So when I got home last night, somebody in my neighborhood BBQ'd and a craving rushed up in me with a fierceness, I tried to ignore it...avoid it all costs...(I'm on a diet ya'll) I ate a light healthy snack and went to bed. However, this morning that craving was still there and at 11am, the craving won....so I knew what I had to be done, lol. I went to http://grubhub.com and searched for food in my area, I discovered Mississippi Ricks, I looked at the menu and couldn't find what I wanted, so I called and I soon discovered they had EVERYTHING (that I wanted).
When I say...the food is GREAT... I mean it from the depths of my stomach, the tip of my tongue, and the sauce remaining on my fingertips. Special thanks to the manager, Karen (lets call her my new best friend, K.) They don't even deliver outside a 5 mile radius without a minimum $50 order and I live 7 miles away...but she made it happen and my stomach thanks her with much gratitude.
The food was every bit of delicious. I ordered the Link & Tip Dinner, it came with spaghetti and steamed vegetables. The proportions were good, not huge, but more than the average serving size and certainly worth $11 bux. The tips were tender and succulent, the sauce on them...not too sweet and just enough tang. The links were smoked to a custom perfection that took me back to those BBQs my grandma had back in the day (I think I might've even heard Marvin Gaye singing in the background lol). The spaghetti was good, I added a few drops of Lousiana's finest hot sauce, "yum". The vegetables gave the meal just the balance it needed... All I can add to that is that I am a fully satisfied customer :)
oh and the meal came with two slices of white bread too... can't tell you how they tasted I was full by then. (But it's just white bread, not homemade or extra special)
After all of that food i'm going to need a nap, and when I wake up I'm going to need to utilize that LA Fitness membership I pay for each month...smh.
I came by after reading Yelp reviews and I was not disappointed. My Jamaican Jerk sandwich was sooo good. I have no clue what was in the sauce but it was amazing. I am pretty critical of sandwiches but I really enjoyed it. The owner was very pleasant and happy to have such a large group come in. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area!
Review Source:I've been visiting Munchines/Mississippi Rick's for nearly 4 years now.
The location is convenient and the interior of the restaurant is really nice given the up and coming nature of the neighborhood.
The service is slow since every order is cooked to order so if you are in a hurry its best to call ahead. In spite of that the staff always tries it's best to move as fast as they can and have always been courteous and professional during my visits.
Normally I order the hot link sandwich which is delicious! It's not, however, actually a sandwich. They just give you two slices of bread with the link and fries. The BBQ is fantastic and the portion size is more than filling for the $6 cost. (comes with fries)
I see that many people on Yelp love the jerk chicken sandwich. I tried it and I didn't care for it. First off, I expected a chicken breast and it's not that at all. It's little pieces of (non-spicy) chicken served with cheese, onions, lettuce and a sweet/tangy type of sauce. It's also served submarine style on white or wheat bread. I took one bite and tossed the entire meal in the trash. My advice is to pass on Munchies version and head up north to Mr. Brown's Lounge on Chicago if you really want a REAL jerk chicken breast sandwich!! Munchines jerk chicken sandwich also doesn't come with fries and they charge $2 for a healthy sized portion. Seriously?? How a $5 sandwich doesn't come with fries is beyond me.
Overall though, I'd say give this place a try if you're in the area.
If you're ever in the area...Do not go to Jimmy John's. Do not go to Subway.
Head straight to Munchies and either get the pot roast sandwich or the jerk chicken sandwich.
They take sandwiches to another level. Getting their pot roast sandwich for one time deterred me from entering Subway ever again. There's no comparison in terms of taste, and price is around the same. The portion might be a little smaller, but a perfect size for lunch if you don't want food coma.
The only problem is that it takes a while for them to make the sandwiches...but that's because their ingredients aren't laid out on an assembly line, collecting dust and sitting out in the cold forever.
I walked into Muchies after watching the Bud Billiken parade one hot summer day. Â I wanted to cool drink but my nephew claimed he was 'starving'....so we sat on the giant sofa order pizza, a sandwich and a salad.
Food came up quickly, the air conditioner cooled us off and the large tv didn't hurt my mood either!
I've been a fan ever since and stop in at least once per month for a pot roast sandwich or salad or the jerk chicken sandwich. Â You should have one too.
Glad I finally tried this place. I took the yelp recommendation and got the jerk chicken sandwich. I'm not a big jerk fan but it was really good and reasonably priced. Staff was friendly and helpful. My only change would be for them to have fresh fruit smoothies. For almost $5 I except fresh fruit.
Review Source:....I came to Rick's first to ask for directions to an Art Fair in the area...but after observing the great space, mural, and menu, I knew I would have to come back for a bit to eat...GLAD I DID!
Like everyone below me has said, Rick's Munchies has the best ever jerk chicken sandwich. For first time visitors- get this item, even if you want to try something else. This is coming from someone who does not like jerk all that much...but MAN! it was great!. As I am writing, I am eating on the sandwich, which has so much favor you will be very happy for $5.95. It truly gives subway a run for their money.
The staff was helpful and nice. I left the place laughing.
I have never heard about Rick's nor the area, but this place give me a great impression and I will be back with the boyfriend soon for the rest of the menu! Support Black Businesses like Rick's!
Stop by this little deli after a volunteer day with some colleagues. The staff was very friendly and helpful because God knows I had no clue what the hell a Mississippi Red Hot was. Let's put it this way, you get a lot of good food for not a whole lot of money. Who can beat that? The menu is filled with Chicago favorites. The only thing I wish I would've done is get an item off of the dessert menu.. Bummer..maybe next time!
Review Source:I absolutely love this place! The Mississippi Jerk Chicken sandwich is hands down amazing! Especially since I've never had it before and I've been here a few times. The owners and people behind the counter are real sweet and always have a smile when they see people from my company walk in for a bite to eat.
Review Source:Rick's Munchies was meant to be a quick pit stop on our neighborhood tour, a place where we could grab a cup of coffee before we embarked on our exploration of Bronzeville. Â Little did I know that I would find the best ever jerk chicken sandwich there.
Karen, the gracious motherly co-owner of Rick's, was curious about what had brought us to her neighborhood. Â Discovering that we were on a mission to explore the area she quickly telephoned one of her friends to come give us some tips. Â She also told me about her popular Mississippi Jerk Chicken sandwich which draws people from miles around.
After the tour I ducked back into Rick's for a taste of the famous sandwich. Â Why some patrons call it a "crack sandwich" was immediately evident. Â One could easily get addicted to the delicious sub. Â It is stuffed with tangy, peppery pieces of jerk chicken and melted mozzarella cheese. Lettuce, onions and tomatoes are optional.
While I waited on my food, Karen entertained me with photographs from her youth and a little history on Rick's. Â I also learned from her that Rick is in the large mural that adorns one entire wall of the restaurant. Â You can find him in the bottom right hand corner wearing a grey ball cap.
I would recommend Rick's Munchies for the warm hospitality and the delicious jerk chicken sandwich. Â But be warned, my friends, if you order the crack sandwich, you just might find yourself hooked on it.
I liked it. Â This is the definition of a neighborhood spot and I am so pleased to see that Bronzeville is supporting this gem. Â This place is comfortable and homey. Â When you walk in, your eye goes three ways (that sounded much more elegant in my mind). Â To the left are comfy couches, perfect for lounging, eating treats and/or gossiping. Â Right in front is a massive chalk board that has a variety of treats in store for you. Â To the right is ample seating, if you feel like eating at a proper table. Â To both the left and right are great murals depicting people partying it up. Â It adds a festive and inviting touch to an already inviting place. Â Another touch I liked: the bathroom doors. Â The male bathroom door has a man, in blue, dancing. Â The ladies room door has a female in pink dancing. Â It's a small touch, but it's one I appreciate that they made.
The food: you have LOTS of options. Â Rick's Munchies has a bunch of...munchies. Â They offer breakfast, sandwiches, salads, coffee, baked goods, ice cream... Â My party got a variety of treats. Â Something that stood out to me was the ice cream. Â They offer large scoops, generously topped with nearly any dessert condiment you'd want. Â I could get used to this. Â I ordered a muffin top (you hear that, Elaine Benes?) with a small coffee. Â My muffin top was of the carrot cake variety - it was full of raisins, carrot and nuts. Â The texture was dense, yet fluffy (did that make sense)? Â It was very filling, flavorful and fashionable. Â Fashionable? Â Why, yes. Â It matched by own, burgeoning muffin top. Â The coffee was made to order with cream and vanilla. Â It complimented my muffin top (the food, not my shameful body) and warmed me up on a not-so-cold November afternoon. Â While service might have been an issue for other yelpers, the two folks behind the counter couldn't have been nicer, more patient or more accommodating to a bunch of folks who had no idea what they wanted to order.
Rick's Munchies is a great reminder that there are many fabulous places all over this city. Â All one needs to do is explore and discover. Â I'll be back to Rick's. Â If you enjoy good coffee, treats and an authentically Chicago experience, you would do well to emulate me.
So I came to this place to meet up a group of my Chicago Architecture Foundation pals for a historic tour of the neighborhood. I was the first to arrive and this place was not officially open yet. I was about 10 minute early to open. However, the owner gracefully allowed me to hang out inside anyway and served me the first cup of coffee for the day. Actually he gave it to me, no charge. For which is why I write this review. His generosity is much appreciated. He seemed like a standoffish gentleman, but hey, I get that. I tend to be the same way at times.
Never the less, he was kind enough to give me a free cup of coffee. I can not wait to go back to try the food. He was making a batch of fresh muffin tops and it smelled so delish. My friend purchased one and I snatched a piece off of hers cause the tour was beginning and I didn't have time to purchase one. However, that piece I had was so warm and fluffy and delish.
The cafe is very creative looking, brightly colored murlas of woman and men's lower halves standing at the bar. The centerpieces on the tables were quite creative I thought. Painted patron bottles with mini flowers in the bottle. Each patron bottle was painted a different color.
I can't wait to go back to read a book over a cup of coffee and a fresh muffin top.
If you make a trip to Bronzeville, definitely stop at Rick's Munchies!
Ok so I'm going to tell you right off the top the sandwiches are very tasty--especially the pot roast sandwich. The muffins are good as is the potato salad. Â Shakes, ice cream and malts are available as well.
They have wi-fi available and the tables and restroom are kept clean.
Definitely reasonably priced as well.
So why only three stars because the young ladies behind the counter are so distracted talking to one another that sometimes it takes a little longer than it should to get a sandwich.
However it is a friendly small locally owned business and it's important to support businesses that hire people from the community.
