I dined at Public House 49 for the first time on Wednesday. I do have to say that I was a bit skeptical at first - seeing half painted walls and paper menus. However, by the end of the meal, I no longer had doubts.  The food was excellent, with great size portions. And the Prix Fixe menu had a variety of selection. There were a few of us with my party and we ordered from both menus - and there certainly was no complaints. The service was outstanding and very attentive. I only noticed two servers for quite a large busy dining room, but they worked very well together, cleaning and paying attention to the tables. They were a great team. Our waiter had quite a personality and talked to us about the (undergoing) renovations and the newly expanded menu. He told us a bit about future plans with the restaurant. I do hope that all works out and that there is a celebration of sorts. I had walked by this restaurant so many times without ever stopping it, and I certainly won't be doing that again. It is a restaurant not to be missed and more people need to know! I will be back!

A friend and I came here on a Monday night for a post-dinner drink.  Loved the chill atmosphere and fun lounge chairs.  Will definitely be coming back again.

Four stars for the service on Mother's Day. There was a female manager/owner (?) who was very courteous and friendly. She greeted us at the door with smiles and recommendations. They also gave the mom in the group a nice potted flower to take home and offered a free glass of mimosa or sangria to the ladies. Our group of four all had the burger and fries. They undercooked the burger so that it was almost rare (even the person who ordered well-done had a medium burger) but at least it was still juicy. The fries were a little too greasy for me but still pretty good.

Apparently some administrative personnel or chefs have changed, from my experience.  My family and I dined at Public House 49 on a weeknight and were looking forward to our usual go-to's to avoid cooking at home -- especially the onion soup with roast beef slices -- but it is no longer offered on the menu!  We also had an appetizer at the bar while waiting for the rest of our party and noticed the creative bar menu specials were gone.  The items we did get were poorly cooked (Ruben sandwiches were so tough they could barely be chewed and steak in my wedge salad was cooked med-rare as requested but had an overpowering dirty grill taste.  Mac and Cheese is still amazing though.

Good music and good amount of space.. Love the no cover charge and the free coat check in. The drinks are average price.
It's a good place to go with a date or a small group of friends.

Had dinner and drinks there Saturday night ,,, Food was ok but pricey as hell small portions too. had a issue with the bartender at the end of the night he tried to charge my friend  for 7 beers when  he asked for 3, it ended up being a really big deal we were disrespected and not very happy with the mngmt .

This place should be a 2.5 stars but the great service put it up to 3 stars.  Had dinner prior to a show at the Patchogue Theatre.  It was just OK.  The rolls were stale or over microwaved.  We had the squid with Preserved lemon.  The panko was not fried sufficiently and was not crispy.  The shrimp in lettuce wrap was nothing special but a fried shrimp in iceberg lettuce.  The baked Mac and cheese was the most outstanding dish of the evening. The Continental Burger was just too ambitious and unmanageable unless you used a Knife and fork.  The flavor profile was very confused.   The  service was very good and the atmosphere was nice.

I've been here in the past and it was much better. I'm not to sure if management has changed here or if they just don't care anymore. Recently came in for lunch and to my discovery found myself with a freezer burnt cheeseburger with a stale bun. When I asked them to change my meal they picked the plate up and walked back into the kitchen and said nothing. I wont be returning here for any dining what so ever. A few weeks later a few friends wanted to go to Public House for a few drinks, I figured how bad could they mess this up? After hours.. Over zealous bouncers that drive business away, overcrowding causing safety issues, impossible to get to the bar for a drink, and terrible music. Don't waste your time, head down to the Brick House!

I usually go to Public House for happy hour on a Friday, and have had some pretty fun times here. Let me say though, that I have never been here for the late night club-like element so I wont be including that as part of my review.

Friday nights at around the happy hour time (3-7 pm), there is live music and a pretty good sized crowd, but not overwhelming crowded which I like a lot. I'm not one for crowded bars or any place for that matter. Public House 49 also, in my experience of being a somewhat frequent happy hour-goer, has some of the best happy hour deals. Deals that above the wine and beer norms spans to cocktails and specialty drinks.

I usually order wine, but occasionally go for a specialty drink. The first time I ordered one of these said drinks it was delicious! It was a strawberry and ginger mojito. It was so good that I ordered 2 more!  However, the next time I came in and ordered the drink, it was so poorly made that I couldn't even drink it. It was very strong, yet watery at the same time and overfilled with way too much shredded mint leaves. I pushed the drink aside and asked for my usual Riesling. They were very nice about it and did take the drink off of  the bill. It sometimes can be hit or miss with the bartenders. That is the only thing stopping me from giving it 5 stars. But on another up note,  I also need to add that they hands down make the best apple martini! So good that they're in fact dangerous! Well, for me and my best friend at least. Some of the best, but hard to recall every detail, nights have been due to one too many Public House appletinis. () :)

Now, the food at Public House 49 has always been to my liking. The very first meal I ever tried was one of my all time favorite home cooked meals, so I was dying to see if they could pull it off. The meal was pot roast and they did pull it off with an eclectic  twist!  There was a good portion of medium sliced, tender and juicy roast beef slices, perfectly cooked ans seasoned  julienne carrots, on top of fluffy bed of buttery sour cream and garlic mashed potatoes and a side of my main staple in a pot roast dinner, red cabbage. I was hooked by presentation, quantity and quality of all the ingredients.

I also highly recommend the fried calamari appetizer as well.

I could go on and on...but I won't,  because you need to go and formulate your own opinion!

My husband and I had dinner at Public House 49 tonight and had an outstanding dining experience.  We were fortunate to experience the first night of a brand new menu.  My husband had an excellent homemade Bucatini Bolognese which was fresh and meaty and so flavorful. My duck breast was simply divine.  It was far and away the most delicious and creative duck I've ever had.  We finished the meal with a luscious chocolate dessert called a "ring ding".    The service was top notch. Our waiter, Eric, was very friendly and attentive, and the entire staff was very pleasant.   The atmosphere was very comfortable and meals reasonably priced.  We will be frequenting this eatery on a regular basis and look forward to sampling other menu items.

I had a party here for my mother's 50th on a Saturday afternoon. The manager at Public House was incredibly accommodating. The 12 of us had a 3 course meal which was fantastic! The calamari is superb with the garlic aioli dipping sauce. Our waitress was great, and my pumpkin martini was yummy and rich. I will continue to come back for the service and food!

Update for 2012 -- in short, changes for the worse.

MENU:  Pigs on Horseback, bacon infused popcorn, mustard/cheese pretzel dip are all GONE!  The menu now contains unoriginal items like mussels, wings, etc.  Sad to see innovative stuff disappear.  The wings only come in Sweet Chili with a blue cheese sauce.  No hot wings, no Teriyaki, no BBQ.  C'mon, it's freaking SAUCE, you can't carry more than 1 variety?  The blue cheese dip which came with them was good, but without any celery or carrots to go with them, you have to dip the sweet wings in the sauce, which does not play well together.

TV MANAGEMENT:  I came in to see a particular game and while the bar area has 6 BIG beautiful TV's, the management of the screens was atrocious.  All 4 screens above the bar were playing a single game (WHY put the game on 2 screens that are LITERALLY right next to each other?? Then put them on the next 2 screens as well?) while my game was playing on the TERRIBLE overhead projector at the end of the room and another TV right next to that.  These are in an area only with large tables, and while I don't like to be a pain, my request that they put the Saints on one of the TV's was completely ignored by the management - who was using a walkie talkie to communicate with whoever is in charge of the channels.  Must be confusing for the staff to use - I've seen people dock aircraft carriers more efficiently.  Very sad setup.  The exact opposite of my former experience here where the bartender was able to independently manage the screens and meet my simple need.
It's still LOUD as HELL in here, even when it's not busy.  The crappy acoustic cover music they play doesn't help out if you're trying to watch the game either.  Turn the music down - or better yet, limit it to the dining room and put the damn sound for the game ON.  Nothing like trying to read the lips of refs when they're explaining a call to the camera.

The service staff was friendly and prompt, although I didn't get an itemized bill for my food & drinks - just the total at the end.  They ran out of the "Football Special" (which was just normal wings) and gave me lollipop-style wings instead - how do you run out of wings at 4:00 on a Football Sunday?  Oh, by not preparing appropriately.  I think a lot of the problems here stem from poor management and not the staff itself.

    2 strikes and you're OUT Pubic House.  I don't give 3.

I enjoyed this place tremendously.  I went with 3 appetizers which were delicious.  The atmosphere was very inviting and loved the diversity.  Had a great time.  Pulled pork nachos, the best!

This place is normally a mediocre over-crowded, super loud, fight prone bar with 3:1 guy girl ratio that is typical of LI nightlife.  I have been here more times that I would like to admit and loathe when my friends tell me to meet them there.  Never knew what the restaurant was like, it was filled with people dancing all the time by the time I went there.

However recently I did a couple like thing and actually ate dinner there.  What a rip off!  They are charging higher end restaurant prices. The food was not really that good and like I said quite expensive for such a place.

I am not sure what they are aiming for here.  They seem to be trying to run a classy restaurant while running a bar/club/etc.  Torn between typical sad LI nightlife and classy.  Not sure it works.

I went there on a Friday night after walking around Alive at Five.  The original plan had been to go to Bobbique, but after seeing this restaurant we decided to give somewhere new a try.

The bar was packed with a mixture of people, from 20's on up.  There was a live musician playing and they had tv's with the olympic on.  There was a huge fully-stocked bar and good beer choices on tap.  This definitely seems like a bar atmosphere I would want to check out again.  Relaxed and no one getting out-of-hand.  After we got our drinks, we decided to grab a table.

The dining room side and outdoor patio were busy, which I always take as a good sign.  Our waitress was friendly and attentive, but not in an overbearing way. There was also a fully-stocked bar in the dining area, which seems like a smart set-up.

My husband and I started with their lobster roll sliders.  The plate had 3 larger "sliders." The entire time we ate, all we could exclaim was "Oh my good, so good!"  They were delicious.  There was real, identifiable, big pieces of lobster with just the right balance of mayonnaise and chopped avocado.  I find more often then not, lobster at restaurants tends to be disappointing, and this most definitely was not!  The slider also had a slice of bacon which added a nice smokey and saltiness to the slider.  The bread was an artisan-style hot dog roll, but it was toasted perfectly so that you could feel the crunch of the toasted side without tearing up your mouth.  The entire combination was out-of-this-world!  I would highly recommend it.

I had the ribeye steak sandwich with onions and pepper.  The veggies were cooked perfectly and the steak was tender and flavorful.  I substituted blue cheese for swiss and that added a great little bite to it.  The sandwich was on a flatbread that held up well for a substantial-sized sandwich.  It was served with their tater tots, which were not the kind we usually think of.  They're more like friend potato pancakes about the size of a silver dollar.  They were good and very filling.

My husband had the cubano sandwich.  It was really good and the sandwich was huge.  It was also served with homemade fries, which are always much better than frozen. I think they should add an extra little something by seasoning them with garlic and rosemary. It would dress them up.

For dessert we had the s'mores creme brûlée.  We enjoyed it, but I would recommend 2 changes.  The first is that the custard be warmed up when it's served and the second being that they put toasted marshmallows on top.  There was no real clear connection to it being a s'more besides the chocolate chips.  It was still good, but could use a little improvement.

This place was completely reasonable considering we had 4 drinks, appetizer, 2 meals, and dessert.  The quality of food is much greater than a lot of other restaurants we would pay the same amount for.  I can't wait to go back and try other things off their menu.  I will be recommending this place to all my friends.

Went here because Pera Bell Food Bar was too full. In fact, it was packed, while this place was dead empty only two doors down. This should have been a raging red flag, but we were hungry, road-weary and searching for sustenance. Rarely a good combination for decision-making.

The staff was friendly yet inattentive. Everything took forever, even though the place was a veritable ghost town. It took half-an-hour or longer to get a couple of burgers, which were over-cooked. The mac & cheese, which was raved about was sub-par, to say the least. We asked for a dessert menu and they went to the back and scribbled something on receipt paper for 10 minutes - no exaggeration - and came back to the bar, served several other customers and then, upon our prompting, pulled out a crumpled paper and recited the selections of the day. While they sounded appealing, we opted not to participate on account that it might likely take another half-an-hour.

True to form, getting our check and paying our tab was also a protracted process.

We should have waited for 25 minutes next door. We'd be home by now.

    Will not be returning.

Been here twice. The first time the crowd was kind of lame & un-enthused. 2nd time: the bouncers claimed my ID was fake and started to give me attitude about getting in. I refused to leave until another bouncer would also check my LEGAL ID. While I was freezing in the cold, the jackass of a bouncer was letting people in without checking everyone's IDs! He let some kid in with a Utah license who couldn't verify all the info on it (but he gave me a hard time?!?) GET AN ID SCANNER (& a brain) & then tell me my IDs fake, b's.

Have been here before for drinks, but was our first time having dinner at Public House 49.  We were the only ones in the dining room, and there were just a handful of people at the bar, so we were a little hesitant.  However, to our surprise the food was very good and the service excellent.

The Public Burger is great.  It's big, juicy and topped with Short Rib!  I opted for the Tater-Tots instead of the fries, but wish I had gone with the Sweet Potato Fries instead.  My wife's Chicken Milanese Caesar Salad was also very good.

All in all, a good meal at reasonable prices.  Worth a shot.

I was surprised to see so many mediocre and negative reviews about this place because it's one of our favorite restaurants. I guess most of the reviews are talking about the bar scene which I can't really comment on.

The food here is great. A menu that's actually interesting and not the same old crappy uninspired food that's so typical of LI dining.

The short ribs are about the best I've ever had. If you're craving a burger, the public burger has short ribs on top of it! Really good but so much beef. The pigs on horseback appetizer is great and it's not something you find in a lot of places (at least not in this area). They had a Chicken Milanese that was incredible, served with spätzle, but as of our most recent visit it was off the menu (with a Chicken Milanese salad instead). Hopefully they bring that back.

They are definitely a go-to restaurant for us. Don't let the bar scene reviews scare you away if you're looking for a good dinner.

EDIT: This place has slowly gone downhill. A lot of the good food items were taken off the menu (the ones that are left are poorly executed) and service basically went to shit.

My last experience here has rendered the place dead to me. We went in with a large group of people (10+). The service was very bad; I waited 20 minutes to order a refill on a soda (which never came), and our waitress walked past the table (never looking at us) at least 3 times in that time span.

Food came out wrong, and by the time someone could ask about it other people were done eating. The french fries were way overcooked, it was just bad.

The kicker though, was when the manager came over and asked us to leave, because we were there too long (the main reason we were there for so long was the slow service). She said there was another party coming.

We had a reservation too, it's not like we were walk-ins. She said "as you know, most restaurants don't even take reservations on a weekend." WTF?!

We tried to email the restaurant later to complain, and the response was a backhanded "apology" and basically further efforts to convince us how were in the wrong. Comments left on their Facebook page about the experience were promptly deleted.

    I'll never go here again.

I went here for happy hour on a Monday night. The bar was pretty dead, about four other patrons not including the staff were there and myself and a friend of mine. Drinks were half price but food was not. Ok to go for a night cap or a date but otherwise not much going on unless your into reuniting with your high school at the end of the week with them. I had their mussels which were pretty good and tried this grape martini which was really yummy. The bartenders are young but nice to talk to. I def would not pay full price for a drink there or go back for food, but not a bad find.

While the restaurant isn't anything to write home about, I really enjoy the bar atmosphere at the public house. They have a good happy hour deal--half price on all drinks--and overall, the clientele isn't trashy. They do have some silly rules about attire, however, that does help minimize dirt bags.

The first bad experience at this place was when they wouldn't let my husband into the bar because he was wearing a Yankees jersey even though they had a Yankees game playing on the tv. Frankly, that's ridiculous. It's not as if it's a hot club scene or particularly upscale crowd. But we'd heard the food was good, so I convinced him to go back.

The menu made everything seem great. Lots of interesting choices. But the execution left a lot to be desired. We started with the pulled pork nachos, which were actually very good. Nice fresh avocado and jalapenos. The pork itself was a little underflavored, but it was good overall. I ordered the red wine braised short ribs, which came with red cabbage and a parsnip puree. In this case, the flavors were a bit heavy handed and overly sweet. The short ribs themselves were passable. Well, two of them were - the first one I cut into was tough and a little dry and I started thinking, "Yikes, I've made much better myself." I abandoned the first one for the second and found it quite a lot better. But honestly, the sweet flavor of everything was just overwhelming in general.

My husband ordered the Thursday special, which was prime rib with lobster. He wasn't enthusiastic about what arrived, but it was okay until he got to the lobster. The tail was okay. The claws were not quite cooked (greyish and gelatinous in places). The waitress told us lobster is "kind of a new thing" for them, so I don't recommend it until they get it down.

We're locals, and there are several much better restaurants in Patchogue. I don't think we'll go back.

I can't really comment on the bar scene, but I think the food is pretty good as far as the whole gastropub vibe they're going for...meaning don't get the pasta or Italian-inspired dishes because they're nothing to write home about.  In my many visits here I've had the fish & chips, shepherds pie, mac & cheese, and steak sandwich and they were all pretty delicious.  The mac & cheese in particular is almost a sexual experience, though very rich, so share with friends.

Went tonight with my fiancee and another couple for dinner...service was decent...we were sitting on the dining room side, and I was quite shocked to hear from our waitress that there was no beer list available unless i wanted to walk over to the bar area & read the one on the wall, dumb move in my opinion, having to rely on her rattling off what was on tap made it difficult to choose...that to one side the experience here was good, albeit pricey...perhaps the most confusing part to me was the big price difference between regular menu entrees and the specials...the prices for regular menu entrees were in the 15-20 dollar range...the specials were all 25 and up, several over 30...i wound up going with the pork belly which was very good...but a $150 bill for 4 soups, 4 entrees, 2 beers & 2 glasses of wine seems a bit steep to me...a good place to try, but this will definitely not become part of the regular rotation, not at these prices anyway

Came here this past Friday night with my fiance, and met up with a couple of my good friends. I was expecting a small hole in the wall bar but this was not the case. Upon first stepping inside we noticed the ceiling is very old-school (a la Port Jeff Theatre Three, Billies) and the entire decor was all around nice. It's split up into two different sections-- one full bar and taller tables for 2 on the left, and dining booths and a small bar on the right. A windowed wall splits the bar in two.

It was pretty packed when we got there around 10:30 and there were still some people diniing. A lot of people were hanging around the bar. Not too long after the waitstaff started moving the chairs and tables to make room for standing and an area in the back for dancing. Although I'm not sure why they had to take away the stools that were lined against the bar. There was no DJ, but music was coming from somewhere. (Apparently there was once a DJ in the summertime, according to my friend).

So why 3 stars? I asked for an Irish Coffee ($6), what I got was coffee with whipped cream. There may have been a hint of Jameson but certainly not Baileys (I asked). My bff Ken was nice enough to buy me a fast food sized ketchup cup of a shot to pour into my coffee (not sure how much that set him back). Shots that are that small? Shame on you!!!!!!!!!! Next 2 drinks were Blue Point beers ($5.50 pint), some kind of ale, which definitely got me buzzed.

I'd come back here with friends but not order another Irish coffee. And certainly no shots in kid-sized cups!

I do visit this place often and I do have a good time every time I go. This place is perfect for Friday nights. The crowd is really good and there never is anyone there too drunk or too crazy. Pricing is reasonable and the food is great. Yes, the shots are just as tiny as the place is but the music is always good. I only gave it four stars though just because I don't think its extraordinary, but very good.

I don't know what the food/restaurant is like... but in regards to the bar--

They have nothing interesting on tap. Mixed drinks are big because they give you lots of mixer. Shots are TINY (think paper ketchup cup sized).

With that being said, this place still gets very crowded (and loud). I was there during the weekend, but they seemed to have good Happy Hour deals during the week.

It'd be a good place to go with a group of friends for:
    1) Happy Hour.
    2) If you're already sauced, and you're...
    3) trying to pick someone up.

...but not so much for anything else.

i have never ate here, i am commenting on the night-life.

also i rated it 3 stars bc i figured it was neutral, i just wanted to give an opinion not rate.

fridays and sats are pretty crowded.  i do not like bars, but i have to admit, this one is a little nicer looking than a dive bar.

the music was like 90s stuff, lady gaga, one hip hop song all night.

not a racially mixed atmosphere.  like 99% white.  should we expect anything different?

ppl dance, if that music is ur thing.  the guys dont really bother u here.

Exquisite food! It gets 5 stars because I'm from NYC and this is on Long Island, 4 if in Manhattan.. The presentation is incredible. I had the meatloaf sliders with bacon and cheddar for appetizing, fries and slaw were killer too (I'm not a fry guy), cooked perfectly but must use fork, too messy to eat like burger slider. Entree  was the Crusted salmon with asparagus, cherry tomatoes and crab stuffing on top. 2 awesome sauces, a creamy buttery one and a tasty lemony green sauce, all served over mashed pots. I asked for the salmon rare and it was cooked perfect. It's presentation was so good I didn't want to eat it. The flavors all come together in each bite. Asparagus was cooked perfect too... Pricey for Long Island, but surely great food. Not crowded, lots of HDTV's so you can bring a date and sneak in watching your fave team play a game. Comfy seats in the booths too.. Instead of butter with bread, they had a pesto, basil hummus spread. Healthy AND delicious. Bread was great, and I'm not a bread fan either.. Def going back!!

    Patchogue Pub Crawl Stop #4

Not my kind of place.  They have a ton of muscled staff on the watch, which to me is a bad sign for two reasons.  One- there's a chance that you're going to get punched by a patron and then pummeled by a bouncer who is "breaking it up."  Two - bouncers have to be paid, so their salary is going to included in the math used to calculate drink prices.
The crowd here had one thing in common, they were dressed to pick up members of the opposite sex.  The age range ran from early twenties to mid-fifties, but most everyone was holding it together.  I remarked to my friend that it was like that "Jersey Shore" show but slightly further up in the gene pool.  Recently I was told I look like Jay and Silent Bob's bastard child, so needless to say, I did not fit in.
The beer selection blew for this portion of Patchogue.  I call "skipsies" on this joint
