DANGER! DANGER! DON'T DO IT!
I dine out. Â A lot. Â I'm a 32 year old man who has dined out many thousands of times, from the greasiest of spoons, to the upper echelons of that tire-company guide book.
Was this the singularly worst dining experience ever? Â Maybe. Â Probably.
Wilted lettuce and watery dressing to start, followed by edamame so over-steamed that the husks were mush.
And then, the abomination. Â Sushi still frozen. Â And when thawed, even worse. Â The smell, the horror. Â This was by far the lowest quality sushi I have ever experienced. You'd be better off at the sushi counter of your local Shoprite.
I've had better service from disgruntled fast food workers. Â I've seen more inspired decor in a truck stop restroom.
To echo what another poster said - DO NOT BUY ANY GIFT CERTIFICATES/Groupon-like deals. I bought one yesterday through <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Frestaurant.com&s=c5fe485af4df376130bee54f875814d79c4d7913e1258123b1206d2bdbf4873b" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://restaurant.com</a> and went there tonight and they refused to honor it. Â
Now I need to get my money back from <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2FRestaurant.com&s=0aab4cbd731f3d3b0d1453050d3abc56a8c80bd214e25469c7555b750dca8a51" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://Restaurant.com</a>. Â A hassle I really do not need. Â There are so many good sushi restaurants in the Millburn area, I won't be missing out by not choosing Sapporo.
They have a "half price" menu all year round. But the selection is very limited. $50 minimum purchase to use $25 certificate. Then u can choose from and u are only allowed to choose from the expanded regular price menu. But u can use only one at each visit. And the food is all the same of low quality, unprofessionally prepared. The advantage to have a certificate is u can dig urself a deeper hole to jump in. I do not see any reason that I should go back. Any. U name it.
Review Source:Perhaps it doesn't have the nicest decor inside (many hand written, fluorescent signs about specials) but they serve great quality sushi. Their 1/2 price dine in special on M, T, W, TH cannot be beaten. Their hibachi is ok but nothing special. If you're going to spend that sort of money, I'd go to benihanas.
Review Source:No no no no no! If I could write a review that allowed me to score in the negative I would.
Just got back from "dinner" and I am so sick I may go to the hospital if I am smart. The sushi I ordered had to of been old... or... god only knows what. It tasted so off... and the service was god awful. Never going back... ever
I have been coming here for a long time, almost every week or every 2 weeks. Unfortunately, we have had some pretty bad experiences lately. Â Today was by far the worst. The waitress misheard my friend and brought him chicken hibachi instead of steak (which everyone at the table heard him clearly order)..but when she brought the chicken hibachi she wouldn't correct the mistake and take it back/exchange it. The hibachi entrees all arrived cold, I mean absolutely cold. Like they prepared it when we ordered, and after all of the sushi and appetizers, brought it out an hour later. They served it to us limp and cold. Hibachi portions were small today, and there was no sauce in the hibachi noodles so it was flavorless. Usually there is a lot of great sauce. I told the owner who walked up to me when I got up with my plate, that our plates were cold and not as good as usually, lacking sauce and flavor. She didn't seem to care, made it seem like I was wrong or didn't know what I was talking about, and took my plate back to heat it up but didn't take anyone elses so I got a warm 'fixed' hibachi, and the other 2 people at my table sat there with their cold flavorless hibachi. Overall, bad night. Now that I know the owner doesn't care about our food or experience, I won't be returning. Not even for the prices. I'd rather go somewhere else in town, where the staff cares about your experience. Go to Sono instead, their service is better, and friendlier.
Also, it is a Sunday and I noticed Sundays they aren't as good as other days of the week. I am so disappointed with today's service. I rave about this place to my friends, to get them to go. Now I brought a friend and felt embarrassed that the experience was so lousy.
On top of that, the waitress and owner stared at us after I got my fixed plate, and it seemed like they were talking about us. I don't know why they stared at us like that... I seriously used to come there all of the time and was a good customer. I was so shocked they didn't fix their mistakes, they have a lot to learn about service.
Not happy here and won't come back!!!  Had a reservation for 6:30 (with children) and we were not seated until 6:45. We sat at the table for 15 minutes before anyone came to take our drink order.  Staff is very cold and unfriendly.  7:30pm, we were still waiting for our chef to start!!!  Finally at 7:35, the chef started  The chef was very entertaining, except he never asked how we wanted our steak.  Needless to say it was way overcooked.  The icing on the cake (so to speak) - we were there for my sons birthday and when dessert came, they seemed to forget about it.  So as I said at the beginning, we won't be back anytime soon!!!
Review Source:Went here for a very expensive lunch. Â For $22 I got Hibachi Scallops, fried rice, veggies, soup, and the rock shrimp app. Â All supposed to be half price during lunch but I couldn't tell. Â The food was OK not really much to write about. Â Same with the wait staff. Â I really have no praises nor complaints other than them robbing me for my $22. Â Probably wont go back though.
Review Source:I highly recommend the takeout. Â They deliver later and farther than most. Â Food is tasty and high quality.
Do not recommend visiting in person. Â I had a pretty standard coupon (paid $20 for $40, dine-in only) and they made up a stipulation that was NOT in the fine print (must order 4 entrees.. really? Â we're only two people..). Â
To get to 4, we ordered 2 hibachi and 1 sushi entree, with 1 hibachi pre-wrapped to go. Â The chef cooked us up a nice meal with the usual jokes. Â As the chef was cleaning the grill, and with my fork in hand, our server handed us the check and asked, "You want that wrapped?"
"Um... I wanted to eat it."
Me and my friends were driving around and we end up parked somewhere millburn and walked in sapporo japanese restaurant.. I had the lunch special bento box beef teriyake, and we also tried the baked mussels which is pretty good.. And plus the 50% off sushi is the deal! Definitely ill come back.!
Review Source:My boyfriend takes me to Sapporo on the regular, and I always look forward to it. So you can imagine how I felt signing into Yelp to find all these negative reviews! Well, in case you CAN'T imagine, I felt like Rebecca Black waking up on Saturday morning to find that my new single "Friday" hadn't landed me on the Billboard charts so much as on Anderson Cooper's Ridicu-List.
I always enjoy Sapporo's special rolls, miso soup and green tea. Their spicy crab salad is not to be missed (really anything with their spicy sauce is delish!) The decor is modern Japanese with a humorous twist, featuring Sapporo's adorable cartoon monkey mascot and a display of Hibachi "pee-pee boy" figurines for sale at the sushi bar.
The surrounding area of Millburn is beautiful, and great for a leisurely stroll, shopping, or grabbing a pre/post-sushi drink or coffee.
This place was terrible! Â Had the shrimp and steak hibachi. Â Overall the meal was a real disappointment. Â Flavorless. Â Also, they served the food from the hibachi at separate times. Â So first I only had a plate of vegetables, which were ok. Â Then was served "fried noodles", which was a plate of boiled noodles with butter, very bland. Â Then a lonely plate of shrimp which were ok. Â Then after the shrimp a plate of steak, which was bland and overcooked. Â Maybe if it was served all at once it would have been a little bit better. Â Probably not!
Review Source:Hit up Sapporo for the first tiem the other day.  Overall, I enjoyed the sushi, but was let down by the service.  It was a bit warm in there too.  I will be back to have more sushi and check out the  hibachi.  HOpefully I will have more to say then.
Oh, they sell the hibachi  pee pee man her for $5.50.
DO NOT BUY ANY GIFT CERTIFICATES.
Other than that..just don't bother.
That should be enough, but if you're curious why then you can keep reading. Â
We received a gift certificate to Sapporo and decided to make a night of it. Â After parking in a lot a block away, I wondered how so many Asian restaurants can compete within such a short distance of each other. Â I believe Japanese food alone had 3-4 restaurants. Â I quickly hoped that maybe the competition inspires each one to be better...I was wrong.
We chose to eat Sushi at Sapporo, so that's what I'll review. Â The first disappointment occurred when we found out we could not use out gift certificate. Â We were hoping to try a sample of sushi along with some entrees, but we were told we had a simple choice. Â If we chose to select from the sushi menu (which was "half price) we would not be able to use the gift certificate. Â Despite the fact that our appetizers, soups, salad, entrees, dessert, and additional non "half price" sushi specials would have been regular priced and made up of 90% of the bill. Â So instead of spending what would have been about $75 or so on dinner with a $25 gift certificate, we spent about $35 on the "half price" sushi only. Â
Let me just pause and explain why I keep putting half price in quotes. Â It is in my opinion that if you are saying something is half priced, there should be a regular price. Â However, if your items are half priced 7 days a week for lunch and dinner; well then, are they really half priced? Â No I'm sorry, they're just good regular priced items at that point.
So for $35 we got a decent amount of food. Â Unfortunately, it wasn't good food. Â The fish wasn't particularly fresh. Â The fish wasn't going bad, but I couldn't be 100% sure it's Sushi grade fish. Â That didn't matter much as you got very little fish as it is. Â It was mostly rice if you got pieces. Â And if you got a roll, it was mostly whatever vegetable that normally comes with the roll. Â
A lot of that was caused by whoever created the menu. Â Matching mushy items such as Avocado and Spicy Tuna without adding any crunchiness (roe? vegetable? sesame seeds?) is just a bad idea. Â Or trying to fill a roll with mostly cucumber just overpowers any fish that might even be present, leaving you thinking you had just gotten a cucumber roll. Â But I suppose filling it that way reduces cost. Â And that is the heart of the experience here. Â It feels cheap. Â The experience feels cheap. Â The lite soy sauce tastes like watered down soy sauce instead of just reduced sodium as an example. The way they price their menu and treat gift certificates feels cheap.
Even the service was cheap. Â They hovered around constantly to see if you were finished eating. Â Despite the hovering, empty glasses were not refilled. Â When you needed something, you still had to try to get their attention. Â The worst part of it all is that you're simply not welcome here. Â In the middle of your dinner, you will have the kids of the staff or owners running around. Â Your servers will be doing clean up while you're eating (items normally done at the end of service - refilling condiments, moving furniture, etc.) It'll make you wonder if you've stayed past closing, even if it's nowhere close to it.
After dinner, we were so unsatisfied that we considered going straight across the street to another sushi place. Â We decided against it but ultimately got sushi again the next night at another restaurant.
I miss JP Lee's. This place is terrible. We only went because I got a $25 <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Frestaurant.com&s=c5fe485af4df376130bee54f875814d79c4d7913e1258123b1206d2bdbf4873b" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://restaurant.com</a> gift certificate for $2. However we found out we can't order from the special menu if using the gift certificate. It turned out being the same price either way. Not worth it. Go to Sakura for sushi or Benihana for hibachi.
Review Source:I dined at Sapporo on Saturday night with 12 of my friends for my birthday dinner. The service was TERRIBLE. I made 7:00 reservations for 13 people about 2 months ago. I was assured that we would have our own Hibachi table as we were celebrating my birthday. I arrived at 6:50 to get everything ready and we were not seated until 7:35. Seated at 7:35 for a reservation I made 2 months ago????? I have never experienced such bad service. When I kept asking the hostess why the table wasn't ready she kept saying "5 more minutes...we're making it perfect for you.." After a while I went back to check and there were NO hibachi tables available so basically they were waiting for someone to leave. HORRIBLE. They didnt even have glasses on the table. The night was a disaster. DO NOT go here.
Review Source:My lunch bunch and I eat here at least once a week. Â Great lunch value for Millburn-- half price rolls on Thursdays and Fridays. Â Being the serious businesswoman that I am, I get very antsy if I am out of the office for more than the standard lunch hour. Â Something about the atmosphere of this place makes you forget that the day is only freaking half over and you still have to submit your TPS reports and shred sensitive documents and other stuff a no-nonsense businesswoman does. Â I digress. Â They will certainly have you in and out in 45 minutes, but it feels like much longer, in a good way. Â
I've had the tofu bento box, which comes with california rolls which they gladly swap out for a vegetarian option (I get the sweet potato rollz all day sonnn). Â They also give you the vegetarian dumplings, a salad, and soup--I never trust soup to be vegetarian, but I haven't asked here if it is. Â Their vegetable rolls aren't innovative or anything, but make for a satisfactory lunch. Â I usually get them made with brown rice.
I've found the service to be attentive, friendly, and perfectly willing to make substitutions/accomodate special orders.
Let me preface this by saying that I am a huge sushi fan... while I certainly appreciate higher-end sushi places like Sushi Lounge, I get excited to eat even standard ho hum sushi.. I'm basically obsessed with it and definitely no "snob" about it. Â So I decided to try Sapporo because I was on my way home from the Short Hills Mall and I had a 15% off take-out coupon... I ended up ordering the "Spicy Maki Combo" (which comes with a soup and side salad), a yellowtail jalapeno roll, and an eel cucumber roll. Â I started with the miso soup which was good.. unfortunately I'd learn that it was the best part of my meal. Â Salad was just fine, but the ginger dressing seemed watered down. Â While I was less than impressed with the eel cucumber roll and yellowtail jalapeno roll, I'll save my wrath for the three rolls that make up the Spicy Maki Combo (spicy tuna, spicy yellowtail, and spicy salmon rolls)... for starters, all three rolls were indistinguishable. Â God only knows what they grind up to make these rolls, but I can tell you that the texture was "mealy," the taste can best be described as "less than fresh" and here's the kicker... on two seperate occassions, I felt something in my mouth and spit out fish scales! Â Utterly disgusting. Â I'm turned off to this place forever and would turn down a free meal there, that's how disgusted I was. Â The 2 other sushi places in town are a far better choice, also I'd highly recommend Taka Sushi in Summit.
Review Source:My friend and I arrived there expecting to go to this awesome restaurant that used to be there but Isn't anymore. So we decided to go there anyway. We saw a sign that said lunch specials and said why not. the place was empty. The atmosphere was cute and there was little monkeys on the windows which were very inviting. There was a room in the back that said Hibachi. There was a sushi bar as soon as you walked in. They sat the two of us in the corner in a huge circle table.
The service was HORRIBLE. We could barley understand our waitress. She had no idea what we where saying and had to repeat ourselves numerous times. Finally we each order a Bento Box. Which was a cool idea. I ordered the Teriyaki tofu and it came with miso soup, ginger salad, dumplings, white rice, and a California roll sushi. I had them replace the dumplings and California roll with vegetarian dumplings and avocado sushi. She kept on wanting to charge me extra for changing it from the menu. Finally she understood that I didn't want another fish. I don't know what part of vegetable sushi sounds like fish.. but we'll not get into that.
The sushi was good but you cant mess up avocado sushi no matter how much you try. One of the dumplings had meat in it. Which they weren't that great to begin with. The tofu was totally gross. It was squishy, falling apart and had nooo flavor to it. The sauce was watery and added no flavor to the tofu. The veggies with it were gross too. All around disgusting. They had gotten my friends order wrong but she ate it anyway. Sense it was such a hassle to order to begin with. She got something with stake and they gave her beef Teriyaki. She said her sauce was thicker so that's weird that mine was soo runny. They poured hers right on top also. She said it wasn't anything great. Just OK.
We attempted to save our lunch by sharing a desert. We ordered it from a little flip menu that was on our table. The green tea ice cream with rice paper around it. A few minutes later the lady came back and said they have no green tea ice cream and only had vanilla. We said no thank you and asked for the check.
Neither of us will never ever ever go back there. I miss JP Lees that used to be there before this gross place.
My family wanted to eat some Hibachi and I was the one in charge of finding the location. My gut told me to go up the street to Bennihannah's, I should have just stuck to what I know and lead the group to greatness. I called Sapporo and asked if we needed reservations for 6. They said yes. We arrive and the place is DEAD! Which amplified my negative gut feeling even more.
The atmosphere was so, so. Nothing fancy, the sushi chefs did say hello to us, which was nice, and if you want to sit and eat at the bar you would have the option to watch the big TV behind the chefs. Lighting is nice. Not too bright, not too dark. There is no bar. It is a BYOB. The wait staff was kind enough to tell us where a liquor store was, about a block over. What they didn't tell us was that every liquor store in Millburn closes at dusk on Sundays. So we walked there for nothing.
We were sat. When the waitress came to take our orders she didn't seem to understand what we were saying.. Me and one other person I was with ordered the Surf and Turf. The waitress, and for that matter the whole waitstaff, did not speak very good English. We both said said Surf and Turf, she said Lobster...I assumed she wanted to clarify there was Lobster involved. I ordered Steamed Rice, everyone else ordered fried.
The Chef came and did what hibachi chefs are supposed to do. Entertain. I told him I wanted my filet Med. Rare. He nodded, I assumed he understood...When it comes times to eat the meat, He put pieces of meat on and asked the others about their steaks...but not me. I assumed, since I told him how I wanted mine in the beginning he knew how to make my steak. All this time I'm wondering, where's my white rice? I got left over fried rice, and three pieces of extra shrimp, and veggies....he gave it to everyone. My boyfriend is allergic to shrimp. Usually not a good thing to put on peoples plate if they didn't order it.
TO wrap up this long story. The waitress had a huge communication barrier with our orders. She did not understand what me and the other person wanted...surf and turf. She put lobster in. I didn't get my white rice, and by the time I was done eating the veggies, three shrimp, Â cup of left over fried rice, and my 28.00 pieces of lobster tail, I was full and didn't want the filet or white rice at all. It was way to expensive of a meal to get such crap service, and WAY to expensive to be put in the hands of people who have a hefty communication barrier with their customers.
The service sucked, there is no bar, they have waitstaff taking orders unable to speak hardly any English. AND! To top it off, when we were about to leave they started construction in one of the back rooms. So while waiting for our check, we hard beautiful drilling, and hammering sounds. Who does construction while the restaurant is open!
If the place is empty at dinner time....there's got to be a reason. I should have trusted my gut and went up the street!
