This is a diner. It is not the Ritz Carlton. The food is tasty and the service is good.  I am a fan of the pancakes and all the choices they offer for breakfast which is a main staple of the American diner.

We visited this diner when it first opened and the food and service were pretty decent.  We always had one particular waiter who was Hispanic. Victor was terrific and the food ALWAYS came out as ordered and hot. Waiter always on top of game with filling water and soda glasses promptly and checked back frequently to see if anything was needed.  We then had this one older blondish waitress come to our table. Our meals came out wrong, never came back to see if the meal was OK or if a refill was needed. Just dropped of the check and that was it. We brushed it off to someone having a bad day.  The next several visits, we ended up getting this woman and the problem just continued. Well done fries came out cold and white, glasses never refilled.  A well done burger came out mooing rare..etc.  Finally, I asked her what her problem was with us (my mother in law was not there) and why our food has never come out correctly and her service just awful. We told her that our first several visits when we had Victor, we never had these issues.  Her response was that she was NOT Hispanic and all the kitchen help does not speak English and that is why her orders never come out correctly.  The other tables she attended to did not seem to have these problems.  Her comment was racist and we let the manager know.  Nothing was done and she is still there.  We decided to give it another try.  From bad to worse.  Decided to stop for breakfast.  Two omelets took over 20 minutes to arrive to our table.  They arrived cold and missing the peppers and onions we asked for our hash brown potatoes.  Toast was cold. Waiter takes the two plates back with the toast.  He brings them back.  They put greasy peppers and onions on top of the COLD potatoes and he just put the original toast back into the toaster as they were burned.  He put the burned side down so that it was not noticeable.  When we addressed this to him, he just stood there.  The owner was there (do not know his name but he apparently is a body builder).  I asked him to please come to our table when he was finished dealing with a customer at the cash register.  He was too good to come to our table, but sent the hostess to speak with us.  Bottom line.  Avoid this place like the plague.  Apparently, they do not care that they employ racists who let you know they are a racist, wait staff who are poorly trained and pretty deceptive and an owner who thinks he is better than the people who BUTTER HIS BREAD.

The friendliness of the staff unfortunately does not make up for the shoddiness of the food the kitchen puts out.   Most of what we ordered was under-seasoned and tasted as if it came straight out of a walk-in freezer.  My burger was completely bland, the fries were mushy and lukewarm, and Surly Boyfriend's toast on his similarly bland turkey sandwich was untoasted.  How do you not cook toast properly?

Our waitress was sweet, but spent way too much time sitting in various areas of the diner chatting with two other waitresses, which made requests for refills and extra napkins difficult as she was otherwise engaged.  She did check in to see how our food was, but this was at the point where we were nearly finished.

Normally I like to give a place at least two opportunities before I review it, but I think I got a good feel for the place after one visit and we won't be back. There are too many better diners in the area to try, or I can just stay home and under-cook my own burger and fries for much less cash.

The food is not great. The people are nice, but they also had a big deal fundraiser/endorsement event for the Republican Senatorial challenger with big fat Chris Christie showing up. Because of that I will never give them another dime of my money. Businesses should stay neutral, in my opinion. But this is America so if they choose to make their political affiliations public, they risk losing customers. And they have lost me. I urge anyone who is intelligent enough to realize how bad of a job the Republican party has done with this state and this country to not go there. The food is not worth it either.

I love a good diner & this is one of them.  Clean place and friendly staff.  Their is one waiter that we prefer not to be seated with bc he tends to make mistakes with our orders but other than that...no complaints!

Food is hit or miss.  Diner looks nice.  Bathrooms are hot.  Manny is a great server, genuinely wants his customers to have the best possible experience.  In contrast Karen (short blond hair, middle age) is the WORST.  Made us feel like we were putting her out from the get go.  Responded to information that our order came out wrong with "I'm sorry to hear that...I put the order in"  She took no responsibility for her error in serving it wrong.  It only got worse from there, culminating in her intruding in our private conversation with the manager when we were reporting the bad service to chime in "I told you that".  Anyway, without including all of the ugly details, our experience was terrible, management was unimpressive in their handling of it and Karen needs a new job, out of public service, she is clearly ill-equipt to handle this line of work.
Bus staff is exceptional and respectful and should be running the place!

Usually come here for breakfast... good food.  The few times I came for dinner I have gotten the salads that are large, fresh and delicious.  They are also well priced.  If you order for pick up from this place double check your order! I got a salad and it was missing the avocado and the dressing was a tiny to go packet!

And the waitstaff is superfriendly and attentive!

In its favor, West 22 has gone to great effort to be different than the dozen diners in easy driving distance.  Rather than chrome and glass, the decor resembles a budget reception hall.  Instead of a volume of available selections, the menu is limited to surprisingly few dinner entree choices.  Their waitstaff is extremely friendly, and seems to also be extremely forgetful and/or sloppy.  While breakfast fare is standard, and lunch sandwiches are hard to mess up, their poorly prepared dinners prompt the conclusion that the kitchen isn't particularly talented.  West 22 has been open for about 2 years, and each time that I drive by on Rt. 22 I expect to see the windows boarded.  In summary, one star is being generous; best avoided.

My pancakes were tough and burnt.  How do you mess up pancakes?

I'm not one to review diners but this one stood out on a recent visit - Stopped here for breakfast with my wife - didn't expect much but was surprised. As far as diners go everything was just great. Had a bowl of fruit - it couldn't have been fresher! (Even more impressive considering this was in February). Wife and I both had egg dishes - both dishes were very good. Coffee was solid and Patrice our waitress was very sweet and attentive. Not in this area often but next time will go out of our way to stop in here

Meh.  That about sums it up.  This used to be a Bennigan's.  After the chain went out of business this building spent months in renovation.  They ended up building a fairly nice looking diner.  The disappointing part is that the food doesn't live up to the promise.  I have been here 3 times for both breakfast and lunch.  Have had everything from soup to pancakes to eggs.  The service was decent but the food seemed to have been made without any love.  It actually reminded me of the food service stuff we use to get in the cafeteria at college - plastic-looking and tasting.

Great for a fast, simple, satisfying breakfast. I came across West 22 Diner because of its location (close to Newark airport) and was pleasantly surprised with my experience. Attentive service, strong coffee, perfectly cooked scrambled eggs (soft and creamy, but not watery), and the home fries! Definitely the best diner home fries I've had - thinly sliced and crunchy potatoes with a few onions. Yum!

NJ has the most diners of any state in america. and thats the best reason  NOT to eat at West 22. While the food here isn't terrible and the service is decent there are so many better diners within minutes. The two times ive come here i had a pastrami sandwich, which was dry and had no flavor and french toast which was stale. its pretty hard to screw up french toast. the west 22 diner does have the nicest interior of any dinner i've been to but that doesn't make up for the bad food.

This diner isn't that great really. It's fairly new and I've only eaten there maybe two or three times recently. The service is awkward to okay and the food is "meh". It isn't that great and the selection is surprisingly limited for a diner. The dessert is really unsavory. I'm big on dessert and has always been the part of the meal I would make a point to finish, but not here. The carrot cake is too spicy (not hot spicy, but overload of spices spicy) and kind of dry. The red velvet cake was a little better but not by much. It's somewhat far in distance from me and I don't think I'll go out of my way to come here anymore. I'd rather just go to Tropicana diner.. And I hate Tropicana diner :p

The menu is huge, which makes ordering difficult.  That type of complaint is for serious whiners, though :P They should make their menu less like applebee's is all i'm saying.

Full bar - drinks are good.  Food is a little more expensive than it should be, sadly.  If you want something hot and home-cooked looking, go to Tropicana - the chicken was average at best.  I wouldn't go back because i get better deals and daily specials at other diners.

It's a diner.  We went here after driving by the Echo Queen down the highway, which was empty at 6pm on a Friday.

Pretty sure they made me a fresh iced tea, which tasted good.  I had a veggie burger, which was a Dr. Praeger's patty, which are always so crumbly for me, so it was messy but tasty.  The wife had ravioli which were in a tasty sauce.  She got a pretty stock house salad.  The bread basket had a rosemary loaf which was good, and olive oil on the table for dipping.   The waiter was very friendly and was trying to make conversation, which I would have appreciated more if we weren't trying to get to a movie.

So competent, but not particularly inspired.

Have been eating here since it opened in early October,2009.  The food is always good, the service is great and the prices are very reasonable.

The menu consists of your standard Jersey diner selections - everything we've tried has always been terrific.

We live about 25 mins away and drive past no less than SEVEN other diners along our route to the West 22 diner.

They're doing something right - and I, personally, think the service is what sets them apart.

This building has been renovated, but the concept is old. It's an unimaginative, New Jersey diner, no different from ten other similar diners within a 5 mile radius.
There was a flat-screen TV on the wall tuned to the news, but the color was messed up, and the commentator's face was bright green. I hoped he was not a harbinger of the meal to come.
My wife and I had a la carte orders of french toast (2 small slices, $4.50) and pancakes (3 large. $4.50) with sides of breakfast sausage and crispy bacon ($2.00 per item). The french toast was limp and tasteless. No garnish on the plate, not even a dusting of powdered sugar. The pancakes were meh (The buckwheat pancakes at the Queen City DIner in Plainfield blow these away). Sausage was passable, but I'll eat anything with pork in it.
Available toppings consisted of pre-packaged butter pats, tiny plastic packets of Smuckers fruit preserves, and single-serve packets of Kraft artificial maple syrup. Pathetic.
I did order a side of decent fresh strawberries (about 1/2 cup, $2.00) to give my plate some life.
I glanced around at some of the other dishes being served. Everything had the same generic, institutional appearance, ersatz food.

I was watching the family of four sitting next to me, a couple with two young daughters. Each of them got glasses of orange juice, and proceeded to stir five or six teaspoons of granulated sugar into each glass of  juice. The parents helped the children with their sugar.
Mom and dad each ordered a large plate--three eggs, sausage, grilled hamburger patty, potatoes, and several orders of toast. The children had, as their breakfast, two large plates of french fries with ketchup, and strawberry preserves, which the father spoon fed from the little plastic packet directly into the younger child's mouth. Ugh.
