I was assured, by a member of my party of 4, that this is the busiest he'd ever seen Thai Siam. Â I looked around the open floor and noted all of the empty tables and chairs on this brisk Saturday night and kind of wondered how they'd stayed in business so long.
The awards hung by the door assured me that the restaurant had received "Best of *" awards consistently between 2001 and 2007. Â That's a good start, but we're 6 years out and the empty, open, sparsely-decorated room wasn't confidence inspiring.
We were quickly seated. The server was very quick and friendly, taking our drink and appetizer orders and returning in quick succession. Â The pork and shrimp wontons that I had were underwhelming and seemed to lack a flavorful kick that it needed. Â I still ate 4 of them, though. Â
The Thai iced tea was good. Â
Having waited just the right amount of time between the appetizer and the onset of secondary hunger, the entrees arrived. Â My spicy pork dish was flavorful, but required supplementary hot sauce brought by our server. Â The portion size was just right, leaving me feeling neither wanting nor disgusting. Â
The prices were great and my glass was never dry. Â Personally, I think that if they added some dividers to make the seating feel cozier as well as heaped on the decoration to give it a more exotic feel, it might lend itself to a more exotic and satisfying feeling. Â Overall, a pretty nice place.
I've been underwhelmed the few times we've eaten here. Â Sexy Beast likes it okay but I find it lacking in Thai-ness.
In my experience, Thai food is flavorful and complex, layered with spices and textures. Â It's supposed to engage your taste buds, make them pay attention to all of the nuances of the dish. Â It should be like a slightly unstable, very pretty, well educated, mysterious date. Â You should be titillated, enamored, and just a little bit afraid.
This place serves up your Aunt Betty's accountant's homely daughter who collects doilies and has only read two books in her life. Â It's pretty boring but, you know, you wouldn't kick her out of bed.
I've tried the entrees and found that they lack punch. Â The appetizers were decent. Â Service was slow despite the fact that we always go when they are virtually empty.
