It was really important that I like this place. We've lived in both San Jose, CA and central Texas so Mexican is a really important part of our culinary horizon. We've been there three times in three months and each time there's something wrong -- ok, two or three things wrong. This time it was a mixed up order, then food that wasn't hot, Â general slowness. Other times it was bad service -- just generally. The salsas are good as are the chips. The food is consistently flavorful for so is mine when I make it home. The thing is, I don't always want to be worried when I go out to eat. We might try them again for takeout, but I don't see spending time there.
Review Source:I had been here before about a year ago with decent luck, but maybe things are slipping. The food was a little below mediocre. Â I like the salsas, it's nice to have a green option on the table. I've had nothing here but tacos, so my scope is a little limited. The chorizo tacos were dry but inoffensive.
Regardless, my partner got sick here after eating the al pastor tacos, so on that alone, I'm pretty sure we will not be back.
I love this place! I went to Loyola and stuck around after I graduated and have been going for over 10 years. Â I think their Chicken Soup (Makes me feel better when I am sick) nachos, burrito suizo, chips and salsa are excellent. Their chips are homemade and never greasy. Â I can also tell they don't use the cheap steak in their tacos like El Norte does. Â I really can't decide if I like the red or green salsa better so I always order extra. Â I am enjoying the Red Chicken soup tonight because I have had a sore throat for a week and it has cured me in the past. I will give you an update on how I feel tomorrow. Â I will go here as long as I live in this neighborhood and I highly recommend that you try it out. Â It has been long over due and I feel bad for not writing earlier. Â Thanks for the decade of awesome food Susupuato! I will be back. Â I also posted a pic of my meal tonight.
Review Source:Sorry Susupuato, I will try you one more time but seriousl? That Pozole was L.A.M.E.- over salted, bland (yes, I put all the stuff in it- the broth was nada) greasy in a bad way. I didn't even take home the left overs. Never again.
My pal's fish tacos stank and were inedible to the point he went and asked for something else. Beef tacos. To which I added some of my left over onion/ cilantro/ limon- and were improved from tasteless to ok.
One More Time, Susu.
Ok! Â You guys have finally redeemed yourselves! Â My friend and me stopped buy for a quick lunch. Â Had the chicken enchiladas which was really good. Â Both the Rojas and Verde salsa were flavorful and spicy. Â Service was mediocre but the food more than made up for it. Â I would have given them an extra star, but they charged us $1.25 for a second order of chips! Â Really? Â Cheap bastards. Â In any case, I'll stop by for take out, but I don't see myself eating here.
Review Source:This is a moderate Mexican place nothing fancy. chips n salsa and the gorditas are the best homemade crispy n delicious. I've also tried the fajitas n enchiladas which were descent. They may take a while to bring ur order though since from the hiring cook sign outside they're short on staff. Outdated place, bathroom is not the best like in a lot of chicago joints.
Review Source:Mmm I love this place. Â The food is good and the service is good and quick. Â It's clean in there and BYOB. Â It's cheap and close to my apartment. Â Their chips and salsa are really good and one time when we were in there the person making the food was experimenting making different types of salsa and he let us try it :) Â I will definitely be back!
Review Source:I walked by this place and saw they sale tamales...Ive been looking for a good tamale place! Just to try, I ordered a pork and chicken tamale. I was suprised they did not have a beef tamale, but its ok. When I got home, it was snack time! The pork tamle was great. There was a good amount of meat and good favor. The chicken was just ok. There was more bread than meat, which was a bit dry. Wish I had ordered two pork tamles! Good and quick service. Despite the surroundings, the store was clean. Low prices as well. Overall, this is my new tamale joint for the time being.
Review Source:Chips + Salsa + Tacos de Lengua + Burrito Suizo = #EatLikeAnA$$hole
Seriously... I should have worn my fat pants. And by fat pants I mean the meggings that are four sizes too big for me.
The chips & salsa they bring to your table are good, just take it easy on the salsa because the pain receptors in your mouth will be feeling the heat at room temperature and the introduction of hot food into the mix will make it feel like you're eating hot lava. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. A lot of people like it hot, Mr Beautiful included. I just wanted to warn some of the Yelper's who can't take the heat and Yelp in pain when things get a little too spicy.
I like the tacos the lengua here. Like any taqueria, they're simple: tortilla, lengua, cilantro, onion. Squeeze a little lime juice on them, add a bit of salsa, and you're good to go. The best part is that they're extremely generous with the lengua. What can I say? I like it with A LOT of tongue!
The burrito suizo was pretty tasty. I could have gone with the healthier chicken burrito, but, since I was already eating like an a$$hole, I figured that I'd get the carne asada burrito covered in cheese, sour cream, and salsa. I can't remember everything that was in the burrito, but the one thing that stood out was the fact that it had lettuce. Yeah, they've mastered the art of putting lettuce in a burrito full of hot deliciousness without having it turn all soggy. I've had burrito suizos at many restaurants and taquerias of various levels of Mexcellenceâ„¢ and I have to say that the one I had here is up there with some of the better ones I've had.
I'm in the area quite often and will most definitely be returning to try the other delicious items on their menu. I suggest you come here too. If you're lucky, you just might run into me. Don't be afraid to come over and say hi while I'm eating like an a$$hole. I never deny anyone the opportunity to bask in the awesomeness of my beauty.
Holla!!!â„¢
The wife was working in Evanston one afternoon and I was ordered to supply her with lunch. Â This order was given while I was in the car. Â She demanded Mexican food. Â I happened to be driving by Taq Susupuato. Â So I pulled over. Â To my surprise, it was pretty crowded for a Thursday afternoon. Â One big table and a few couples were having lunch, not to mention a good string of take out orders being prepped. Â I ordered up my wife's usual, carne asada tacos with rice and beans. Â I picked out a nice carnitas burrito for myself and headed up to Evanston for an impromtu picnic lunch. Â
We were surprised by how good the food is. Â Susupuato can be easily lost in the miriade of Uptown and Edgewater taquerias. Â There seems to be about a thousand of them, which is great. Â But this plain little store-front cranks out some good food.
The steak tacos as well as the lingua are good. Â However paying extra for cheese is a bit ridiculous on a taco. Â
I ordered my food for dine in, the waitress bagged it and when I stated I wanted to eat in she she brings me a plate with a huff and puff. Â
Fountain drink refills are not free.
1 steak, 1 lingua, chips and salsa and a small soda $11. Â The food is there but not for the price.
Try the pork enchiladas. Â MMMMM good. Â Worth going back, again and again.
A very modest Mexican restaurant with some of the better Mexican food in Chicago. Â Definitely an "understated' interior. Â Nothing fancy here. Â But the food is fine. Â Tamales are very good. Â The salsa verde terrific. Â Service is uninspired, functional, OK. Â Not a destination place, but one of those "I don't want fancy. Â Let's just grab a quick, good, no hassle meal." Â Very reasonably priced.
Once you go, you'll go back, so try it.
Garbage. Â This place is terrible. Â I'm actually feeling a little sick from eating it. Â I had the pastor burrito dinner. Â the rice and beans portion were about two bites a piece. Â the slowest wait, expensive, and just plain awful. Â the best part of the meal was the sauce that came with it and them putting carrots and pineapple in the rice. Â i can't believe this place is still in business.
Review Source:Chorizo taco... excellent. Simple, and so, so good.
Steak taco... well seasoned, hot, a nice blend of flavors.
Guacamole does not disappoint.
Dine-in chips are hot, crispy-but-not-too-crispy.
Service is always friendly but not oppressive. Â You can feel free to linger here for as long as you like; they are not in a rush to get you out of here. Â Yes, the dining room is sparse. Â Yes, you're either sitting in basically a display window or a large room where your eyes are hopelessly drawn to local TV.
Still one of my favorite spots for taco-beans-rice-and-basic-stuff-Mexican in the city.
Alert: absurdity ahead!
Ok, first of all, Susupuato was my go-to taco place for years. Â It's super cheap, esp. if you just order a couple tacos a la carte and then fill up on chips. Â The ground beef and chorizo tacos are pretty decent, as is the salsa verde. Â Food quality wasn't completely consistent at all times, but most of the time it was fine.
Then came the problems. Â We hadn't eaten there in awhile, and decided to order delivery, which we had done many times in the past with no problems.
Well, our food arrived about forty minutes later than the estimate they had quoted us. Â We called the restaurant a few times while we were waiting, and they kept telling us the delivery person was in the neighborhood and was looking for parking and should be there any minute.
Delivery person arrived with no apology or explanation, and when we got the food up to our place it was cold.
So, we were pretty bummed and gave up on Susu for awhile. Â But we figured it was probably a fluke and one day we needed some tacos, and we needed them delivered. Â So, we gave Susupuato another chance.
And, what do you know, same thing happened again. Â Delivery guy shows up way late saying that he's been driving around the neighborhood for thirty minutes b/c there's no parking. Â So we ask him why he didn't double park or park on the corner. Â And he says he can't do that and tells us not to order delivery from them again because there's no place to park in our neighborhood. Â So I say, then don't tell us you can deliver to our neighborhood when we call!
So basically, this goes on for a bit, and we tell him we don't want to pay for cold food. Â In the end he just yells at us to never call them ever again, and he leaves with our cold food.
Ridiculous, right?
So we did call one more time, to talk to a manager. Â (After we got food elsewhere b/c our tummies weren't very happy after waiting over an hour for nothing) Â And they said there wasn't a manager there but they would have the manager call us back. Â And no one ever did. Â So. Â We haven't been back.
Has anyone else experienced this? Â Because I don't see how we can be the only people in the neighborhood to have this problem, when the delivery driver is volatile and doesn't know how to deliver food in the city.
I've been in the neighborhood for about a month now and I have walked past the unassuming entrance of Susupuato dozens of times, never feeling a desire to enter. Â Tonight I had a mean craving for Mexican food so I hit yelp and found this place to be the perfect compromise of proximity and star ratings.
Stepping inside I was shocked to see how spacious the place is, there is plenty of seating but tables aren't jammed up against one another. Â The decor is clean and unpretentious, the dining area was basically vacant with a tv playing quietly in a corner. Â I can't really see taking a date here but it wouldn't be a bad place for a big family dinner outing.
My previous residence was a short walk from a La Pasadita and I am feeling a little separation anxiety, I still have dreams of their steak torta goodness. Â So of course I set myself up for disappointment by ordering one from Susupauto. Â The sandwich has pretty decent flavor (and the salsa verde adds a tasty kick), but the steak is a more fatty/chewy than I like and the bread to filling ratio is a bit on the skimpy side. Â I probably won't order a torta again but they do have an extensive menu that I look forward to exploring.
Along with the torta I got some chips and guacamole and an horchata. Â The guacamole is pretty standard, with lots of diced tomato which is a plus. Â It is pretty mild but the foil ball full of chopped jalapeno that accompanies the guac takes care of that. Â The highlight of the meal hands down is the horchata, it is pure sweet cinnamony deliciousness.
I look forward to sampling some more of the menu and I will check back in with another review and hopefully another star or two, I really want to like this place.
There is nothing overwhelmingly awesome about Susupuato, but it is a fair priced spot with good food and service.
Amongst this style of restaurants I think it is a bit more difficult to stand out in a crowd. Susupauto differentiates itself from the mexican joint on every other corner by it's decor and service. Don't get me wrong the food is good, but not outstanding. The place is nice and clean, and has a nice little exican feel to it. The walls are decorated with oil painting of mother and child cooking handmade tortillas on a clay stove, and other colorful Mexican art.
I usually get a steak torta and some tacos. I like my tacos just with lime, onions and cilantro. The biggest component in Mexican food is the meat. Their steak could use some more seasoning, and they could serve a higher quality steak. More often than not I get those pieces of tough fat. nasssstay.
If you're in the area, stop by, really no need to go out of your way though. I'm sure there is a place equally as good within earshot.
Before I begin, can I say that it should be mandatory to have a liquor license if you're going to open a Mexican food joint? Why? Because any time I have Mexican food I need margaritas. NEED. Â It's like the jelly to my peanut butter.
Second, although I'm giving 2 stars, I have NOT written the place off.
Moving on.
I had the enchiladas rojas and they were ok. Not bad, not great, just ok. My dinner date got chicken flautes and they were not good at all. The chicken was so bland that he had to dump extra hot sauce and even some rojas sauce on the side. Â He also got a banana milkshake and it was delicious! No artificial banana flavor, just real bananas. Also, I like that they make their rice from scratch. It's a bummer when you can tell restaurants use boxed rice with crappy dehydrated vegetables.
The service was fast and the staff was really friendly but the food was just ok. Based on other reviews I should get something with steak in it. You just can't go wrong with steak, huh?
This review is only based on their tamales and horchata.
We saw TAMALES in the restaurant window and had to order some to go. Â We told the lady that we didnt want to sit down and eat, but that we wanted to take some tamales to go. She offered us the option to take them home warm or take them home cold. Â We opted for cold since that kept more of the moisture in after reheating. Â My only complaint is that they only had pork and chicken tamale, but no veggie tamale. Â We ordered the pork tamale. Each one was $1.50, or 15 for $12.
I came home and reheated one of the tamales and it was yummie!! The tamales were big in size and had a good amount of pork stuffing in it. Â The meat was pretty tender. Â
The horchata was very sweet, which I love! Delicious!
I love this place. Â I always get the 3 taco dinner with all Tacos Al Pastor. Â Great tasting Al Pastor! Â I went there with a large group once, and my sister ordered a chimichanga, and really liked it. Â My Bro in law had a combination platter, with a taco, tostada and cheese enchilada - he said the taco and tostada were excellent, but he didn't really care for the sauce on the enchilada. Â My husband had the burrito, which he said was good, but that he wished he would have gotten the tacos instead (that's our standard order). Â Overall great taste for the price!
Review Source:If by authentic you mean aftertastes of acidic garbage juice, then yes!
OK. That may be a little harsh, but my experience with Susupuato was bad enough that I won't be going back. I ordered the gorditas dinner with chicken and chorizo. The chicken (both dark and white meat, fyi) tasted funky--very bitter and chewy--a bit what I imagine chicken from the bottom of a garbage can to taste like. The chorizo was definitely better, but the veggies in both gorditas were sad, wilty things. The boyfriend ordered a steak fajita burrito, and it was definitely the best thing we had. The peppers and onions were tasty, and the steak had decent-to-good flavor, even if it was a bit gristly. The horchata was a bit watered-down, definitely not the best I've had but not terrible.
I probably won't be back and will opt for joints like La Amistad instead, but if I do find myself in Susupuato again, I'll go for the fajita burrito instead.
I really enjoy eating here if I go out. It's a lowkey, yet pleasant, mom-and pop owned place, and they really go out of their way to make good food.
Tacos are great! 2 separate salsas for you to sample as well with the chips.
Downside: Â They may want to work on their meat cuts (i've gotten gristle twice... that can easily be taken care of though with a little more care).
The bathrooms- I once had to use a stall (I'm a male) because the urinal wasn't available... they had a sign to put toilet paper IN THE GARBAGE. Â That is nasty, period. Â That alone docks a star in my book.
So, I say... definetely go there and eat... but they should try to be careful with their meat cuts and get that toilet fixed!
Nothing that special. Nice window seats to watch the Loyola crowd. Older decor.

I have had the take-out twice now and feel comfy telling you...that I dream about this restaurant. Being a Texas native, I long for some good, authentic Mexican food. This place hits the spot! Some Details:
1. The first time I visited I got the chicken tacos with rice and beans. AMAZING! The shreaded chicken was VERY tasty and there was a ton of it on my tacos. I also got a glass of orchata- and it was some of the best I have had in the city.
2. The dining room looks nice and big, but I have never eaten inside before. It was also clean and quiet!
3. There is a ton of meter parking all around, so I don't have a problem getting a spot, even during the lunch rush.
4. The second time I went I got chicken tamales with rice and beans. I had to knock off a star for the tamales, because there was so little meat in the tamale, that I thought at first I had ordered wrong. There was literally 2 pieces of tiny chicken in one of the tamales, but the other one was better. The more full of the two was very good. I dipped my tamales in the green sauce....which is now my favorite sauce in the city! The chips and salsa were wonderful as well. Salty and homemade!
I like neighborhood places and I like small, unfancy taquerias. Â Susupuato fits both of these descriptors and provides more than I ever expected. Â
I have eaten in a couple of times, nothing to write home about, but nothing to have to get dressed up over either! Â The staff is incredibly friendly and the food speaks for itself.
The standard meals ordered here comes without fanfare, without polish, but more than satisfies expectations. Â I have never been disappointed with the food. Â The beans are awesome! Â This should be a hint that the rest of the food is also gonna make you happy! Â I usually stick with the steak burrito... I know, boring, but, it is HUGE!! Â I eat half of it for one meal, and half for another! Â
Last time I had food from here we had ordered for delivery. Â Delivery was and is always quick- and I appreciate that too!! Â The boys consumed their food with glee! Â They had enchiladas, a chimichanga, and something else, as well as rice, beans, and the Verde sauce. Â I left my 1/2 burrito in the fridge, meaning to have it for lunch later in the week. Â Sadly, it had already been consumed by one of my friends! Â He took it to work for lunch and loved it. Â He actually commented on how it was 2 days old and not soggy. Â GREAT! Â Glad HE got to enjoy it!!
There really isn't too much to say about Susupuato. Â The food is standard Mexican fare that's good but definitely not amazing. Â It's a bit pricier than I'd like but it's the only authentic Mexican food that's within walking distance from me so I'm kind of held hostage to it. Â
Side note, every single time I've been in this place I've always gotten take out. Â Maybe I'm missing something but I doubt it. Â If I want to watch CLTV I can do that at home.
Susupuato looks sketchy as shit from the outside. It's the type of place that I would walk by and wonder wtf anyone eats there. Definitely not noticeable, easy to overlook, whatever you want to call it. I happened to live across the street for a year and thus know that it, in fact, seriously kicks ass at Mexican food.
My life didn't even know fajita burritos before Susupuato. And they set the bar high so I now compare every fajita burrito to theirs. It is GOOD. That is all I ever ordered there - the fajita burrito - but I can also tell you they have some wicked good salsa verde and my friends claim greatness on the enchiladas. So do with that information what you will.
I actually can't remember what I got here last week, but whatever it was, it was delicious. The rice and beans were delicious and satisfied my craving for them, and while the decor isn't anything special (it looks like a ballet rehearsal room because of the wall of mirrors...which I thought was cool, anyway) the people that work here are genuinely nice and I had a enjoyable meal.
It was a chimichanga. How could I forget? It was so good. Flaky and delicious! My friend had a burrito, and while I despise all burritos, he said it was "absolutely awesome," so that's good news if you're not anti-burrito like me. ^.^
The prices weren't bad at all. I had good food, good service, and I felt comfortable. Definitely try it out.
I really enjoyed the El Pastor taco dinner served with beans and rice. Â The onion and cilantro in the taco really added to the flavor. Â The chips and salsa were also quite flavorful. Â
The prices seemed a bit steep ($2.25 for a can of coke?!) and the atmosphere is definitely lacking. Â However, I would go here again for quick, flavorful tacos.
This used to be a regular lunch place for me and would still be if it was just a tad more convenient. I LOVE this place for oh so many reasons:
1) It looks dive-y from the outside but couldn't be less so. Â The dining room is actually enormous and it's kinda fun to sit in the "window seats"--note: only do this when the weather is cool, otherwise you start to feel like an ant under a magnifying glass...but that's a detail.
2) The food is great. Â That "funny" aftertaste spoken of earlier is what I like to call "authentic." Â This is not your mom's Chi-Chi's. Â No. Â The beans and rice are as real as could be. Â I usually opt for chicken or beef tacos on the corn tortilla--mmmm. Â And the portions couldn't be more generous. Â Add avocado and wow...life's lookin' up. Â Their salsas are homemade but the salsa verde...so good I could drink it by itself. Â Beware--the salsas are pretty spicy, so don't go gettin' all ambitious right away. Â The fresh tortilla chips should help you out a little there.
3) The price seems almost unreal. Â Most often I've walked out of there feeling ready to fall into a tomatillo-induced coma only to realize I paid so little for my lunch that I could probably find room for a little dessert. Â With prices like these, you'd almost tolerate okay food. Â The best part of this place: YOU DON"T HAVE TO!!!
Go. Go. Go. Â They're just as good for takeout and a helluva lot better than Jimmy John's next door for a quick, cheap lunch.
Mmmm. Yep, this place is yummy. I've had many a meal here...breakfast, lunch and dinner and have never left disappointed. Chilaquiles, huaraches, tortas, gorditas...yeah it's all good. This place almost reminds me of some of the restaurants in my old neighborhood...Pilsen and the chilaquiles remind me of the ones my mom used to make for me. Sigh.
The place isn't really much of anything when it comes to looks but it's clean and service is decent and you'll definitely get a good meal here.
Went in here for a quick dinner with boyfriend. Â
1. Â I got the combination platter which included a cheese enchilada, taco, tostada (carne asada for both). Â The taco and tostado was decent, good, but honestly I've never really had a bad steak taco/tostada. Â For the enchilda, it was inedible. Â Completely disgusting. Â The sauce was smoky and had a bitter aftertaste!!! Â Also, the rice and beans had a distanct taste as well. Â Not good at all! Â Would NOT go again!!!!
2. Â Boyfriend got the tostada dinner (with carne asada). Â As good as mine, but once again, he thought the rice and beans tasted funny.
Go a mile down to Riques!
Basic Mexican at its most basic.
I've been there for a couple veggie burritos... and by "veggie" I of course mean lettuce. Lettuce, rice, and a couple bites with what tasted like some beans and sour cream. I mean it wasn't bad, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there. Not sure how the rest of the menu is, but if I were to extend it from the burrito, I'd be inclined to think pretty lackluster. Chips were satisfactory, but they taste like really any other bagged chip. I just got carryout, but the interior is clean (although pretty boring).
I guess if you're hankering for some bland Mexican and can't make it to Taco Bell...
