Very good lunch spot in Westport. Spotted Horse is an old house from the 1800s which is updated but fitted and decorated in such a way that pays tribute to the history of the house. Very big bar area, so I can imagine this being a fun Happy Hour spot.
Outdoor seating was a plus on the warm day- and I appreciated the awning that let us enjoy the outdoor air without the sunburn.
Everyone recommended the Lobster BLT, which did look delicious and contained a big portion of lobster. Â But, I went against the norm and got the chicken, Brie, and apple sandwich. There's just something about apples in a sandwich I am a sucker for, every time it's on the menu. It was delicious, very fresh, and the ciabatta bun was perfect, and still allowed me to eat the sandwich with my hands without too much of an embarrassing mess. Side salad instead of fries was key, as the sandwich was very filling.
Great service, too. Will definitely be back.
This is hands down one of the coolest places to eat in Westport! I have loved every single thing I have tried on the menu, and the staff is awesome. Great place to have lunch, dinner, or just swing by for a drink and sit at the bar. Reasonable priced, great food, great atmosphere. A++
Review Source:Wife and I went here for a change of pace.
The crowd is young and trendy, but the bar is not overtly so. Â
The wait was about an hour for dinner, but we expected that based on the crowd. Â We simply stood in the bar area and had several Martinis, which were excellent.
When we were seated, it did not take long to be served. Â My wife ordered the scallops and I had the lobster avocado sandwich. Â Both were delicious, and even though the place is pricey, we did not feel abused.
All-in-all, it was an excellent Date Night and we'll be back!
Take one heaping helping Little Pub, add in a dollop of faux Home Goods-like equestrian tchotchkes and horsey "art" (via Shanghai), groovy gaslight ambiance, then knit some chain-like, embroidered uniforms the waitstaff has to wear and there you have it: Â upscale diner kitsch.
The only thing  more mediocre than the meh,  uninspired pub grub is the street parking: Enough  for  maybe 3 Touregs or 2 Maseratis, not  both.
Arrived early, intentionally - around 5:30. Bar was already full but the restaurant was completely empty. Opened a tab and, with permission, sat down at a table in the bar. Chatting away with my guest, not even looking at menus yet. Waitress came by every 2 minutes - "and now?" We ordered three appetizers, one after another and continued to drink. The pressure from our waitress was continuous and obnoxious.
While the appetizers were decent, the service was so bad that we decided to eat elsewhere.
I stood up to put my coat on and the table was cleared, re-set and RE- SAT before our over-bearing waitress could even bring me the check!!! All as I stood at the table waiting. I should have simply walked out since they were treating me as if I was already gone anyway. Then, the checks were wrong and, the previously relentless staff was falling over themselves to apologize while they attempted to figure out what to bill me for.
Even if the food was spectacular - which it wasn't - the unbearably oppressive staff ruins the experience.
Go anywhere else if you wish to relax and enjoy the company with which you came!!
Juan was our server- he was phenomenal- gave us great suggestions and was very personable and kind.
George is the General Manager- and a great one at that. Â He saved us a spot at the bar after flying in from California... Â
I had the cucumber mint martini- and became addicted quickly. They are the best martinis I have had in a long while!! Â The Lobster BLT rocked my world, as did the Ahi Tuna App & Beet Salad.. My finance had the pork entree and said it was to die for.
Ambiance is spectacular- Â I love the photography and warm ambiance... Great for groups of friends, romantic dates, business meetings- anything.
5 stars- hands down. I will definitely return next time I am in Connecticut.
I've been here twice now. It is very nice and fun restaurant and bar. The food is very good, and the atmosphere is excellent. I had a seafood/suppe de pesca type entree and it was excellent. The wait staff was pretty good. I would definitely go there again. My only suggestion would be to allow some reservations.
Review Source:First about the dress code, ladies. Â Westport casual. Â This means skinny jeans. Â And I'm not referring to the cut, but to the person inside them. Â 0's and 00's rule the scene at the Spotted Horse. Â I'm sure the Horse's saddle and bridle together weigh more than some of these tortured creatures, made thin through painful attention to diet and double hot yoga classes up the road at Kaia. Â Throw on the kind of top that looks like you paid top dollar for it, Â show some cleavage, accessorize with bold jewelry (see J.Crew), Â and finally, try to hit on my date while he's buying me a glass of wine at the bar, and you will fit in beautifully. Â
At the Grey Goose, the Spotted Horse's fowl cousin, you can smell the desperation of the newly single (and not-so-single) 40 and 50 somethings, perched like vultures on their bar stools in search of flesh past its prime. Â The Spotted Horse has more children running around to soften the bordello patina of the Goose, poorly behaved primary schoolers decked out in Crew Cuts. Â
Now to the food--that IS what you came here for, isn't it? Â We ordered the lobster mac & cheese (which goes by another name, something clever and foody-sounding, but we all know what it is). Â You'd have to do something horribly wrong in the kitchen to f**k this dish up. Â And their execution was sublime. Â The other stuff was so-so. Â We ordered a pork chop to share, ordered medium, and we ought to have ordered is medium rare, though I doubt sparing the little porker from the flame for a few seconds would have rendered it tender. Â There's a little place up the road, Craft Butcher Shop. Â Their pork is the way pork used to be before it became "The Other White Meat". Â i.e. IT HAS FAT. Â That's what makes pork so tasty. Â
Lovely sidewalk dining. Â Much too much of a noisy scene inside to do anything other than talk trash about someone you know seated at the next table who maybe put on a few lbs. or needs to refresh her botox. Â So a fun little place, some nice food, shame about the locals.
Small plates but tasteful options throughout the menu. Â Salads are exceptional compared to other local establishments and the drink selection is tasteful as well. Â It's a scene for sure and has plenty of regulars developed at this point. Â Shame there are no reservations but then again, when people are lining up at the door is it required?
Review Source:The Spotted Horse is a very welcome addition to the downtown Westport dining scene.
I've only been for drinks and appetizers, but the space is very inviting, the ambiance  is casual sophisticated and the service is great.
I intend to return soon for a full meal. Â Another big hit from my old High School friend Kevin M.
Spotted Horse was a great place the first time I went. Â I sat outside with a friend and we had lunch and a cocktail. Â It was a good time, I was looking forward to meeting a few other people their for drinks the following Monday. Â I walked in and it was 3/4 full, nothing too crazy for a MONDAY. Â The older man let me know when the rest of my party was here, he would take us to a table....in the bar area. Â There wasn't a wait so I knew I would be sitting soon. My friend arrived and he sat us. Â He came a few minutes later with menus. Â I said that we would just be drinking. HE TOLD US THAT WE COULDN'T HAVE DRINKS IN THE BAR AREA. It was 8:30pm on a MONDAY. Â Then he suggested that we sit at the bar where there was one seat available. Â There were 3 in my party. Â Shocked as all heck, we left. Â I will never go there again, RUDE. Â I have worked in many restaurants and I have never been meant to feel like a piece of garbage then the night we went to Spotted Horse. Â I will not blame it on it being a Westport restaurant, I live in Westport and this has never happened.
Review Source:The horseshoe shaped bar is an excellent place to kick back and relax with a couple of Pomegranate Margarita martinis. The food is pricey, but the steak tips appetizer was filling and delicious.
Service is a little cool, but once we had the attention of our bartender, things went smoothly. The outdoor patio is nice, but it gets crowded and loud. I prefer the relative quiet of the bar.
I'll give them credit, the food is good (good, not great and definitely over priced for "good" food) and the interior is nicely decorated, but the service is terrible.
I work nearby and have been in several times for lunch and drinks after a long day. Â Service has never been fast and often takes a reminder or two for a refill or check. Â On two occassions we have been practically pushed out. Â Once, we were brought our check without even asking - it was not busy and there were several open tables nearby. Â We were going to order another round of drinks, but it seemed as if they didn't want us there. Â The next time was an extremely hot day and the inside was packed and there was standing room only at the bar so we opted to sweat it out and grabbed one of the tables from them mostly open patio. Â We were only there for drinks and warned the waitor that and he said it was not an issue. Â 30 minutes later he stopped by the table and said, "I don't want to be a jerk, but I need the table for people who want to order food." Â
Needless to say we will not be returning.
Nice outdoor patio, vibe reminded me of Pastis in NYC's Meatpacking District, but a rustic ranch version with 30s-40s crowd rather than French bistro with 20s-30s crowd. Food was good, we had steak tips with fries, mussels with creme fraiche mustard sauce (nice twist on the usual garlic and white wine), Caesar salad and tuna tacos. Lots of wines by the glass and good beer selection. If you want loud and people watching, sit inside or just mingle at the bar. We prefer the serene patio.
Review Source:This young restaurant is poised to do very well if they maintain a high level of service. Â We were a party of three that stopped in for lunch on a busy weekend without a reservation. Â The gentlemen behind the bar was super accommodating as the hostess was not around. Â We were able to grab a table in the bar. Â The ambiance in the bar is great. Â A beautiful exposed beam ceiling, tall tables, and a gorgeous marble bar. Â The dining room is very nice too. Â The menu is a great mix of small plates, salads, sandwiches, and entrees. Â price point is fair for southern CT. Â service was a little slow but they were slammed for lunch. Â quality of food was very good. Â Our group got the salad special, steak sandwich, and tuna wrap. Â All were fresh and good. Â The ahi tuna should have been sliced vertically instead of in chunks because it was hard to eat. Â But otherwise it was very good. Â Delicious bloody mary's too. Â phenomenal people watching as well - Bentley's, tiny dogs, diamonds, and all.
Review Source:What a great menu! Simple selection, yet with immensely complex and flavorful dishes. They had a great selection of Small Plates, Salads, Sandwiches & Burgers, and Main Plates. I believe the menu is the same for lunch and dinner.
I was there with my friend and it was lunch time, so we did not order too many things. I definitely have to go back and try more items on the menu. Their Black Truffle Burger and Gratin Of Bay Scallops were calling my name among other things....but my friend and I settled for their Chicken and Black Bean Empanadas and Open Face Steak Sandwich.
I think these are the best empanadas I have had in a long-long time. So crisp and crunchy was the crust, and inside was this delicious moist chicken with a wonderfully spicy kick. It was served with avocado puree and lime cream which perfectly complimented the Empandas' fried nature.
The Open Face Steak Sandwich was packed with strong flavors of red wine braised onions, grated horseradish and delicious fontina cheese. Served with a perfect salad on the side, this is a great lunch time option.
We HAD to have dessert! And of course we chose the chocolate mousse. It had a really cool delicately salty flavor to compliment the rich chocolatey mousse. If I am not mistaken, the desserts are being provided by Fritz Knipschildt of Chocopologie - so it was bound to awesome!
Went to Spotted Horse after dinner and we just had drinks at the bar. Â Of course anything new in Fairfield County is packed when it first opens and this bar is no different. Â It has a great, sophisticated "Western" feel and I will look forward to outdoor seating in the warmer weather. Â The bar was busy but even so the service was very slow. Â If you like Grey Goose in Fairfield, you will like this noisy, crowded scene that is all about people watching (but not necessarily the game....my boyfriend was hoping to catch some March Madness but he could only peek at the screen through a large flower arrangement). Â Loving all the beautiful new buildings in this historical part of downtown Westport!
