Saturday july 20th at 11:30 pm i went to eagle bar, and tried to get in, with passport of my country but  the security guard named Steve or Dave,  would not let me in couse he said they only take card ID, by the way he was so drunk that i could smell his stinky breath, while he talking to me, and i asked are u drunk? And he said does it matter?so guess that confirmed me he was. How  could a person under influence of alcohol can do his work rigth, instead he was an asshole triying to impress a cute guy that he was talking to, by talking shit about that situation..... the thing that bothers me is that i have been at that bar before,  showing the same ID and they would let me in......well karma will take care of that asshole, for sure, and hopelly soon,

If you don't fit the "mold" of what the owners or staff wants as a clientele, it is made very clear you are not welcome.  From your choice of drink, clothing, music and appearance you are quickly judged and shunned, not welcoming at all.  I have been to Eagles is many cities and this is NOTHING like any of them, they should drop the Eagle from their name.

So much hate for the Eagle!  I have to come to its defense...

    Sure... It's dark.

    Sure... It's dank.

    Sure... It smells like pee.

Sure... The floors probably haven't been mopped since the Clinton administration.

Sure... The walls are littered with chains, stocks, cages, and miscellaneous leather gear.

Sure... The first person you meet is the big hairy shoeless dude with a beer belly.

    That said...

    The drinks are cheap.

    The drinks are tasty.

    The bartender is always smiling.

    And, most importantly...

I always have fun here.  (And that's more than I can say about 98% of the bars in San Diego.)

large topless men playing pool in a dimly lit bar that smelled like feet
    cheap drinks though.

i was told that it would be in my best interest to wait and pee until i reached our next stop on our bar crawl.  I was also told to be careful if I decided to wear a bandana....i might get some uninvited attention.

I also now know why nobody wanted to be the first to enter.

    quite an interesting evening.

    had a stiff drink though

    YES, I'VE BEEN WARNED...

The 1-star is for the $1.50 draft beer that I got...

Small, dinky hole in the wall a block off the main drag. Reminded me of a biker bar in the movies. You walk in and it's super dark. (GEE, I WONDER WHY?!)

Walked into 2 guys playing pool, of which one had his shirt off with a big huge disgusting beer belly, cut off jean capris and no shoes. EW!!!

    I touched nothing...

Needed to use the bathroom really bad, but held it for 30 mins because when we went to check out the women's stall, the seat was up and a pee spot on the floor as if a guy just used it... YUCK!

    Never....

    Again...

I've passed this the eagle many times and I visit friends who live within walking distance all the time. I have been to the leather district in San Francisco many times, and been to Folsom st fair so I am no stranger to leather.

I am not gay, and I am a girl, apparently I am not welcome at The Eagle. Granted I am not into the leather scene, that is no reason to make someone else feel uncomfortable.

I came in one night after Ray at Night with two of my gay friends, and my best friend who is also a girl. There is a single blue light outside the bar, and the windows are blacked out. Upon entering you pass under some leather strips hanging from the door. As soon as you enter there is an unmistakable scent of sweaty steam. The bar was literally drenched in sweat. The air was warm, wet and stinky. It was hard to imagine drinking anything in there it was so stinky. All eyes were on us as we moved around the bar. Lets just say I saw more than one man getting a bj in there, and we were most definately laughed at when we passed by. Not too fun. Needless to say we did not spend more than 10 minutes in there.

$5 double rum and coke. Im there!

Went here on a Sunday.  Did not know it was a leather bar but hey I'm all for trying new things.  The bar is small and fun. The crowd was a bit older but fun.  I ordered a double rum and coke and when i heard $5 i was like what!  The bartenders were fun and attentive.  I was told the day to go here is on a Thursday.  Had a blast here.  The bartender gave us free shots which i though was nice of him. I will be back for sure.  The bar can be updated a bit and cleaned up. Had fun though.

I wish it were possible to give zero or negative stars for businesses.

On Saturday night, 1/21/2012, five of us...three gay guys and two lesbians...were at a few other bars in the area.  We decided to cruise on in to the Eagle since we were right there.  We walked up to the bar, ordered drinks and proceeded to head to the back of the bar where we stood talking to each other.

A security guard...or someone identifying as a security guard...approached us and very oddly asks "who yelled for security"?  Our answer was, "not us" and we went back to our drinks.  Five minutes later, the owner walks up and proceeds to tell us "you three can stay, but you should know this is a man's bar" and walked off...and THERE IS WHERE THE PROBLEM IS!  The bar was happy to take our $39 drink order and a $5 dollar tip, but then we were told that our female friends couldn't stay in a really passive aggressive, b*tchy way.

I am fine with gay men having their own bars, but they should have told us that when we walked in the door.  They should have told us that when ordered drinks at the bar.  The owner should have approached us in a professional manner, and politely explained that this is a man's bar and that, typically, women don't patronage this establishment.  Oh, did I mention that there was a (real) woman sitting at the bar when we walked in?!?

Bottom line is this, it is fine to have a bar that is for select people.  If that's the case, then tell your customers before they spend money at your bar; otherwise, you're guilty of really bad business practices.  It goes without saying, it's safe to say that the five of us won't be back.

One more thing...a leather bar?  No...perhaps a levi bar, but far from a leather bar.

    FAIL!

So it was my birthday and we decided to cruise on over to the Eagle to grab a few drinks.  I am no prude nor do I have anything against anyone's choices of watering holes.  Honestly I can have fun at pretty much any bar.

To the Eagle I say this...  Thank you for being a welcoming establishment.

To the friendly bartender... although I appreciate you being welcoming and friendly.  You can go ahead and stop flirting with my boyfriend and buying him drinks.  Although I was a little intoxicated I can tell the difference between just being friendly and hoping for a phone number.

To the rather rude pushy bartender.  How about you not yell at everyone in the bar for picking music on the jukebox that you don't like.  I'm not a big Lady Gaga fan either, but thanks to your attitude my $5 bought you an hour of it after I left.

The Eagle has always been my back pocket spot for a low key drink in a less than snooty atmosphere... however after this experience I shall remove them from my back pocket.

Came here on a Sunday around 3:30-4pm. I guess unlike a few other bars like The Hole where there is a guaranteed crowd, this isn't the time to come to the Eagle.  There wasn't even 10 people in the place at this time of day.  Worst part is the moment I walked in the door, it smelled like pee.  I toughed it out and had a drink (bacardi and coke) and it was pretty good so I'll give it that and the price was alright and the bartender plenty nice although not overly chatty.  Maybe if it didn't smell like pee I'd try it again sometime at a different time of day, but the smell just killed it for me.

Yeah, this place was awful. I was in San Diego for Pride with some friends, and got kidnapped against my will and taken here because one member of our party is into the leather scene.

We arrived to find ten very bored and depressed looking men sitting around the bar, chatting quietly. The music in the jukebox was standard gay bar fare... the sound quality just so-so. I really wanted to be anywhere else within about thirty seconds. The bartenders looked at us like we didn't belong (it was mid-afternoon during Pride so we were in shorts and tanktops), the crowd seemed dismissive, the vibe just totally depressing and not fun. We left after 20 minutes and I've never been so grateful to leave a place...

Leather bars aren't my scene, but I've had fun times occasionally at venues in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Definitely not this place.

It's a nice dark hole in the wall, which is kind of my setting. They had a decent music selection on the jukebox. The bartender's for the most part were friendly (except one of them, who was a complete douchebag). It's also the only s&m bar in the city, so if you are into leather, whips, chains, and boot licking then this place is for you. Last time I went here the place was packed and I felt out of place. Everyone was either in leather or shirtless, and I was the only one wearing a flannel shirt and blue skinny jeans; so the unofficial dress code is at least wear something leather.

The price of the drinks is kind of pricey (like fifty cents more than #1 fifth avenue in Hillcrest), but the are strong and will get you. Pool is free too, mostly the older crowd hangs out here though.

Awesome bar in San Diego's North Park neighborhood.  It's a smaller sized bar, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in girth :)  Haha -- get it?

Bartenders and bar backs are H-O-T (check out Mikey -- a regular weekend bartender that rocks it in a tank top); drinks are strong and the bar is dimly lit.

This is your standard leather/levi bar and it doesn't disappoint in that category.  Lot's of sexy leather men wearing their gear -- very friendly, cruisy atmosphere.

Do not bring your girl friends and fag hags here -- they'll feel awkward and out of place.  Take 'em up to Hillcrest!

I was here on a Sunday afternoon with a friend. First visit. We were the only two in there - along with the two bartenders.

The beer was cold and cheap - pint of Bud Light (who am I?!) and a Heineken was $5.

The music was some of the best music i've ever heard in a bar. Seriously. I'm still sorta trippin' on this fact. It was this weird mix of pop, indy, gay, alternative, dance... I was really pleasantly surprised!

I'll def be checking this place out again in the future.

For San Diego this bar is about as much of a Leather bar as you're gonna find. I like hanging out here with friends.
Stop by and grab a Beer.

.its a little dive-y, alternative, neighborhood-friendly and for the unannointed. a leather bar. Some nights more so than others (depending on who you ask.) I have been coming to the bar off
and on for a few years now.
It got even better when I had the opportunity to meet Nicholas. The owner. He will welcome you and will educate you if your so inclined. Its good starting point or depending on how your feeling a great ending for the night.  If your looking for a little "trouble" this may be the place.

I'm a regular patron of this bar, and have since the current owner took charge, I do agree that the leather scene in this town is not what it should be, but I wear mine there frequently.

They now have DJ Mauro spinning tunes beginning at 10 PM on Friday nights, so that is an improvement, and they really need more bartenders like Patrick there!!

The truth is I think each bar should have its own distinct style, clientele and of course atmosphere.

I do like leather bars for the atmosphere and I gave SD Eagle four stars because it is what it is.  Leather is not as prominent here in SD as it was in my former city, Chicago.

I consider SD Eagle 2 stars in the leather bar rating, 4 stars from the dive point of view, 3 stars for entertainment sometimes (underwear night, special events).  Overall, I would give it 3.5 stars but I get caught again in that there is no 1/2 star ratings here.

Only go with your friends for safety if you are straight or not into leather.  It is not a zoo to gawk at, just a bar to say to your friends that you visited with its leather posters, St. Andrews cross (the X cross on the side of the bar).  Warning, if you are a dainty boy or girl and hate dirty wash rooms, go at the restaurant before diving into this world!

This place is so great that it got me into the dog house on Saturday night. I tripped in there after Ray @ Night for a spell and to watch the Olympics. Saw Phelps win his first gold medal while drooling all over his pictures on the screen with the good looking gay guys in the bar.

    Enough said.

There are "Eagle' bars in many cities, and while they are for the most part unrelated businesses, there are some commonalities one expects from the pseudo-brand: a dark bar, chains, motorcycles. S&M gear, posters of other leather bars, hot shirtless bartenders, and most importantly, lots of men in leather.

The San Diego Eagle has all those elements.  Unfortunately, the whole is less than the sum of the parts.  Perhaps it is the jukebox selections (Abba & Barbara Striesand, in a leather bar?) Perhaps it is the fact that they play the same two S&M videos every night.  Perhaps it is the "neo graphitti" decor, complete with haphazard chain link.  Perhaps it is the black light (what's that about?).  In any event the combination feels like someone who has never been in a leather bar has tried to create one.

On the plus side, the drinks are cheap by San Diego standards (although like other bars in town their mixer list does not include ginger ale), the hot bartender is particularly hot, and there are numerous specials.

The bottom line is that I will continue to go, mainly because it is the only game in town.  True, San Diego is not known as a leather hot-spot, but a city this size should be able to support a decent leather bar.

I've been telling all my straight friends this: if you're a straight guy looking for a place to take a girl on a first date, TAKE HER TO THE EAGLE! I'm completely serious, because if you can't take a girl to a seedy filthy leather bar then she's probably uptight, and it follows that she's probably no fun in the sack either, thus pretty much useless. Get it? EAGLE!

Also: pool is free, beer is $1, the jukebox is decent (Grace Jones!), action happens in the bathrooms so if you're not looking for it you should probably pee outside, a red hankerchief in your back right pocket means you want a fist up your ass, and I think I heard that the first Thursday of the month is watersports night so don't forget your snorkels!

Went for the first time ever last night, and was pleasantly surprised. Not typically my setting, however any place that has $1 Bud drafts and free pool is going to sit quite well with me. Furthermore, I wasn't bothered like usual, in fact everyone was quite polite and respectful.

I look forward to returning for another cheap night of beer and pool.

Perhaps I'm a pervert, but there's definitely a place in my heart for "dark and seedy." Especially when it's done so intentionally.

It's a leather bar, not the Copa Cabana. Sometimes I consider myself some kind of biological aberration for being able to appreciate both extremes.

Anyway, I know that the owner cares deeply for his patrons and tries very hard to cater to the leather community. The "discipline" devices on display here are definitely fit for operation. But if it's still not up to everyone's expectations, maybe some suggestions should be relayed to the management, as opposed to empty criticism. How are we supposed to know what a "true" leather bar should be like if you don't describe it?

In my on-going quest to visit all of the Eagle's in the US, I made my way on over to the San Diego Eagle this past Friday. And within 30 seconds of walking in, I knew that I had spent 30 seconds too long at this place. The Eagle is supposed to be The Eagle because it is dark and seedy, with rugged men and stiff drinks. The Eagle is not supposed to have more lighting than a movie set, and include Britney Spears on the jukebox. Now don't get me wrong, I love me some Britney, just not when I'm at THE EAGLE. This was my first and last time at this bar. Maybe I went on the wrong day, maybe I went at the wrong time, but this place left me not wanting to go back ever to even find out.

I will admit I went here during the daytime on a weekend with an out of town guest.

The bar was crowded with your usual fare of leather men, none of which seemed too friendly. Perhaps our butch haircuts scared them off or perhaps it was just a bad afternoon.

Luckily the bartender was cordial and efficient and we stayed for a while and people-watched.

This is sad - the last true leather bar in San Diego. Has all the leather action gone up to LA permanently?
