My hubby and I have this tradition each year during Lent where we try a different sushi place every Friday (yeah, I know ... this probably doesn't drive home the whole concept of "sacrifice" but hey, I'm not even actually Catholic!). This little place was close to home and BYOB (always a plus in our book!). It was small and cozy but we were able to get seated without a reservation on a Friday night (also a plus! And certainly not the case with our go-to sushi place in the hood, Coast). The sushi was fine ... not out of this world (still looking for a place to top Coast in that regard and I don't think S@kura is going to be "the one"). We always order the Spicy Tuna roll as our measuring stick and theirs was actually spicy (yet another plus!). Overall we enjoyed decent sushi at a very reasonable price (yay!). Seeing as they also offer delivery/pick up I see this place becoming a viable option for us when we don't want to shell out the big bucks for an at home sushi night.

*Sorry for the repeated Coast references .... being our current fave, I can't help but compare every other place we try to them. I'm not much of a foodie, so I need a basis for comparison!

I usually get good service here but last week was pretty bad. I haven't been here for a while and I guess things have changed. Too many different people coming to our table. They bought me the wrong thing and when I asked to look at the menu again, the sever got an attitude. When I told our waitress she hushed me...not cool. I didn't go out to eat to get an attitude and poor service. It was my friends first time going there. She won't be back and neither will I. I don't recommend this place.

atmosphere is small & cheap but the sushi is good.
Not the best in chicago but still really good for how close to my house it is.
Place is BOYB and there is a Liquor store across the street.

I ordered the CA rolls and tasted a few of the rolls my friend ordered. All very fresh and the place felt romantic and cozy. This place didn't particularly stand out but it wasn't bad. =)

Doesn't have the biggest curb appeal of being fresh for being seafood sushi, but not that big of a deal. The place is rather small, probably 30 people capacity tops, and I found it to be very warm, a little uncomfortable the night we visited even thought it was nearly empty. We did love the fact of being BYOB with no cork fee, and they even brought an iced wine bottle holder - all at no charge.

Customer service was very good with what I believe to be the lady manager or owner of the restaurant, but one of the servers seemed to have a little less knowledge but quick into finding someone that could help us. They were all very patient with us as I had to translate the menu to my little sister that was visiting from out of the country.

The food was good, neatly presented, but nothing much further than out of the ordinary. My best friend including myself love spicy food, and we thought that everything had something spicy in it, but it didn't bother us. I'd probably only go back if I were in the area looking for a last minute sushi restaurant, but I wouldn't go out of my way to bring anyone over.

With the failings of the sushi at Friendship, this has become our go to spot or sushi! Try the Waikiki Roll or the Super White tuna sashimi! WOW!

I am always very stand-offish when it comes to trying new sushi places, the anticipation of some very yummy dishes can soon turn to utter dismay if the sushi is not top notch. So you can surely understand my caution. After scrolling through GrubHub for a good 30 minutes, I finally landed on this delight. It was right before midnight and I wasn't sure what if any place would deliver, but S@kura came through! Delivery was fast, and the food was outstanding. I got the Godzilla roll, the Sexy Chic roll, and the Philly Maki. Everything was very flavorful and visually nice to look at. Just what a sushi order should be. This is the 3rd place that I have tried so far in the Logan Square area, and I have to say this one tops my list.

I was a tad nervous trying this place out for my boyfriend's birthday since we had never been there but sooo happy I finally came - it was the perfect place to go to for an intimate dinner. The decor is small, cozy, and dimly lit, I enjoyed it and the cute little Japanese fixtures all around it.

There were so many items on menu, not the exaggerated kind but just enough to give you a great variety. We started out with the veggie egg rolls, which were pretty good. And then moved on to a California roll (free with your first check-in on Yelp!), Godzilla roll, and the Mexicana roll. WOW. These were so beautiful and tasty! My favorite from the three was the Godzilla roll, it tasted so incredibly fresh and all the flavors complemented each other so well. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, which was great.

I will definitely be coming back to get my sushi on!

This is my go-to spot when I have a sushi craving but don't want to travel too far and/or spend too much.

FYI: Every time I've dined in, it was good & everyone I've brought there has enjoyed it as well.

But, on Tuesday night I placed an order for delivery and it WAS NOT GOOD. I ordered the spicy tuna maki, spicy scallop maki & ramen soup.

I don't know if S@kura latest shipment hadn't come in or if Tuesday night should be avoided at all costs, but the tuna had totally turned. I wish I could post a picture.

I know that S@kura knows better too--Typically the "spicy sauce" is not slathered on so as to mask the color of the tune, and every time before it's been a healthy shade.

After a couple bites that weren't great, I noticed the tuna was borderline black. Having said that, I did not get sick, but this sushi was not on point.

The spicy scallop was fine.

The ramen was acceptable although the noodles were overcooked & it's overpriced at $8 for two shrimp and noodles over miso.

If you're in the area, I recommend Wasabi for ramen. My roommate, who's a bit of a ramen expert, was a fan.

If I'd been served this tuna table side, I definitely would have sent it back without any qualms. For now, I'm avoiding delivery.

I was so excited when this place opened in Logan Square. Finally, amazing sushi! I have been meaning to review the place for a while... My favorite cuisines united into one fantastic meal, Mexican and sushi. What can be better. My favorite rolls are the Mexicana roll and the Mexicana roll... I really like the Mexicana roll.

P.S. The owners are wonderful people. They are very warm and inviting, keep it up!

This is a GREAT place for sushi. It's a little small but rarely too crowded to get a table.

They have an amazing sushi selection at affordable prices. It's BYOB which is always a plus and the staff is wonderful.

BYOB + moderately priced rolls + interesting and unique combinations + easy parking + no hassle service = 5 stars.

I'm sad my friend had a poor experience there. Maybe they've learned their lesson since 2011.

Our favorite rolls was the sexy chic. YUM

I just don't get it....

I live in the neighborhood so I thought I would check out the sushi. It was meh, so-so. The fish seemed pretty fresh but the flavor combinations were off and everything was HEAVY on the mayo (ick!).

I thought maybe I caught it on an off night, so I ordered twice to be sure, but had the same experience.

I just don't get what all the great reviews are about.

MY OH, MY I've diead and gone to SUSHI HEAVEN! Not only is this place awesome because it's BYOB but their rolls are AMAZING! I've been here twice with large groups (so we order lots) and everything is out of this world. It's a small place so getting a jump start on dinner might be key but I've made reservations online and been golden!

The only real negative thing I have to say about this place is I hate the "@" in their name.

Past that, this is my favorite place to get sushi in the area.
The atmosphere is pretty average, but dimly lit setting and red walls make it a pretty great place for a date night.
I'm a big fan of their signature rolls; the Godzilla Roll and the Sexy Chic Rolls are delicious and filling. The classic maki mono even somehow have a "pop" to them and are always very fresh.
My advice is to order a little of everything and share with your table.

Service has always been prompt and friendly, though to be honest I generally come here late in the evening when few tables are occupied.

BYOB. I don't ever recall paying a corkage fee.

The prices are a little high, but in my opinion you get what you pay for. Also, they often have coupons here on Yelp or GrubHub for a free roll or money off of your bill.

So, I consider myself an avid sushi eater. My husband and I order sushi takeout at least once a week for the last ten years. We tend to be creatures of habit and always order from the same place - why go somewhere else when what you are currently eating is good! THat being said, we decided to try something new in the neighborhood last night. Based off of all of the reviews on yelp, we gave S@kura a shot. I would have to say that we were both terribly disappointed. The sushi was not overly fresh, very bland in flavor and overly sauced - despite careful ordering to not end up with very saucy creations. The spicy tako (one of our favs) was actually chewy - not a good adjective for sushi. After trying a few pieces, we actually considered calling them to see if we could take it back. Didn't seem worth the effort.

Needless to say, we won't be back. Especially when Hachi's Kitchen (5 star rating) is only a few blocks away.

Just got delivery from here, and I will be ordering here from now on. I got the spicy crunchy tuna roll, and the spicy scallop roll. Both tasted bright and fresh, and...WERE ACTUALLY SPICY! Mouth and lips burning type spicy! incredibly glorious.
I also got a seaweed salad. Could have done with more seaweed, but I appreciated the thought in adding the carrots and radish. The clean radish really helped elevate the heaviness of the sesame dressing and seaweed. The miso soup was just not my thing, but it wasn't bad, and it was free! So I'm not docking points there.

Big things can come in small packages. Yes, cliches are fun to say especially when they are true. S@kura is pretty small on the inside as it looked like there were only about 10 or so tables.

I made my order for pick up, so the food is the main evaluation from me. And the food was pretty friggin awesome. They pack a lot of fish into their rolls and nigiri with not too much rice. It's a complete win-win.

The hamachi nigiri I bought was very good, but the star was the rolls for me. I got a spicy tuna and a sweet alaskan roll. The spicy tuna is pretty self explanatory. Instead of a mayo, they had the tuna itself spicy. This is actually fine by me and these were very good. The alaskan roll was great. It was packed with crab and salmon. There was a big dose of cream cheese on it as well. The cream cheese was a bit whatever for me, but these rolls were huge and were damn good.

S@kura is byo, so my return will definitely happen. The size prevents it from being a place to have a larger group, but it seems perfect for smaller groups

I live a few blocks from S@kura and I can tell you that it never disappoints. Its rolls are very creative and have interesting flavors. This became my comfort food whenever I have a long day at work.

My personal favorites are the Godzilla, Mexicana and Fire Dragon rolls, but all of them are really good.

The staff is really nice and they are very attentive, which I appreciate. I also like the fact that they sometimes play Japanese pop songs, it gives the place more personality.

Bottom line, you should try it out. Make a Saturday plan to come here and then have some drinks a few blocks down at Quenchers.

My friend took me out for my birthday last week and this ended up being our hang out spot. It was such a cute little place. It's funny, because the awning outside is a bit bright, so I don't think people driving by would get how tranquil and serene it is inside!

From the attentive service, to the great food, this was a nice experience! I liked that it was quiet, too. We were initially the only ones inside the restaurant. A bit later, a few other groups came in.

This is near her house so I'm really happy that she has a new "go to" place in her area for some quality sushi. She explained they deliver too which is pretty cool!

Cute place! Great for a no hassle, relaxing night out with your friends! BYOB too!

I went to S@kura for a buddy's birthday party. He swears by this place for his maki roll addiction and I can see why.
S@kura is a cozy byob sushi place that serves some great fish. Whether you like their creative maki rolls, succulently fresh nigiri sushi or their signature don or teriyaki dishes, this place serves it all up fast and delicious.

I was the only one in the party to order nigiri that night, but perhaps I am the only one who wanted to try their fish naked and alone with nothing to interfere with the natural flavor. I ordered the Hamachi Toro, the Maguro and the Saba Nigiri. That is delicate pieces of Fatty Yellowtail Belly, Tuna and the Mackerel all served upon sushi rice. They were delicious. I also sampled the Salmon Avocado Maki, the Jimmy Roll and their decedent sweet dessert, the Banana Maniac (no fish in this dessert, just fried tempura coated bananas covered in a chocolate and caramel drizzle). Everything was great on the maki/dessert side too.

S@kura does things to fish that most people wouldn't even dare to do to themselves. This cozy byob sushi place is delicious, great for parties and has easily become one of my favorite sushi joints in Chicago.

I don't know how informed my review is going to be because coming here was the first time I've ever had sushi. Okay, that's a lie. I did have it once before, but it came from the Jewel. Then again that's like saying you're an expert boxer because you just watched Rocky IV. So yeah, first time eating sushi.

I came here as part of a group for a friend's birthday. I was one of the first people to arrive and our table was already set up. They were very prompt with the water, and when they saw that I brought my own beer with me they were quick to offer me a glass as anyone who drinks beer straight from the bottle is a Barbarian.

Being a newcomer to sushi, I thought the menu was very helpful. Each roll was described in informative and concise detail, and it even had symbols to tell you which ones were spicy in case you're a wuss who can't handle a bit of heat with his food. I ended up ordering the Dynamite Roll which is tuna and various other vegetables all rolled up into a plump circle of deliciousness. Of course since we were a big group, we all shared our rolls with one another so I managed to get a fair share of the entire menu, and I don't think I had a bad piece the entire night.

The dining area isn't much. Aside from a few Naruto posters, you may not notice you're in a Japanese restaurant. But with so many Sushi joints popping up like acne on a 13 year old, reminding us of the country whose food we're eating is just not necessary anymore.

So if you've been eating this stuff for a while, I'm neither recommending nor discouraging this place. But if you're a sushi newb like me, this might be a good place to start. They're very helpful to those who have no idea what they're about to put in their mouths, and best of all, it's cheap. I ended up taking a date there and the total came out to $25.

I had to take back my 5 star review due to my last experience. We were really rooting for this place and recommended it to friends but in this last visit so much has changed for the worse.

We went on Sat evening. There was a large birthday group who was so loud you could barely stand to be in there but it was the food and service that just killed it. We ordered the hamachi and tuna appetizers which were sloppily plated and tasteless. The cucumber salad had a drizzle of dressing and was dry and clunky. The worst part though was the speciality tuna roll itself had the consistency of baby food. Complete mush. The fish was mushy and the rice was way overcooked. The ebi was overcooked and the heads were not cleaned so you had poop coming out from them. Totally gross. The care and thought that this place had is gone. Totally inedible and we both felt sick afterwards. We tried a piece from everythign we ordered so 90% of our food was still on our plates when taken away.

The service was painful. Gone was the lovely owner's wife working the front who actually gave a sh*t and in place were two young and completely clueless kids that had NO idea how to wait on tables or etiquette. They kept bringing the wrong dishes to tables (including ours on 3 occasions) and there are only 8 small tables in this place!? When we asked for the sauce for the ebi he had no idea what it was and walked away. The server never asked how anything was (even though he kept taking away full plates of food) until the very end when I said really bad and he shrugged and walked away. $70 for dinner and we left starving. It's really sad to see a place go from genuine caring to total disregard. We won't be back.

For price and creativity, I have yet to find anything better than here. The signature and specialty maki are amazingly inventive for averaging $13-$16 per roll. And they're never fewer than 8 pieces. Of the nearly dozen times I've been here, my routine always involves starting with the spicy edamame and S@kura dips, followed by two random maki.

If your idea of sushi is a California roll or something else that I could buy at a grocery store, don't waste your time. However, if you love Mexican food and love sushi, you won't be disappointed. Heat exists here in so many ways.

Oh, and don't come here if aren't used to sitting next to people that you don't know. Even though last time I was in there I made reservations and just happened to run into people that we did know.

Just expect umami like never before and have zero expectations for everything else. Trust me. I can't stop coming here.

First time I visited S@kura was for my husband's B-D in June, and let me tell you the food here is amazing! It was a total of 8 of us and we weren't sure what to get so we asked Alfredo (owner) to surprise us. There wasn't a hot/cold plate that we had including sushi that was not good. Everything was fresh and delicious. I've had the appetizers, rolls, and stuff I don't even think is on the menu. I feel like I've visited this place 2 times a month since June. The place is BYOB and Alfredo and his wife Anya are great!

This place has very good tasting food and home to a lot of locals from what I've been able to see. It's BYOB and Alfredo is super accommodating and friendly. The prices are very reasonable. It's worth checking it out.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

That was some good sushi!!!! Very fresh, and I usually get nigri or sashimi. Some of their specialty rolls are so goooood. Wohooooo!

The only thing not fantastic was the egg rolls were veeeery greasy, but why even get egg rolls, eat sushi instead! Plus they do delivery and have fair prices. I would like to see some more appetizers. Salmon sashimi and crunchy tuna maki rolls were great. I think they should put some cooked menu items on there just because.

I order from here all the time, it's fantastic sushi, sashimi! The delivery people are always so nice.

I'm all for rooting for the small guy, but there are some standard rules to follow if a mom and pop store wants to succeed in a city where sushi restaurants come a dime a dozen.

- Be friendly to your patrons

-Be flexible, especially when they are the only ones eating in your entire restaurant. If you can not accomodate, be polite about it.

- Do not charge them a higher price than listed on the menu

-Do not be discourteous about the overcharge

- Salt your entrance/sidewalks or make sure that your property manager does so that your customers do not slip and fall (yeah, this happened to my friend while she was carrying her 1 year old daughter)

-Do not be rude to the injured customers...claiming that it's not your problem will probably equate to non-returning customers

To be fair, I will say some rolls are pretty good, (sexy chic, spicy tako)
but the way the owner/chef handled himself is unacceptable.

As this place is less than a 5 minute walk from me, I will be here again. Luckily, it's very good.

3 ppl. $20 a person with tip. Yes, I was a third wheel. :)

Appetizer - some type of sashimi white fish and jalapeno. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious.

We got 2 specialty roles and a tako (octopus). Everything was fresh and the service was great. I can't wait to come back and try the ramen.

S@kura has several of the standard vegan maki rolls: kampyo, avocado, shiitake, asparagus, oshinko and cucumber. I ordered the veggie lover silver entree, which included a choice of three of the above maki rolls plus miso soup. Unfortunately they did not give me my soup in the delivery bag.

The maki was not bad. They use a good amount of filling. The rice seemed rather loosely packed and the roll was cut thin, so it was more difficult to manage.

Some of the non-vegan rolls sound pretty interesting. I'm not a WoW player, but it's a little different from the norm. I might give this place another try, but I still like Hachi's better based on this experience.

I really wanted to love S@kura, but overall my experience was a bit fumbled.

The lighting of the place is much too dim. They had to bring out an electric mini lantern to assist with reading the menu.

The food took way too long to come out. somewhere from 30-40 minutes. We were a fairly large party ~7 people; but that is still much too long especially considering there were only two other small tables seated at the time.

The service was a bit inattentive. It was hard to flag people down, and getting their acknowledgment was much too difficult. The restaurant is not very big.

On the plus side, BYOB is great of course.

The prices are very well valued for sushi.

The pieces of sashimi were perhaps the biggest I have ever seen.

The fish was relatively fresh.

The rolls, although I hate the idea of rolls (what's the point of getting delicate raw fish if you are going to slather it in stuff to make the flavor undetectable?); the rolls were pretty tasty and better than most of the rolls I have eaten elsewhere.

So would I go back? Only if I had a friend in town that insisted in getting good, cheap rolls. Otherwise, I would not go back on my own volition.

When ordering delivery, use http://grubhub.com. Seems to work a lot better and faster than calling in. Delivery driver got the wrong address and now waiting over 90 minutes for order. Sushi is still great.

I am so happy that S@kura is in Logan Square.

I used to live in Wicker Park. A neighborhood where you can't turn around without bumping your ass onto a sushi restaurant (not to mention dry cleaners, or baby strollers.) So, I obliged the logical progression of a Chicago hipster and moved to Logan Square. Pretty lacking in the sushi department. Everyone has told me how much they like Hachi's but I think people dig it cause it's the only game in town.. er, neighborhood. When I went there I was unimpressed by the food and didn't dig the pseudo-chic decor. I was starting to miss my old haunts like Bob San, with it's House Crunch. Now there's S@kura, an amazing option.

First, it's super cozy. The second time I went there at 8 PM on a Saturday night, there was one other party in there. A few more tables walked in after us but for the most part it was nice and quiet. BYOB is also a major plus. The wait staff, super pleasant.

I generally go for the special maki rolls when and so far every one I've tried is spectacular and flavorful. I believe someone in an earlier review griped about the price of the special rolls, but the quality of the fish and ingredients, as well as the SIZE and quantity of the rolls make up for the price. My favorite rolls so far are the Warlock (despite it's funny name) and tonight I tried the Naruto Roll - mango wrapped spicy salmon, asparagus, tamago, tempura crumbs shichimi flakes and spicy sauce. This is everything I love about maki rolls it was bursting with flavor, rich and spicy! It was almost a little too big and messy.. but certainly not too much of a good thing.

I can't wait to try more of their rolls, but I think the Naruto is my new House Crunch.

Attention all fans of Wakamono--

Alfredo, a former chef of W@kamono, boogied out of there and opened this little gem a couple months ago. I now have other options on this stretch of Fullerton besides pizza from P@pa Ray's!

The sushi is quite good here. I appreciate the fact that many of the options are spicy, and in turn the rolls are filled with flavor. The Godzilla roll was wicked tasty and spicy. I made it a point to try at least one of the chef's specialty rolls and decided on the P'dodo roll. I didn't think it was as tasty as the Godzilla or even their soft shell crab roll (spider, i think?), but it was good nonetheless. The menu itself leans back somewhat towards a Japanese-Mexican theme. I am excited to return and try some of their ramen dishes.

My companion is not so skilled with the chopsticks, so the waitress brought out kid's chopsticks for her. It was heartwarming, embarrassing, cute, LOL-worthy, and thoughtful all at once. Almost similar to an afterschool special. The waitress won me over with that manuever, my friend not so much.

The service was attentive and friendly, and the chef came to our table and chatted us up for a bit. Aside from a curious odor upon entering, the decor is quaint and understated. There are cherry blossom decorations all over, but that would make sense if you call your restaurant S@kura.

FYI, they're open till midnight, which is awesome and how I happened upon this place. I got home from work around 9 one night and had a hankering for sushi somewhere close, and I found S@kura. Very fortun@te that I did. (sorry for the incessant @ usage)

It's hard to write an objective review of this fine establishment without some bias, but I'll give it a shot.

This Logan Square oasis is owned by lead chef Alfredo, who formerly helped get the--now too cool for school--Wakamono in Lakeview off the ground. The place hasn't been the same since he left (to put it lightly).

Thank goodness Alfredo opened his own (as another reviewer put it) unpretentious sushi restaurant in a place that needs it. Matter of fact, my better half and I ride our bikes 4 miles out of the way to visit this place. It's funny--I think we pass at least a dozen Japanese restaurants on our way, but it's well worth it. We'll be coming back at least once a month.

I can't wait to try all the rolls on the menu. However, I can't think of a better way to start and end a great meal there than with the fresh spicy miso soup and eclectic homemade ice cream. I also encourage you to strike up a conversation with Alfredo at the bar. He's one on the nicest humans I've ever met. He's probably also the one of the most interesting restaurateurs out there as well.

Note for newbies: a lot of the menu items are Japanese-Mexican fusion. I'll be bummed out if I see any snobs pretentiously blah-blahing about authenticity (like I tend to see on Yelp). If the latter is your cup of tea, go to Japan. Simply put, the food here is unique and tasty.

Also, while the decor is already excellent, it's still a work in progress. I can't wait to see what it looks like when I visit this month!

I asked the chef what he would get his mom if she were eating there. He mentioned a crispy tilapia dish they had. I'd already ordered my sushi, but I thought I'd let you guys know.

I ordered salmon avocado, because it's my favorite, and the chef and I chatted about sushi and thai in the neighborhood. We started talking about Hachi's Kitchen just down the way and he told me they use the same supplier of Scottish Salmon. He said the difference between his roll and theirs is that he puts in so much that he can't close the roll. He did not lie.

My sushi was full, very fresh and Dee-licious! Honestly, I woke up this morning and it was the first thing I thought of. I really hope this place makes it, because it's nice to have another quality sushi option in the neighborhood.

actually, writing this review has made me hungry. I'm going back right now!

This tiny (8 tables), unpretentious sushi restaurant is a welcome addition to Logan Square. The orange walls, red-tinted wall lamps and cheerfully artificial cherry blossom (sakura) decorations make the restaurant feel like a little neighborhood place in an anime.

S@kura is BYOB, and has the standard selection of nigiri and rolls, as well as many specialty rolls and some Latin-Asian fusion ceviche. The two of us splurged on veggie gyoza, gomae and twelve pieces of nigiri each; our bill was about $90. One could easily spend less, but when we eat sushi, we eat a LOT of sushi.

The servers were friendly and quite attentive. As a matter of fact, they gave us some complimentary plum wine ice cream after our meal--perhaps because we were such piggy...er, accomplished sushi eaters.

I heart Sakura.

We had dinner here tonight and were frankly surprised to have been blown out of the water by the incredibly fresh fish, the beyond wonderful service, and the generally good vibe of the place. We had the Godzilla and Sweet Alaska rolls along with handfuls of the freshest and most generously-cut nigiri pieces we'd had in ages. The decor is pleasant and we were glad to find that it was NOT the sort of place that makes you feel out of place if you're not wearing hot pants or a slinky cocktail dress.

Substitutions and special requests are welcome (what?!) and the BYOB reality means that you can enjoy twice the libations for half the price. Alfredo, the manager, came to our table to personally ask about how our food was, whether we had any suggestions or requests, etc. Our waitress was attentive and helpful but far from overbearing.

This place it top notch. Worth your time and your dime, a hundred times over.
