While visiting Seattle recently (staying at the Georgetown Inn) we decided to visit Stellar Pizza. Â The "Vegan Vale" pizza caught my eye, along with the list of drinks. Â The pizza was decent and the drinks were good - but what really pleased us, and what ultimately garnered the 5-star review from a tourist point of view, was the atmosphere and staff.
It's a funky, retro restaurant with colors and lights and pictures that create a fantastic vibe (especially while seated in rainbow-striped booths). Â The entire staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. Â They were happy to let us make modifications to our pizza and we received our food in a relatively timely manner for how busy it became around dinnertime. Â I felt welcome and cared for, which is sometimes a rarity in small, popular restaurants with plenty of other guests. Â
I will absolutely return to Stellar Pizza (and make sure I'm in Seattle any day other than Monday when they are closed) and highly recommend it as a wonderful local eatery that represents the culture of the Georgetown neighborhood.
Let me start by saying that this place used to be a 4-5 star place and now it has definitely slipped into the 2 star range. I have been to this place around a dozen times over the past few years and it has gotten progressively worse each time I go. The last time we went will be my last.
We came into the place and the sign said to seat ourselves (depending on how busy sometimes it asks you to wait to be seated). Upon selecting the only open booth (needed back support), we sat down and immediately noticed a peculiar smell. Since this is an older building we decided it wasn't bad enough to warrant complaint or moving. We sat for about 5 minutes until we were greeted with water and menus. Since we had already eaten dinner previously we were interested in grabbing a drink and some snacks. I ordered a cup of the soup and my girlfriend ordered a sandwich. My girlfriend got a cocktail and I opted for only water. We received our drinks and began talking and waiting for our food. During the time we were waiting for our food to the time we left, there were several things that bothered us.
1. We saw one of the waitresses cough into here hands several times and then turn around and grab orders and extra plates for customers without ever washing her hands. While she didn't touch the food, she did touch the extra plates that people would be using.
2. After taking out order, the waitress never stopped by the table again until our food was ready. We both ran out of water in the first 5 minutes (it was a HOT day) and didn't get refills. Now we could have stopped the waitress and asked but I often like to see how much they are paying attention and will put my empty glass at the edge of the table in clear view. We saw our waitress stopping to chat with her friends at a nearby booth for 7-10 minute periods at a time. She never once stopped by out table to see if we wanted to order more drinks or needed refills.
3. We heard our waitress complain several times that  she didn't want to be there and would much rather be at home. Trust me, we could tell.
4.The food took about and hour to arrive. Again we ordered soup and a sandwich. They were slightly busy but didn't seem to warrant the long wait. Once we got the food the disappointment continued. A different server than our original waitress brought the sandwich (which was good) and then asked if we had already eaten the soup (out waitress was again at her friends table and seemed oblivious our order was ready). We informed her we had not yet gotten it and she went into the kitchen to grab it. We watched as they put frozen cheese on the soup just prior to serving it. The soup was only luke warm and the cheese was still hard and partially frozen.
4. We finished our food rather fast as we were pretty hungry at this point. Once we finished we piled all the dishes together at the edge of the table along with our napkins and waited. It took about 15 minutes for our original waitress to come over and clear the table and we asked for the check. At this point in time she offered refills and we kindly declined.
5. The overall experience took about 2 hours!
While the pizza is still above average, the service has declined rapidly causing this place to be less than desirable. Even though we live less than a mile away, we will not be back.
This is pizza crust perfected. This is what other pizza aspires to be. This is, with no exaggeration, a reason to move to Seattle.
I've walked by this joint a dozen times and my only regret is not going in for a bite sooner. We had The Georgetown, a pizza with pepperoni, sausage, black olives, mushrooms, and onions. Unlike at other pizza places, the mushrooms and onions were cooked to perfection: the mushrooms had flavor in addition to texture (and not the standard slimey mushroom texture, either) and the onions were sweet, slightly soft and slightly crisp, mellow, and perfect. Boyfriend loved that the onion slices were big enough that he could easily remove them from his pizza and onto my plate. Actually, I loved that too.
The pizza was large and full of toppings and cheese, and although we finished the entire pie in one go (don't knock it 'til you've tried it) it didn't sit like a greasy gutbomb that ruins the rest of your evening.
Where the pizza really shines, however, is the crust. Flaky, crispy, full and fluffy, this is literally the best pizza crust I've ever had. Ever. And that's from someone who loves pizza in all its forms!
They have a small but excellent selection of beers on tap, and they're offered at $4.75 a pint when it's not happy hour - cheaper when it is. I can't wait to go back and indulge in a Dick's Danger Ale and their cheesy bread and pizza slices at happy hour (3-6 pm daily).
Even better - our waitress was attentive even though we were the only folks out on the patio. Our dog enjoyed sitting on the patio with us while we ate, and the patio setup had enough space between tables that he didn't have to sit directly under our feet while we ate. Brilliant. This place is doing everything right, and has just catapulted its way into my heart. My ooey gooey pizza-loving heart.
Pretty standard pizza, maybe a half-step up from the major chains. But, it is very close to my house and last Sat night I was feeling lazy so I called in an order for pickup (around 8:30pm, they officially close at 11). They told me it would be ready in 25-30 minutes. So I wait a 25 min before walking over to pick up my pizza only to be greeted by a handwritten sign on the door that they "have to close early tonight. Sorry." Â There were plenty of employees still inside but they wouldn't answer the door when I knocked. Nothing worse than getting dissed by a place you're not even that into. Insult to injury. So, I would have given them 3 stars but minus one for the unprofessionalism. Boo!
Review Source:THIS IS THE BEST PIZZA - EVER! Â Love this place. Â I'm a Root Beer drinker, but I know our friends appreciate the great Beer selection as well.
The staff is great and the atmosphere is relaxed, which means also that you need to be patient. Â These pizza's aren't ready and sitting there, they are made to order and you may need to wait a bit to get them. Â But they are worth the wait. Â
The Beannie is the biggerst pepperoni pizza you can find and you may only need one slice to fill up, but eat two. Â It's worth it.
Been going a while and the beer and pizza for which I go here has been consistently great every time. I'll add calzone's as well, and they are huge. The sandwiches look good, but I have never gotten one, and honestly prob never will, Â pizza and beer is just too good.
Has a family section if you happen to have young ones, and a bar section nicely separated with some booths and tables if you don't.
Service can be a little slow, but as long as you take a relaxed attitude about it, order a beer before you need one, understand a handmade pizza takes a little bit of time, it's a good night out.
Decent food, good beer list, great for kids, but I really wish they had more (ok, any) options for gluten intolerant folks. I asked the server for a sandwich without bread or if they had any options and she said "well, the kitchen is really busy, so probably not today." Â really? Â I'm not doing this to be cute...It ended up working out fine in the end- I ate some salad and then had my own food that I had brought along.
The kids loved the toys in the back.
I work in the Georgetown area and have heard good things about Stellar. I tend to eat lighter during lunch, salads and sandwiches versus pizza, so I took a looksie at their online menu and was delighted to see they have a wide range of salads.
I debated the Greek salad but I am work-conscious and didn't want to create a mini Greece scentorama at my desk so opted to get the Goat Salad instead. Mixed greens, walnuts, tomatoes and red onion topped with goat cheese crostini and a house made balsamic vinaigrette. Yes please!
I purchased this as delivery so I didn't see the final salad until I was back at my desk. Romaine lettuce. Okay, fine, I am not gonna cry about it. NO goat cheese crostini, instead the amount of one package of cheese. No one needs that much plain goat cheese! Especially because the walnuts are not sweet like I hoped and the balsamic dressing is tangy and not sweet as well. This salad is tart overall and the joy of a good goat cheese salad is a mix between sweet and sour. Throw in some craisins next time, guys, SOMETHING.
The kicker wasn't any of that though. I am not a baby. I can handle the wrong lettuce, the lack of delicious listed ingredients, I can even handle that it doesn't taste that good.
I almost broke my tooth on a walnut shell. So that wasn't fun.
Plus side is the salad is huge! Share it with everyone you know while reciting a lengthy disclaimer about how it's not very good!!
I'll have to try the pizza.
Ah, Stellar pizza....a unique kinda joint.
First, I am pretty particular about my pizza, so for most people you might want to add a star. The pizza is good, but for me, nothing so good I would drive out of my way. I do like their sauce, has a great flavor. The crust could be a tad bit thinner for my taste, but ok.
It's not the cheapest pizza out there, but it isn't the most expensive either. All in all, its decent.
The biggest hangup I have is their service...its generally slow even when it's not that busy. It can be painfully slow when they are busy....so be forewarned.
Also, every once in awhile there seems to be a 60 year old Boy George wannabe that wanders the restaurant....I am told he is something of a local celebrity in Seattle. You can keep the autograph.
Went with coworkers last week for an after work happy hour birthday celebration. They had pizza by the slice and some various appys on the HH menu.
Everyone got a slice of either cheese or pepperoni (the only options) and we also sampled hot wings, Mac and Cheese, and the hummus plate.
Hummus plate: huge, tasty, worth $7
Pizza: good, but nothing special
Wings: sauce was great, but the chicken was very fatty an the wings were pretty small.
Mac & Cheese: this has to be the most tasteless thing I have ever tried!!! The cheese tasted like NOTHING! It had a dried out chalky flavor of low-fat cheese that had been over warmed in a microwave and then left to cool. YUCK.
Service: amazing! The ladies were prompt and friendly, and quick to take orders.
Overall, I'd go back for happy hour and get hummus, beer, and maybe a slice. That is, if I find myself in the area... which rarely happens.
Great place to hang out and the staff don't pressure you to leave. On the other hand, they're so laid back that after about a half an hour they never come by again to see if you want anything more. The pizza is decent, though sometimes a by-the-slice order is cold and tastes like it's a day or two old.
Review Source:I had an epic night here about a year ago. Â Me and about a dozen friends rolled in for some pre-gaming for a Georgetown party. Â We took over the back room (ok ok, we were allowed to I guess) with the pool table and old vending machines, and threw back beers and slices for a few hours. Â I recall the beer well, and the pool, but not the pizza. Â I imagine it was delicious, though.
The big thing for me here is that the decor at Stellar Pizza is perfect. Â It really feels like being in a hip 1950's pizza shack, even though that's just something I made up right now. Â I guess the great thing about nostalgia is that you can create a past that didn't already exist. Â I think that's what's going on at Stellar. Â
Kudos, Stellar! Â I'll be back soon.
I came here last night with some friends, and once I got here I realized I'm pretty sure I've been before, but it's been years. I'm glad I rediscovered it, though.
We shared a whole pizza and a large Caesar salad. After much deliberation, we chose the E-27 Firefighter Pie (Salami, green peppers, red onions & black olives). My dining companions wanted to add jalapenos, but we got half without so my mouth didn't catch on fire. There were a lot of other topping combos I wanted to try, too, but this one was a good choice.
The server brought me my beer (Old Seattle Lager) saying "Here's your PBR!" and after a bit of confusion he realized he brought me the right beer, but called it the wrong thing. No biggie (and let's be real, I don't turn down PBR even if it's not my first choice!), and the service was good overall.
It's definitely not an incredibly inexpensive pizza joint; a whole pie is almost $30, which seems a little crazy. But it's good, so there you go.
I am a bit biased as I don't love pizza but I do eat it and have had fantastic pizza throughout Italy, deep dish in chicago and really like more thin crust pizza than thick crust.
Having never been to Georgetown - I went with a group of friends. Â The menu was reasonable but mainly pizza, a few salads and pastas. Â Not a lot which would suit a low-carb diet. Â The beers looked good - but as we drove 20 minutes from seattle to get here - we could not drink. Â
The pizza took 30 minutes and was mediocre at best. Â Large, huge portion with tons of toppings but the toppings were not unique and were just thrown on haphazardly and unevenly - with big clumps of olives in some spots and no toppings in others and the taste was just okay -. Â I have had better at serious pie, via tribunali, pagliacci's and tutta bella, delaneys by far and these had substantially higher quality ingredients and taste. Â
The atmosphere was unique and kinda dive-like - biker bar- ish with interesting older type music.
The service was terrible - everybody had eaten half their pizza and I still did not have my salad 40 minutes later - the kitchen or waitress had forgotten the order. Â She did not apologize or comp the salad. Â The cobb salad was not particularly good and was covered with so much onion and dry chewy chicken that I could not even eat it when it came out. Â The caprese salad was oily and bland. Â Not only that -when refilling our ice tea -the waitress poured ice tea all over my husband's lap and jeans without apologizing. Â As there were more than 6 of us - she put in an obligatory 18% tip on the bill and then bitched at us when we were 4 dollars short for the 300 dollar bill - which she could not give us separate bills for. Â Honestly? Â
Bad service, a long drive, rather creepy industrial part of town at night and mediocre food really underwhelming food. Â The bill for us for two ice teas, half a pizza, a salad, caprese appetizer and 6 wings came to 55 dollars.
There are much better places in seattle with more atmosphere, better prices and substantially better taste. Â Heck - delivery pizza beats the pizza at this joint hands down.
I would never go back ever -
I had just walked out of the bathroom on a mission to return to my table. Â A man who had just walked through the restaurant door asked me, "Do we just seat ourselves?" Â I looked at him, nodded *yes*, remarked with an "uh-huh" and smiled. Â I pondered as to why he asked me such a question. Â I wasn't wearing a name tag. Â Maybe he thought I was a regular? Â I returned to my table and told my fam member what had just happened. Â "Did he think you worked here?" Â "I dunno!" I replied and we laughed.
Our server was very cool and friendly. Â I think they were understaffed because he was running around from table to table and behind the bar. Â I ordered the lasagna with Greek salad. Â The garlic bread that came with the meal tasted bland. Â The lasagna was good. Â The Greek salad didn't have any lettuce. Â Lettuce is soooo American. Â
Come here with an open mind. Â Don't expect your food to come out right away so just chill out, pick some songs from the jukebox, down a beer, and have a good time.
This is a great place to go for lunch - always crowed with the lunch rush - best to go before or after it gets busy - but with all the construction, seating is plentiful! The lunch specialty of pizza and salad is best for people with limited time - but if you have time, try the shells - to die for in all their cheesy glory! I love their seasonal salad - the best strawberries of the summer! And their cashew chicken salad sandwich is awesome - the salad version as well!
Also, for all you Coke -loving fans, they have Coke and Diet Coke in a can on request.
I've only been here one time, and with all the other kick ass pizza joints in Seattle I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon.
Service was good (4/5). Â
Beer list was also good (4/5). Â
The entertainment value of the pizzalero in the kitchen tossing dough was awesome (5/5). Â
The food was mystifyingly bland (1/5).
Irony in restaurant name (5/5)
We ordered the Pesto Cheese Bread as an appetizer and the Ellis Italian Pizza for dinner. Â The Feta on the cheese bread had no flavor. Â I've run restaurants and worked as a chef for years and never encountered feta this bland. Â I will also admit I was surprised that a pizza place would use a 6" French roll for cheese bread rather than pizza dough, but hey, to each their own. Â
The Ellis Italian Pizza was 16" of pure disappointment, because again, it was incredibly bland. Â Sausage, Red Peppers and Garlic should all have assertive flavors , but not on this pie. Â I applied a touch of salt at the table, and still couldn't coax anything out of those toppings. Â We each had a piece and took the rest to-go, why, I'm not really sure.
Working in the restaurant business for years I understand that a restaurant usually appreciates honest feedback at the time of the meal if something is wrong as long as it's delivered politely and honestly. Â I suspect cheap, commodity grade ingredients were to blame rather than missed steps in recipes or anything the staff had control over. Â With the prices charged at Steller Pizza there must be room to upgrade the ingredients. Â Your customers will notice the difference!
People seem to love this place. Â Maybe that's because they haven't discovered some of the absolute best pizza in Seattle is right around the corner at Via Tribunali.
Great Pizza and atmosphere. This is our second visit and this time we brought the kids, so had to sit in the family section. I have to say the service and atmosphere is better on the adult/bar side but still fine. The have both PBR and Rainer. Don't forget to ask for the Rainer bottle caps.
It's close to downtown without all of the hassle. Great stop before a sounders or mariners game.
Can't go wrong with any of the pizzas and the greek salad is great.
SUPERCALIFRIGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS!! Â
If you're looking for a place to gather with friends or celebrate life, look no further! Â
I recently had a gathering of family and close friends to help me celebrate my graduation from UW at Stellar Pizza and can't enough about this place! Â The staff was more than accommodating and attentive to my party of 13, the atmosphere eclectic and exciting, and the food, simply fabulous. Â And this, on one of their busiest nights being jammed packed with Georgetown Carnival attendees! Â I was floored as things were winding down, that our waitress came up and thanked us for being so patient! Â Are you kidding me?! Â The best service I've had in a long time in Seattle!!!
I easily made reservations on line (recommended for large parties) and gave them a pre-order with specific times for getting the food on the table. Â This made my party a roaring success not having to deal the minute details. Â
And for all those reviews that compare Stellar's pizza with Chicago Style pizza, not even close! Â It's somewhere in between New York Style and Chicago Deep Dish, more towards NY Style as you can pick up your slice of pie and fold it half-like it's done in the Big Apple!
I know at least one person who considers this the best pizza in Seattle, and he's a maniac for good food, so take my indifference with a grain of salt.
This is a very fun and cool place to hang out and have a beer and eat some pizza. They have a bar and restaurant side, so kids can tag along. It's in a very cool reclaimed space--gotta love Georgetown and what a great job this neighborhood does of reusing existing buildings to float new businesses.
The place has two big rooms. The all-ages side has tons of tables with bright orange plastic chairs; the bar side is a mishmash of booths and tables laid out around a cool rounded bar. The decorations are pretty much a mishmash of whatever they could find at a good price, with an eye toward making it feel like there's a mid-century space-race vibe happening. There's seating in a little fenced-off sidewalk section out front, complete with water dishes for the pups.
The service is super friendly and funny and cool; it's all a bunch of pierced and tattooed kids ranging from rockabilly types to people who probably have art spaces within a couple blocks of here. (I hate to reduce people to types, but some people really do wear their clique ID on their sleeves--still, they're awesomely fun and great at their jobs.)
The wine and cocktail lineups might or might not include much of any big interest, but they're definitely trying to get some kegs that not everybody has. The beer lineup has a nice variety, dark and light, forceful and restrained, and so on. They're really programming kegs for a wide variety of palates, not just throwing stuff behind the faucets.
The food unfortunately is just OK. Maybe I came in hoping it would be distinctly above average, having heard the hype, and put too much pressure on it or something. The caprese was definitely lacking in flavor. Comes out with some herbed, limp, un-toasted bread. Maybe it was a little stale from the day being a little warm yesterday, but it didn't add anything either with the caprese or as a mop-up. The tomato, cheese, and basil all tasted stale or otherwise underpowered, and the tomatoes were oddly oversweetened, so the effect of the dish was just a mushy mouthful of tomato sugar. Not the explosive flavors you want from this dish, and we didn't even finish half of it.
We had the Ellis pizza. The hand-tossed crust has good flavor and is nice and chewy, but it's just a huge mouthful of bread in the end because it's so heavy. I like some heavy crusts now and then, but you really have to turn the whole thing into a lasagna when you have a heavy crust, so a couple slices feel like more than a meal in terms both of how full you are and how sated the flavors leave you. These guys are looking for a light touch with the toppings, and the crust ends up overwhelming what's on it. The Ellis has some incredibly mild sausage on it, some red peppers that didn't add much other than sweetness, and some very intermittently applied roast garlic that didn't really light up with flavor until the next morning.
These guys definitely know what they're doing, but it seems like they need to bump up the quality of their ingredients a little to get across the flavors and the impact of the recipes. Still, I'd happily hang out here again. If I opened a pizza place, I'd want it to be a lot like this. They have the vibe and the approach exactly right.
It was a little bit of a drive over here from downtown, but we wanted to check out the photo booth and stop in for a snack.
I guess we will go back on our next trip to Seattle to try the pizza since it seems to be a popular place. We did try the jalapeno artichoke dip and that item was my girlfriend's favorite entree while in Seattle on vacation. So give that a try on your next visit to Stellar.
The pizza is good, with a lot of different options for toppings and different 'styles' of pizza as well. Â Beer selection is nice. Â Usually not too busy, meaning not much of a wait for a table (been here a few different times with little wait)
However, to get here you have to go to Georgetown, you have to find the place (try not to get back on I-5, as basically everyone does their first time), and if you have a stomach like my sister, her husband, a few friends, and myself there is a chance you will be visiting the restroom sooner rather than later......is it worth it??? Â Yep, once in a while.
This is one of my absolute all time pizza joints in Seattle. Â My husband thinks I'm nuts. We have the epic ongoing pizza debate about what is the most important aspect of good pizza. Â I like thin crust, loads of goat cheese and mushrooms and veggies, and he likes doughy crust with lots of meat. Â If you are like me, you will like Stellar. Â If you are like my husband, you will not. Â The good news is, you can get a big fat calzone.
Top menu choice: Â The "Carleton". Omg mouthwatering toppings. Â Even better as leftovers.
I love their beer selection as well, and they serve Dick's Danger Ale (and other local favorites) by the pitcher. Â The pizza is a tad expensive but the pies are pretty big and pitchers of beer are cheap.
Ayyye, this is a kewl late nite bite, yo. My half vale vegan pizza was really good and looked it. I wasn't sure about the beer so I asked my waitress, Bridey (brye-dee), about something and she was more than happy to offer me some tastings. Sweet! She came back and I was thinking about tasting a ho, so she brought me one of that, too. That's 3 + 1 = 4 total tastings and free! She was great and a charming lady. I was feeling something dark, so I went with a dicks danger ale schooner. The space is... well it's already been spoken for. :P It's cool and all that divey-jazz.
As the receipt says, my server was bad ass.
Mmmmm Stellar...
It's been a few years since I've been here, but I remember it being a wonderful company party (small company) where we enjoyed lots of pizza, everyone except me enjoyed the beer (I was under 21), and fun was had playing pool in the back.
I held back reviewing until now (a day when I had it for lunch), however, because I couldn't really remember what I thought of the food and I just can't rate a restaurant without considering the food..
The pizza we had today was the White Orca (artichoke hearts, onions, roasted garlic & feta cheese on an olive oil base). It was quite different than the pizza I had at Via Tribunali last night, but it sure was dang good and those slices were HUGE. About 1.5 pieces took me from feeling stomach-almost-growling hungry to feeling almost too full (but still finishing the last half b/c it was way tasty).
Not really my favorite, but definitely good... and definitely worth returning to next time I'm craving some pizza in Georgetown.
I love the Eggplant Rustica. It's a grinder style sandwich that quite simply, makes me happy I'm alive.
Large hunks of breadcrumbed eggplant, covered in a chunky tangy marinara, and sandwiched lovingly into a massive french baguette. For the green salad that comes along side (if that's your poison), I suggest the balsamic dressing.
For $10 w/tax this is probably one of the best lunch/ dinner deals in the city. This would have run me $12-15 anywhere else.
God I love this place. Sit at the bar if you go when you're alone. There will be no shortage of fun banter between the staff and the regulars... just bring a willingness to chat it up and you'll be good.
I'm pretty sure a frozen pizza takes almost 20 minutes to bake in the oven at home, so if I have to wait 10 more minutes for the fresh stuff I think I can handle it.
Especially when the pizza is amazing as Stellar's. What a name to live up to, right?
It's straight up pizza pub from the second you walk in the door. Bar to one side, family friendly to the other. There is a room in the back with a pool table. There is a cheesy pinball machine by the bathrooms. Equally cheesy beer signs decorate the walls. Booths and tables litter the interior.
A huge laminated menu graces your presence. Appetizers and pizza stuff on one side. Salads/soups, pasta, and sandwiches on the other. Everyone will find something to eat on here, I promise. You pay for what you get, too. These aren't salads for the diet inclined. You're getting almost a head of lettuce per plate.
I love the half a pizza idea. You don't have to pick between three different sizes. You want eight slices? Get a whole pie. You want only four? Get a half. It's that simple. The prices are reasonable, too. I think the most expensive pie I saw was $14 for a half. $3.50/slice? Perfect.
There are a bunch of awesome combinations on that menu, too. I really had a hard time deciding. Do I want canadian bacon, chicken, and gorgonzola? Do I want goat cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, fresh mushrooms & fresh garlic on a basil pesto base? There are too many choices. Ultimately two halves were settled on. Yukon golds, gorgonzola, and sweet onions on one half; Pepperoni, Italian sausage, mushrooms, black olives & onions on the other. That works out to $3.13 per slice for those of you keeping track at home. These slices are huge. These slices are freshly made. These slices have all the dough I could possibly want. They meld that perfect balance of fluff to crunch. I'm not chewing raw dough, but I'm not busting my braces off. It's absolutely perfect.
Delicious. Absolutely delicious. I really have only had this caliber of pizza at Pizza Oasis in PDX, so I'm glad I can get my fix no matter which city I'm in. The service was slow-ish, but it's a pizza place. They post on the menu that it's going to be AT LEAST 25-30 minutes per pizza.
Fresh baked goods take awhile to cook? You don't say. It's worth every moment. If you need to, order an appetizer or a salad. It's no big deal.
The entire table was happy, except for me. I was sad to see the last of the potato, onion, and gorgonzola pizza go. I could have easily eaten a whole pizza of it. Were I to live in Seattle, you can bet your ass I'd be buying halves of pizzas all the time. It'd be perfect for dinner + breakfast the next day for cheap.
Next time, beer and sitting in the bar. The bummer about the family friendly side is the ridiculous juke. Several instances made me want to kill myself.
(PS - Please stop using those rotating cloth towel things in the bathroom. They creep me out to no end. I'll even take a silly blow dryer at this point.)
For my 21st birthday, I decided to start my Georgetown bar crawl with dinner at Stellar Pizza with my family and friends.
Because I'd been there a few times before and had experienced some pretty long wait times for our food, we decided to pre-order our pizza the week before.
We wanted to prepay for the pizza so all my drunk friends could just pay for their bar tabs the night of. When I called to place my order, the woman on the phone asked me to have my mom come in and pay for everything a few days in advance.
She drove up from Covington just to make the payment. When she arrived she spoke with the owner who told her she could not prepay and that "no other restaurant in Seattle would let her do so either". Â (wait, what?)
My poor defeated mom left without paying and cancelled the party because of the customer service (or lack there of) she experienced.
Then....
The owner of Stellar made a point of calling me TO TELL ME HOW RUDE MY MOTHER WAS!
Who does that? To MY mother! The nicest, soft spoken little Japanese lady EVER. Srsly.
Long story short: the food is ok, the service is mediocre on a good day, wait times are looooong, and now that there are so many other options in Georgetown...I stay away.
I am usually a "star-whore" (that who gives away many stars, not a star in the oldest profession in history league). Â I'm pretty laid back and sometimes, great service convinces me to give an extra star to a place despite of the food not being out-of-this-world. Â But the problem with this place is that the food is not exactly "stellar" and the service is robotic...even though the restaurant is very, very, very cool.
The BF and I went today for lunch. Before sitting down, the waitress was a tad bit nice and let us know there was a 25-30 minute wait for pizzas. Â I found that very considerate. After a brief moment of doubt, we decided to sit and enjoy a salad before our pie came out.
You would expect that half-a-pie that takes 40 minutes to be cooked will blow your mind. Â My mind stayed quiet throughout the entire meal, wondering where was the fuzz hiding. Â
Salads are gigantic. Â We had a half-order of Cesar salad and it was enough to feed both of us (being the boy a 6"2' handsome with a good appetite). Â Nothing special. Â Just a plain, forgettable Cesar salad. Â
We looked at the drinks menu for a while. It's pretty extensive. Stellar does a great effort to offer all kinds of beers, especially those brewed in the city. The have Arrogant Bastard and Beagle and many others, mostly all of these accompanied by cool descriptions like "brewed across the street in Georgetown". Â Nice touch.
The pie we ordered was the Ellis Italian Pizza. Â From the moment we put the first bite in our mouths, we felt there was something missing. Â We spent minutes deconstructing the flavor and our verdict was: bland. Â The dough was too chewy and with no flavor, the tomato sauce was too sweet and the sausage was borderline flavorless. Â There was something spicy on the pie, I can't exactly tell. Â But spicy doesn't necessarily translates into flavor. Â It didn't on this pizza. Â I'm a troglodyte who almost licks her plate clean when I like what I'm eating. Â Here, I had to make an effort to finish up just one slice.
We are going to go back to try the other items on the menu and to try some of the beer on their great selection, but we are done with the pizzas. Â We were underwhelmed and sad, because this place is great and we agreed on the fact that it adds a lot to Georgetown. Â The only think that became annoying regarding the ambiance, was the excess of country music, saved (thank God!) by occasional Johnny Cash songs. Â
Stellar...add some salt to your dough, change some of those country discs in your jukebox for something more lively and make your service a bit less impersonal. Â Please? Â I REALLY want to give you more stars. Â Maybe next time.
Here's how they made my night without even making me pizza:
1. Big group, in costume, with a 3 year old. No eyes batted, promptly given best booth.
2. Big pint of Real Root Beer (had to drive)
3. Crayons all around and a sheet to color that says, I sh*t you not, "HEY KIDS! Tell your parents to buy more beer"
4. Waitress forgot to put our order in, but when she realized her mistake, she (a) fessed up (b) offered to take money off the bill (c) brought us leftover dark chocolate raspberry birthday cake. I cannot think of anything that says "I'm sorry" better than cake.
5. Gol' dang it, they're open past ten and serve what smells like VERY edible eats.
6. The aforementioned 3-year-old fell asleep in her pizza. Wait staff cleaned up around her without complaint.
7. It's "unpretentious," but they've heard of bleach.
We were like the three little bears, but we were four. Â And not just bears, but guys with growly tummies like Pooh. Â We were looking for food and beer and nothing seemed to fit. Â Eventually we ended up at Stellar Pizza and Ale in Seattle's Georgetown.
We had a late night meal consisting of hot wings, cheese bread, meatball calzone, and tapenade. Â For drinks, we ordered two pitchers: Manny's and Arrogant Bastard. Â Each pitcher yielded 4 glasses.
The food was good and the calzone was HUGE! Â I gave a third of the calzone to my friend who desired pizza but settled on garlic cheese bread. Â The sauce was zesty and may have had crushed red pepper as an ingredient. Â Not too hot or spicy enough to keep you from enjoying it though. Â
The decor is late night diner meets Fremont's Deluxe Junque meets my grannie's kitchen. Â Perfect for this place. Â The servers are attentive, helpful, and personable. Â
For our meal and bar tab, plus tax and 20% tip, it ran about $20 a person when we split it up. Â
They do have a kids' menu and I believe they do take out orders too.
The downside was their hours were 'til midnight. Â This would have been perfectly adequate, but I felt slightly rushed to eat, drink, and get out. Â Also, a couple of us felt kind of hot in there under the bright white bulbs suspended over our table.
Also, parking is available in a small lot on the north end of the building or you could find it on street. Â Just remember this is an industrial area generally, so you will find pot holes, gravel alleys, etc. Â Leave the Benzo with the 22" Dubs at home because they will get trashed on ill-paved Georgetown streets.
Lastly, if you are in a group, Stellar only does one credit card per table, so plan accordingly. Â There is a ATM in the joint, but it does charge $1.50 transaction fee. Â So again, plan accordingly.
Just when I thought I had a beat on Seattle - it's vibe, little shortcuts to take, good neighborhood joints and restaurants - Georgetown comes along and give me a big ol' swirlie.
G'town is a funky little neighborhood in the south part of Seattle and has some great food and drinking places.
Stellar has some great pizza, cold beer and great staff. Tons of toppings selection and they don't skimp either.
Let's keep it simple:
I've been here or carried out dozens and dozens of times.
Great food. Great drinks. Great place for a date or a group of friends or a family get together.
Trust me. I wouldn't lie to you. They even give you dumdums. Can it get any better?
P.S. I deducted one star because the sauce is too sweet.
