My hubby and I tried this for the first time tonight. We heard about Tom and Johnny's thru a Groupon for the Ironman Challenge. Since I am a lightweight meat eater my hubby was doing this challenge solo.
The challenge consisted of 8 Fire wings, a full order of fries and a 2lb cheeseburger with all the trimmings and atlease one 20oz carbonated beverage.
The Groupon stated that we needed to make a reservation too complete the challenge, so we did.
We arrived on time and the lobby was empty. We were greeted by a nice and spunky waitress and she seemed excited to see another Ironman Challenger.
The Owner came over and told us the rules...2 1/2 hours too complete the full meal, no sharing and he must sign the waiver before eating the hot wings.
The Owner told us that he brings the food in stages. He would bring first the 8 wings and when those were completed the fries would be made and brought out and then after fries the burger would be made and brought out.
First up was the 8 fire wings!! We were told they were out of ranch and bleu cheese was the only option.
While hubby waited 20 minutes for the wings to be ready I ordered the daily special. A 1/3lb cheese burger with a drink and fry for $8.99. I asked too upgrade my fries to the Chili Cheese Fries and was told they were out of Chili also. Â I settled with the Vampire Slayer Garlic Fries and was NOT disappointed! Yes they were greasy..but it's french fries, so of course they will be greasy! Â The seasoning and taste was excellent and left me wanting more!!
The hand packed burger was placed ontop of a tasty ciabatta roll and tasted like a better version of a Sausage McMuffin from McDonalds (but with good meat and not greasy!!)
The burger was tasty and the fries were delicious, but I was half way thru my meal and still had not received my soda. I went up and helped myself to the soda machine.
Hubby ate all the wings and fries and ate 3/4 of the 2lb burger with fixings and called it quits! It was a valiant effort and definitely not something to underestimate!
My only complaints are that we were told our reservation was at 6pm and that the challenge was 2 1/2 hours. Around 7:15 we asked how we were on time and was told they had not kept track of the time and that they closed at 8pm anyways. Upon our horrified faces (losing 1 hour of eating time), the waitress quickly said that if my hubby felt he could really power thru that she would be willing too stay after 8pm to let him continue.
The other issue we found was that the food was not pre-made or given in one portion. This made it so that he had considerable waiting time between each course, making it so food settled in your stomach and you started feeling full before the fries.
The overall ambiance of the restaurant was a little "off".
You could hear everything going on in the kitchen while food was being made and the 3 large TV's muted did little to distract you from the family members of the owners running about and complaining about little things in the store and about life in general.
The food was good and the Owner was personable....we will be back = )
We were out in Springfield on Saturday and thought we would try some place new for lunch. Â We decided on Tom and Johnny's. Â We should have just gone home and heated up left overs. Â When we walked in we were greeted by a young woman who was enthusiastic and pleasant. Â Then after waiting 10 minutes, an older woman sauntered - with absolutely no urgency - over to our table with no emotion what-so-ever and asked if we had decided. Â No niceties at all. Â After ordering, she sauntered over to the back of the restaurant and spent several minutes doing what seemed like re-writing the order. Â When she delivered our drinks my ice tea with no lemon had a lemon in it. Â When I asked her for one with no lemon - she seemed to get upset. Â Not my fault she didn't listen to the order. Â When she brought the tea with no lemon - it was more like brown water. Â It was terrible!! Â The burger was ok. Â The home made ciabatta bun was good. Â My cheese was completely melted so that you could barely tell that it was ever there. Â Fries were a generous portion - especially for being a "half order". Â Over all I think the visit might have been "ok" had it not been for the horrible service. Â I kept looking at the young enthusiastic waitress wondering what we had done wrong in order to get the other one. Â The food wasn't bad - but it wasn't great. Â Unfortunately we will not be back. Â There is nothing I like better than a good burger, but from now on if I'm in Springfield, I will just stick with Giant Burger.
