I've just recently started coming here and been here around six times now.  So far every visit has been very satisfying.  The fish is very fresh, the roles are packed nicely so they don't fall apart and the staff is efficient.   Most of all, their lunch special, 3 roles for $10 is a great deal!

Was psyched about going here after reading reviews.  Location, look etc in driveby made me hesitant, should have gone with gut!!! Had the ayce (all you can eat) to get a good sense of what they had, was willing to order off menu, but they were out of anything I wanted.  Sadly dissappointed, can't even give them a second chance as not worth risk of food poisoning. As they say you pay for what you get, but $50 for one adult and one child under 10 for a lunch that makes both throw up?  I  think not! I like quiet and but the few that were there are an indicator of where this restaurant is going.

Kawa in Grayslake is better. Rolls were ok. Small, fresh, but not as good as what you can get just down the road a ways in Grayslake.

Wow! What can I say? This place is a hidden gold mine. I've been living in the area for a while and I'm surprised that, as a foodie who goes around to try different restaurants, I didn't find this place earlier! I went on a thursday night. There were not alot of people around when I came and then I started to think of it as a negative sign. The staff is friendly, though the server seems to be a little bit shy but he is okay. He may be a little bit soft spoken but he is very helpful in terms of giving suggestions on which menu items are popular.

I had the All You Can Eat sushi for $19.95 (lunch price is $14.95). My impression? Amazing! For an AYCE, good price and a location like this, they serve decent quality sushi! I heard their sushi master chef has been making sushi for over 15 years.  Well I can say that this is INDEED the best sushi in the area, better than Hayashi.

Staff is great. The place is clean and presentable. I feel comfortable. The food exceeded my expectations! I would give this place 5 stars but something is missing and I don't know what it is, that is why I am going to keep coming back to find out! But don't get me wrong, this is my new favorite sushi place in the area!

Sushi was a pleasant surprise at Toshi. Our rolls -- "Tokyo" and another special -- were interesting and nicely made. The strip mall location and awkward server took a little away from the experience.

Best sushi place  in the area.  Very fresh and good selection of maki rolls.  Service is friendly and attentive.  Lots of space, but kind of hidden - behind the Golden Corral.  Please spread the word about this place, needs more traffic.

Very nice simple fresh flavors. The service is excellent, everyone is extremely helpful and friendly. The sashimi has been great every time, good and fresh. It is a very low key comfortable atmosphere. They don't attract big clouds but they should, and I bet this place will get more lively as word spreads about how good this place really is.

We had their sushi for the 1st time! Very good except we were seated in the room to the west, wasnt comfortabel as if the heat was off, other than that we will go back again! Well!, went back again and had a much better experience, did the sushi buffet! in the main dining area, on thursday night, very good quality, fresh! try it! The sushi rolls arent covered with sauce as some are and made to look extra fancy! OK! i have a good one for you, i called to find out the hours on friday night 4-5-13, they said 10;30 pm sooooo we drove  there at 10pm and the restaurant is long closed, dont tell the customers your open till 10;30 and leave before that! we do understand slow times!

Is it the 100% best sushi in the world (as a sushi snob, no), but it's really good sushi and you combine that with the AYCE for the price and selection you get with that I'd say it's one of the best in the area. I've had 3 other sushi places within 10 miles that I have been a regular at and all have kind of let me down in the last 6 months and Toshi has stepped up to fill the role. Excellent service and very good sushi! Check it out, especially if you're in for the AYCE it's a great deal!

My husband and I come here often and love the Wisconsin roll!! The fried ice cream tempura is decadent.  This is a sushi place so don't think you will not be spending some $$.  I think its worth it since this is about one of the only good sushi places in Gurnee.

My fiancé and I absolutely love sushi!! I lived in Japan for 3 years and became very knowledgable in the art of sushi and sashimi. We just moved to the area and were looking for a good place to eat sushi. The food wasn't bad! Wasn't the best but again I have been to the motherland so I find myself to be a bit teased by American sushi. The great part was the service. They hung up our coats for us and they always explained what was going on and came back on a regular basis to check on our table. I would actually give it another half star if possible just because I think AYCE sushi is a great idea. Overall decent place to eat, but nothing to write home to mom about. Green Bay roll was good.

It was good (for the Midwest), but if you leave even one sushi on your plate you'll get charged a dollar each! Careful not to order too much!

This place is great. Lots of vegetarian options and friendly staff. I agree with the other reviewer:  I hope enough people frequent this family-owned restaurant in Gurnee!

Extremely high quality sushi. The saba (mackrel) was unlike anything I've had at any other sushi restaurant - soft and pliable. The chef-owner Sonny prepares the fish himself unlike other restaurants that buy frozen factory prepared version.  Afterwards I tried the salmon skin roll which is a big test of freshness. It was also great - rich and fatty and not fishy at all. The spicy tuna rolls are excellent. They are prepared with some panko at the end for a nice crunch and additional depth of flavor.

Ambiance is great,  this is a good place for a date. Darker lighting and great decor sets the mood.

AYCE sushi is now offered every day of the week except after 4 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.

Very solid sushi joint.   Came for a light dinner....probably would give 5 stars for lunch or all you can eat as prices on those are really good for the quality.

At 8pm on a Thursday, we were the only people there, so don't let that steer you away.  The quality and freshness was perfect.

If you are at gurnee mills,  check it out.   You wont be disappointed.

Always great food and great service.  This place truly is a hidden gem.  It's around the corner from the beaten path (Gurnee Tourist sites) but DEFINITELY worth it.

The Rainbow roll and the Wasabi roll are the best I've found anywhere around, and I've been all over the world including Okinawa, Japan.  The mushroom soup is also highly recommended.

My twin baby girls love the wait staff who keep them entertained and smiling while my wife and I finally get a chance to enjoy the meal.

I couldn't ask for more except maybe for it to be socially acceptable to eat sushi every night of the week.  LOL.

Okay, went on a Saturday night, prime time.....empty.  Not a good sign...
In a weird dead spot that no one probably sees behind the Golden corrale.  No ambiance that is for sure.  Sushi is good, however they are priced too high.  Comparable to a fancy Chicago joint.  Not tryin to pay $14 a roll in nowheres~ville....and for that price I expect either big pieces or lots or raw fish, neither were present.  Theses were nice bite size, no business being priced so high.
We had the Tokyo, Wisconsin and a spicy tuna.  Some gyoza and no drinks for like 50 bucks....pretty hungry we were still....

Well, I really wanted to like this place.  If for no other reason, we need a decent sushi place up here to compete with Hiyashi.  I see a few good reviews here...perhaps it was an off night...but what good restaurants have "off-nights"?

That said, I was disappointed in this place.  Not really knowing the reputation of a new establishment, I won't get sushi right away, but instead order what I would call "staples" of typical Japanese American cuisine such as Teriyaki Chicken, Yakisoba and Vege Tempura.  Well, both the Teriyaki Chicken and Yakisoba were completely tasteless, and the tempura was a bit soggy.  I mean, it was not just "not that good".  It was plain and simply bad.  I could have made better Teri chicken from a jar at home.  The service was fine, but certainly not worth the money to be serve sub-par food.  I have been to many Japanese restaurants all over the Chicagoland area, and this has to be some of the worst food I've ever eaten.  With it hidden in the back of the strip in the old Rhapsody space, I'd be surprise it will last that long.

Someone please help me understand the Five Star ratings!

A reasonably priced sushi restaurant? With great rolls and nigiri? IN THE SUBURBS?! I've hit the m-f'in jackpot! After frequenting several sub-par sushi places in the Lake County area, I was starting to go through an existential crisis. Am I turning into one of those anti-suburb Chicagoans? Was my ex-boyfriend right about me turning into a snob? Will I ever find a decent place to satisfy my sushi cravings?

Tucked away in the heart of the tourist trap of Gurnee lies Toshi. I try to steer clear of rolls that have mayo, cream cheese, or are deep fried so my favorites are the Sky Beauty roll and the ebi or unagi nigiri. All the fish has been fresh and service has been on point. Skip all the chain restaurants in this area and get to Toshi ASAP!

The freshest sushi in Gurnee and probably for twenty miles around. The restaurant is spotlessly clean. The staff is amazing. They genuinely care about their clientele. When my husband was diagnosed with diabetes and we had to start questioning items on their menu, the waitress actually told the chef, who came out of the kitchen to discuss how the food is prepared and what's in it. We have /never/ had that happen in any other restaurant. This restaurant is tucked away behind Golden Corral off Dilley's road, and is not immediately apparent from the highway, but it is very definitely worth finding. I have never had such a consistently pleasant dining experience anywhere. I'm not just talking about one good trip. I'm talking about dozens of visits to this restaurant, and always with the same level of cleanliness, freshness, quality and friendliness. If I could eat sushi seven days a week, I would, and I would eat it at Toshi.

I don't make my way up to gurnee often but for this meal I am glad I did.

I came in for a late dinner & right away the staff seated me & was very friendly.

I also liked the decor.  From the music to the ceiling lamps to the wall decorations & the staffs attire it had a very authentic feel.

The waitress brought me a towelette to wipe my hands before the meal.  I have never had this done at a sushi restautant & I liked it.

I ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll & it was delicious.  The sushi & the rice was fresh. Freshness is obviously one of the most important qualities of a restaurant

The next most important thing is that the restaurant is clean.  This place was spotless I could have ate off of the table.

Lastly I was surprised at how nice & friendly the staff was.  I walked in right before closing & they didn't act like they were upset.  Most places try to rush you out when you walk in right before closing.  They were very friendly.

Overall I give this place 5 stars & look forward to eating here again

Excellent food, very conscientious service, lovely ambiance... a terrific experience and unexpected considering it's tucked into a kind of strip mall. Easy half-mile walk from Key Lime Cove. Very kid-friendly (they have Ramune!), but not for wild kids. Give yourself a treat and check this place out!

Visited for a late lunch today - ordered the teriyaki chicken lunch box ($9.50).  - came with a Japanese ginger-citrus salad (very good), miso soup (very good), chicken (slightly dry, but good), California roll (4 mini-sushi pieces - lacked flavor), Gyoza (two dumplings..were okay - lacked flavor).  The restaurant was clean, nicely, simply decorated.  One other group was present (it was after 2pm).  The staff was attentive and friendly.

may go back and try a sushi roll special - but very doubtful that this will unseat my favorite sushi stop (Sushi Thai)

I passed by Toshi on the way home for quite a while now. I finally got around to trying them out for lunch one day recently.

My order was ready really fast! I would say it was ready about 7 mins after I walked in and placed the order to-go.

I ordered the 8 piece sashimi lunch box to-go and I was pleasantly surprised! The fish was still very firm and brightly coloured (both indicating its freshness). The chefs placed the fish on a bed of lemons and some white radish? decor to keep the freshness and presentation. Although there was a slight lemon-taste in the fish, it was welcomed!

The lunch box also came with some white rice, salad, miso soup, and a couple of fried gyozas. Every item was separated in their own compartments, which kept all the food fresh. The salad was nothing special (iceberg lettuce, sliced carrots, and a couple other veggies), but the chefs used visibly fresh vegetables, so it was simply refreshing.

The miso soup was just right. Not too salty, but salty enough. It contained pieces of seaweed and tofu in the soup, which was a nice complement to the broth.

I definitely will be coming back to try more!

The fish was very good.  The rice was very under seasoned.  There were several fish eggs on the vegetarian rolls, which is a pet peeve.  Overall standard sushi, nothing special.  If it was cheaper it would have gotten more stars.

Chef Sonny is a 15 year veteran of sushi restaurants. This is his second establishment; the first is a popular destination Delavan, Wisconsin. With Toshi, he's opened a large, quiet space in the end of a secluded strip mall off Dilley's Road in Gurnee. I've been to Toshi multiple times for lunch and dinner and enjoyed the food each time. The lunch specials are a very good deal with 2 or 3 rolls plus soup or salad. The dinner menu is vast with hot and cold appetizers, chef specials and multiple hot and cold entrees. What is particularly good about Toshi is the quality of the sushi fish, which is delivered daily to the restaurant. Chef Sonny is friendly and it seems that this is a family run restaurant. My party was recognized as returning on the second visit, and Sonny came out and introduced himself to us. My favorite selections would have to be the special rolls, white tuna and salmon sushi, as well as the Unago-Donburi. The spicy tuna recipe is unique to Toshi, as he puts a bit of tempura crunch into the mix. Gurnee needs a superior sushi restaurant and for the quality and value, I'm a regular at Toshi.

The rolls were really good and the fish was fresh. They were very helpful and the sushi Chef came to our table several times with suggestions and to see if we liked everything. Our favorite was the caterpillar roll.

We have tried all the local Sushi restaurants at one time or another, and recently had the opportunity to try Toshi.   I think Toshi is one of the best in terms of food quality.

Tried a variety of sushi, and everything was well balanced.  Wife had Gurnee roll, green river roll, Inari roll and vegetable dragon roll. The vegetable dragon roll was the best. I had the deluxe sushi plate, with the yellowtail roll being the best.  Rice in the rolls was cooked perfectly, fish was all good quality.  The food had me excited to return and try more of their menu.

Had the tempura ice cream for dessert, which was good, but had more of a mochi ice cream soft shell, where we were expecting a crunch shell.  Even so, it was good.

Service was ok; server was inexperienced, but overall attentive, which was good.  Decor was ok - the place was huge overall, and with not many diners made it feel all the more empty.  Regardless, these were minor issues and didn't affect my overall impression.

I placed an order to go with the lady at the register who was very nice and friendly.  After placing my order she advised me that it would be 10min so I sat at the bench....she then asked if I'd like some water while I waited which I thought was a nice gesture.  Before I knew it my order was ready...so fast! It was about 5min (:

I ordered the Gyoza appetizer and the Maki Combination.  They were both delicious and fresh.  I will definately be back again!!
Overall food was great and service was outstanding!!!

My girlfriend had me try sushi for the first time a couple years  ago and I loved it.I've tried a couple different places and I like them.we always go with my friend who comes up from Florida.we decided to try toshi for the first time and can safely say and honestly say best sushi I have ever had. we got the sushi for two which can actually feed all three of us. It came with California roll spicy Tina roll which is my favorite and 18 pieces of chefs choice sushi. It was amazing the chef chose red snapper, eel, white tuna, tuna, salmon and one other one it was so good we actually ordered three more rolls lol I highly recommend this place I will be going there again this weekend.

As a sushi-lover's couple, we were so thrilled to see a new sushi restaurant open around our house. And after dining there, we just have to decide this one as a keeper. Their restaurant isn't the fanciest of all but simple and clean. We experienced good and attentive service. Having a fairly varied menu with reasonable price is a plus to Toshi.
I love their spicy salmon roll and baby octopus salad. Dragon roll quite good too, they put cucumber instead of shrimp in the middle, makes it not too filling.
We totally had a blast knowing we can have tasty, affordable sushi within reach. Best of luck, Toshi!

Throughly enjoyable experience. The sushi was fresh and delicious. The staff super friendly and efficient. The decor and ambiance bright and welcoming. It is a little hidden location wise but when you find it, you'll love it.
