actually receive.
Don't get Progress Grill, never did. Â I think they are good at what they are - a slightly-nicer meat and potatoes place that is consistent and safe. Â Food is average, although everything is heavily buttered/oiled/salted which no doubt adds flavor. Â Decor - think run down asssisted living facility. Â And with lots of senior patrons they usually fit right into the setting. Â
It's a step above for Harrisburg, but a step below if you branch out a bit. Â It's a Harrisburg institution for sure.
Doesn't look like much from the outside, but this probably one of the better restaurants in Harrisburg. Â Formal setting inside. Â A little bit on the pricey side, but not too bad. Â I highly recommend the Prime Rib, but most meals are very good.
Reservations are a must if you come during busy dinner hours or on a holiday.
So many great memories here! Â Just don't do what I did my first time around and judge this place by the outside. Â It rocks! Â They serve some of the best pancakes in the city! Â The rest of the food is good. Â And they know how to serve a side of scrapple! Â It's like being on the set of ALICE :-) Â You get down-home waitresses and good grub for cheap! Â Stop on in!
Review Source:Ok, so it's the best prime rib my husband has had in his life...but I don't eat meat, so from Pescetarian's point of view this place is not all it's talked up to be.
It's a very old building with a super cool retro sign out front, but the inside reminds me of what a fancy restaurant would look like in the eighties. I wasn't feeling the mauve and cheesy floral patterns.
They keep the inside unnecessarily dark, one assumes it is so their patrons cannot see the ridiculous prices. I had the seafood casserole in phyllo ($20), which sounded delicious, but when I bit into it the shrimp was still cold and the rest of the seafood tasted as if it had spoiled.
I was so hungry and disappointed, I told the waitress and she brought me a free dessert ($5). So initially I ended up spending $15 for something I didn't eat.
Yeah, so bottom line; if you eat meat this place is great, but if you don't try not to get suckered into going here.
We go here for special occasions. I get the steaks....very good and large. My better half always gets the crabcakes, who she says is the best in town. The place is a little dumpy looking on the outside and would be nice if they remodeled about bit but I guess they figure why bother..the people still keep coming!! Overall highly rated at 4 stars...reserving 5 for the appearance and price, which is a little on the high side but not too bad. (do not get the veal, save this for an Italian restaurant...it was just ok)..
edit 9/12. They remodeled and looks nice. I am puzzled by another review saying this is in the XXX part of town. Not sure what that means, its not even remotely close to the nude bars/x rated video stores miles up the road. Its not even in a bad part of town and there is plenty of parking.
Talk about looks being deceiving ... I was pleasantly surprised at the inside as I thought the outside looked a little diner-ish. Â First thought is that service was impeccable with a pretty large waitstaff. Â Dress code on patrons ranged from casual to one couple who were definitely dressed up. Â Place is dimly lit which could be construed as romantic.
The salads were good, both the Greek and the garden. Â The bleu cheese dressing was yummy and the bread was good (though it would be better if it was warmer). Â The mozarella sticks were average.
I had the Porterhouse which was gigantic and tasty. Â I generally like a better marbled steak but this was definitely good and worth the $22 as it came with salad and side (baked potato in my case). Â My family members had the seafood a la chemise, crab cakes and rack of lamb and all commented favorably with the possible exception of the seafood dish as it was very rich. Â But I had a bite and it was good ... kind of like a seafood pot pie in a puff pastry and yes, it was definitely rich.
All in all, an upscale place for dinner. Â Since I was with family for an early dinner and they were driving back to NJ, we didn't have drinks. Â But I have heard they make a great martini here which I will try the next time.
PostScript on the Porterhouse: Â This must have been a big steak because I gave the T-bone to my dog and he pranced around the apartment looking cute as anything with a bone that was almost larger than him!!!
Ahhh... the Progress Grill. Â A place unchanged and unbothered by the changing times, where good meat, good seafood, and good liquor all converge in a pleasant, low-ambiance environment.
I've been coming here for quite some time, quite often when I was a kid and now about once a year when I'm back to visit the family. Â The meat is consistently good, the crabcakes consistently fabulous. Â The dolma - get them warm - are really good, too. Â The cocktails - or, more accurately, the beefeater martinis, since that's all I ever get - are well mixed; though sometimes the glasses aren't chilled beforehand. Â The wine list is reasonable for the area - I especially like the Conn Creek cab with my steak - but suffers in comparison to those you'd see in larger metros. Â
The service is consistent and attentive. Â They've all been working there for a while and always recognize us when we arrive. Â That's definitely a plus.
There's ample parking and ample seating, we've never had to wait for a place to sit.
All in all, a great place - if you're visiting the area give it a shot if you like hearty food with some sophistication and a good, friendly place to have a meal.
