Wow I remember this place in its hayday when it was Deja Vu, I don't know what happened but this place is terrible now! The bar service is terrible, the bartenders look like junkies, and the management only cares about bringing the people in so they can make a buck on their door charge!
I'm not one to bash but seriously if you are looking for a good time PASS THIS PLACE UP. I went there last night for a friends bday, the bartender saw me order one beer and then later 2 shots and one 1 more beer.. tell me why did my tab come out to $41??? I right away looked at the bartender and she's like that's not right is it? And I'm like no! She went and got the manager and this guy comes at me with an attitude says he remembers me buying a round of shots for him and like 4 people. I said I don't even know you dude what are you talking about. Before I even looked at the tab again in my hand, the bouncer grabbed me and they kicked me out! Real classy Rockbox! Never go there, that place is a ripoff and don't even open a tab if you do cuz they will put charges for drinks you never had! There are tons of better bars with better service and better prices and better music just up Lincoln Ave! Learn from my mistake and hit up a classy joint! This place is not worth your money!
AND LAST THING: some of you might say oh well you were drunk and don't remember.. wrong! Not only was I not drunk from my 2 beers but I'm a GUY, a straight guy, why would I buy a guy bartender and his random guy friends shots??? That's the most dumbest thing I ever heard!
Not a fan of Rockbox! At all!
What the heck happened to Déjà vu. Even towards the end when they had open mic nights and bands played, it was still better than today. I think so at least.
Why was I there? To see my pal Kris spin the latest in dance and hip hop, a good DJ but I think he was limited to playing what the group wanted. The event group he was with that night had the second floor space to themselves. Management told them the space hadn't been used in over a decade. My ass. I was up there just a couple years previous for a singles thing. It stunk of toes and they had every window open. It looked a lot better this way, open and airy. Back to that evening, some complained it smelled of ass or farts in the lounging space, so, many stuck to the tiny bar area. Too many bodies in that small space and it became sweltering hot. Thank goodness for the wall hanging Dayton fans (shop fans); which is what kept some areas cool. Beers were expensive like back when it was DV.
Mixed crowd, those that only salsa dance, those that want hip hop & rap and then some that just wanted to dance. The group should have figured out what one genre of music they wanted and stuck to it. Can't stand it when a DJ starts out in hip hop then jumps to salsa because some audience members want that. One or the other please, grow a backbone. There were a few old skool console televisions which played some weird girl on girl wrestling from the 80's and what looked like S & M videos from the 70's. I'm not quite sure who requested that shite to be played.
It was weird and I can't say I'm looking forward to going back. Now if we talked about going back to see a band on the first floor.. then yes, maybe I'd check it out again.
Some advice: change up the beer selections, get some decent booze specials, for goodness sake change the fucking carpet on the second floor and get some ventilation going. It'll be a lot better then.
POS Dive bar....the Long-haired male bartender has a fucking attitude and thinks he's hard, but he really could get knocked the fuck out. :)
Besides the watered-down drinks, dreary lighting scheme, and out of date technology, I'd say that this place is the LAST place you want to be, unless you're seeking an illusion of what the deepest pits of hell must feel like.
Avoid this place at all costs. This shithole stays empty for a reason. :yup:
Interesting. This live music bar seems like it should be somewhere else...just about anywhere else in the city. Where is it? Lincoln Park. Yes, there is a bar that plays punk, heavy metal and hard core rock and it's right at the corner of Lincoln & Wrightwood. Totally unexpected.
I came on a Saturday night and felt a wee bit out of place. I was dressed a bit too frilly perhaps and my friend and I stood out, but hey just grab a PBR and you'll fit in no problem. The music isn't what I usually listen to but I looked it as an "experience". More intriguing than the music was the porn reel playing on the TV. Interesting place? Yes.
I love live music.
I love a place that has live music every night.
I like Rock Box Â
I like the neighborhood.
I love Thursday Nights at RockBox its the new little secret. Most people dont know there is an upstairs. On Thursdays there is a $5 cover upstairs but well worth it for great music ( ie)Old school hip hop and house) and great drink deals ($3.00 you call it well drinks and Domestic beer.)
Yay I'm a Fan! ;)
Ok so I went here to support lesbian night on a Thursday a few weeks back on the 2nd floor...it was slow, granted it was opening night but I haven't been back because just the thought of the smell of the carpet that they have going on in the back room makes me want to gag.
Other than that the music was great and I was loving the bartenders and the bartenders were loving me cuz those drinks were strong!!
Ok...so I randomly ended up here on Goth night...on a Friday. All I can really remember is the following:
1) Really sweet bartender that my companion knew.
2) I found $5 on the floor. Round on me! I was very excited about that...probably too excited....I never find money!
3) Goth night...very interesting crowd here. I mean, I usually wear a lot of black, but my companion and I definitely stood out bc we were ladies who weren't wearing black dresses with huge black Docs or tight shiny black pants. Now that I think about it...I think my drinking buddy was the only blonde in that room. Lots of long black hair dye floating around--guys and girls.
4) The dj played whatever music goths listen to just quietly enough for me to hold a conversation. Definite plus.
5) I made bad decisions after my drinks here. Sigh. (This bar is walking distance from the ex...no no no!)
6) I remember thinking...where do these ppl come from?
7) Obviously...no dancing here.
So, interesting. Will I be back for goth night again? Probably not, but it was fun while it lasted!
I would not recommend going here. I am annoyed just thinking about the incredibly rude and inconsiderate bartender. I see that others gave her poor review as well. Â How does she still have a job? Â She had a scowl on her face the entire night, she rolled her eyes at me twice and gave horrible service. Â Having a sleeve of tattoos and quite a few piercings certainly does not automatically qualify you to be a good barternder at a rock clu. The place was tacky and tried to portray the image of a rcool rock/grunge club. Unfortunately, they failed. Bush league.
Review Source:Eh, this place is just OK. Â Not the worst bar I've ever been in (see my review of 115 Bourbon Street), but probably not someplace I would go out of my way to frequent. Yes it's a rock club, but with a trendy aftertaste. Drink prices were too steep and it was too clean to be an actual rock club I would consider frequenting. Seems like they were trying too hard if that makes any sense.
Issue #1 - No High Life. They appear to carry every other Miller product but High Life, I have no idea what they're thinking. Strike 1.
Issue #2 - No Old Style. I don't think I have to explain myself on this one. Strike 2.
I drank nothing but PBR draft, which I guess isn't terrible. I honestly can't remember how much they were exactly, but anything over $2.50 for a PBR is too much in my opinion - and they for sure were more than that.
As far as the staff is concerned, I had no issues. Service was just fine. Also, I was there for a show and the sound was good - no complaints there.
Overall It's not a terrible place, it just doesn't seem like it's for me. Give it a shot though and see what you think.
It was alright. It was neither here nor there for me. It's kinda the type of dive bar I would frequent, but in my review I'm not sure I would steer people reading this in its direction.
The decor would suit someone that likes punk, grudge, metal, maybe hard rock. There are pool tables and old Betty Page videos were playing. They get props for playing that cus she was super hot and innovative. I mean, give her credit. She was a ho before it was popular being a ho. She was on her game doing her thing while every other woman was too busy being scared and fridged. All men should stand up and salute her. Thanks to her, most women I meet today tend to use sex as an icebreaker. Talk about paving the way to a better world...
wow, I digressed^2 just then. So yeah, if you're into alternative stuff then sure, give it a try. If Top 40 is your thing then run away in the opposite direction and don't look back. Oh yeah, they are open until 5am on Saturdays.
A group of us were actually going to buy tickets for the New Year's deal since it's pretty cheap (and the party description mentioned the word "buffet"). Â Two of us had negative experiences trying to coordinate ticket purchase with staff, and we finally gave up when another person in our group was told that we wouldn't belong. Â Not enough facial piercings I guess.
Review Source:Definitely not a new favorite, but this bar wasn't completely terrible. Prices were a bit steep but the atmosphere was ok.
My biggest complaint was the service. The bar tender was incredibly rude to me; she literally walked away in the middle of me asking for drinks. The times she did stop (and it wasn't super busy at all either) she rolled her eyes at me and gave me dirty looks. Later on in the night she started hitting on my friend and continually stopped working to send text messages on her cell phone. Not my idea of a great night spot. they are open until 5 AM though- which is good to know in case I need a super late bar when I'm in the city.
Hey brah! Lets go check out that poseur rock 'n' roll bar near DePaul. I hear its open till 4am! *knucks*
And I hear they have overpriced Jim Beam drinks (so what if its on tap?)
And a non-existent beer selection.
And play shitty music (was that a DJ?)
And tasteless porno playing over and over and over again on all of the TVs.
And will charge a cover for a show even though it was advertised as free and they told your friends' band the same thing.
Its like a NIMBY version of Delilah's - the patrons cant handle the real thing so they'll look at the punk bartenders and tattoo murals and the suicide girl porn and feel all hardcore.
Harsh review for one of the worst bars I've ever been to.
Okay, this is for the Tuesday night crowd of lesbians looking for something to do until 4am. Â In fact, I hear that Tuesdays used to be the girls' night and The Rockhouse is looking to continue that tradition.
This past Tuesday was the first event appropriately titled  "Trick$ter Tue$day$" and I must admit it was pretty darn fun!  The event is held in the upstairs part of the building where a DJ spins music, free pool abounds, and many chairs and couches are available for sitting.  Granted, not many people were sitting because the music was that bouncing. Â
The event might have been targeted toward a specific group of girls, but there were all types of people enjoying the music, drinks, and fun! Â
And, yes, there's a $3 cover, but you get a free shot on top of that...oh yeah!
This place has a lot of potential to be a really happening hot spot in Chicago. Â
Murals of tattoos line the walls -- very interesting to look at for a while. Kind of reminds me of Viper Lounge in Los Angeles.
Being a rock n roll bar, naturally they have a stage for local talent to come and showcase their goods. Â
The back of the bar stocks bottles of vodka shaped like crystal skulls. Â Someone mentioned that it's Dan Akroyd's vodka. Â I think I saw that stuff at Bar DeVille too. Looks yummy -- maybe he'll come out with a tequila -- I do love my tequila.
This might be a good place for my 30th birthday -- I'll need to look into that.
