Went at an "off time", 2:00 PM on a Monday. Was told 10 to 15 min wait for a table. It ended up being an hour or more. Not happy about that. Hostess dumped sets of napkins and menus in a clump on the table, while she is eye candy, she acted like she did us a favor to do so.  No server came for 15 min, no water, nothing. Was ignored. I expect better service.

While the portions are great, quality is iffy. My son's burger was still steaming, mine was room temp. So the bottom part of the bun was very soggy. No way I could pick it up to eat it. The combo basket of fries and onion rings was wonderful, hot, crisp, and tasty.

The service was terrible. I was never offered a refill on my soda, no one offered refills of water. Do all they want are drunks spending money on lots of beer?

I over tipped as I remember when I worked for tips back when. I did consider leaving a "Insultingly" small tip to make a point, but decided that it may not be the server's issue. It may be management's issue.  Being nice when we interact  does not make up for ignoring me for long periods of time.

    Will not repeat.

Amazing little burger place with a great staff. We had to wait Two hours to get in but it was well worth the wait.

Just like other reviewers have said....  The place is cramped and very busy, so be prepared to wait....a long time sometimes.  Just sign in and they will get to you when they get to you.  They move 'em as quickly as possible.  Play the jukebox or just sit and people watch if need be.

You've probably heard about the legendary Thurman Burger?  It's huge and messy.  Not for me.  No thanks.  It's a monster of a burger.

Pizza Thins!  That's why I love this place.  Ultra thin slightly crispy crust that's just enough to hold the toppings.  Subs are awesome and a great value.  Jalapeno bites are good to nosh on until the main stuff comes out.

Service is always good to great.  One person takes your order, someone else gets your drinks, someone else delivers your food but there's never a problem with order accuracy.

This place also has more stuff on their walls than a 14 year old girl.  Stuff everywhere!  Makes for conversation when things are dragging a bit.

Amazing burger if you can bear the slow service. It took our group of five 90 minutes to be seated and then another 45 just to place an order. Granted, that was on a weekend but still a bit long. Great burger, if you can wait

A word of advice: Don't take a party of 8 to Thurman's.  You will have to wait at least 2 hours.  Then, when you get inside, they put you at a booth that seats 7 uncomfortably especially if you're at the corner like I was.  They pulled up a chair for the 8th guy.  Their chair: 2 cases of Bud Light.  Now with all of that said, this is hands down my favorite burger place of all time.

They have a large menu but I have no idea why you would get anything other than a burger here.  The burgers are a juicy, giant mess, but they are fantastic.  All of my toppings were falling out with every bite.  By the time I got to my last 2 or 3 bites, I didn't even have a bun anymore.  I really don't care about the chips or the fries that come with it.  I came here for the burger and waited 2 hours outside and then another 30 min. in a cramped booth but it was completely worth it.

On top of that, I loved the service and the atmosphere.  I loved the fact that the extra chair was 2 cases of bud light.  Yeah the 2 hour wait was really boring and at the time, I couldn't remember if it was worth the wait since I had only been there one other time, but it was completely worth it and I will go again but probably with a smaller group next time.

Have heard about this place a lot since I got here, so we finally decided to try the famous place. We got there at about 7pm on Friday, there were lots of people waiting and it took about an hour till the waiter get us seated.
We two girls tried the Thurman burger, and the only guy ordered the Thurmanator. HUGE burgers came and we looked at each other, totally at loss and don't know how to eat it... Well it turned out we can only eat this in the messy way. The portion was incredibly huge but surprisingly good, well at least exceeded my expectation... None of us finished the burger, maybe I'll starve myself for three days and try again later LOL

Originally from Columbus, this place always brings back fond memories.  I make it a point to visit when I make my annual trek to visit the family in C-bus.  Still the best burgers around.  I've lived in the Milwaukee area for 8 years now and still haven't found a burger here that can hold a candle to The Thurman.  My blue cheese bacon burger awaits!

Umm... yum?  This is the place for an ultimate splurge.  I would definitely not come here on a daily basis (See: review for Riverside Hospital).

The staff are friendly and used to the "Man vs. Food" gawkers that frequent this place.  We only had to wait a few minutes, and were seated in a booth, ready for the meat-fest that is the Thurman burger.  I got the A-1 burger, and it was perfect.  Without eating the bun, I was able to finish the whole thing.  I took one bite as a "sandwich", and the whole thing fell apart.  Toppings overload! This was okay, though as it tasted just fine with a knife and fork.  The A-1 burger came with fried onions on top, which made it delicious!

We also tried the fried pickles, and as a connoisseur of all things pickled and fried, I'd have to  suggest the spears vs. the chips.  Both were good, but the spears tasted homemade, and the chips seemed to be prepared/maybe frozen.  I'd have to ask to be sure.

The beers were cold, the beef was delish, and I'll be back to post one of the those dollar bills on the bar for sure!

First date with the love of my life. Such a fun location. Enjoy beers while you wait, Plus wings are great. Spicy garlic does me right. Tried Thurmanator and ended up with lunch for the week. Even good for a hangover spot. Never disappointed.

    Killer burgers... literally

Please note:  if you do not care anything about calories and health risks you can probably notch another star in your mind to this review.

Thurman's is a world-renowned burger place sitting discreetly in the German Village.  The first time I tried to go the wait was just too long so I did not stay.  I believe this is common.  I did endure the 2nd time out and first impression was this place is a DIVE.  Reminded me of the college town restaurants only a few levels worse.  The service was nothing special, but I wasn't bothered by it either.  The burger was bigger than my mouth.  Tasty, but greasy.  Man that was a big burger, I took a picture trying to take a bite of it (can you say lockjaw).  Afterward eating as much as I could muster I was satisfied and very sluggish.  If a big sloppy burger is your thing this is your kind of place.

my friend told me about this place and since we were visiting Columbus.. we just had to go and try it out! its a pretty small bar and was really crowded! the wait was 2 hrs at 6:00 pm Sunday for us..

we ordered a Hawaiian thin crust pizza and i ordered the thurmanator burger which has mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickle, banana peppers, two 12 ounce patties, bacon, cheddar, sauteed mushrooms, onions, ham, mozzarella, American cheese, and served with fries..

the Hawaiian pizza was eh.. didn't really like it.. taste like cheap frozen pizza.. maybe because i am spoiled from Chicago pizza.

the thurmanator! wow! what a great delicious juicy burger! it was well seasoned and ingredients was fresh.. easily one of my favorite burgers that I've ever tried so far.. it was just that dam good! the fries was awesome too! its seasoned fries! and it was just fried perfectly!

omg just writing this review makes me crave for another thurmanator burger!!  I'm sure my thighs and stomach hates me after eating that whole thing! lol

A must try! Loved the burgers and the atmosphere. They definitely hook it up! I recommend getting there a little before they open. It's a small place, so it definitely gets packed fast. Can't wait to go again!

This place was over-hyped to me, and yet I still found it to exceed my expectations!  The burger just tastes amazing, something about the beef or the way it's prepared - not sure, but it was amazing.

If you're a fan of burgers, highly recommended.

After my boyfriend visited with some co-workers, he was convinced I needed to try it out. (Being in ManVFood helped too. lol )

I think the hype is more over the fact that these burgers are MONSTROUSLY HUGE. I'm not going to lie, they did taste good. But if you were expecting gourmet-a-la-five-star then go find another place. This place is a genuine dive.

I tried to man-handle the burger and ended up making out with my plate. I didn't even get to finish the burger. I'd say I made it about 5/8 of the way. I'm glad I didn't get fries... My tactic did not work, but my bf ended up finishing his. He took the "never put it back down" approach!

Its more about the fun of eating the ginormous burgers and sharing a beer than anything else.

Atmosphere? Well, its a bar and cafe. The decor is kitsch-bar and its pretty cramped

Be prepared for a good-ole guilty pleasure food endevour here.

I think I over-hyped this place in my mind with all the hoopla surrounding it.  I really wanted to like it, but I don't see how the end (big, messy burger), justified the means (hour and a half wait for table, then another 45 mins for food).

The burger was fine.  A little overcooked with an extreme lack of structural integrity.  One bite and it kind of all just falls apart with all the toppings.  Not the best burger I've ever had, but certainly not anywhere near the worst.  The fries, on the other hand, were top notch.

Plan on a wait.  The lines start early here.

I had been told of this place from a friend who lives in Columbus and figured to try it out. Be prepared to wait a LONG time for anything. Getting in at the main restaurant had a 1.5 hour wait we decided to go to their "takeout" location next door. Despite there being a few people in there from the time from order till when we received our order was a good half hour. The quality of food was a bit of a disappointment. The fried goods were burnt and tasted horrible. Looked like they came out of a frier with 2 week old oil. The burger was at least quite good so for points for that. Fix the two issues above and i may return, but not now.

So everyone must make a visit to this beloved Columbus landmark at least once... a year. I say once a year, because once you attempt to eat a thurmanator burger, you don't have to eat for another year. Logistically impossible to bite from bun to bun. Maybe if I could dislocate my jaw like an anaconda, then yes possibly.

So is this the best burger I ever had? Nope.
But I like the novelty of the mammoth sized burgers.

After 3 years in Columbus, I figured it was about time I made my way to Thurman's. With a group of 8 girlfriends, we decided on a late dinner--9 p.m. on a Thursday. We got lucky and didn't have to wait at all for a table!

I ordered the Bleu Cheese Burger, which came "fully dressed" with lettuce, tomato, raw onion and pickles, as well as bleu cheese dressing and a slice of mozzarella cheese. Besides the messy factor, it was SO good! Although Thurman's offered an extensive menu of sandwiches, appetizers, wings, etc. everyone in my group wanted the true Thurman's experience and thus ordered a burger.

My girlfriends and I had so much fun watching each other try to eat our monster sized burgers. The atmosphere was so relaxed and inviting, and our server was great.

My only complaint would be parking--you're pretty much on your own to find a spot on the street. Other than that, Columbus is lucky to have Thurman's Cafe!

My god, this place could give you a heart attack with the size of their burgers. But, it would be a great heart attack, because it is delicious!

Such a huge selection, great sides, nice drink menu and pretty awesome staff. Every time I've gone here (3 times now), I have the to take about 3/4 of the burger home, because it's so large. I feel as if I'd have to exercise for 3 months just to work off the meat. But, it's worth it. If you've lived in Columbus and you haven't tried this place, do it. It is a MUST.

One thing that annoys me about this place is the size. It's small, and considering their popularity, you'll be waiting for a table for 30 minutes to an hour and a half. I've been lucky. I've only had to wait about 15 minutes for a small table. Go during a time when it's not busy, or OSU isn't playing a game (whenever that is).

It's a Columbus institution and seems to be getting more and more popular.  The burgers are actually delicious, although unbelievably messy, but maybe not delicious enough for the inevitable wait it takes to get into the tiny dining area.  Once in a blue moon you'll be lucky enough to get a table quickly during odd times or steal a couple of spots at the bar.  That's when Thurman's is at their best, but when the wait is an hour or longer, as it frequently is, then it's probably not worth it.

I'm always shocked at how few people actually go with the Thurman burger.  You should; it's the best offering.  I'm told the wings are good too, but have never actually been with anyone who has ordered them.

Service can be spotty.  I still fume about a time we were one of three tables in the the place and basically ignored, eventually choosing to walk out.

Home of some serious monster burgers like the fabled "Thurmanator" as seen on Triple D.
You know that you are in for a battle when every burger on the menu 3/4lb or bigger.. This was our first stop for real food on our road trip across America so me and the lady were inclined to order one of these artery clogging monsters each for ourselves.
I got the Big TC and she got the Bacon Burger. We also got upsold on an order sloppy fries as an appetizer. The name does not do it justice as this concoction was fries swimming in buffalo sauce, blue cheese, teriyaki and garlic (I think) and served in a trough. The "dish"  tasted like someone dumped every condiment from the fridge on the fries. Add the fact that our order the fries were under cooked and a little raw so this was a bust for us.

    Burgers:
    They were huge!
The Big TC was a 3/4 lb burger stuffed between 2 slices of Texas toast. Ensure you know how to detach your jaw like an anaconda to be able to take a bite out of this bad boy.The sheer size of the burger wore me out just trying to bite it. It was a decent burger but lacked anything to wow me. The patty lacked an type of seasoning or taste. So if taster matters for you then stick to burger boutiques or steakhouses.

Another gripe about this place is they give you chips instead of fries with their burgers. C'mon man! You pay 12+ for a monster burger and only get a splash of chips? Boo!

This place is on the must list if you follow man vs food or for any monster killers but that's it.. Just make sure that you bring a defibrillator with you before you try to take down the Thurmanator.

One more tip. Hit up Jeni's Ice Cream up the street after you hit this place up...

So you're a newbie to Thurman Cafe.  I'll be a good YELP'r before I set you off on another search for a burger.

Go to Thurman's and enjoy what Wendy's only dreams of when it brands itself HOT AND JUICY.  The burger world is JJJJJJJ-Juicy at this little cavern.  I've tried "The Johnny", "The Blazin' Burger" and "The Thurmanator" - and everytime I've felt as if my hands and fingers met with Mr. Gooey on the first bite.  That's due, in part, because I order my burgers medium rare (all burgers at T.C. come medium well; all about size of the meat patty).  The other reason is T.C. buries their 3/4 Pounders with surprise sauces, tomatoes, and delicious add-ons.  Every beef pie sandwich will come to order and in a large portion.  Very cool.  And they arrive hot, plump and succulent to the senses.

The sides at T.C. are large plank fries or chips burgers.  If hunger demands Apps get ordered, my groups have leaned towards mini pizza to prep your pallet.  They're quite good.  But at Thurman's the burger is the aggressor.  As you sit in a booth or small table with your honey or a few buddies you'll see these huge plated concoctions roll out of the kitchen and odds are you'll be catching yourself drooling.  The art behind a burger at Thurman's is unique.

Now,... it's too good not to write.  "Where's the beef?"

Some will say Thurman's is quaint and waiting is part of the ambience.  Poppycock!  It's a small place and cooking up so much ground chuck takes time.  So there is an ante room to stand around and quench your thirst when you walk in.  Your entire party must be present in order to be seated.  The owners won't let you "save a seat" so be prepared to eyeball the late arriver.  The wait to get in is rough.  And once you're in being served is another test of survival.  Perhaps that's why Thurman's "ambience" wins some and loses others. One man's trash is another's treasure.  License plates, t-shirts and the likes cover the walls.  Novelty will take you only so far (newbie visitor - it's fun) but that ends quickly with me.  I keep asking myself, "why not dump the ante-room and serve more people?", huh?

For burgers - there aren't enough stars for Thurman's.  But to get in, seated and served?  It leaves me at A-OK as an overall experience.

This is one of those places you have to try as a Columbus resident. So, I did. My group (me, bf and his brother) got lucky when our friends who had been waiting over an hour decided to go somewhere else and hand us their spot in line. Even with that, we still waited nearly an hour. But again, we had to try it.

The dining area is pretty small (hence the wait), but they've got as many tables as they can hold. I got super excited when I saw Magic Hat #9 was on tap and ordered one, not realizing I was going to be nearly full when it was time to order. Oops.

Bf and his brother had to be manly men and try the Thurmanator. Seriously, this thing is a novelty item. You should not and probably cannot eat this much, and if you do, you will be regretful and ill. Naturally, the guys went at it anyway. I, on the other hand, ordered the smallest available burger - still nearly a pound of meat and impossible to finish more than half.

The wait and ungodly portion sizes aside, this place is great. Amazing burger, tasty fries, great service, divey atmosphere, cheap prices and fun way to spend a meal.

I loved it. Was in the OH area and made this a MUST STOP place along the trip. I, like many others, saw this place on TV and just had to try it. I can say, it did not disappoint.

We stared off with the Cordon Blue Balls. They were ok. Not really my favorite just because I as not a fan, but they were still tastey. I think next time I go, I might skip those, cuz really, here, it is all about Realestate.

I had The Thurmanator. I can say, it was done perfect. From top to bottom, it was amazing. I was not able to finish it, but there were at least four others that had ordered it while we were there, and two were able to finish it. For me, it was just as good the next day.

The meat was so good. Seasoned perfect. Juicy. I just loved everything about it and will be back.

But more then that, the staff there was excellent. So very nice. Very polite. Just people that you like being around. Friendly. Just a great group of people!

So really, it is bitter sweet that I live so far away. Good because it is an absolute treat to have a burger there, and if I had lived closer, I would find myself there all the time! I am all ready planning on going back in 2013.

For fun, great group of people, for a BIG burger or even for a smaller one, the burgers are great. I would recommend this place!! It was Great!!

Thank you to the Thurman Staff for making our first visit there a great one!

What I love about Thurman's: the burgers are pretty good.Often I take a bit home with me, because they're so damn big. I love burgers. I love beer. All should be great?

Well, the last time, I was with a small group, and all our burgers were screwed up. The time before that? Same thing. The service is diminishing, even when we are kicked back and enjoying some beer. And the bar service has been... lacking. Like, sitting there, and everyone around us being served and we're begging for a beer or even a little attention.

Don't get me wrong, it's Thurman's, there is no other like it, I will be back, I just hope it gets better and not worse.

Went back again last night. First time in a while, and I have to say that the quality is going down. The burger, while juicy, was extremely bland. I got a bacon cheeseburger, and thankfully the bacon was high quality. The burger had little to no seasoning, and didn't taste like anything. Also, they say their burgers come with kettle chips. Not the case. Mine came with Ruffles crumbs. I said something to one of the bartenders, and he just said, "Aw you noticed. Only one other person has ever said anything."

    Wow.

    My Bias:

    Loves: A good burger
    Likes: Bar atmospheres
    Dislikes: Waiting
    Hates: Sketchy neighborhoods

We dropped into the Thurman Cafe after hearing about it on Man vs. Food.  I couldn't find a place to park on the street, so I parked a block away...until I realized that if I left my car there, I would probably come back to find it stripped and on blocks.  After a bit of searching, I squeezed into a spot close to the bar.

The wait wasn't bad for a Sunday night.  Maybe 20 minutes.  Once seated, the nice but eccentric staff got us started with some mini corn dogs.  They were freaking delicious.  After that, my wife had a bacon cheese burger and I got the Jonnie Burger.  It was fantastic.

If you like the bar atmosphere and want some good grub, try this place - just don't be surprised when you have to call a tow truck to get your car home.

    oof.

So I'd put off trying this place for a long time simply because it was always busy when we came by.  But as my time in Columbus wound down to a close, I decided to persist and at least try once more.  Lo and behold, around six pm on a Thursday night, we walked in, and were seated right away!  Unfortunately, "Call Me Maybe" was playing as we sat down, which wasn't a great impression, but the music soon faded into the background.

I had already glanced over the menu online, and knew what I wanted; Dan tsk'ed over the beer list, and ended up getting something on tap.  I ordered the garden burger, and he got the Thurman burger.  When our plates arrived, he was stunned at the size of the burger on his plate.  I knew I wasn't going to finish mine, so cut it in half and set one piece aside for tomorrow's lunch before proceeding.  We both ordered our burgers "medium;" the beef was juicy and flavorful, and there was plenty of it!  Mine had chopped green peppers and mushrooms (not very many) along with the lettuce, tomato, pickle, and mayo.  Dan's had sliced ham, mushrooms, peppers, along with the fixings.  The burgers were so big that it was a little difficult to get all the flavors together into one bite.  Neither of us even attempted to eat without a knife and fork.

The service throughout the evening was rather brisk and erratic, which I was expecting, but Dan was not terribly impressed by.  Though the burgers were good, they are so large that it is really not worth it for me -- someone who could probably make three meals out of one of them.  I'm glad I tried Thurmans, but it certainly doesn't make my list of places that I'll miss in Columbus.

Yeah yeah..... I know there are already a million reviews on this place.... so here's one more.  I've been dieing to go to this place since I saw it on "Man vs Food" a couple years ago when I was still living in Oklahoma City.... after finally moving to Columbus it still took me a year to get here... but I finally did!!!  And I regret every minute I wasted by not coming here sooner!!!!!

It's better than it looks on TV.  Awesome place!!!  Awesome food!!!!
I had the Thurman burger and a plate of fries.
Obviously the burgers are huge.... its their trademark!  Definitely the biggest I've ever had .... and defiantly one of the tastiest!!!  The flavor was incredible!!!
As for the fries.... share them... a plate each person is WAY too much!!  VERY Tasty!!  I did eat them all, but I was completely miserable.... with a happy face!!

My advice.... if you haven't been here yet, don't do like I did and wait forever... GO NOW AND LOVE THE PLACE FOR ALL ITS WORTH!!!

I think everyone in Columbus should go to Thurman's at least once. You kind of need to have the experience under your belt to properly discuss other burger joints in the 'Bus at the water-cooler.

The burgers are huge and the various toppings are creative. Not necessarily creative in a gastronomic/culinary sense, but in a basic-burger topping sense. You'll have things like A-1 sauce, slaw, onion rings, etc on your bun, as opposed to brie, remoulades, or whatever. I guess this is the most burger variety you can get without venturing into FoodNetwork Land.

I'm a big eater, and even I prefer to split one. It'll be messy, so I use a fork and knife after it's been bifurcated.

The burgers come with chips, which sort of doesn't appeal to me for some reason. During my last visit, I asked for onion rings instead of chips (expecting an appropriate upcharge), but really they just brought me an order of rings, additional to the chips on the side. I didn't want that.

With the huge portion of fried pickles and the onion rings, I was over-fried, but that was my fault. The app came in a basket and we were served Styrofoam plates, which seems odd for a legit restaurant with waitservice.

The place is dark. Some may say "it has character!" and others will say "it needs a cleaning." Frankly, this joint doesn't look like it's been properly cleaned since 1983. When you start to look around at all the stuff on the walls (dust and grease catchers), you may get a little freaked out.

Ignore that, and enjoy a German Village/Marion Village landmark for what it's worth. Then, go talk to your friends about it and stick Thurman's in your hierarchy of burger faves as appropriate.

With that, I won't need to visit Thurman's for at least another year.

    Meh.

    1.  The service here is a little annoying.  The server we had was one of those overly friendly types who thinks it hilarious to make it seem like whatever the dude is doing is some sort of affront to what the lady of the table deserves.  It's obnoxious.  (Note: we were able to sit right down, though, which was nice.  Usually it's a long wait.  It was 10pm, though...)

    2.  Beer selection is OK - they had a seasonal Great Lakes on tap, which was welcome.

    3.  Atmosphere:  the place is cramped, feels perpetually dirty and sticky, and is divey in a non-endearing way.

    4.  Food:  Honestly, I don't actually care for the burger.  I've had better from other places in town (including, to be honest, Five Guys), and the toppings and bun were nothing to write home about.  Fried pickles and onion rings were OK but, again, nothing life changing or unavailable elsewhere.  The portions seem to be the only notable aspect of this place. A big pile of average food is still just average.

And so, to quote Lisa Simpson:  Meh...M-E-H. Meh.

DEREK: Thurman Cafe is small but huge on food. I actually believe that the restrooms may be larger than the dining room - they may be able to squeeze a few tables in there too!

DEREK: Take your time ordering your favorite burger here due to changing menu options and finding the right burger combinations of your liking. Burgers are 3/4 lb. so you should not be leaving here hungry - although you will probably starve waiting for a table during peak times.

DEREK: If you are from or love the way Primanti Bros. in Pittsburgh does food you will love the Pittsburger or Jason burgers. I opted for the Jason burger that had the slaw and fries on it also. On top of the traditional Pittsburgh items it also comes with fried egg and Genoa salami. Absolutely awesome burger, but with so many toppings you just can't fully sample all the flavors from all the toppings. But Thurman Cafe is over the top so don't worry and just indulge in the burger goodness.

DEREK: So T how was your hot dog - I mean huge dog? Well, I do thank you for the sample you gave me and it was good. Did it seem like you were eating a tube of lunch meat?

DEREK: A word of advice needs to be given for some of the sides you may order. Do not let your fresh cut fries or onion rings get too cold. The fries get soggy and the onion rings loose their crispy texture if you let them sit too long. So while you ponder how to attack your burger be sure munch down your sides.

Three of us went in at about 2pm on a Friday afternoon.  We may have waited about 20 minutes before we were seated.
Besides the man who took the food order and the bartender, the staff had award winning personalities (note sarcasm here).
We had the fried pickle chips to start which were mediocre and had the chicken club, the Jason and the Pittsburger.  All were HUGE and absolutely delicious but what stole the show for me was the fries.  Any place that has fresh cut fries automatically gets extra points.
I'll definitely go back here when I'm in town and in the mood for a burger. It's worth the wait!

First off, I only review burgers.  This review is long overdue.  3 years ago when I was on a long term assignment in Ohio, I visited The Thurman Cafe.  I had heard about it from the Man v. Food episode.  A coworker and I arrived in the early afternoon to beat the dinner crowd.  I think we got there at 4pm, party of 2.  No problem right?  1 hour+ wait.  The waiting area was packed full of patrons ready to get their burger on.  Ugh.  When we finally got seated (close to the bar), the burger was worth the wait.  I might have been a little biased having ate almost nothing buy grilled chicken breast sandwiches for 6 months, but from what I remember, I was all smiles.  The burger is not good enough for me to want to wait an hour for it in the future, but you definitely have to try it at least once.

    WHAT I ORDERED:
    Main ---
The Western Burger: 4/5 (3/4 pound beast of a burger with a wallop of taste)

    Sides ---
Combo Basket (1/2 fries, 1/2 onion straws): 4/5

    STAFF:
Friendly, but frenzied due to the number of patrons

    WAIT TIME:
Make sure your iPhone has enough juice in the battery

    PORTION:
    Huge

    BANG FOR YOUR BUCK:
    Very reasonable

    WOULD I RETURN:
Only if I found myself in Ohio again and there was no wait.  ; )

I almost failed calculus in college.  I don't remember the Alamo.  Sometimes, I can't even remember my own phone number.

There are a lot of things I don't know, but food ain't one of them.  I know what's good, and if you tell me there's a "best burger in Columbus", you can be sure I'm going to try it and let you know how good it really is.

Now that I've finally tried Thurman's burgers, I want to ask what the hell everyone is smoking, and can I have some?  I can see how if you romanticize the food at the Thurman Cafe because you ate it in a haze of alcohol-soaked glory, it could possibly rate higher on the awesome-meter than your typical burger.  But stone sober, on a Saturday morning, these burgers were really not anything more than "meh".  Their size seems at first to be a virtue-- "3/4 of a pound for under $10!  Cha-ching!", but eventually you realize the massive size is these burgers' Achilles heel.  Cooking something that thick sucks all of the moisture and flavor right out of it.  Yeah, Thurman's offers all kinds of tasty-sounding toppings, but true burger lovers don't eat for the toppings-- we're in in for the beef, baby.

I will give the Thurman Cafe some points for excellent historic dive-bar ambiance (the menu printed in Comic Sans made it even better), and some more points for the pretzel bites, which were delicious.  Unfortunately, I'll have to continue my quest for the best burger in Columbus.
