I was assured, by a member of my party of 4, that this is the busiest he'd ever seen Thai Siam. Â I looked around the open floor and noted all of the empty tables and chairs on this brisk Saturday night and kind of wondered how they'd stayed in business so long.
The awards hung by the door assured me that the restaurant had received "Best of *" awards consistently between 2001 and 2007. Â That's a good start, but we're 6 years out and the empty, open, sparsely-decorated room wasn't confidence inspiring.
We were quickly seated. The server was very quick and friendly, taking our drink and appetizer orders and returning in quick succession. Â The pork and shrimp wontons that I had were underwhelming and seemed to lack a flavorful kick that it needed. Â I still ate 4 of them, though. Â
The Thai iced tea was good. Â
Having waited just the right amount of time between the appetizer and the onset of secondary hunger, the entrees arrived. Â My spicy pork dish was flavorful, but required supplementary hot sauce brought by our server. Â The portion size was just right, leaving me feeling neither wanting nor disgusting. Â
The prices were great and my glass was never dry. Â Personally, I think that if they added some dividers to make the seating feel cozier as well as heaped on the decoration to give it a more exotic feel, it might lend itself to a more exotic and satisfying feeling. Â Overall, a pretty nice place.
I've been underwhelmed the few times we've eaten here. Â Sexy Beast likes it okay but I find it lacking in Thai-ness.
In my experience, Thai food is flavorful and complex, layered with spices and textures. Â It's supposed to engage your taste buds, make them pay attention to all of the nuances of the dish. Â It should be like a slightly unstable, very pretty, well educated, mysterious date. Â You should be titillated, enamored, and just a little bit afraid.
This place serves up your Aunt Betty's accountant's homely daughter who collects doilies and has only read two books in her life. Â It's pretty boring but, you know, you wouldn't kick her out of bed.
I've tried the entrees and found that they lack punch. Â The appetizers were decent. Â Service was slow despite the fact that we always go when they are virtually empty.
Visiting my mom, went here on New Year's Eve, only one other table with customers the entire time we were there, and I know why :  the food was terrible.  The service was good, but what a waste of time and money. They couldn't even get the soups right, some of the worst  I have ever had. My curry dish was like water. Ranks up there with some of the worst Thai food I have ever had.  Sorry Thai Siam.
Review Source:We love Thai food and get carryout from here at least every few weeks. Â My favorite is Hor Mok Talay, SP 8 on the menu...It is far better than versions we've had other places and in my opinion one of the tastiest dishes in the city. Â It is seafood, bok choy, etc in a delicious sauce... We also like the pad thai, dumplings, beef salad, and shrimp soup (S1 on the menu). Â Long ago we were fortunate enough to get to Thailand and this place brings back good memories..
Review Source:We wanted to believe the good reviews of this place because we live so close. But it is really bad, both in color as you can see from the photos on yelp, and in flavor. We tried the pineapple curry and red curry both with chicken. Both had the smell and taste of month-old reheated curry. Avoid this place. We also could not finish more than a few bites, and left the rest of the meal. If you're wondering if its worth the extra drive to Thai smile, it is. Always.
Review Source:I ordered carryout for lunch from Thai Siam one weekend when driving along Bardstown Road. The Basil Chicken and Red Curry (Chicken) were both excellent! The Basil Chicken in particular was addictive - my stomach was full but I just couldn't stop. So much for saving it for another meal or two...But that shouldn't give you the impression the serving sizes are meager - quite the contrary, and the prices are very reasonable compared to places like Simply Thai. I'll definitely go out of the way to pick up some Thai food from this place whenever I get a craving for it.
Review Source:First off, nice dining room, but nothing fancy. Â I like that. Â Hostess was really nice. Â Bathrooms are a little scary--but honestly I've seen many worse.
Had the curry of the day (yellow, I think) at lunchtime. Â Service could have been better. Â Curry was good. Â Soup of the day was rice and broccoli and it didn't impress me at all--boxed broth with chopped up rice and tiny bites of broccoli? Â
I'll bring my family at dinner time and we'll get our usual favorites and see what we think. Â Solid on first impression.
Carry Out Experience.
I live nearby and wanted to grab something on my way home. Since we could only access the menu online we grabbed some classic dishes.
Anything carry out is truly hard to judge, but I was just over all not impressed. The pricing is reasonably cheap and the location is convenient so I may be back. However, if I have the time and I am craving Thai, I'll make the drive to Simply Thai (see that review).
Perhaps it was due to carry out or being an hour before closed but everything had little flavor. Thank goodness for soy sauce!
Went here on a week night with a visiting co-worker. This place is decent at lunch, but for dinner, I was not impressed. The restaurant was empty, and the service was ok. We ordered two appetizers - vegetarian spring rolls (ok) and fried tofu with sweet/peanut sauce (tofu was not good, from frozen). The chicken curry and curry fried rice were okay. I don't think the vegetables in the chicken curry were fresh, and the potatoes were cut too big.
Review Source:Not that impressed but it was ok. Â Would I go back? Â Not really. Â The String Beans were great, but the Thai Fried Rice wasn't that good. Â Don't waste your money on the Thai Iced Tea, we didn't enjoy it at all, and I doubt it's real Thai tea. Â I think they had the B Team in the kitchen.
Review Source:Thai Siam is a popular place for work lunching. Â It has a solid lunch menu at reasonable prices. Â Lunch comes with a spring roll and soup or salad. Â Most lunches are $6.95, with some $7.95, so it's reasonable.
As a fan of the spice, I like that they have little sauce trays they bring out so you can add the heat. Â I will say that ordering a "spicy" dish (Basil Chicken) and three heaping spoons of chili sauce, it's still not spicy enough for my tastes. Â If you're looking for authentic Thai hot spice, you will not find it at Thai Siam.
A rather sparse dining room, a $2.50 Thai iced tea (my meal is only $6.95!!) along with occasionally spotty service renders a 3-star rating from me. Â But, I'll be back!
The name is misleading. I thought the Siam part of the name suggested regional Southeast Asian cuisine, but the menu was largely Thai.
As Thai food goes the food was pretty good, nothing spectacular, but worth the trip if you are in the neighborhood. The staff was nice and accommodating. I was slightly disappointed with my Tom Yum soup, it just seemed to be missing something. However the spicy green beans ordered by my fellow diners were excellent.
My husband and I used to live in the neighborhood across the street from Thai Siam, and it used to be the place we went any time we wanted to eat out. Â We have moved to a new neighborhood and while I think Thai Siam is wonderful I don't think I would make a special trip out of my way to pick some take out up. Â If I was on Bardstown Rd. and had a hankering for some spring rolls I would still head over there though! Â Give is a try, it really is fantastic!
