Went to Shadowbox for the first time last Friday and had a blast. The production was Taboo and it was a hoot! Warning: Do not take any uptight friends or relations, they either won't "get" it or will be offended. The audience is forewarned so....
The first vignette was hysterical and a creative twist on a young man's "coming out."
The musical interludes, performed by the house band, worked well with the show, notably The Police song, "Don't Stand So Close to Me."
You will get solicited at every turn: tickets for future shows, supporting their youth program, table-side performances for some occasion or the other, etc and it does get a little tedious considering the food and drink prices are, well, pricey.
Speaking of their food... DON'T DO IT! Â My companion and I ate several items and none were good. The pizza tasted like the grocery store variety with some extra items thrown on top to disguise the fact that that sucker spent a considerable amount of time in a freezer. Didn't help... worst pizza EVER! Beef tenderloin sandwich was chewy and tough to stomach. Our appetizer probably resided in the freezer, next to the pizza, before being microwaved and served.
The wretched food will not keep me from attending again, though. The talent and creativity I saw on stage more than made up for it. I'll just be a little smarter next time and eat before I get there.
Went to see a production of Tabboo (sketch comedy of tabboo topics i.e. death, diversity, coming out, etc.). I had such a blast and was blown away by how talented the performers are! I have to admit I'm not a broadway expert by any means, so I don't have much comparison, but these people can sing and act! Feels more like NYC than Columbus, Ohio.
The show itself was hilarious! One of my favorite sketches was about the politically correct culture we live in and how much advertisers think about diversity awareness in commercials. I wont' say anymore so as not to spoil it. So funny and so true.
I heeded the advice of previous yelpers and did not eat dinner there. The prices are steep for both drinks and food. 2 beers + 2 wines = $23? Okay I guess. I do like that your servers are the performers of the show - definitely a cool twist. Be aware that at intermission you will be hit up by these performers to buy tickets, donate to charity, etc. It can feel a bit like walking through a mall and trying to avoid the phone kiosks. "Hey wanna buy a phone??"
Overall though, I had an amazing time!! Will definitely go again! Â
Also, be prepared to sit at a table with strangers. I have no issue with it at all, especially since everyone there is super friendly, but something to keep in mind if only a group of 2.
Shadowbox Live is a hoot! Â
I was blown away by the talent on display at this intimate theatre in the Brewery District.
My friends and I were treated to a montage of sorts which included, an abundance of comedy, monologues, killer music and dark rock opera. Â These performers excel in many genres, not to mention their incredible sex appeal.
I wasn't wowed by the food, but I was impressed by the entire staff, which coincidentally, are the stage performers. Â
If you want an intimate, broadway type theatre experience, check this place out!
