Great experience! Absolutely breathtaking mansion and very good food. They treated us so well - after being treated not so well by some newer places across from Notre Dame. The servers were great - lots of ghost stories, very attentive, happy to help us, all very cool! We can't wait to come back next year. If you eat here - make sure you tour the whole mansion .

Tippecanoe is truly unique for it's historical significance, yet continues to feel dusty and dated when it comes to their service and food.
I have been too many times to count - brunch, lunch, dinner, pre-fix dinner events, cocktails and most recently the Downtown South Bend Wine Walk.
They do a large brunch; however, the food fails to impress. Â Average omlet station, traditional breakfast sides, fruit, etc. Â Desserts are appear and taste store-bought. Â Brunch is overpriced and 18% gratuity is added regardless of your party size.
The lunch menu is nice, but again just mediocre food.
Dinner tends to be a little pricey for the quality, but it does appear they are trying to be a little creative with specials and other events.
My most recent visit was for the Downtown South Bend Wine Walk on July 11, which doesn't even warrant the two stars. Â We weren't even greeted when we walked in and had to ask where to go for the wine walk and were directed to the second floor bar / lounge. Â The area was full, but they weren't too busy as several parties were heading out. Â There were three bartenders / servers yet no one acknowledged us, said hello or offered to serve us. Â We waited a short time and then left.
On our way out we stopped at the hostess stand to let the General Manager know we were leaving since no one was available to serve us. Â To her credit, she did follow us out and ask if there was anything she could do, but we decided to move on.
Hopefully they will address their issues and provide a much needed rejuvenation to the place. Â For now, visit Tippecanoe for a tour and history lesson and find another local establishment to dine.
This was my second visit to Tippecanoe - the first being about three years ago. It was even better this time than I recall it being in 2009. EVERYTHING was simply superb: the setting, the service, and, especially, the food.
Both my business associate and I started with the French onion soup. It was among the finest that I have ever had. Hot & cheesy. The dinner roll was spectacular - fresh and piping hot. I had the spinach side salad with my entree. It was delicious; the spinach was fresh, the dressing delicious and there was just the perfect amount of dressing.
Now to the aforementioned entree: I generally do not order prime rib since I will not eat fat. But since it is a house specialty, I went for it. Am I ever glad that I did. Since I do not eat it often, I am not a connoisseur of prime rib. But I cannot imagine enjoying a meal more. I ordered my prime rib "medium" since I do not like it blood-red (do not like it overcooked either). It was just the PERFECT combination of tenderness and doneness. And I was able to eat almost all of it since it had very little fat. I ordered the medium-sized cut (I forget what they call it). But I was flat-out blown away by the overall experience.
The waitress (I mean, "server"), Stephanie, was superb, also. She was very attentive without being overbearing and she kept my coffee cup filled (the coffee was excellent, also). My only complaint was that they fed me so well that I was unable to find room for dessert. And the dessert cart looked like it was packed with all sorts of goodies.
Here's a bonus: Although it is, by no means, cheap, it is not THAT pricey. Not at all, really, considering what you get. Two of us ate well, my associate had a drink and, including tip, it came to less than a hundred bucks.
The next time that I am in South Bend, you can bet that I am going to visit Tippecanoe again!
Who doesn't like a brunch buffet?
Freaks, that's who.
We met up with some of my family for the brunch buffet at Tippecanoe Place. We were celebrating my cousin's graduation from college, and the best way to do that would be stuffing our faces with delicious brunch foods.
Tippecanoe Place is basically a huge, 3 story mansion that lays out a spread of brunch food. It seems really well suited for weddings (TONS OF SEATING OMG), because I can't imagine filling this place for brunch.
There's an omelet station, which is where I went first. I got a ham, mushroom and onion omelete. I also got some bacon, sausage and fresh fruit. We were sat on the second floor dining room, which was nice an cozy. It easily accommodated our party of 12. There's also an elevator that goes to all the floors, in case of you have people in your party that can't do stairs.
My only complaints about the food were that the coffee was luke warm (sad face) and  that there wasn't just a plain scrambled eggs/poached egg station. The omelet was good, but I'm more of a scrambled eggs type of girl.
The service was nice enough and our brunching didn't disappoint. I wouldn't hesitate to come back!
I absolutely love this restaurant. If you are going for dinner, I would recommend ordering the duck. If you are looking for a more casual, cheaper dining experience, eat during lunch hours. The prices are less expensive. I had the pulled pork sandwich and it was huge, let alone delicious.
Also, take a tour of the mansion, there is a lot of history there!

Delightful risotto ball, frisée salad with bacon and tomatoes, shrimp with saffron rice, prime rib with root vegetables and a coffee marscapone salty sweet brûlée like dessert!  Paired wines, mmmm.  The new chef is young and lively.  I would have like more root veggies....very good and a warmer slice of prime rib with a choice of cooking, but the meal was great.
Give Tippe a try if it's been a while....they deserve it! Â The deco inside was beautiful for the holidays.
Was in town for the Navy/ND game and was taken here by local friends. I was truly amazed at the quality of the Prime Rib, studebacher cut, bone in, and the reasonable prices! The selection of wine was not huge but they had some great wines at great prices. I will be back the next time I'm in South Bend.
Review Source:Tippecanoe Place is  built within the former Studebaker family mansion. This beautifully constructed monument to wealth and excess, was the perfect backdrop for a late-night anniversary dinner during the Halloween season. Â
For starters, although the food was not extraordinary, it was good. Admittedly, the steaks were a little on the thin side and "medium" is actually "medium-well" in the chef's world. However, the menu selections were reasonably priced and a fraction of what similar venues charge.
The waitstaff was absolutely wonderful. From the moment we walked into the place, from the hostess to our server, everyone did everything they could do to make us feel right at home.
The ambiance was beautiful. We felt that we had been transported back in time when we walked through the door. Beautiful woodwork, plush carpet, and ambient lighting made for an elegant dining experience. Guests have the run of the establishment and are free to explore all three floors and basement. Waitstaff are thoroughly knowledgeable and freely share information about the history of the mansion and even regaled us with a couple of personal ghost stories.
We have spent three times what we paid at other restaurants and not have had as good a time as we did at Tippecanoe Place and will most definitely make it a "must do" on our next stay in the area.
This is an awesome place to have a great meal in a unique place. Â It's like a castle that became a restaurant. Â The staff was super nice too and the I liked the eerie feel of the place. Â
Low-income ppl beware..THIS PLACE IS NOT CHEAP! Â But worth it if you're looking for something a little different.
I don't see what all of the hype is about. Â I have given this place three good faith attempts to win me over but the service is just absolutely terrible. Â I have been to brunch one three separate occasions a year apart each and was serve with different staff each time and it was bad each time. Â Each time I felt like the place was a bit damp and dingy too. Â If you want a conmensurate brunch (actually superior) for less of a price, head over to Granite City in Mishawaka. Â the service is outstanding and the brunch is fresh, clean, and excellent.
Review Source:Passing through South Bend on a Sunday night means not everything is open. We were lucky enough to make the last seating at  Tippecanoe. The setting is incredible. It is fun to dine in an historic, stone mansion. The staff was friendly and eager to tell us about the mansion. They even brought over a leaflet that I found interesting. While the food didn't live up to the surroundings, it was quite good  - just not gourmet good. But it was also not outrageously priced so we felt satisfied.
Review Source:I don't know if the restaurant gives lesser quality food if you order from the pre-fix meal but if they do, that is definitely a mistake, as I have already told my friends and family to not waste their money on the food. My husband and I went during Restaurant week - 3 meals for $25 per person.
The french onion soup was good, but the main course, medium rare prime rib, was cold, not juicy and it was a thin cut. I've had MUCH better prime rib at less 'fancier' places. The dessert selections looked good but was so so - I had a crème brûlée version of cheesecake and my husband had the red velvet cake.
I do have to say that the staff was friendly. The bartender, Angie, was hilarious and my husband and I had a great time chatting with her. I may return here for drinks only and head someplace else for dinner.
I later looked up the prices for food here - prime rib is very pricey and if the quality is anything like I got on the pre-fix meal, It is definitely not worth it. You can enjoy the ambiance and history of the house by just walking in for free. I will not be returning here for food.
Decent food and a very reasonable price. The history and building are what really stands out at Tippecanoe. It is a walk back into the early 1920's in this mansion. The woodwork is amazing. It is a great place to dine if you have a few hours to walk around and visit the many rooms in this Studebaker Family original.
Review Source:I must be missing something. Â The steaks here are low quality and always overcooked. Â The rice tastes like Uncle Ben. Â Appetizers are pretty decent. Â Service is pretty awful. Tippecanoe is located in the old Studebaker family home in South Bend, Indiana, and it combines great atmosphere with amazing food. Â I do recommend reservations on football weekends, though, as they tend to fill up quickly. (For both dinner on Friday/Saturday nights ... and Sunday Brunch)
We enjoyed a delicious steak dinner, accompanied by a wonderful baked cheese appetizer and a unique cranberry spinach salad. Â We were entirely too full to have dessert, but they all looked simply wonderful.
If you're looking for a nice, quiet, romantic destination while in South Bend, Tippecanoe is the place to be!
Every large and medium size town seems to have a converted mansion now restaurant, South Bend is no exception. The Tippecanoe is located in the old Studebaker family home, for those who do not remember Studebaker was an auto built until the late 50s. The family fortune began before Ford thought of the Model T , they built wagon wheels.
The food is above average for South Bend, but not necessarily exceptional, but the staff, in particular our waitress Cathy was exceptional. She almost made us feel as if we were visiting friends for dinner; not part of a commercial endeavor.
The experience evolved from a try once, to see the home, to a welcome visit to the neighbor's destination. If Cathy  is an example of the quality of the staff than the Tippecanoe should not be missed .
why am i here? i mean in south bend..town of maybe two taxi drivers but lots of random shopping centers/stores sprinkled about...welll, my little bro just graduated from nd and we were here celebrating as much as we could in this town, which isn't a horrible town, just..ya know, middle of nowhere. anyway, tippecanoe was one of our celebratory dinner places and it was great! the restaurant is actually a mansion which gives off a very cozy and interesting ambiance. the waitstaff are all attentive and our waiter was great. food is pretty good, no fireworks, but i ate everything plus dessert. but for eating in a cool setting and their carrot cake, i'd go back..that is if i'm ever back in south bend...
Review Source:I attended a dinner event at Tippecanoe in the 3rd floor banquet room. The food wasn't bad but wasn't remarkable either. I wound up being served the New York Strip, which had good texture and was properly cooked but had way too much peppercorn sauce on it. And yes, I say I "wound up" with the strip because I didn't actually order a strip - more on that later.
Unfortunately the service was very poor and is what forces me to rate Tippecanoe poorly. Waiters would not bring us alcoholic drinks, so we had to go down to the 2nd floor bar to get them, which was pretty ridiculous. Most of us wound up not ordering drinks because we didn't want to leave the room in the middle of the banquet, so it was Tippecanoe's loss more than ours, I suppose. Also, they were very bad about filling water and replacing bread.
Worse yet, they did not have enough filet mignon entrees for our party. This was a particularly egregious error because everyone had placed their entree selections well in advance of the banquet dinner (I believe we submitted the entree selections several days if not a week in advance). They were two filets short, and just my luck, I was one of the people with nothing but empty tablecloth in front of me.
One of the waiters confirmed that it was their mistake, and while he apologized profusely, we had to wait nearly ten minutes for the two of us to get replacement entrees. It was very awkward to be at a banquet and have all but two people at one of the tables have their entrees and none of the others wants to start eating because they think it'll be impolite.
And to make this all even worse, instead of getting filets as ordered, they just slipped us New York Strips. I don't really mind the substitution so much as they never even told us that they substituted it nor did they apologize for it - as if they thought we wouldn't know the difference between a filet and a strip. The two of us who got substituted strips decided not to complain because the table had been waiting long enough to eat anyway; I'd been trying to get everyone else to start eating without us and certainly wasn't going to delay them longer. The substitution was also awkward for the table, especially for the people who did get their filets as ordered, because everyone else knew we didn't get filets.
They again failed during dessert to have the appropriate number of ice cream bowls sent up, but fortunately it did not take them ten minutes and a stealth substitution to get things "right" that time. If they hadn't had more ice cream I wonder if they would have slipped us cheesecake instead without telling us and think we wouldn't notice... *sigh*.
Maybe sometime I will give their normal dining room a chance and just assume that we had a bad experience because they don't care about their banquet customers. However, that night soured my opinion of the restaurant, which most certainly is not "fine dining" as they claim to be - at least not in the banquet room.
It's quite obvious that Tippecanoe Place is the "swanky" restaurant here in South Bend. I grew up in a historic town with lots of Civil War-era homes, and we had several similar places there - restaurants located in historic houses where the locals congregate on special occasions. The decor is very Gilded Age-robber baron-esque - apparently this was the old Studebaker house, which is pretty cool.
My husband took me here for my birthday. We had a reservation and were seated promptly, although I wasn't a fan of the table we had - too close to another large table and somewhat awkwardly sized for a romantic conversation for two. I felt like we were shoved in a corner, though to be fair to them they had a lot of big groups that night.
I had the whitefish Oscar which was a special that night. I was very pleasantly surprised to see large, whole chunks of crabmeat instead of shredded crabmeat topping this dish. The fish was moist and flavorful, and the portion was very generous. I don't remember what my husband had (I think it was the steak) but I do know he liked it.
Dessert was really yummy. I had the Frangelico cream cheese mousse which I thought would be a nice light dessert but turned out to be basically a hazelnut-flavored cheesecake in a cup. Heaven! Husband had the frangipani, an apricot dessert which was also very good.
The service was okay - my major gripe is that our waiter didn't come back to refill our water glasses in a timely manner. Nothing is worse than wanting to enjoy your tasty entree and not being able to because you're too darn thirsty to eat any more. Not cool, especially at such a high-end place.
All in all it was a nice experience and I'm sure we'll be back for another special occasion, hopefully on a less busy night.
I got the lamb chops and it was delicious, very tender. They have a big wine selection and the salad that came with the entree was light and appetizing.
The restaurant is in a castle like building and the interior is very posh. I kinda felt like an intruder in someone else's rich house.
WOW! Ever since the change of ownership, the food and service has gone up one notch. As far as I am concerned this, coupled with the fact they will soon start renovations, has them listed as one of my top picks for South Bend.
P.S. Try their pastry chef's selection on the dessert cart... has been out of this world every time!
The food at Tippecanoe isn't very memorable. Â I've been twice for dinner, had chicken both times, and wasn't too impressed.
An extra star is given for their ability to handle crowds. Â I went with a group of around 20 for a parent's weekend dinner and we had our own room and were taken very good care of.
I'm eager to try the brunch, it seems to have gotten excellent reviews.
This receives my vote for best Sunday brunch in Michiana.
At S13.99 a person (drinks extra) this brunch offers a Belgium waffle bar, an omelet bar, and a lunch buffet with carving station spread across the foyer and one side room. Although the omelet bar does not offer egg white or egg beater omelets, there are plenty of healthy options for the weight conscience.
On the lunch buffet there was herb crusted baked chicken, two different kinds of lettuce salad and a full selection of fruit (very good for South Bend in the beginning of April).
To top everything off was a table full of ooey gooey desserts. Lemon bars, jersey dirt, brownies with fudge icing, chocolate clairs are just a few treats waiting for you.
Our waitress was very nice, attentive and took very good care of us.
Reservation recommended, this places is crazy during Notre Dame home games & events.

I have eaten here a few times for company dinners and such. I love it.
The decor rocks, I love old homes and mansions so eating here is always a treat. The food was perfect both times I've been here. I had lobster and filet both times and both times they were cooked to perfection. Some of the tastiest lobster I've had outside of the coast.
The price is a little for the area, but well worth it for a special night out.
I've been to the Sunday brunch twice and was not disappointed. Â The made-to-order omelets and fresh belgian waffles are my favs, but they also have all kinds of sides and a carving station for those who are closer to the "unch" than the "br"(eakfast)...
I've been for dinner twice and have not been impressed with the food either time. Â Which is a shame for what we spent. Â Weekday lunches are tasty and an excellent deal -- a great way to check out the ambience of the restaurant without spending a fortune.
This place gets a 3.75 for the food, a 5 for the cool decor and the building, and a 4.5 for the service. I didn't think their food was spectacular, but it is pretty good. The old mansion which houses the restaurant is a historical site in the area, and it's definitely worth checking out. Â I have been there for multiple occasions, and I have come to a conclusion that their seafood isn't all that good. Go to Bonefish in Mishawaka if you want good seafood. Â Their prime rib was pretty good, however. Â They also have Sunday brunch. Having eaten at famous brunch places in Chicago and the Gandy Dancer in Ann Arbor, MI, it wasn't the best brunch I've had.
