Velo, best food I've ever ate! This includes some of the best restaurants in the country as far as my eating experience.

Food itself- We ordered Butternut Squash and Brie Pizzette, macaroni & cheese, Steak Frites, brownie Sundae.  All of which were great, but the stars were the mac & Cheese (Truffles inside) and perfectly cooked steak frites.  We also ordered cocktails- basil lemon cooler and sangria, both were perfect for the heat wave and made with top ingredients.

Ambiance-  Quite pretty inside, a bit loud, despite the high end food, not pretentious.  Tends to have an older crowd compared to the other restaurants.  Get in before 6:45 to get a seat, it fills up quickly.

For 1 shared appetizer, 2 more expensive entrees, dessert, 4 cocktails and 2 esspresso we spent about $150.  The cost was definitely worth it, good place for a celebration or a special night out.

I went there last night with my boyfriend. We live locally and I had never heard of this place until I started searching some cool / swanky places to eat at, in and around Nyack. I came on Yelp to read the reviews and every single one was positive so I knew it had to be a good place.

    It was AMAZING.

    I absolutely loved it.
I had the Chianti Risotto and it was delicious. Nothing like anything I have had before. I can't even describe the taste.
My boyfriend had the off-the-menu t-bone steak. The waiter said the chef makes it sometimes and that he should try it. I had a taste and it was by far one of the juiciest cuts of meat I have ever had.

I had a super fruity margarita and some prosecco too. (Which were great) He had a jack & ginger and a "Singapore Sling" that was reccomended by the waiter. Needless to say it was similar to a long island iced tea. All the drinks were delish. And strong!

I highly reccomend this place for anyone who won't mind spending an extra buck. It is pricey.

Velo is excellent.  Service is lighthearted and attentive.  Ambiance is cozy without being cramped (including sidewalk seating in the warm weather.) Wine list is impressive and affordable. Food is excellent and reasonably priced.

    Here was our order:
    Two glasses of prosecco
    Fried oyster appetizer special
    Goat cheese tart appetizer
    Rabbit pasta entree
    Soft shell crabs entree special
Bottle of red (I cannot, for the life of me, remember what it was)
    Brownie sundae dessert to go

Our bill was under $150.  If we ate and drank like normal humans, it probably would have been under $100.  A steal if you ask me.  Everything was great.
Velo's food is less "precious" than their neighbor, 8 North Broadway, but it lived up to expectations, for sure.  They are, by far, now my favorite place for Italian cuisine in Nyack.

    Go.

In my opinion... Velo is the most consistent and dependable fine food restaurant in Nyack.  I've been eating here for 4 years now and I'm always happy walking out of here.  From the friendly service, dark and comfy ambiance all the way to its always unique and changing menu, Velo delivers! Always!  The mac and cheese here is probably the best I've ever had.  Cool owner.  Cool staff.

I give Velo 5 stars because of sheer consistency, dependability and perseverance!
I love this place!  Great wine list.  They'll let you try some too!  You just feel at home when you come here.  I never feel uncomfortable or too tight.  The atmosphere is relaxed and soothing!

We have been wanting to go here ever since I heard about the Mac & Cheese with black truffle. We went last night and were so happy with the food, the service... Everything! We had a table very close to the bar, and since the bar was crowded that meant people were literally right next to us.  They eventually moved, but at first I was put off. That was not the case for the rest of the night. Our server, Marcello, was excellent. When I couldn't decide between 2 pasta entrees he suggested I get appetizer sizes of each for dinner. He is a genius. I really wanted the Mac & cheese but since that's a menu staple I didn't get it. I ordered the chianti risotto with black truffle and the cavatelli with something and something else. No, I can't remember what was in it because compared to the chianti risotto all other food should be ashamed. The risotto was amazing. I want more. Like now. I stared the night with the cauliflower soufflé. My husband, who doesn't like cauliflower, even liked it! He had the steak for dinner and was thrilled.  I forgot what his appetizer was because the soufflé was just that good it erased all other menus items from my brain. Until the risotto. Then that became the best thing ever made.
We can't wait to go back. It was really fantastic.

Quite possibly one of my favorite restaurants in Nyack. This place has a homey feel - the servers are all courteous, personable and make you feel like you're at a much more expensive restaurant then you are at - this place has it all right. The food is stellar, bar tenders are grade-A, service is impeccable and it's a place I keep wanting to go back to. The food they do, they do it right. Go here for a romanic night, a special occasion, or a Friday night where you just want to treat yourself.

Oh, the desserts are house-made (like the pasta) and they are amazing.

    Birthday dinner.

Three of us began with the cauliflower sformato (Frisee, Pecorino Romano, Beet and Truffle Vinaigrette).  Next time I am starting out with this appetizer and  am not sharing!

Wife's appetizer was the goat cheese salad (Mixed Greens, Cucumber, Charred Tomato Vinaigrette/add Warm Herbed Goat Cheese).

Tron started with the goat cheese tartlet (Caramelized Onions, Thyme, White Wine Honey Syrup)

My main was the steamed mussels (Peppers and Scallions, Walnut-Pesto White Wine Broth, Grilled Crostini)  We were all dipping the bread and grilled crostini in my broth at the end.

Wife's main was the ever perfect, and current favorite dish, wild king salmon (served over a potato pancake atop spaghetti squash.)

Tron had the short ribs. I know they were over whipped potatoes.  I saw the dish served and next time I looked all I saw was a perfectly bread wiped clean plate!

My main was the halibut special (white anchovies, whipped potatoes or maybe polenta, with veggie and apple ratatouille)  Damn good.

Tron's dessert was a ricotta cheesecake with blood orange coulis and something else...lol.

My dessert was a special tart filled with apple and rhubarb along with port whipped cream.  That was not a typo..port whipped cream.  Friggin' genius.

You simply cannot go wrong, each time I visit this place I try something new. I have been 5 times and each time it is ...perfect! I even tried rabbit (yikes) and that was good too! Marcello can recommend the perfect wine for each meal. I love the Skirt steak, the ragu and even the cappuccino is done perfectly. The wait staff is very knowledgeable and extremely friendly. I highly recommend this restaurant, you will enjoy it.

I've only been to Velo once and expect to return. Once you walk through the front door you feel like you are in a fancy NYC restaurant. The intimate setting paired with their magnificent wine selections is perfect for a date night. Their menu is sure to please with great options to choose from. Service was good. The only drawback was our waiter for the night, he was a little too talkative. Other than that my experience was a pleasant one and look forward to going back.

a local gem. been to velo 3 times now with friends and everyone has consistently had a great meal. only complaint is how noisy the place is.....if you're seeking to have conversation, consider requesting a table outside on broadway. nyack has several really good restaurants but velo is the best.

I've been going to Velo since it opened back in 2008 but I'm a bit of Yelp slacker so I've never reviewed it. But lately, I've been writing more reviews because I rely on Yelp so much that I feel I need to "give back". Ok so on to the review...
BDK and I went for dinner this past Saturday. Showed up around 8ish without a reservation and got a table right away.
As it was Kentucky Derby Day, they had a mint julep special and seeing as I can't resist anything with bourbon, I indulged an I'm glad I did. It was very smooth and made with strawberries (I think) and a very smooth brand of bourbon whose names escapes me. BDK was abstaining for the evening but he couldn't help but steal a few sips.
    Appetizer:
We decides to share the truffle mac-n-cheese and it was an excellent choice. It was served in a small, sizzling cast iron skillet with a gold crust of panko breadcrumbs on top. We were a little surprised to find fettuccine instead of a more traditional pasta shape but we overlooked this because it was so effing delicious. My one criticism is that because it was so hot and because of the chosen pasta shape, the dish was very soupy. I think elbows or some shorter tubular pasta would have held the sauce better.
BDK and I both observed that the dish would have been way too rich as an entree for one person. We also agreed that had we been in the privacy of our own home we would have literally licked the skillet clean...burned tongues be damned!!
    Entrees:
This was BDK's first time and so I recommended he try the gnocchi with lamb ragu. It's one of my favorites and once again, it did not disappoint. The gnocchi was light and fluffy as usual and the sauce was rich and flavorful.
I had the coffee rubbed pork tenderloin and Oh. My. God. This dish was exceptional! Although he enjoyed his gnocchi, BDK felt the pork overshadowed his enjoyment because it was just THAT GOOD!
The pork was cooked perfectly: very tender and with the slightest hint of pink. But the star was the coffee rub. I was concerned that it would overpower a delicate flavored meat but it was perfect.
The rub was full of complex flavors and when you first bit into it you tasted coffee but as you chewed, other flavors developed and it was just amazing. I would interrogate Chef Anthony just to learn what was in that rub!
It was served with some very thin asparagus and delicious polenta fries with a three cheese sauce drizzled over it all. The dish was a knockout!

    Dessert:
And this is where it went horribly wrong. We went for the S'more cheesecake with marshmallow topping. The topping was good but the cheesecake was one of the most unpleasant experiences I've ever had. The texture was dense in a weird crumbly way and the taste was very bad. It's almost as if they used some sort of custard technique and it curdled because it tasted very egg-y and like nasty scrambled eggs.
HOWEVER, this poor dessert did not mar our experience.

We told our waiter about our disappointment with the dessert and he took $2 off. I wasn't expecting this and only gave them feedback so they could improve not as a means of getting money off, so that was a nice surprise. I also got one of my juleps on the house because a new server gave my drink to someone else by mistake and so I had to wait longer. For the record, they did this on their own!

We ate at Velo's to celebrate Mother's Day.   The food was excellent.  I had the Monkfish special and my husband and mother in law had the Rib Eye special.

The service was very good.  My husband was unsure of which wine he wanted so the waiter brought him 2 samples to try.

    We would definitely go back.

The river towns of Tarrytown and Nyack have been frequent stops 4 us as we drive to/from MidAtlantic to CT. Lots of good eating around there. Velo ranks among the best. Walked in and grabbed seats at the bar and put ourselves in their hands. Excellent cauliflower sfogato, very nicely prepared gnocchi in lamb ragu, Boston lettuce salad and Arctic chat with ratatouille.  Nice and very reasonably priced wines by glass or bottle. Friendly and knowledgeable bartender. Cute if noisy room. Not much sidewalk space (two crammed-in tables) so if dining outdoors is important try other local options.

Fantastic place! Went there on a date, and it was perfect. (Although I have to admit, it wasn't overly busy at the time.) The menu was creative, and the food was delicious and cooked perfectly. My only complaint is that the portion size of my meal was a little on the small side. But in fairness, I have a big appetite. The waiter suggested a great pinot noir that went perfectly with both meals. I can see how it could get a little too intensely intimate as the place fills up; but it's definitely on a very short list of the best places in Nyack for a romantic date.

It was Valentine's Day, and being new the area we wanted to something delicious,  local and romantic....... we found it!!

They were serving specials along with the regular menu, everything sounded so good it was hard to select.
Our entrees were interesting and just fabulous.  I had the coffee coated pork loin with roasted red peppers an polenta fries.... Delish.  My guy had the broiled scallops with quinoa and seaweed greens with a light coconut sauce.... also Delish.

We split the pear/walnut salad for an appetizer, which seemed a bit small, and the lettuce a tad wilted.

The staff was helpful attentive and polite.  Our waiter was a bit too much of a jokester, but his heart was in the right place.  The ambience was definitely cozy, and they even handed out long stem roses to the ladies.

Needless to say we will definitely return.

Great wine list, nothing too fancy but the best thing is nothing is way over priced.  Wait staff is very informed and let's you sit back and enjoy your meal.  For a quaint place like Velo is I thought they'd rush us out to flip the tables but were very kind and courteous in letting us hang out and continue our evening.  Gets a little loud but the food is great.  Recommended for a nice date or a night out to relax.

Velo has been on our list for a while, and we picked last night to go.  As it turned out, we picked probably the worst day of the entire year to head to Nyack...they were having a huge Halloween street fair, and most of downtown was blocked off.  And Velo is downtown.  So our night started with me calling Velo on my cell as the Southern husband navigated the car around little Spidermen and butterflies and fairy princesses.  The hostess was completely lovely, telling us to get here when we could and not to worry about making our 6pm reservation.  When we finally got there, 30 minutes late, they couldn't have been nicer, and escorted us to a lovely little table for two.  Velo is a bistro and wine bar and has that dark, romantic, slightly noisy bistro feel, which I love.  As you might expect, they have a large selection of wines, most by the bottle.  They had a lovely Malbec by the glass and that's what I went for.  Our waiter Marcello was just the right amount of attentive and friendly, and we started right in on the fresh baked rustic bread dunked in sundried tomato basil olive oil.  I went on to have the fried oyster salad, which was served in an adorable wooden box over frisee lettuce with a couple of dipping sauces on the side.  I followed it with the grilled margarita pizza, which comes with a generous amount of fresh mozzarella melted on top, fresh chopped basil, and a sweet tomato sauce that was out of this world.  The Southern husband had seared scallops arranged around a quinoa salad, and the whole thing was sitting in a Thai coconut sauce.  He was one happy camper.  By the end of the meal we were, sadly, too full for the inventive looking dessert menu which included things like cheesecake s'mores and cardamom doughnuts with lemon pudding.  The place was PACKED...make sure you do make a reservation...but make one and go.  We'll definitely go back...just not on the Nyack Halloween festival weekend.  :)

Visited last Saturday evening at 6 PM.  The menu is slightly expanded since our visit about six months with a greater variety of items throughout.

The fried oyster appetizer was outstanding and we could have made a meal of just oysters.  Too bad they can't deliver.  The lamb T-bone and the pork shank were beautifully prepared.

We found the wait staff friendly, attentive and knowledgeable, without being overbearing.  The food items were delivered at a nice satisfying pace.  We felt very comfortable throughout.

Very important for us was the fact the ubiquitous Jalapeno did not make an unexpected or unwarranted appearance.  Too often chefs camouflage their inability to prepare tasty foods by adding the pepper to dull the senses of the patron. As a matter of fact, all the items for our table were tasty without being overpowering or cloying of extraneous spices and tastes.

Definitely a place to visit again and again.  And it has a nice quint ambiance that suits a wide variety of visitors.

With the myriad number of restaurants available to us, we have a rule:  "Never revisit a restaurant that misses the mark in food or service, as there many others that try harder and deliver better for our business."

Yes, recommending to friends and relatives and to all readers.

Yup, all make it worthwhile for a visit.

This place was very loud. It was hard to hear what the waiter was saying during our experience. The restaurant is small and not good for a crowd with more than 4 people. This is not a place to take a date if you want to have an intimate experience either. As for the wine bar, the selection was limited. My suggestion is to take the sauvignon blanc off the wine list; it tasted cheap and sour. There are many more notable SB's out there and I'm surprised they choose this one. We appreciate the fact that we were able to taste and reject it as well.

As for the food, it came out really slow. Maybe I'm use to dining in nyc.

The portions were a hit and miss. The appetizers were actually a good portion to share all around. I suggest not to order the goat cheese tartlet since we thought it tasted more like ricotta and lacked the carmelized onions that was written on the menu. I enjoyed the meatballs and fried oysters the most.

As for the entrees, we order a selection of meats and fish. The seared tuna was really good but the portion was so small compared to the other entrees. The veal chop was gigantic but came out a bit rare when it was asked for medium. The special of the monk fish was ok but not my favorite. I thought it was under seasoned and chewy. The filet mignon was very good with the bacon and blue cheese roulade.

This place is probably one of the better restaurants in the area for the locals if you want the city experience but I would not call myself a wine bar and have a limited listing of wines. If anything, you should have at least 3 wines per genre for customers to choose from and not the owners top favorite.

Small French bistros are delightful. Velo is special. The staff is trained to treat you like an important guest and they have the wherewithal to pull it off. Service is impeccable, servers are knowledgeable and the food is memorable. We each raved about our appetizers and entrees - and everyone had something different. The wine list is reasonable, the portions un-French like in their generous size and the decor is comfortable. The only negative is that when this small place is full, the noise level is higher than I would like. I guess I could expound about each dish, the flavors, presentation, taste, etc., but it's all good. Go and find out. Park at the bank in the evenings and take a walk up Main Street but don't go into any other restaurant, 'cause you don't want to pass up on this one.

This was the first spot for "nyack" night out. Velo offers a warm & cozy atmosphere, perfect for having a drink or grabbing a lite bite. We each enjoyed a glass of Chianti, which was 1 of the 2 featured wines. The menu looked tasty and included a variety of items. My gal pal has eaten here before and enjoyed the menu. This review is just for drinks. I would definitely go back.

Velo is one of the best options for an upscale meal in Nyack, with a great wine selection and an evolving menu that always has interesting options on it.  My wife and I have eaten there a number of times without a bad meal, and often with at least one dish that was transcendant -- usually the fish, because they seem to have interesting seafood options on the menu that are prepared beautifully. You also have to get the mac and cheese, even if you just get it as a shared appetizer, so long as you are not trying to, you know, lose weight.

The ambience is very quiet, dark, romantic without being overbearing.  It can be a little cramped, but even when it's busy we've found seats at the bar.  It has the best wine menu in Nyack, and can be a great place to stop for just some light bites and a great bottle. As a 17 year  Manhattan resident who has had some difficulty adapting to suburban restaurant options, Velo is one place that would be a great neighborhood wine bar and restaurant in any neighborhood in the city, and it's a transcendant option for Nyack.

I have been meaning to give this coveted 5-star review for a really long time.  Velo is a revelation.  It would do well in Village or Soho, it's that distinctively good and well-appointed from both culinary and interior design point perspectives.  This nouveau italian/locally sourced and avant garde bistro serves up the goods: on-point hospitality; inventive, delicious and fresh food; a wine list that makes me want to become a wine person; and sinful experiences like the white and black truffle mac n cheese with pesto bread crumbs - the handmade gnocchi with lamb ragu - the 4 cheese fonduata - the goat cheese tartlet.. alright, I'm so infatuated with this place that I'm just listing off the menu, which I'm rapidly tearing through with gusto.  I suggest you do the same.

Oh, and get the "bronx" grilled cheese with truffle oil.  Hand crafted on bread from an old school Arthur Avenue Italian bakery, gooey fontina cheese, and mind-melting truffle oil saturated throughout.  Not good, but GREAT.

Drinkers unite!  I went to Velo Bistro with my friend the other weekend, and I cannot wait to go back.  Everything from the food, to the service, to the drinks were absolutely top notch.  This place looks pretentious when you walk in, but it's really not at all.  All the swanky décor is merely to distract outsiders from the fact that this is the coolest place to kick back and drink in Nyack.

The drinks...where do I start with these amazing drinks...  They basically fill up your entire glass with alcohol, which could be a problem if you are no fun.  So if you don't like drinking, this isn't the place for you, but if you do like drinking, you are basically at one of the best spots you can go to in the NY/NJ area.

The food is also incredible.  I got mac and cheese when I went, and it was basically the best mac and cheese I have ever had in my life.  Go here if you are in the Nyack area.  You won't regret it.

Great storefront location on N Broadway in Nyack.  Does have a terrific wine list.  Food didn't quite measure up though.  At the late seating, they may not have everything (lamb shank) and the food is cooked to order so it is not rocket fast.

That said, the steak frites was excellent and the fries in the juice of the steak was quite interesting.  Less exciting was the boston salad.  The creme brulee for dessert redeemed.

Seems like you do better here if you come here often and you know the owners.

We love this restaurant. It has become our family's special occasion destination and my business partners love it too. The food is nothing less than spectacular and Chef Anthony is an original. We're not much in the way of foodies except by way of too much business travel; we've never had a bad recommendation here. We've also done a wine-tasting menu and a lovely weekend lunch  and neither have disappointed., My only reservation--slight though it is--is leave room for the desserts. They're pretty wonderful in their own way. Run, don't walk to this discovery.

Velo, simply put, is outstanding: Outstanding food, outstanding wine, outstanding service. I was able to sample four entrees on my last visit: short ribs, gnocchi, chianti risotto, and duck confit, and all exceeded my already high expectations (the chianti risotto was a particularly nice surprise). Our waiter was helpful and honest, giving his frank opinions on the dishes, wine, etc. Top the lovely dinner off with a walk to the river and you'll have a perfect evening.

Excellent food, service & decor. A great neighborhood eatery with sophistication, yet warm, personal service. The GM, Marcello, will personally ensure you have an  exceptional dining experience!

I recommend reservations for parties of 4 or more during peak periods (weekend dinner time). They have a beautiful, granite topped bar that offers food service when you can't wait for a table or looking for something more casual.

Not just a wine bar either, Velo carries a small collection of fine domestic & imported micro brews! The cuisine is ea uro/american mix. The menu selection is small, but they have all the major food groups; beef, chicken, fish & vegetarian...pastas too! Leave room for dessert, the freshly made doughnuts with creme anglaise & preserves make a perfect ending!

This is the restaurant I've been waiting to come to Nyack. Anthony (the chef) has an obvious passion for food, including the use of local, fresh ingredients. Anthony's wife is frequently the hostess and enthusiasm and pride of ownership in evident in both. The menu changes seasonally, as does the interesting wine list that includes a greater variety of wines by the glass than most (made possible by a wine delivery system that keeps air out of the bottles). My wife and I go frequently, often ordering at the bar in order to have conversation with other locals and the bartender and staff (who are all very friendly and interested in food and wine and in discussing the menu with diners).  Some favorite dishes include the goat cheese tartlet app, both of the two risottos (which periodically change) and the gnocchi (which melts in your mouth).

OK, whoever this George S. character is, I have a strong suspicion he is affiliated with the other restaurant he reviewed.  I don't see why you would give Velo anything less than 4 stars.  The food is delicious and flavorful, and the staff is very warm and friendly.

Although I only sampled the appetizers - tuna tartare and the other goat cheese app - they were absolutely amazing.  Can't wait to go back and eat of the dinner menu.

Since my fiancee works in the restaurant business and being a bit of a food snob (oh no offense - he knows it) we're always on the look out for new local restaurants to try that don't require us to schlep into the city or across the dreaded Tappan Zee Bridge on a weeknight.  Mission accomplished:  Velo Bistro in Nyack, NY

We have been to this restaurant twice during the week and I've been once on a weekend night with a girlfriend and we all loved it!  It's alway big if my fiancee and friends (who either currently work in higher end restaurants or have in the past, including myself) say they "just feel comfortable" in a restaurant where they don't know the hostess, chef, bartender and probably the busboy's nephew - you get my point.  Needless to say, we now do know the bartender, manager and most of the waitstaff but I digress...

This small but bustling restaurant probably has 10 freestanding tables (along with 2 or 3 outside during warm weather) and then banquettes along 1/2 the wall and a large booth rounding the corner.  I sat with a friend at a table at the front of the restaurant where there is a large glass window and the other two times I sat at the bar which holds maybe 6-8 people and had an equally good time.  The bartender and the waiters were all attentive without hovering and were able to make helpful suggestions with the food and wine knowledge to back it up!

What I really liked about this place is that they had a real variety of wines by the glass and half bottles and the bartender mentioned to me the last time I was there that the chef/owner may be adding a sort of tapas/wine tasting which I would so be down with!  There were 3 special wines by the glass for the evening written on a blackboard behind the bar in addition to the many others available on the menu and there is this funky almost tap-like looking wine preserver thing that has spouts on 6 or so bottles.

To be quite honest, I haven't even tried an entree there yet because the appetizers on the menu along with the bar food specials were so delicious who needed it!  Get the macaroni and cheese - go off the diet ladies just for a few bites!  The veal mini sliders topped with bleu cheese were a special on of the nights we were there and what a great spin on classic sliders but so much more refined.  The fried oysters were light, not at all greasy and came with 2 dipping sauces - one like a sweet chili and the other like an aioli.  There was a yummy fondue served with polenta sticks - certainly on the heavier side but it's a nice appetizer size for 2 to share if your having entrees.  The only thing I didn't love was the chicken salad napoleon - it was supposed to be a miso chicken but it just didn't have enough of the asian flavorings for me.  I can't report on dessert because I didn't have it any of the times I've been.

All in all, Velo (which I didn't know means bicycle in french but thanks to my french teacher friend I now do) is on my list of restaurants I would go back to again and again!
