Visited the Publick House because friends of mine are always crazy about it. Went on a Saturday night and the place was packed. Great atmosphere when you first walk in. Waited a little to be seated but from what I hear that is the normal. Ordered some appetizers and they were all delicious. (Tuna Pizza is a must!!) Main course was just as good as the appetizers. I had the Hanger Steak and its was phenomenal! Cooked exactly how I asked for and the sides were delicious as well. The beer selection at the Publick House is another highlight! So many choices and the prices aren't ridiculous. The last thing that made my experience great was the staff. Very professional staff from the servers to the bussers. Our server was very well educated of the menu and helped us with any questions we had. We spilt drinks twice (we might have had one too many!) and both times a very nice young boy came to our table and cleaned the mess straight away. We had jokes with him and he continued his business. Overall, outstanding experience at the Publick House, and I for sure will be coming back for as long as I can.
Review Source:Neighborhood Gem ..... I have been enjoying the Public House since moving to Westfield, NJ over a year ago. Â I find the atmosphere in this upscale restaurant and bar very comfortable, relaxing, friendly and warm. Â Relaxing with a glass of wine near their fireplace will definitely make you feel welcome, especially during the cold-weather months. Although I probably wouldn't place a family classification on this restaurant, well-behaved children are often found dining with parents, especially at the early dinner hour. Â It's great to be able to enjoy a conversation without obnoxious background noise. Â During summer months, they often open large windows that provide an "outdoor cafe" feeling. The Public House service is always excellent. The wait staff is well trained, knowledgeable and very professional. Â The prime steaks are outstanding. Â The fish and chips are the best. Â Great food. Â They have a respectable full service bar with many fine wines by the glass and great beers. Â Their newest draft Racer 5 IPA from Bear Republic Brewing is A+ rated. Â With an ABV 7.0 it is a very impressive brew. Â The place is always packed on weekends and many weeknights. Â Plan to arrive early if you want a table without waiting. Â Don't be surprised if the owner manager visits your table. It is very clear that 100% customer satisfaction is their goal.
Review Source:Been several times - date night, with the toddlers in tow, with my parents and takeout - the food is always good and its definitely what I would call a reliable neighborhood spot/good casual spot. Â
For so many BYOBs I also love that it has a full bar as it adds something for me to the atmosphere. Â
It isn't the largest menu but the entrees are great - the fish especially is always well cooked and seasoned.
The appetizers are delicious - the sushi pizza and chicken wings.
It can get crowded and with that a tad noisy and the servers aren't always on their game but this is a casual pub not fine dining and I'm fine with all that. Â
Its refreshing to see a local spot do so well....I wish a few more like it would open in town.
I have been here twice and both times were the same, uneventful. Â The place has great potential, cozy setup, local establishment, and a long bar. Â However, the food is just nothing at all spectacular, the menu is very limited (which typically equates to tastier meals, but not here) and the chairs are pretty uncomfortable. Â Last night I gave this place a second chance and came away with the same blah opinion.
Review Source:Publick House has slipped a couple notches in my opinion. Used to have great food but the last two times I went was average at best. First of all, the last time I visited with a group of eight, the waitress had a major attitude. She had a sour puss on her face and seemed like she just wanted us to leave rather than serve us. She was clueless about the menu and had ZERO personality. I don't know, maybe she's wealthy and doesn't need a good tip. As for the food, I found it to be rather bland. My entree tasted as if it was hit with the microwave to reheat it. What a shame, used to be a great place to go for a decent meal.
Review Source:The Publick House appears to be a "pub' but it is more than that.
It is a hybrid of a pub and a very good casual dining experience.
It is attractively decorated. The atmosphere is comfortable.
There is a large selection wine and beer.
The service is good to above average.
The food is the thing that distinguishes the Publick House from its competitors.
The food consistently tastes good and is of good quality.
Well worth a visit.
Had a light dinner here on Friday night with my husband.  Arrived about 7:30 p.m.  Got the last parking spot on the lot.  As always, love the atmosphere.  Band playing was called Dr. Brian's Friends and was great.  In the past I have loved the food but tonight it left a little to be desired.  My vegetable pizza was just okay, too much cheese and not very crisp.  My husband's special was penne with spinach and mozzarella in a wine sauce.  The dish was so watery it looked like soup and the broth  tasted just like chicken broth.  Not up to par for sure.  Would go back, however, since I love the atmosphere, the beer is nice and cold, the staff is very courteous and friendly and the entertainment is usually very good (Jessie Villa is wonderful when she sings there).
Review Source:We had a nice meal here. Â Something different than the typical Irish pub. Â Nice atmosphere, ample parking in back and decent food and drink selection. Â The only reason I give this place 4 stars is because I wasn't a huge fan of my entree - Shepherd's Pie (which was really a Cottage Pie) - it was just different than I expected - ground beef with a few peas under a thick mashed potato layer. Â Meh. Â Nonetheless, I'm willing to give this place another try because everyone else seemed to like their meals, and I just could have ordered the wrong thing (for me).
Review Source:We were so happy when we first discovered Publick House, and have been there numerous times with our kids, and with friends. Â However, after my last experience there - not sure we'll be back. Â
I ordered the skirt steak, something I've had before. Â This time - the meat was sinew-y, with a line of fat or connective tissue that I had to surgically remove in order to be able to cut/chew the meat. Â Also, I do like my steak well done, but because this cut was extremely thin, what I was served was burnt to the point of beef-jerky. Â (Note: Â I have ordered this dish well-done at Publick House at least 2 other times, and it's always been great). Â
I told our waiter about my meat when he cleared our plates (I had had only 2 -3 bites of it), and he said he'd let someone (the owner I think) know. Â We ordered dessert and were served a really stale piece of cheesecake. Â My husband joked that we got the one out of the garbage for the table that complained. Â I sorta think he might've been right.
No one ever came by to apologize about my entree, and there was no gesture on the bill - not even a glass of wine comp'ed. Â At $26-27 for the entree, hit-and-miss is not what this restaurant should be going for. Â If I had received an apology or the smallest of gestures or acknowledgements, it would have gone a long way. Â Instead, I left feeling ripped off and poorly treated, after a fairly expensive night out with my family.
Would not recommend based on our last visit.
Have been to Publick House twice. First time was fine. Food is good enough, had a nice atmosphere with a fire place and warm "Irish" touches. Second time there was miserable. For some reason they hired a bagpipe player, which doesn't make sense since that's an instrument typically reserved for open fields and funerals. The only things that died that night were the majority of the cells in my eardrums. We left 5 minutes after being seated.
Review Source:I came here on a Monday evening for dinner with some coworkers. Â I had called earlier in the day to make a reservation, but was told they don't take reservations but we wouldn't have a problem being seated around 5:30. Â There is plenty of parking in the lot behind the building, and we were seated immediately upon arrival. Â The restaurant is small, but it's wonderfully decorated, with a pretty fireplace in the back. Â The bar is small, but there were seats available. Â It's a very cozy place, not at all what you would expect from the outside. Â I was also pleasantly surprised with the beautiful bathroom, in particular the sink (I want one just like it in my own home!)
Our waiter was very attentive and pleasant. Â We weren't drinking, but the food was amazing. Â The menu is on the smaller side, but everything sounded delicious. Â There were a few specials, as well. Â We received a bread basket, which I always welcome :) Â We ordered a few appetizers (garlic shrimp, jumbo lump crab cake and crispy calamari salad). Â Everyone loved everything. Â I only tried the crispy calamari salad, but it was really different and delicious. Â The calamari was crispy, as promised, and well done. Â The salad was very flavorful, and huge - definitely could be an entree on its own. Â For my meal, I just had the Caesar salad, with a side of macaroni and cheese. Â I'm simple, but these items were very well done - the salad was light and the dressing tasty, but it was enough to be filling. Â The macaroni and cheese was great - I would definitely order it again. Â My coworkers ordered a variety of items (crispy chicken, fish and chips, shepard's pie, Dillon's burger, and baby greens salad with scallops) and everyone really liked everything - rave reviews from all. Â We also had dessert - I don't recall exactly what was ordered by everyone, but I chose an Oreo cheesecake that was to die for.
I am so happy I finally tried this place - I will definitely return. Â It's a great place for a night out with friends, or a date. Â The atmosphere is lovely, and the food well-executed.
The food is quite good and this is not your typical Irish Pub- I've been here at least 5 times and haven't had a bad meal. Â Good beer selection. Â My only complaints are: 1) a bit pricey; and 2) very noisy. Â This place draws a crowd, and it's usually not conducive to intimate conversation! Â It's pretty small, too, so it can feel cramped. Â But the food is well above average pub fare.
Review Source:One of my top places around.
You know, you pay for what you get.
So does a restaurant. Â They get better food.
Where? from better suppliers.
Suppliers who charge more but give you superior quality.
So, yes, the prices are above average. Â The service is above average. The food is above average. The beer selection is above average....Okay you get it now.
My choices : The Crispy Calamari Salad, Tuna Pizza (to clarify, this isnt fried) and the BLTA A for avocado. Note - (I usualy am eating lunch), and a great beer.
Since my last review we have been going to Publick House weekly. Â The food is the star here. Â Bradley is an amazing chef. Â
Everything on the menu is excellent and presented beautifully.
I still love that crazy tuna pizza and can't live without it.
Tonight we had the ceviche, yes, ceviche in an Irish pub. Â It was better than any Peruvian ceviche I have tried. Â Fish is fresh and sides are spot on. Â Love the bartenders Peter and Amanda and everyone is super friendly. Â 5 miles from Summit and our favorite local pub/restaurant.
*3.5 Stars*
This was on my list of places to try for a while. Walking in you will realize a few things. It looks very modern and new. The bar area is not very big and the place itself is quaint. In the back there is a fireplace and some comfy chairs to have a nice conversation and a drink. This is not your typical "Irish Pub" menu...it's with an added flair!
The beers on tap are eclectic. They have an Elf beer that is 12% vol...delicious but potent. The bartender I had knew how to pour a Guinness which was very impressive. Time and time again you will not see that...
Onto the meal. The menu is not overwhelming and has various choices. Not too much to choose from which is a good thing. I went with Dillon Burger (grilled red onion, apple wood smoked bacon, Tipperary cheddar on a brioche roll)...This is where I think they need improvement. The bun didn't taste fresh BUT the burger was cooked exactly like I wanted. The toppings went well together but the bun wasn't pulling it's weight. The fries were so/so...but edible (especially when you're hungry).
Their prices are a bit high (the Elf beer was 7.50 but it does kick your butt) but I will take that with great service (which they provided) and a cool atmosphere. I will be returning soon...ENJOY!
This is definitely one of my favorite places in the surrounding area. My fiancee and I live relatively nearby and it is our 'unwind' go to place because you can't go wrong! Great drinks, great food, great service, great atmosphere and always football during football season. Publck House recently hosted our engagement party and I am still getting accolades for venue selection. We had an afternoon party (12 - 4) and it was perfect; the transition from private party to "open for business" was flawless....I was very impressed! Kudos to the owner; you've established quite a Gem
Review Source:I have been here a half-dozen times. Â They have good bar food (burgers, wings, fish & chips etc.) Â The wings are the crispiest I have had in the area and come either 'traditional' or BBQ. Â The fries are 'shoe-string' style and are good when they are hot, sometimes they are not.... :-(
They have a more extensive dinner menu with pricier fare but I have not tried much of it. Â The bar scene is popular and this is the busiest I have seen this corner of Mountainside in several years. Â Park in the back.
Watch out for traffic in front of the place. Â I have almost been hit by drivers not looking where they are going as they come around the corner and who forget to look for pedestrians in the crosswalk.
I went to Dillons for an early dinner with my son. Â It was fabulous. Â The bar and dinner scene really pickec up as we were dining that I realized we were lucky to get there early. Â The whole family went back for dinner and everyone had a good time. Â I have to go back for drinks at the bar without the kids. Â We had the steak and salad, fish and chips, burger and ribs. Â The garlic shrimp appetizer is a must.
Review Source:My husband and I went for dinner recently. Â It is a tight space, but they've done it pretty well. Â The fireplace is a nice touch. Â The salads were ok, but the steaks were really excellent. Â Prices were nothing out of the ordinary and the martinis were made to perfection. Â One thing I didn't appreciate was the scantily clad hostess. Â In the words of my husband "Why did she even bother putting on a shirt?"
Review Source:Dillon's is nice change from the blase food of the Westfield/Mountainside area. We have tried many dishes from ribs, burgers, salads, shepherds pie, mac and cheese and mussels and have yet to be disappointed. The shepherds pie, burgers and crispy chicken (which is very good too) are gluten free. It has a great bar, comfortable, warm atmosphere and attentive service and that is hard to beat in this area!
