I came here for a show about two weeks ago. I believe it was for Bye Bye Liver.
Although I enjoyed myself, some of the audience members were ridiculously rude. Obviously the alcohol loosened their tongue quite a bit. Ruined the show for everyone else.
That aside, I liked that you can order your drinks during the show from the comfort of your own seat by flagging someone with an iPad down. The show itself was interesting. Not much improv and there were a lot of jokes about sex. Kind of wished they would stop air humping and tell a joke every once in a while. I don't understand why there is a separate room from the bar area and the stage. Is that for VIPs?
Drinks are decently priced. If you want to go see a comedy show, go to Second City. If you want to drink more than you want to laugh, come here.
we spent our first evening in chicago here for Bye Bye Liver and it was some time well spent (and cab fare well spent). Being from NYC, we've seen our fair share of great comedy but this was awesome comedy + drinking games = pure hilarity! highly recommend! Great comedy at a great price and some pretty tasty simple drinks for the simple price (e.g. vodka lemonade).
We participated in the drinking hilarity and were rewarded by some on-the-house shots afterwards. The cast were all super nice and hung out after the show to chat with the audience. Really great introduction to Chicago!
Came here on a first date last weekend to see Bye Bye Liver and had a great time! Apparently they just moved into this new venue at 3914 N. Clark and it looked great! It's a cozy little theatre environment and there is plenty of audience interaction to keep everyone involved and interested. Drinks are priced very reasonably.
The only thing that makes me sad about it is that it's a scripted show so I can't really go to see it again. But it is definitely worth the $20 to see once.
Can you say drunkin fun!!! We went for Bye Bye liver and had a fantastic time. We decided to go on a whim day of and had an unbelievable time. We were on of the first groups there and were in the second row. The drinks were good and the pitchers were really good for the price. But the best part was the show... Hilarious and I really enjoyed the crowd involvement. It was basically like a drinking game comedy show that was a great time for any occasion. I highly recommend the comedy show to any one looking to have a good time.
Review Source:I have to admire the business model for "Bye-Bye Liver" it's a drinking game show where they sell beverages and then encourage you to drink a little more and a little faster than you usually might. Brilliant.
The show was a nice Friday night diversion. It's fun to go with groups. I don't think it's something I'd do twice.
Located on the 2 nd floor of Fizz Bar, there are about 30 steps up to the theater.
Some months back I stopped in for the Bye, Bye Liver show. Â It was a busy Friday night and I was joined by a friend eager to finally pop her Chicago improv cherry. Â (Seriously guys, there is a lot of good improv in Chicago and on many nights of the week. Â Get out there!) Â Back to the review.. Â It was busy and the actors forewarned that they would call on folks for suggestions or be volunteers for a few skits. Â It comes with the territory. Â I had a good spot snuggled within some folks, so I never got called on. Â Yay!. Â The show was pretty good. Â There was a variety of skits and interactive games which had all of us participating with the show. Â If you like to drink, you like to play drinking games or be a part of a group, this is a good show to go too. Â Antisocial types that cross their arms and legs and well; y'all stay at home.
The show promotes drinking, so your drinking along with the actors. Â With this said, wait staff were abundant. Â It was dark in the theater, minimal light and a few candles on tables. Â At least a hundred or more people in the theater. Â I tipped our waitress well and so should you if liking their service. Â She was on top of our orders, it still took some time to get to us in the midst of the crowd but she remembered orders and tried her best to bring them in a timely fashion.
I've seen other improv here which was okay, this show was the best by far. Â Being that there are a few new actors in the mix, I may look to try more shows in the future. Â Previously I'd typically be found at shows by Comedysportz. Â Where they offer an open platform for improv groups to go toe to toe or offer their stage to contests between stand up performers. Â It's hit or miss, but there are many funny people in and around Chicago. Â Don't stick to one theater, try them all.
Took a date to go see Bye Bye Liver and it was hilarious! Â What a breath of fresh air after going to two lame ass comedy shows at other places. Â I won't name any names because I'm cool like that (I.O Improv & Comedy Sportz). Â In any case, the date and I both loved it. Â It was definitely more adult humor and the actors definitely had me laughing out loud! Â If laughter is the best medicine, these guys are comic neurosurgeons!
Review Source:Went with a group last night to see Bye Bye Liver - how freaking awesome!! Â I had no idea what to expect, other than that it would be a play about drinking, taking place in a "theater" of sorts above Fizz Bar and Grill. Â One word sums it up: HILARIOUS!! Â I laughed my a$$ off, it really is worth seeing. The actors are actually quite good, I was impressed!! I loved it. I would go see it again! However, I agree with the other reviews...this really isn't ideal for a first date, or if you lack a sense of humor, dig? Ok then :) Â Two thumbs up, I'll be back!!
Review Source:WARNING, there is no sign saying "The Pub Theater" when you get to the address that's given on their website. The "theater" is located inside, 2nd floor of  Fizz Bar and Grill.
So instead of the typical weekend night going to the clubs, I set up a little get together with two other couples to watch "Bye Bye Liver". We had a blast! It's hilarious being able to point out which one of your friends the actors were playing. I would come back here with other people that have not watched it. And the best part is that the improv show has a little interactive drinking game with the audience! I love that the guys on stage keeps the audience involved. It makes it more fun.
At $20 a ticket, this entertainment was well worth the money.
There's street parking but we had to drive around a little to find parking.
Went here for a Bachelorette party a few weeks ago and had a really good time! Â The actors are very funny and keep the crowd engaged. Â At times the skits were hitting a little too close to home so I thought it was hilarious because I was imagining friends of mine and *cough* myself *cough* in the situations they were acting out.
Review Source:The Pub Theater hosts "Bye Bye Liver" on the weekends but during the week they have other shows going as well and for all those sketch comedy/improvisers out there I recommend you check them out. Every Tuesday at 7:30 they have Sketch Test, hosted by Sherra Lasley.  It's a show you can sign up for  to test out your sketch characters. You have to sign up a week or two in advance but I highly recommend you check it out. It's free admission and everyone is very supportive, like an open mic for sketch comedy.  Pub Theater is also a great place to put on your show. They have great tech people and house managers and will work with you on the pricing.
Review Source:Recently attended "Bye, Bye Liver" and while it was funny, I'm not like dying to go back. The theater first of all, is inside the Fizz bar. No sign outside, you literally need to  go into the bar and up the stairs. Drinks are a bit pricey- just did a bucket of beers to keep it low-key but you have many options of mixed drinks in pitchers as well.
The show itself is hilarious. A bit raunchy, definitely over the top and probably a bit awkward if you're on a first date. The drinking games in between the sketches are fun, not scary and it still felt like the cast was drinking way more than the audience.
I'd recommend going with a group, drinking before and people watching after- definitely an interesting crowd!
This place is horrible! Â The first skit gave me a couple laughs, but after that it was horrible. Â The jokes weren't funny at all, and they just played off of stupid stereotypes ie. A dirty mexican who sells tamales at the bar.
Although the drinks were reasonably priced, they were watered down like WHOA. Â There probably was about 1 shot per PITCHER. Â
I was looking for something fun and different to do in Chicago, and Bye Bye Liver wasn't it.
I wish I could give this place 5 stars (and 4 is even a stretch). But, I thought I was going to die of heat exhaustion as I sat watching Bye Bye Liver. I get that the place is old, but sweet Lord, I felt like I was locked in a hot car on a Chicago summer day!
The show was a lot of fun and definitely worth seeing! Don't think for one second sitting in the back you'll get messed with less than the front; they actually targeted mostly people in back.
I think I'll go back to see the show again with guests from out of town, but I'll make it a fall, winter, or spring activity so when it feels like a summertime heat wave inside, it'll be more of a plus.
Of course we came with a group to see Bye Bye Liver and it was hilarious. We had a Groupon so all of our tickets were 10$ each, so I really can't complain on the price. Reserving your group together is a must so you will be sat together, otherwise you could be anywhere. The table are really smashed in together in the theater area so it can get a little cramped.
They don't serve food upstairs so if you are hungry, eat before hand downstairs. Their burgers are pretty good and they don't make you wait an hour for them either. The beers seemed a little pricey at 15 a bucket, but not bad for downtown. The beer selection is also way smaller upstairs, so if you are picky, sucks to be you.
This place was a lot of fun, great for a group. My only issue with this location is the typical suburbanite complaint of where to park? Lot's of raunchy fun and I'm sure I will be back again sometime!
Had a friend visiting from out of town and I'm thinking "what to do?" Somehow I stumbled across Bye Bye Liver, read the reviews on Yelp and just knew this was it.
We went Friday night and it was hilarious. I think anyone who has ever spent any decent amount of time in bars can relate to their sketches (sadly I can - especially the bathroom partners one.) In between sketches they do drinking games with the audience, and I was the lucky chosen one for an either/or question - Naked Twister with Susan Boyle or Jenga with Michael J. Fox? My answer is not important, but just know folks drank.
This may be my go-to thing when out of town friends visit, or for something different to do with locals who have never been.
Went to the Pub Theater last Friday to see Bye Bye Liver. Â Because we decided to do this last minute we had to get the early performance tickets. Â So if you want a 10 pm show on the weekend make sure to buy ahead of time. Â But talking to the performers afterwords they said the crowds always different so you never know what one is going to be better. Â As said if you are going to the late show make sure to get your tickets in a group or get there early to have seats together. Â We were there early and had no problem getting seats together. Â
I was surprise with the show it was really funny.  It is broken up into different acts with drinking games in between.  They are all different bar scenarios my personal favorite was the undercover in the woman's bathroom.  The drinks were not too bad the have fruity drink pitchers for $30 bucket of 4 beers  bud and bud lt 15 and magic hat was 18. Â
Overall the show was a lot of fun but I would go with a big group. Â I would totally see the show again and at $20 it's not a bad deal at all.
My review is for Bye Bye Liver, but I think 3 stars is a fair rating for Fizz as well.
The show was ok. There were definitely several times during the show I laughed out loud but there was certainly several points that were less funny. I agree with several other reviews that it was a little short. Drinks were standard price for the area. 4 beers for $15. I would definitely recommend drinking beforehand which will make the show funnier.
In the end, I would say if a group of people are going, I would recommend joining them, but I wouldn't be the one who planned the event.
You would think that Bye Bye Liver would play off the audience, but all the did was perform what was rehearsed. Â We were a party about 18 girls for a bach party and sat in front. Â Of course we were there to have a good time, but they were constantly saying things like -
We see that you have a bach. party - we'll get to you. Â What is that??
Also, they stated - yes, we here your excitement (as we were clapping/celebrating), we'll get to you. Â
Would not come again nor would suggest anyone else to go.
I came to the Pub Theater to see Bye Bye Liver with a group of girls for a bachelorette party.
The play itself was fun- a commentary on today's bar scene. There were several skits that were great and hilarious and a few that fell flat, but overall it was an enjoyable evening. There were several other bachelorette parties there that night, and it seemed from the skits that this is a popular place for those parties.
As for the theater: the waitresses were ok- there weren't many and they did the best they could. The chairs were fine and they had buckets of beer on special.
The bathroom was teeny-tiny, which made for a very long line at the end of the show, but all in all it was a very fun night. I would go again, but I'd wait a few months until they get new material.
Bye Bye Liver hits "nearly peeing in my pants" on the Brittany scale of funniness. I find myself quoting and replaying funny bits for days after a show. Definitely worth the 20-buck ticket price.
Some tidbits to help you along:
Book ahead of time online.
Walk through the Fizz entrance. The ticket booth is setup near the stairs in the front.
Arrive early, but not too early, especially if you are going to the 2nd show. Fizz gets kind of crazy and you end up just waiting in limbo until they allow you to go upstairs.
They have pretty nice alcohol specials upstairs, but get enough to start with. The wait staff can't really check with you all that often (maybe only once during the hour-plus show) so stock up by getting a bucket or 2.
They assign your seats (FANTASTIC!) so make sure you buy tickets for your whole group or buy them under a party name.
It can get a bit raunchy. I mean, it's a play about boozin.... Just don't bring granny unless she loves crotch jokes.
Alcohol humor at it's best! SOCIAL!
This is more a review of the play than the theater... not much to review with the theater... Love, love, LOVED Bye Bye Liver--A Chicago Drinking Play. Â Okay, my boyfriend moved to Chicago this summer (2010) and it was then that I first heard/read about this unique play. Â It immediately intrigued me and their website was bookmarked in my list of "Chicago Things to Do." Â
Brief digression: One random night this past summer we decided to check out a random neighborhood bar (not important) but on our walk from the El train to said bar we happened upon the Fizz bar/restaurant, which houses the Pub Theater. Â I was like, "Oh hey! This is that place that has that drinking game play." We decided to have some dinner there in their amazingly awesome, sizable, and comfy outdoor patio. Really good food, good brews. We made a mental note to return again, especially for the play upstairs.
Some time later during the summer: Boyfriend, "What do you want to do this weekend?" Me: "I don't know... oh wait, let's go see that drinking game play!" Boyfriend: "Yeah!" Â So I proceed to try to get tickets online for that night/weekend to no avail. Â All shows (8pm and 10pm) for the whole weekend sold out! Â Bummer!
Forward to this past weekend: Boyfriend had previously procured tickets to Friday night's 8pm showing. (They do two shows a night.) Â Unfortunately, my body picks THIS weekend to crap out on me--I got a nasty cold literally earlier that very day. We called to see if they would give a refund (they do give refunds with 24hr notice). Â They were very nice and willing to switch our tickets to the following weekend, but I would not be around. Â I decided I was well enough to go anyways, I just wouldn't drink... as much. Â
Loaded up with tissues and meds, we headed out. Had dinner downstairs at Fizz beforehand. Â Then the call for seating. The Pub Theater is inside Fizz and on the second floor. Once upstairs they check your tickets and seat your party (go up earlier if you want seats up front--they seat from front to back). Â They offer buckets of cheap beers, and then a small selection of a couple other beers. It's definitely more economical to get the bucket(s) if you are with anyone other than yourself. They also have a couple cocktails offered, and champagne (random). Â There are waitresses that go around at the beginning and during the show to collect drink orders (no eating upstairs). Â The show begins and your "host/narrator" is the "bartender". There are real bottles of booze on the bar on the stage, and the various actors proceed to drink shots of the various liquors and beers throughout the show. Â In between each act the house lights go up and there is a "social" where everyone drinks (a familiar term to anyone who's ever played any kind of drinking game, especially card drinking games). Â Also in between acts the crowd plays a drinking game. Â The "waitress" (also an actress from the show, and different from the actual waitresses who take your drink orders) goes through the audience to find participants for the drinking games--don't think because you sit in the back you won't get called upon to participate. She goes everywhere!
Each of the comedic acts revolves around drinking and drinking-related scenarios (no surprise there...), and they are all hysterically funny. I just wish I wasn't sniffling and blowing my runny nose every minute--I would have enjoyed it even more than I actually did. Regardless, it was worth it and I would definitely go back and bring various visitors to Chicago there as well. Â The actors head downstairs after the set to drink more with whoever from the audience wants to hang out, but because of my sick self we left right after the show. I'd like to be able to stick around in the future. Â Check it out if you haven't!
I love this show, I've seen it at least 5 times. Â Every time we have friends in from out of town, this is where we take them for an authentic Chicago experience in a fun part of town. Â Each time I've seen it it's been slightly different, keeping it fresh for the audience. Â I've also noticed some of the actors switching roles, convincing me they're all talented and versatile, diving right into whatever is planned for that evening. Â
The show is great at keeping the audience participation up by mingling with the crowd throughout. Â
I can't say enough great things about this show, go see for yourself!
I have been to see Bye Bye Liver several times, each time bringing different friends... and every show they delivered, GREAT TIME! I would definitely recommend this show to anyone who wants to entertain some out of town guests, or just people who want to have a fun, laid back time.
$20 for some laughs, sketch comedy, and interactive drinking games is well worth the price if you ask me. Name that Tune is my favorite part. I read some of the other reviews complaining about the price... C'mon people, you spend that much in ten minutes at John Barleycorn's... and it least this way, you're being entertained and not hanging out with a bunch of d-bags. Let's be real.
Came here to see "Bye Bye Liver". A few things....that show sucks. Big time. Not funny, unless you're into Wrigleyville frat-astic humor that is demeaning to women and stupid. Yikes.
I can't say much about the bar upstairs....I don't recall how much the buckets of beer were. I can only say our server was attentive.
The bar downstairs, another issue. Rude service. Bad shots. Yuck. I don't like.
Came here to see "Bye Bye Liver" with the crew over the weekend. While our livers are fortunately still intact, we all certainly enjoyed the show quite a bit. Each segment is centered around the different type of outrageous behaviors that most of us have conducted while being intoxicated. My personal favorite is the one when they acted out the various reactions of a bitter girlfriend after a series of soco lime, jager bombs, JD and tequila. It was definitely spot-on!!! The drinking games were a huge plus as well (although I still can't believe how one girl didn't know the song, Sweet Caroline, when we were playing "name that tune").
The $15 bucket for 4 beers are just okay. My only two complaints of the evening were:
1) The show was a bit short with 1.5 hr;
2) At the end of the show, they announced that we could go downstairs to the outdoor beer garden to get a free shot, which got all of us very excited. We literally spent a good 15 min debating what kind of shots we were going get. To our disappointment, these shots were already premade and they definitely did not have any alcohol in them. Guess it was just too good to be true...
Went to see Bye Bye Liver for a friend's birthday. The show was funny and entertaining. I enjoyed how it was a mix of sketch and interactive drinking game. Don't know if it was worth the $20 for one hour, but it's my first type of show so I don't have anything to compare it with.
The downstairs bar is quite spacious, but the patio is sketch and smells.
I would return for a drink but not for the show.
I think the people writing good reviews of the Bye Bye Liver show have not experienced the glory of a truly funny sketch comedy show. Â This show had its moments, but it wasn't worth the price to me. Ticket prices for Bye Bye Liver are $20 for one so-so hour. Â Second City (mainstage) is just a few dollars more for a WAY funnier, WAY longer, WAY more original show. Â
The "drinking games" were pretty stupid, like drink-when-we-turn-the-lights-on. I did like the "Name that Tune" when I could hear it over the dull roar of crowd noise.  My group was seated in the back and it was  hard to see the stage through people's heads.
They also have a stupid rule that you can't order or bring food from the downstairs bar upstairs to the Bye Bye Liver show. Â WHY?!?!? Â The chicken fingers were delicious and I wanted to enjoy them while watching the show and drinking instead of scarfing them down before being allowed back into the show. Â
Not the best experience. Â I'll save up an extra couple of dollars to see Second City next time.
Went to the show at the Royal George and had a great time with 5 other friends for the birthday boy's pregame celebration! Awesome beer prices ($5/ 2 beers) and of course the crew has no problem getting you to drink for "socials" or not being able to "name that tune" in 4 notes or less (Although I did get American Pie right).
Not only was the sketch comedy funny but  the crowd was great too. If you can help it get seats toward the front cuz apparently there is only way to exit to get drink refills or use the restroom - which is right through the top row's view of the stage :-/ That was annoying to have people constantly going back and forth. Also, they tell you at the beginning of the show that a single girl will be able to wait on the whole theatre and all you need to do is fill out an order form, hand it to her, and WAH-LAH! You'll get drinks... Not so much. Take the 3 minutes to get your own drink from the bar. OR! Just double fist it and pace yourself... yes - pace yourself. I found 2 beers perfect for the first half and 2 beers perfect for the 2nd half.
I hope to take my newly 21-year-old cousin in a month or two and wouldn't mind returning with friends. Definately recommend going with a LARGE group :)
Went to go see Bye Bye Liver last weekend and had a great time! Â The play/drinking game was really funny and well worth the $20 for tickets. Â I anly have 2 complaints:
1. Â A bucket of beer was only $14 which is not bad for the city but I am not a beer drinker. Â The pitcher drinks were kinda week and reallllly expensive and the well vodka drink was strong but the vodka was so awful that I could barely gag it down.
2. Â We took a cab to the bar with PLENTY of time for dinner. Â We actually decided to eat at the bar downstairs at Fizz but it took 20 minutes for the server to come and another 10 for her to bring our first round. Â We ended up just chugging our drinks and walking down the street for sushi
So, to sum it up:
Bye Bye Liver = good
Fizz = not so good
Went to check out Bye Bye Liver last night
It's comedy and a drinking game in one.
some friends were going and I decided to check it out with them.
I did not stop laughing the entire time. It's about an hour long..and doesnt' include the price of drinks...but birthday parties were there as well as groups of friends. it's lively it's fun it's very entertaining and well worth the $20. get tickets early cuz they tend to sell out certain shows.
the cast did an amazing job! would definately go see again
it was my 2nd time seeing BBL, but my first time at the pub theater which was different than gorilla tango but not better or worse.
there were: some great jokes, good props, fair drink prices on buckets, great piano playing
i wish there were: Â less drunk scream-y girls, nicer waitresses, ways to get the first show's viewers out and down the stairs faster. Â it was a long wait to get upstairs, get seated, and another wait to get the show rolling.
all in all a successful outing. Â my college age brother and his friend loved it - i'd take tourists here for sure. Â jokes are dirty but not filthy, drinking is strongly encouraged, and the theater is above a bar. Â all good things in my book!
I recommend Bye Bye Liver to anyone who has experienced the bar scene of Chicago. Â It is catered to ALL of us. Â The tickets are not cheap for paying for a drinking game, but the comedy makes it a fun night out. Â The beer selection is good, and the actors are likable. Â
I think calling ahead and reserving a spot for your party is a good idea. Â Also, the Pub Theatre is the same as Fizz Bar...something I didn't know. Â I walked passed the bar until I realized it is the same place.
Definitely a fun time.
Me and a group of pals went here for a birthday party. Â I really liked the concept of the different drink scenes we've all had to deal with at some point in our lives. Â I'm super easy to get to laugh so I was cracking up a lot. Â I don't reccomend this for the type that doesn't like dirty humor and doesn't like to drink. The boring type.
But for us fun folks give it a try.
If there was a movie made about my early 20s chances are it would be called "Bye Bye Liver." But the Bye Bye Liver I'm talking about is a drinking play happening right here at The Pub Theater.
Please note that Bye Bye Liver was playing at the Chicago Center of the Performance Arts, but recently they've found a new cozy home right here. Bye Bye Liver didn't let us know this when we bought the tickets, but fortunately my party of 18 girls (bachelorette party celebration) figured it out a few hrs beforehand. Phew!
What is a drinking play, you ask? I wondered the same thing! Basically 100 or so people fill a room and watch a entertaining show about the stupid things people do when they drink. And there are even some drinking games for those who want to play. Â We laughed, we cried and even rolled our eyes at the stupid parts...but most of it was pretty darn entertaining.
I highly recommend this for bachelorette parties, bday celebrations, or other celebrations. Â And don't forget to clue them in ahead of time about your special occasion so the guest of honor can participate in the show. Â I got to watch our very own bachelorette compete in a "how many brands of tampons can you name" competition. VERY entertaining.
This is NOT recommended for old peeps and pregnant woman. Â We had the mother of the bride and a bunch of pregnos with us last weekend....and there was extra eye rolling going on in that section of our group. I guessing this show isn't nearly as funny when sober! Â Duh- it's a play about drinking!
My friends and I saw "Bye, Bye Liver" based on recommendations from a few friends. Â We absolutely loved it and especially like how interactive the show was. Â I mean who doesn't love a good drinking game?
The only downfall was that the show was only an hour long....we were ready for at least another full hour of laughs and drinks.
I've been going here for well over a year, and now that the Pub Theater is here the place has gotten way more popular, especially on weekend with their drinking show. I've seen that show plus the Cubs show they had and they were both really funny sketch comedy shows! For a city plastered with sketch and other comedy, these guys still stand out.
The bartenders and waitstaff are always friendly, they have great drink specials every day (like a beer and a shot for $5 and a dollar taco night) as well a great beer selection. Upstairs in the theater they have bucket specials too! A must go for a great night out with friends!
