I'm really looking forward to mowing down some of the delicious looking al pastor tacos they have roasting on a spit in this place (20 tacos for 30 bucks!), but for now I have a hard time getting over just how unbelievable their chilaquiles are.
They soak piles of handmade tortillas in this gorgeous creamy, spicy green sauce until it's more like an insanely delicious Mexican breakfast lasagna than the lifeless corny egg dish most taquerias offer up.
Topped with fluffy scrambled eggs, sour cream and onions alongside fluffy rice and refried beans, the chilaquiles here are pretty much a revelation. My lady friend tried the version with the red sauce and it was good, but the ones with the green sauce are better than anything I have had for breakfast on any of 3 trips to Mexico. If they sold this in a bottle, I very well might bathe in it.
With an uncommonly friendly staff and great prices, there's a good reason this place is swarmed with local Mexican families on the weekend. An authentic gem in the Lawrence and Montrose UN Corridor.
I can't complain about this place; the prices were great, the food was tasty with fresh veggies, and the service was great and fast. I know I got more for my buck than I would have at a chipotle or other restaurant. Under $6 for a huge burrito and I could have got fires and a drink for the amount I would spend at another place. I would totally give them another try.
Review Source:Living a hop, skip, and a jump away from here is dangerous. For my waistline, my rapidly deteriorating cooking skills... among other things.
Taqueria San Juanito is awesome. Spacious, plenty of parking, friendly service, affordable-- yes, it is cheaper than buying groceries and making dinner-- definitely BYOB, close to the brown line, and, oh, the food.
That green salsa. Oh man. I cannot say enough amazing things about that green salsa. I've never encountered it anywhere else and beg the staff for extra containers every time I carry out... or dine in and, inevitably, am laden with piles of leftovers. Creamy, bright green, mild, and a little tangy, this salsa is the condiment of my dreams. From what I can tell (or wheedle out of the proprietors), it's an avocado-based salsa verde. The buttery avocado smooths out the vinegary spiciness of the peppers but still retains a pleasant kick.
As far as meat, San Juanito's al pastor is the way to go. Slightly sweet, fatty enough to stay moist, and flecked with bits of caramelized onion, order it topped with cilantro and raw onion. Their chorizo, my Mexican food staple, is also great and a little unusual compared to other renditions I've tasted. Crumbly and spicy, it has a slightly sweet, cinnamony undertone to all the usual savoriness.
For vegetarians, San Juanito's offers a chile relleno taco. I don't think the textures jive perfectly but it's definitely something I haven't seen many other places. A warm tortilla is filled with a lightly egg-battered poblano, filled with melted cheese, and topped with the usual cilantro ribbons and onion.
Excellent for carry-out and definitely a pleasant experience for dine-in, I'm happy to add San Juanito to my list of usual neighborhood haunts.
I went here merely after reading what seemed to be great reviews. Complete opposite of what I expected. The place is a hole in the wall. The food was terrible and the prices were outrageous. I ordered to-go and the lady forgot my queso for my chips. My beef for my enchiladas looked like it was chewed up and spitted out onto my to go box. I did asked the lady if it was ground beef or shredded. She said shredded. That's why i ordered it. The enchiladas had to cheese sauce, just melted cheese. I also ordered the cheese enchiladas and it was just shredded cheese blend. Softened, not melted. Terrible. I also ordered 2 beef tongue tortas and it was just mayonnaised filled with wilted iceberg lettuce. The pico was brown instead of fresh vibrant colors. Â Also very bland. I would never, ever go to that place again.
Review Source:I think I've been to most of the Mexican restaurants in Albany Park, and this is my favorite. A huge burrito for $4-7, and every meal is served with unlimited chips with three different salsas. The cheese/ham/pineapple quesadilla is really great too. Service and atmosphere is very predictable and comparable to other little places in the neighborhood, but the food is much better than average.
Note that they have a $10 minimum for using cards.
i think i've officially tried every mexican joint in AP - and this is by far my favorite. Â
fast, cheap, delicious - always what the doctor ordered.
love taking my food to go, but dine-in is always a great choice because the chips and salsa they serve are awesome...
burritos are 2 meals, easily, and the taco dinner is my favorite - 3 tacos + rice and beans w/cheese. Â
try something new every time you go, you'll never be disappointed.
The best spit roasted Pastor going in AP right now! I love this place. I really do.
If you're coming to AP for Korean tacos, there are other places that make that great. At this place it's all about the traditional and authentic. Recipes passed down from generation to generation.
I especially like their green salsa. It has an avocado base but still brings some nice, balanced heat.
This place is flying a little under the radar right now. But, hopefully people will take notice. With this place and the new creperie, Kedzie is becoming quite the strip.
Very close to the brownline and the gym(???) opening up.
I'm pretty sure it's BYOB too. But maybe don't quote me on that. :)
As far as neighborhood taquerias go, this one is top notch. Â The market around this stretch of Lawrence is terribly over-saturated, but I do think San Juanito is the best. Â The chilaquiles (green) are fantastic, as are the steak fajitas and the classic tacos al pastor. Â
Staff is friendly and service generally fast, which is more than I can say for some of the taquerias nearby.
Yummy greasy cheap Mexican food. Â I got chips and salsa, a Chorizo Burrito and a Steak Quesadilla for me and my fiance for under $15. Â And it was hot and full of deliciousness. Â :)
This place is really kind of a dive and the tv always has one soccer or Mexican soaps, but the staff is really pleasant and the food is always quick. Â Its a nice place to stop after a long day at work when you don't want to cook but don't want to sell your first born on a restaurant in one of the pricier hoods.
This is a typical neighborhood taqueria - you go here because it's close to home and the food is good and easy on the wallet. Â I stopped in for lunch and ordered two chile relleno tacos, chips & guac, and a pop. Â I asked for the tacos to be topped with onions and cilantro only. Â The chile relleno tacos were good, but greasy. Â They definitely needed a squeeze of lime to cut the fat. Â
The highlight of the meal was the guacamole. Â It wasn't overmashed, and had lovely bits of creamy avocado throughout. Â And I liked the three salsas given - fresh tomato, smoky red chili, and creamy green. Â Top your chips with a drizzle of all three salsas with sour cream on the side... mmm, good stuff. Â
The menu is basic, but there are a couple items that I want to try next time (crispy potato tacos, chicharron sopes, al pastor tacos). Â They also serve breakfast and dinner. Â It's a little hole-in-the-wall type of place that's overshadowed by McD's across the street. Â Resist the big arches and go here instead.
Update 2/17: I also recommend their lomo tacos, which is thinly sliced beef sauteed with onions and peppers. Â The carne asada tacos are pretty good, as well. Â The potato tacos are a decent veggie option. Â It's just sauteed potatoes with sour cream, cheese, tomatoes, and lettuce in a crispy taco shell.
