I love gyros, but most gyro places look like unsanitary, disgusting bilge pits. Â Tzatziki Grill is an exception. Â This place could be a clean room at Intel, at least by contemporary gyro shoppe standards. Â Product is tasty and prepared quickly, even when the store is thronged with drunks after last call. Â Perfect place to sober up after a visit to Neo.
Review Source:ate here on a whim because my beloved Aloha Eats was closed early because it was new years. I shared a beef and lamb platter which came with rice, a pita and beans (?) and a yummy greek salad, the dressing and feta cheese were key.
i will admit that the beans with a pita is weird, so i just ate those by themselves.
Not the best i've ever had but it was fairly cheap and the size was pretty generous, the guys working there were also very nice.
my friend got a chicago style dog with fries, and her fries were really good!
I feel compelled to write a review of this place as my husband now seems to dine here at least twice a week. Â He gets the gyros and fries 99% of the time and in his opinion both are stellar.
I have had a few different things. Â I really like the grilled chicken pita. Â The chicken is flavorful and tender, the pita is warm and soft and the tzatziki sauce is zingy, although I sometimes have needed to add a bit of salt. Â Last time I went, I changed it up and my mom and I split a greek salad and I had the falafel wrap. Â The greek salad was wonderful. Â I don't care for greek salads that are overwhelmed by huge chunks of feta, this salad had small pieces of it. Â They olives were pitted, which I appreciated! Â All of the ingredients were fresh and the dressing was stellar. Â I like that the greek salad comes with a warm pita. Â The falafel wrap was interesting- they put rice and beans in it- but it was very tasty. Â I had to bring most of it home as I was so full from the greek salad. Â My mom had the souvlaki (pork kebab) pita and liked it. Â The pork was seasoned very well and was very tender. Â I would order that myself.
I have read some negative reviews of the service here, but keep in mind this is not a sit down restaurant. Â You order at the counter, pick up your food and sit at a table. Â It has never been too busy when I've come in (even on the weekends) and I've never felt like they were slow or got anything wrong.
I stopped here late last night after a long night at the bars. I needed some food badly and I ordered the Italian Beef sandwich. It was not good and way to salty. The fries were okay and the cheese dipping sauce that I got with my fries was absolutely disgusting. It looked like something that was created in a nuclear power plant. My girlfriend got a salad and thought it was good, but I was definitely disappointed and will not be eating here again.
Review Source:I ended up here on a Saturday night around 3 am. The place itself is pretty appealing for a late night drunk spot: it's big, it's clean, and ordering wasn't a total clustereff. I ordered the #4 combo: a gyro, fries, and a drink. "$9.10," said the old Greek guy behind the counter. I paid and he asked if I wanted a receipt, and I said no. Then I used their restroom and came back to claim my food. The guy making the food handed my gyro to me, and the old Greek guy said to me once again, "$9.10." I told him politely that I had already paid and he insisted that I didn't, and obviously didn't since I didn't have a receipt. We went back and forth for a little while and then he fanned through the receipts in the register and shooed me away and told me to take my food. He obviously found proof that someone had just paid $9.10 (ME). Of course, he didn't apologize for his rudeness or forgetfulness... instead, he acted like he was doing me some favor and giving me free food. Stupid twat. Gyro was average, fries were definitely frozen. Never going here again because the guy that runs the place can't even remember his customers 2 minutes later.
Review Source:Another (very difficult) attempt at brevity and minimal use of parentheses: Comparisons to Chipotle are accurate in terms of concept and efficiency; in my opinion, the quality is even greater. I've never had an issue with service, and my god, my gyros wrap is always divine (and roughly $6). This is an easy pick for low-priced, generous helpings of pita-wrapped goodness.
Review Source:I used to LOVE this restaurant, I called it a "Greek Chipotle". I allowed myself one meal purchased rather than made at home per week and I ended up going here every week for several weeks in a row! I used to get the chicken greek salad, and I loved the dressing, the tzatziki sauce and the shaved chicken. The employees were great and one man, who I believe must be one of the owners, had my order memorized and were so kind. They have, however, recently changed their menu to cater to more people. They now only make a grilled chicken breast for the salad and changed the dressing, and it's just not as great anymore. I believe many of their other menu items weren't quite as affected but I won't be going back anymore. The chicken was my favorite part!
Review Source:Downgrade! Â
Witness:
Service is less than swift - both physically and mentally. Â There were a couple "duh" moments during the ordering but nothing major (guy prepped a white tortilla when I asked for wheat; neglected to give chips with eggplant spread and then had to ask if I even wanted them). Â Just enough to gum up the production line. Â Â Â
The wrap I got (chicken with lettuce and tzatziki) was really good, though it was the size of a newborn human, or at least newborn bear cub. Â A little unwieldy for my delicate lady-hands but I persevered. Â
Â
The aforementioned eggplant spread, though?  Fail.  I assumed "eggplant spread" was on the menu because they underestimated the average white bread Lincoln Parkite's knowledge of baba ghanouj.  It's fair to underestimate the average white bread Lincoln Parkite, so no points deducted there.  But it really is not - NOT - baba ghanouj.  It is - IS - a  cup of chunky eggplant and garlic (whoa, garlic) that does not do anything for me.  It's possible the garlic in my system has kept vampires at bay since then, but we'll never really know. Â
Â
Finally, because I have to say it even if you throw tomatoes at me, the typos on the menu are pretty bad. Â To quote whoever it was that first said it, "Bad grammar makes me [sic]." Â I can't enter into an honest, open, loving relationship while those errors ("breats" for "breast"; "cole, slaw," etc.) persist. Â
There's hope, and plenty of good stuff to build on. Â Fingers crossed that they do.
Hmm, this place seems to have taken a step backwards. Â The service today was a far cry from the cheerful efficiency that characterized our first visit. Â And even more disappointingly, they served me one of the worst falafel wraps of all time. Â The falafel itself was cold, clumpy, and bland, and the fixings were less than fresh. Â Furthermore, there was an odd, unpleasant butter or oil taste to the wrapper. Â All in all, it was barely edible.
However, I have to say that the chicken was as tender and tasty as ever, and for some inexplicable reason, I found their fries to be irresistible. Â
And they serve Heinz ketchup and Coke Zero.
At this point I would call them a decent neighborhood option, but no longer a destination.
Awesome Greek food in a Chipotle-style restaurant. I get a HUGE salad for about $8; incredible value.
fresh cut fries  eggplant spread  lemon soup  chipotle  cucumbers
The pork gyro was really good. Â I asked for it well done and it came out perfect. Â
Bottom line: Â Very good fast food and great value.
It's like a Greek Arby's! Well, no it's not. But, I wanted to change up the Chipotle chorus. Surely there was a fast food giant who utilized the 'Chipotle business model/assembly line' before Chipotle. Maybe it was Subway? Something else? Where did The Flintstones go? Why do I always get sidetracked in these things? I don't know why I usually do but in this case, I can tell you: it was boring. I was bored. I kept wanting it to get better and it just didn't. This might have been some of the blandest Greek food I've ever had. The guys working there were nice enough, the portions were big and the prices weren't cray but there was little (actually, nothing) about TG that would make me rush back to enjoy its delicacies.
At the time I went (later on a Thursday), they were almost out of lamb, so I 'opted' for chicken. Typically, I'm not one to get my panties in a bunch about not eating a lamb gyro (those reviews are coming) but the pita wrap reminded me more of a tortilla than a thick, pillowy bread pocket. I loaded my chicken sandwich up with hummus, onions, tomatoes, diced cucumber, feta, taztziki sauce, and hot sauce. Sounds good, right? Right. Of course it does. I am a master at flavor pairings. It's on wikipedia. This. This was alright. Not even the hot sauce had any pop to it. The cheese was mushy and the meat had no discernable flavor. I know chicken is meant to be a blank state but it's possible to season it. I promise you. A decent enough meal at 9 on a Thursday night but nothing that you'll remember the day after. Culinary white noise?
I loved the food here - fast and fresh Greek food, generous portions, very affordable. I stopped in for lunch, had a platter with a heaping amount of gyro meat (whatever that is called), fresh lettuce and tomatoes on a bed of tasty rice, a few olives tossed in and yummy tzatziki sauce. It was fantastic and just the right amount of food for lunch. I wish we had something like this in my home town!
Review Source:I'll be honest with you. If the food is tasty enough, I don't care about its level of authenticity. I just don't. I don't avoid Taco Bell because it's not authentic Mexican food, I avoid Taco Bell because every time I've eaten there, I've felt like I was going to die within an hour. All I really ask is that my food not be disgusting and not make me sick. The gyro I ordered at Tzatziki met my criteria, and it was pretty large so by the time I felt full, I still had plenty left for later. Always a plus.
Review Source:Tzatziki Grill is where you go when you want a lot of food for a cheap price. Â Portions are huge compared to other Mediterranean restaurants, and prices are low, so it's a great deal. Â I find the actual food mediocre though. Â And I don't like the Tzatziki sauce that much. Â I prefer Sultan's Market just a block up the street.
Review Source:Greek 'chipotle'
I live around the corner from this place n I got to eat here last night. The concept isn't unfamiliar. You hv a choice of getting a wrap, bowl or a salad with choices that include rice, beans, lettuce, olives, cucumbers, tomato, cole slaw, dolma, feta, couple'a other cheeses, hummus, tzatziki and hot sauces. The combo sounds yum right?? It is!! The falafels are steamed n yet taste good. It wasn't very crowded when we were there, hope this place does good business!!
They've been open for five months and I finally made it here even though I live two blocks away and have been meaning to go since they opened.
I had the lamb and beef platter which is gyros meat cut off the spit with a salad, pita bread, tzatziki and baked beans (I don't think Greek when I think baked beans but they were okay). I made myself a nice gyros sandwich and still had some meat to eat with the salad and beans. The salad came topped with a good amount of feta cheese and the platter filled me up.
The workers were very friendly and they have a decent amount of seating including stools by the window so that you can watch people walk by as you eat.
Do I want lamb on my Greek salad? Well, yes. Yes I do! And a side of tzatziki sauce? Yes, please. Sweet heavenly deliciousness! I love this place!
I came here for lunch yesterday and I had enough salad for today's lunch as well.
The service is friendly and quick. There are seats-a-plenty if you choose to dine in.
BTW, I agree with the other reviewers. When I first walked in i wondered, "What is this? A Greek Chipotle?" and then I said "Yay!"
Unfortunately, Tzatziki Grill was a big bust for me.
The first thing my husband said to me when we left was that it reminded him of Chipotle (which seems to be a common consensus), only with Greek food. To a non-Chipotle eater, this is not a deal breaker, but it might be for some.
I ordered a chicken pita because it's normally pretty healthy (minus the pita). My first bummer was the fact that it was a tortilla, not a pita (there *is* a difference). Minus 1 point.
Now, don't get me wrong. The chicken was really good. However, the tortilla barely had any flavor and was really hard to chew. I threw it away and made it into a salad (adding my own dressing). It was pretty good that way, until I bit into a bone. That, I really didn't appreciate. Of course I wasn't expecting it, so not only was it a very unpleasant surprise, I was really afraid I'd done damage to my tooth. Thank goodness it was okay.
Minus 3 points
I also ordered egg lemon soup, which I normally love, and it was super watery, with barely any rice. I didn't even like the oyster crackers, and I LOVE oyster crackers.
Minus 2 points
My overall rating is a 4/10. Not even 50%. Bummer. I really wanted to like Tzatziki, but it just fell hard. Not really sure it's worth a second visit or not. Maybe if I can get over the worry that I'd broken my tooth, but then of course there's the worry I'd get a bone again, and well, no thanks.
I truly enjoy this restaurant. What I don't enjoy are about 1/2 of the reviews on Yelp. I've been to this place 5 or 6 times (can't remember, srsly) and so many of the reviews are utter garbage.
People bitching that they put guacamole on their wrap that already has tzatziki!? How is that a negative toward the restaurant? You're the idiot for choosing that. My favorite is when I read that people are angry that this place doesn't serve "authentic Greek cuisine". If you want your moussaka or baklava, go look for the other 1,323 Greek places in town. There are too many Greek restaurants that have that approach; most of them being subpar. TG does what it does, and does it well. It does not pretend to be anything other than it is.
What WOULD piss me off is if they offered terrible versions of traditional Greek food. (Note: Gyro is traditional, at least according to Wikipedia, and I truly enjoy their gyro wrap here)
The food is fast, fresh, tasty, cheap, and comes in abundance. Seriously, what more could you ask for? Wait wait, I know you'll write a review telling me, filled with your sense of entitlement.
Yes, I'm aware that it's evident that I have a huge rager for TG. I don't care. I love it!
People say "Greek Chipotle" like it's a bad thing! This has got to be one of the best deals for lunch. For $6, you can get a huge bowl filled with shwarma meats, fresh vegetables, couscous, hummus, grape leaves, etc. etc. mmm mmm.
Three important things distinguish Tzatziki from the Chipotle business model:
1. They cook everything in olive oil (healthier!)
2. The prices are better, and the quantity is larger
3. They don't charge extra for anything that I'm aware of -- not even grape leaves! -- whereas Chipotle packs on the $$ for guacamole and chips.
This has probably been used before, but...
Greek Chipotle!
Pretty much all you need to know. Â A few choices of meats (all warming on a spit), and ton's of rice, beans, veggies to choose from. Â Everything tastes very fresh, and the portions are quite generous. Â If you like garlic (and you don't mind smelling of garlic for a 24-hour period), try the eggplant dip. Â Delicious, but it sticks with you.
Staff could be nicer - I think it's the owner who's the rude one. Â I've heard of two occasions where people have been charged for something they though was being thrown in for free.
Either way, good and fresh food at a very reasonable price.
When I first went here, I didn't understand the concept of the restaurant. Â (Should've read yelp beforehand). Â Anyways, the menu boards don't provide a lot of information so I recommend asking about the different options first.
Like others have said, it has a concept similar to Chipotle. Â I agree with other reviews that the food here tastes fresher and you can taste the difference between Chipotle and this place. Â The atmosphere was kind of dry. Â However service was good. Â I think it's a family business.
First off, the pita wrap I got last night was delicious and I will be a repeat customer. My normally extremely picky wife nearly ate the whole thing when all she initially wanted was a bite.
I guess I'm just at a loss as to why the Chipotle concept is a detriment to this place. Â Your meal is put together right in front of you, you can get exactly what you want on it (with no mistakes or skimping), and you can see how all of the ingredients look (very fresh here btw).
Don't hate on this place because they took an extremely succesful idea and put their own spin on it. Â Try the food for what it is, and what it is is delicious.
This review may be premature but oh well... I like this place, the atmosphere is nice, friendly, and trendy and the menu, though slim pickings has a lot of different combinations when it comes to the toppings you can add to the wraps and bowls. Â I had a beef and lamb bowl which is basically the wrap without the pita and it was delicious, filling, and most importantly cheap! Â
Alert: this is not like a place you are going to eat at around Greektown!
What other people have said about this place being like a Mediterranean Chipotle would be accurate and I think Nesh is the same way too but it's a good value for your buck! Â If you're in the area and looking for something to eat I'd say check it out, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there.
Tzatziki Grill deserves more credit than its been getting. Yes, it is a Mediterranean Chipotle. BUT: when you judge it by those criteria, TG really excels.
1. Cheaper than Chipotle: the wraps and bowls are under $6.
2. Fresher: this speaks for itself.
3. Healthier: they use olive oil, whereas Chipotle cooks almost everything in cheap soybean or industrial seed oil.
4. Better accompaniments: for no extra charge the bowls and wraps can include grape leaves, hummus, eggplant spread, olives, feta cheese, Greek yogurt sauce, etc.
5. More food: I've been twice, and both times the bowls contained more food than I should have eaten.
You'll be hard pressed to do better for $6 in Lincoln Park.
I love this place!!! I do not think its like chipotle at all. what does that even mean?  Its delish, fresh and cheap.  I hate how critical people can be about really dumb things, and then when all the little privately owned  places go out of business, you complain because you dont want chain restaurants.
I loved my salad. it was bomb, and ill be back for it again soon.
A lot of people are calling this place a Greek Chipotle. Â I guess I can see the similarities (e.g. generally friendly service at both places, both have decent sauces/salsas), but allow me to point out some differences.
For starters, Chipotle has burritos (with rice and beans) and burrito bowls (with rice and beans). Â TG has wraps (with rice and beans) and bowls - NOT WRAP BOWLS - but just bowls (with rice and beans).
At Chipotle, you don't need to be 6 feet tall to see over the sneeze guard and make direct, personal eye contact with the person preparing your meal. Â At TG, between the glaring reflection from the outside bouncing off their food protectors and my 5'7" stature, I could barely see whom I was talking to. Â The glass made me wonder if it was the food they were protecting, or themselves. Â Chipotle doesn't need a prison visitation phone system installed. Â TG would benefit from such an addition.
Also, at Chipotle the meat has flavor. Â Sort of. Â TG's lamb was the dryest, grossest shaved meat I've eaten. Â Even with the addition of rice and beans.
Chipotle makes guacamole. Â TG doesn't because they're a Greek joint and they stick to what they're goo...wait....oh, wait...they do have guacamole. Â And it's gross. Â "Creamy" is generally not a term I care to use to describe guacamole, so I'll use it and not care. Â
Jokes aside, I'll keep my eye on this place (via yelp) over the next few months because I really wanted it to be good. Â But in the end, Sultan's market is a cheaper, tastier, half block north.
There is a sign on the window that says "best food money can buy." That pretty much sums it up. Fresh, delicious, massive, and cheap. Tzatziki is by far and away my favorite place for a quick, satisfying meal.
TG opened up around the corner from me the week I moved in and I have eaten there multiple times every week since. Their portions are huge and, although they have a ton of different options (about every topping you could think of) I always find myself ordering the lamb and beef wrap.
What's best is that it's so cheap! Also, the staff is always incredibly friendly and welcoming.
Oh, and get the eggplant spread. It's killer.
Sigh, another review for chipotle...
I mean...
Tzatziki grill!
Tzatziki grill is exactly like chipotle but with mediterranean ingredients. Â I totally didn't realize this place was greek. Â I thought it was general mediterranean like pita inn. Â My friend was upset that they didn't have falafel (btw, they DON'T have falafel). Â
So you can get a wrap (burrito), a bowl (burrito bowl), or ...something else maybe. Â The wrap has pita and then a meat (lamb, beef, or chicken), and various toppings like veggies, grape leaves, etc. Â They also have hummus, guacamole (??), and yogurt sauce. Â They have regular cheese lke cheddar and mozzerella and also feta. Â Anyway, much like chipotle, it is fun to make your own creation.
The taste? Â Hmm, the chicken was a little tough. Â Also, my pita was a little tough. It wasn't soft and doughy as they sometimes are. Â Other than that, it was fresh food and veggies and overall pretty tasty.
Cool concept though! Â Next up-- Chipotle version of peking duck and mantou. Â DO IT!
This place just opened across the street from where I work and my co-workers and I couldn't be happier! Â
It's super delicious fresh Greek food, served in a Chipotle-like way, except their chicken is much tastier and less creepy than Chipotles. Â I'm really picky, so I love that I can choose whatever I want on my wrap/salad! Â And it's not that expensive! Â And it's really cute in there! Â You should go!!
