I came here on a Saturday evening with friends at around 7:30PM...it was not packed at all and we also made reservations so we were seated immediately..The portions are normally on the bigger side so it's recommended that you come here with a group of people or expect to bring home leftovers..unless you're coming to just have a few drinks with a friend..
Food:
Cheesy Corn (on the house appetizer--not sure if they always provide this..): tasted basically liked cheese + corn..the cheese is melted on the corn of course...and delicious if you like both cheese & corn.. :)
Dolsot Ultimate Kimchi Bokkeumbap ($22) - fried rice made with fermented spicy cabbage with additional charge depending on the option/type of fried rice you select..for the vegetarians, you can probably opt to have the fried rice w/out the meat/spam (but if you aren't a fan of kimchi..you shouldn't order this dish)..the ultimate kimchi bokkeumbap was delicious and the portion was huge as well..and it may be spicy for people who cannot handle spicy food.....they are generous with the amount of food they give you.. :)
*ultimate option provides you with spam, eggs, bacon, and cheese
Daktigem ($16) - popcorn chicken which comes with a side of Yeowoosai's house yellow sauce, jalapenos, and pickled radishes...you can opt to try the sweet & spicy popcorn chicken as well as the original (w/out the sauce); however, I would recommend just eating the original (w/out the sauce) because it is still tasty...the pickled radish tastes perfect w/ the chicken..the pickled radish has a sweet & vinegary taste to it and is usually provided w/ fried chicken if you go to Korea.. :0
Drinks: they have a beer list and korean fruit soju's if you enjoy those in pitchers..
Customer Service: the waiters were both friendly..no complaints
Atmosphere: dim lighting, sort of like a sports bar (t.v's are available to watch while eating)... many younger people come here to eat & drink with friends...
Parking: there's a small parking lot....it may be hard to find parking in the parking lot during busy hours because there are other vendors in the same strip mall..I'm sure there's street parking if if you can't find parking....
I would come here again if I was in the area or if I wanted a drink or two.. :)
We went there on a random Wednesday night. They have specials like half off fried chicken and cheap beer during the week. We got the popcorn chicken, the original Kimchi fried rice, and some seafood tofu soup. Be warned, they gave you A LOT of food. We took leftovers to go and it lasted both of us two lunches. The fried rice was good, but I wish they gave you more spam in it. Popcorn chicken was awesome, I think it's probably because they use dark meat of the chicken--the meat was not dry at all. Tender, and flavorful. The soup was one of the better ones I've had in Chicago, and again, they gave you A LOT. I almost felt embarrassed to have so much food left on the table--maybe our waiter could've told us about the portion size?
Review Source:Kimchi fried rice was legit!! We got the ultimate which included bacon, spam, egg, and cheese and couldn't stop eating even though I wasn't too hungry to begin with.
Popcorn chicken was good too but I wouldn't leave the place without trying their kimchi fried rice. The staff is friendly and they offer living social deals occasionally.
Yeowoosai is a good place for a group of friends consisting of picky eaters and of those seeking adventurous authentic cuisine. Â The menu features a variety of dishes ranging from a simple garlic fried rice to cow small intestine, and the new drink menu is amazing. The owner, Peter, is very sexy and well kept. The recent renovation has made the atmosphere in yeowoosai relaxed and classy. The music ranges from house to KPop and you can always catch Chicago sport team games on the tv. This place is good for dates, groups of friends, birthday parties and anyone flying solo for a night cap.
Review Source:Wow, I really loved this place and LOVED the food!
I just got back from an awesome dinner with two friends and the bf only minutes ago and already I find myself at the computer ready to gush about how great this place is!
Went with a groupon and took the recommendation of basically all the yelp reviews and ordered the Popcorn Chicken - this dish lives up to the hype, so good! Moist, tender, sweet, crunchy batter with awesome spicy mayo to dip, this was the table favorite.
We also ordered the bulgogi which was equally awesome - the beef had awesome flavor, wasn't tough or chewy, nothing to complain about. All of us were served our own bowl of rice and the entrees came with Korean accoutrements - small dishes of kimchi, pickled radish, onion, carrot, jalapeno (so good, so spicy) and some other undefined pickled yummy thing.
We ordered the crab rangoon for appetizer which I felt kind of lame about (shouldn't we be getting something more exotic, but I love crab rangoon so I wasn't exactly trying to turn this idea down) - but I am really glad we ordered it because it wasn't quite like typical Chinese restaurants' crab rangoon - the filling was very flavorful, I am pretty sure there was jalapeno in it, it almost had a jalapeno popper type quality. The fried dough itself was somehow better than other restaurants', and the sweet dipping sauce was delicious. It never occurred to me that crab rangoon would be even more awesome spicy! So good!
We also ordered a pitcher of Soju, definitely not to be missed - at the recommendation of our server we ordered yogurt flavor (it tastes and looks nothing like yogurt) and it was AWESOME. Sweet and delicious and pretty strong. I could get tanked on this stuff really quickly.
Love the atmosphere at this place, dark, kind of dive-y, definitely a bar, I bet the late night scene is really fun here. On just a Monday night we ran into an interesting character, definitely drunk, possibly on harder substances, who sat down at our booth since his buds were outside smoking and he was "soooo boredddd". Introductions were made, he "knows nothin' about Asian stuff" and then left us alone, friendly funny weirdo, the whole experience was so enjoyable and the staff was very friendly too.
The groupon got me in the door and now I will keep coming back! Yum! Total gem in West Rogers Park. My instinct is to give this place 5 stars off the bat but I will wait for my second review update for that ... !
This place gets four stars just for offering delivery! There are NO places near me that have korean delivery (ok, maybe one more spot, but i tried once and it was terrible). You get HUGE portions of food. The kimchi fried rice was amazing! The popcorn chicken was super yummy. Also, they forgot to deliver one item I ordered and they offered to either send it over or credit me for a free chapchae next time and took it off my credit card charge. I wlll be ordering from here again soon!
Review Source:Popcorn chicken, kimchi beukkombop, and the memories associated with this place, including being trampled by a Mongolian horde. The dining area is dimly lit, casual, and has plenty of TVs rerunning Korean MVs. The seats have tall backs and resemble patio benches.
The kimchi beukkombop (kimchi fried rice) is arguably the most epic meal I have had in years. It is served in a wide and shallow stone bowl with rice, gochu jang, vegetables and kimchi topped with eggs, spam, cheese and BACON! Seriously, I posted a photo of this delectable masterpiece on my facebook and there were more likes and comments on this one photo than I have pretty much had on my wall this entire year thus far.
Service is great, and some of the workers here speak very eloquent English. This place is ideal for groups of at least 4-6, and order soju.
As mentioned in my Hae Woon Dae post, start your night here, go to the neighboring Karaoke place, then end the night in Hae Woon Dae. Epic. Nuff said.
Cheers.
I came here on the groupon (which I think is still running as of this writing), and I would come back. Â
The food and drinks are mediocre but what makes this place special is the staff - they are cool. Â Not date supermodel and commute-by-jetpack cool (though you never know), but kind, helpful, and concerned about the well-being of their customers.
The booths are interesting, the atmosphere is ... weird. Â Too dark yet blindness-inducing at the same time. Â Whatever, they play music videos and there are worse things you can do to your customers when your establishment is filled with TVs.
The 5 stars are for the Popcorn Ckn, the Kimchee Fried Rice (topped with 2 fried eggs) and the overall nostalgic feeling that I get every time I visit the bar of my youth.
I haven't had the opportunity to try much else on the menu but honestly what they're known for and what I love are the items listed above. The chicken is tender, bite sized, and fried accompanied by a delicious spicy mayo sauce (??) and a small bowl of pickled radish and jalapenos. I haven't found anything quite like it in Chicago...As for the fried rice, it comes in a large stone dish, perfectly seasoned w/ lots of butter, ripe kimchee (yum!) all topped with a fried egg.
Bring a group of friends b/c food portions are quite large and don't forget to order a bottle of soju! You will leave with a smile on your face, enjoy!
They make their kiwi soju with fresh kiwi fruit. Good bye, yogurt soju. I've found a new favorite soju cocktail!
And they've got some pretty tasty Korean bar food. Spam alert! Their kimchi bokumbop is chock full of spam. It's also a ridiculously generous size.
This spot has been a Korean bar for generations in Korean bar years. I didn't come here often enough back in the day to know the owners but it feels like it's changed... for the better!
Been coming here for a long time for when we want Korean food along with tons of drinks. This is more of a bar than restaurant, there is music and sports playing on TV.
The food is one of the reasons why I come here. Like most other reviewers said, kimchi fried rice and popcorn chicken are the staple. I've tried most of the other dishes as well. I like weird food so chicken gizzard and intestines are awesome here as well.
Drinks are like any other Korean bar. I just stick with the regular stuff, soju and beer.
This is a place where you want to go to hang out with friends and have a good time and I have a blast every time I come here!
KOREAN BAR? YES!
$16 for yogurt soju? Yes please!
Its like drinking juice with alcohol... super easy shots ... but be careful these creep on you!
I'm loving the kimchi fried rice but beware its super spicy and i love it.
The setup is super cool with the big bench seats - great for a big party.
They're open late! So great drunk food spot in my opinion.
Their popcorn chicken is pretty bomb - i want that sauce everyday lol. I forgot when they have a special that its half off - i think friday - but dont quote me on that.
This place is a bar so don't expect good korean food!
It didn't seem like they used fresh rib eye cuts for their bugolgi judging from it's chewy texture. The bibimbap was bland since gucochang was a bit off. The pork/tofu "stew" was far from tasty and the pork in the stew was as hard as a rock.
If you're looking for good korean food, try the place next door.
Also known as YOSI on <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fgrubhub.com&s=c077f445c0f58c01f902dcc624c9eabb729cc1501e9105e88f0c900f5943d1fc" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://grubhub.com</a>
First time eating Korean food, and I cant promise I will again. I wish I knew more about the cuisine, but if its anything like this, I'm not a fan.
They delivered it quickly. Huge amounts.
I seriously got a BUCKET of Dak Tori Tang. Chunks of chicken thigh, huge slices of potato, floating in a red spicy sauce. Yikes. To be served over white rice that was quickly cooked, as told by the texture.
The potstickers were mediocre, salty as hell. The eggroll tasted as if it was kept together with peanut butter. Ew.
Just not a fan.
First time ever eating Korean food.
As per other recommendation of fellow yelpers I ordered the Dak Bokkeumbap | Chicken Fried Rice which was amazingly delicious and came with a side of kimchi . I also tried for the first time Makkoli, the Korean rice wine, can't drink too much of that as it is very strong but yummy.
My husband had the Bulgogi | Marinated Barbecued Beef which was also very good.
Overall a very cool experience.
Parking was easy to find right in front and the staff was very attentive. Would recommend for dinner with friends.
Probably one of the most technicolor joints I've been to. It's like Bassnectar fans barfed their wardrobe colors on the walls. Â Which isn't a bad thing. Â I seriously enjoyed the neon colors everywhere, it makes for a fun experience.
I also enjoyed the number of flatscreens around the bar. Â A couple of them will show ESPN or other sporting events, and the others will have Korean MTV or some sort of musical variety show on. Â So I got to watch some college basketball on one tv and dance/pop music numbers on another. Â K-pop music abounds. Â
We polished off pitchers of soju shots. Â They have a bunch of different flavors - I think we had watermelon and then kiwi soju. Â Be careful, those shots take awhile to work its magic, but watch out when it does.
Fun times here.
One of my favorite things to eat here is the Kimchi fried rice. Â Yummmm, it is stuffed with eggs, delicious kimchi, and spam! Â Also it is made in a stone pot thing, so the bottom of the rice gets crispy~ the best!!!
I also really like the flavored makgeolli ... soooo good. Â I generally don't drink much and don't really like alcohol, but that makgeolli is delicious. Â It also makes me feel like I'm in one of my favorite K-dramas, which is about makgeolli makers. :)
Everything I tried here was pretty good, but the kimchi fried rice stands out. Â I've had soon dubu, popcorn chicken, haemul pajun, clam soup, maybe some others. Â YuM!! Â Can't wait to go back and watch some basketball... and kpop music videos :)
Yes, we love their kimchi fried rice and their popcorn chicken!!!! It is what they are famous for. Sometimes there are nights that I just have crazy cravings for their popcorn chicken w their wonderful spicy mayo sauce!
Another dish that I love is their Mae Un Dak Gal Bi (spicy chicken). They also make you a spicy fried rice when you are almost done with your Mae Un Dak Gal Bi...
So delish!!!
On the side note, their vegetarian egg rolls are AMAZING! Ajumah makes it from scratch! I have dreams about these egg rolls, too!
I know that their prices are on the higher side, but remember that you are getting a HUGE portion! Not to mention, we almost ALWAYS have leftovers to take home.
It is a great place to come in a group and order different dishes. Also, I know that they use good quality, fresh ingredients. In the warmer months, Ajumah uses a lot of the fresh vegetables from her own garden!
We often come here to just have dinner with a group of friends and also to watch the Bulls game or some special fights on their big screen tv's.
Tonight there were 5 of us there to watch the Bulls game and to have dinner and we spent about $11 per person. Â We were FULL from all the food that we had! And Yes, we had leftovers!
came here mainly to try out their popcorn chicken after a few of my friends told me it was awesome. me and my friend ordered that and the large kimchi fried rice since it was 50% off from sunday - thursday 6pm-9pm (if i recall).. it is pretty expensive without the 50%, because the popcorn chicken would have been $16 and the large kimchi fried rice would be $28 haha..
the popcorn chicken was pretty good and the sauce (spicy mayo?) that came with it  compliments it really well , but i was expecting it to be a little more crispy. either way i would still recommend it to anyone that haven't tried it yet. the kimchi fried rice came in a sizzling hot pan with 2 eggs on top of the rice. it looked better then it taste, it wasn't bad tho.. i just think it was lacking some flavor.
service wasn't that great... being the only other table there, you would think the service is decent. but in this case they rarely came and check up on us and every time we needed something, we had to try and get their attention and raise our hands.
you come  here for two things: kimchi bokumbop and their popcorn chicken.
actually, i typically just go there just for the kimchi bokumbop...it's freakishly amazing. Â If i could grow a uterus and have the cook's baby, i probably would just so i could force him to make me kimchi bokumbop on the regular. Â i feel like i'm pregnant when i leave this place so i could probably deal with it.
If you're looking for late night Korean binge food.. this is the place!! They have flavored SOJU and the wait staff speaks English & Korean.
Their kim chee bok eum bap is delish!! It's fairly large and can be shared with 3 people. Prices are a little higher than average, I'd say around $12-15 for an entree.
They have beer and flavored SoJU.
Parking is a bit sparse but there's a karaoke bar right next door as well.
The dakdongjip (grilled chicken gizzards) are delicious! What can I say, I'm a fan of street food... in a restaurant. I'm not so sure I'd be as brave on the streets of Seoul though.
We also ordered the buldak (spicy grilled chicken). I didn't like this as much.
My friends and I had soju bombs here... Seriously not a good idea.
Overall, we had a great time. Loved it here. I can't wait to go back.
P.S. Since Nick M. asked, I thought I should clarify: I don't know if "soju bomb" is the correct name. It's similar to sake bombs... And according to Wiki, it's actually called poktanju (bomb drink). We poured out a shot of soju and a glass of beer, then we dropped the shot of soju into the beer and downed the drink. :)
This is another place to which we were introduced by a group of Korean friends. Â I might have liked it more had they not taken us to Dancen just a week before.
As a table, we ordered
Chicken gizzards (For the love of all things holy, stop asking whether we're sure. Â It's going to make us crazy.)
-- They were painfully chewy. Â At one point, I gave up on chewing and just swallowed my piece whole.
Squid- All the boys loved it.
Spicy Cow Intestines- I was pleased to find out how delicious this was. Â They really do mean that it's spicy, so don't order unless you can handle a lot of heat. Â Even better was the slightly burnt fried rice they made with what was left in the stone pan.
Dried Tobiko- Â While I wasn't a fan, everyone else at the table enjoyed it thoroughly.
Popcorn Chicken (surprisingly NOT ordered by the white kids from the south. haha.)
-- Good. Â Really, really juicy- I thought my first bite was undercooked, but it was so hot that there was no way.
A dish with steamed pork, cabbage, and radish kimchi. Â I don't know the name-- I didn't even hear it being ordered. Â I was just taught how to assemble. Â
--Delicious.
Overall, it was an okay experience. Â The guys who took us there say they like it because it's pretty cheap, but it seemed to be one of the most expensive places we've been.. and certainly not the best. Â Also, regardless of who you are (contrary to popular belief), you have to ask to get the water pitchers refilled. Â
I doubt we'll return-- there are better and cheaper places closer to us.
Bleh. They no longer have their half off food before 9pm deal. Spent $15 on the fried chicken, which tastes pretty good but you can get a bucket of popeyes for that much. And their ddukboki with ramen actually made me mad. At $14, they included no more than 10 pieces of dduk. And the pieces of fishcake were cut into these huge pieces. Sorry people, putting the food on a huge ass plate does not trick me into thinking there is more if it. The thing that kills me is that this type of Korean bar food is so cheap to make. The food wasn't as good as I remember it.
It's more bar than restaurant, but it's cheesy with their videos of manorexic pop boy bands and their barnyard benches.
Pass.
I was in the mood for good ol' Chicago comfort food  like Giordano's pizza--but my roommate wanted Korean food. I grumpily succumbed to her wishes and was rendered speechless at the simple yet scrumptious order.  35 minutes later GrubHub delivered warm Bibimbop and Veggie Fried Rice to our door.
Unfortunately the food was warm at best, but the magic of it all is how delicious the veggies and rice were in their cooled state. Â I mean, I am The Hotsauce Queen - it goes on everything, but Yosi's concoctions were so flavorful, sticky, crunchy, and sweet that my rooster sauce only hid the flavors that my tastebuds were screaming for.
Not only is the food delicious, they give plenty of it. Â Granted for $22, you should get plenty of rice, but our heap of rice and veggies lasted four meals.
I will definitely order Yosi again.
Oh how I miss the days of no suburban Korean Bars and having to venture into the Northside of the city to get my drink on! Well...not really...I prefer the short drives. But Yuwosaii was my hot spot back in the day! I have been coming here since I was 16! Man, I'm old. Although I don't frequent Yuwosaii as often as I used (ie every weekend...and during my first semester of college, 3-4 times a week...ahh to be 18 again...errr I mean 21), I still will vow that they have the BEST takteggim I've ever had. Their popcorny chicken takteggim is just amazing with their special sauce & moo. =P I will admit there were a few times in the past 11 since discovering them that I have skipped the drinks and simply gone for a takeout order of Takteggim. It's perfectly sized, perfectly flavored and goes just perfectly with their sauce! Om nomnom.
When I used to go regularly, the ahjeema was always great and we would chat a bit. The drinks prices were always reasonable & tasty although I can't vouch for that now.
I'm not Korean, but I know a Korean bar when I walk into one like Yosi (Yeowoosai). Came here on a Saturday night closer to midnight, and the place was packed.. with Korean teenagers [insert Asian emoticon denoting "lame"].
I will say that our group of diverse friends (Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, Filipino, Vietnamese, Indian, white) had a good time after we found a table to sit down and order.
Food is solid Korean grub to go with your drinking. The kimchi fried rice is decent and fun to split communally. The popcorn chicken was battered in a great manner and the dipping sauce was tits-tastic.
Thumbs up for having Korean music TV and music videos playing on the projection screen.
Again, stuff is expensive here, and even though they have "specials" on their website, the site isn't updated and in this economy, the owner was super stingy on honoring current specials. For example, on a weekday night we saw that a pitcher of beer was $8, but you only get ONE per table and that is the extent of feeling special for the night :[
Note: no half-priced food before 9 anymore.
I have been coming to this place for a while and it never disappoints me! I love their whole menu but the top items of course is the kimchi fried rice, popcorn chicken and atmosphere is great! I love the owners and its a great place to chill Korean style and a karaoke right next door!
Review Source:I used to come here a lot, but then I turned 21. Â In the dozens of times I've been here over the years, I got carded once.
If you're actually drinking age, the place ain't that special and is kind of expensive. Â But good for getting trashed and then going to the karaoke place next door. Â The kimchi fried rice and popcorn chicken are pretty solid.
For the person that commented on the name, it's an acroynm.
= Â Â which means, Let's Talk About Our Love Here. Â They could have called it, LTAOLH
If you don't come here during their special discount hours, food and drinks are very pricy here in my opinion, but I admit their food is good.
But I can get the same good food at bargain prices elsewhere.
This place brings alot of memories because this is the place that my friends and I always partied it up in our teenage years. Â And yes you're right, the adjacent stores all used to be full and occupied but it's pretty desolate here now.
You know what I love?
Their popcorn chicken and kimchi fried rice. Â The dip for the chicken is AWESOME. Â Do they have a recipe for it?
This is my favorite place to drink and eat. Â
You can even have the food ordered for take-out.
The prices are very reasonable.
Parking can be annoying though if it's packed.
Yeo woo sai today isn't as awesome a time as it used to be back, back like 1994 ish - 2000 in comparison to today. Â Much different times, times when in the immediate area you could find more than 3 Korean nightclubs to go too. Â Most would start their night here and eventually end up at Silk / Saga or Mo ra shi gae or the karaoke place next door. Â At that time, underage drinking was a cinch. Â Today.. hmm , not sure. Â If you get a chance, check it out with a few friends and make sure you tell them its your birthday. Â I've spent soo many birthdays, my own and friends. Â There's a birthday song by the group Turbo. Â Most people get into it, with the clapping and the excitement of it all. Â Down the hall to the washroom find loads of photos taken of joyous times at Yeowoosai from old to present. Â It's not hard to find me in a photo there, if there are still any that haven't been torn down or taken. Â Pre-partying here would consist of dinner, fried kimchi with a Korean style bacon, rice cakes in a spicy sauce, popcorn chicken (Kathy P mentioned), etc. Â Then you play paper, scissor, rock with your friends to see who takes shots of flavored Soju's. Â If you were late to a party you'd have to catch up by doing a glass of Soju straight in one shot out of an 8 oz beer glass. Â (Eventually that caught up to me like Jagear did) Â Imagine stumbling out of there after having your face smashed into birthday cake and entering the karaoke next door. Â
Good times. Â Something I remember is hanging out, drinking and eating good food and some stylishly cut fruit plates, can be very expensive. Â In comparison to an American bar, you can spend triple to four times as much money. Â Be careful. Â
I agree with Kathy P about their service. Â Yeowoosai has always had some cute ladies working waitstaff, though the service has always been sucky.
i confess, i've never been here, but i love it for its name. if i had a restaurant i hope it'd have a name like this, that no one can really pronounce with any certainty. it's like the songs you sing along with and realize five years down the line that you've been singing the totally wrong lyrics.
but i guess this is not what restaurant reviews are supposed to be. so i guess i'll have to update this one later to make it legit...
The food here is quite good, such as their popcorn chicken and their kimchi fried rice (I personally prefer it with egg instead of cheese). Â I used to love getting their cocktail sojus when I was younger. Â It's the ideal place to drink and chill before going to the karaoke place next door. Â Be warned that the service can be poor as they're not watching out to see if you need anything. Â You basically have to go up and grab them sometimes. Â The nice thing is that you can order food from there and bring it to the karaoke place if you want.
