I had their pizza at another one of their locations some time ago. Â This time I tried their bacon cheeseburger. Â That was really, really good. Â It took awhile for them to fix it, but when I got it, I didn't mind the wait. Â Very juicy! Â The waiter commented that after seeing my burger he knew what he was going to eat for dinner. Â The fries were good, as well.
Review Source:I grew up enjoying Beggar's Pizza in Blue Island ever since I can remember. Ordering pizza from anywhere else wasn't an option - it was THAT good. I will admit that one of the things I missed most moving out of BI was no longer having easy access to Beggars.
Well, you can guess how excited I was when they started up opening up locations in the city: first across from Union Station and most recently on the north side. Â You can now rejoice because Beggar's has opened up shop in Wrigleyville!
This location is mainly carry out as it has only a few tables to dine in. However, if you DO dine in, the service is always fast and friendly. We have dined here a couple of times & it's always clean, free refills on soft drinks, and the guy behind the counter always checked up on us, all the while manning the phones.
If you are looking for something quick to-go, they have pizza by the slice, as well as pre-made salads too.
Now, onto the pizza. As they say, they "lay it on thick". My favorite is the thin crust - crispy thin crust, high quality ingredients, excellent cheese and sauce. The mozzarella cheese is laid on thick & the sauce is the perfect combination of spice/sweet and not salty! The Italian sausage is fresh and actually tastes like meat. Beggars definitely gives Giordano's a run for its money.
Be sure to add Beggar's Pizza to your list of go-to pizza ordering places! We are glad we are right on the border for delivery in Lincoln Square too - yay!
I've had Beggar's once in the south loop, and was so excited to see that they opened a spot in Wrigleyville. I live in Andersonville, and there are plenty of places I order from in Wrigleyville that deliver to me, so I assumed the same with Beggar's. Imagine the horror, when I get through the entire on-line ordering process (read:MOUTH WATERING PICTURES), painstakingly pick my toppings, crust, etc., and then click submit, only to learn that I'm out of their delivery area.
At this point, I'll stop at NOTHING to get this pizza, so I pick up the phone and give them a bell. The guy on the phone took my info, and asked me to hold on right after I gave him my address. I was audibly repeating "please, please, please, please" as he was clearly inquiring as to whether they could deliver to me. He came back to tell me that I am indeed out of the delivery area, however that they weren't all that busy, and that they could send my pizza to me with a little extra time padded in there.
The pizza is outstanding and laying it on thick is an understatement. The service was SUPER helpful and accommodating, and the delivery didn't take any longer than I'd have expected it to.
If I call during busier times and they can't make it out for a delivery to me, I'll get in the car and pick up. These guys just won my business... for life. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a pizza to eat.
So, I've gone back for another try at the suggestion of the owner (see my previous review). Â Sorry, same exact pizza as the first time. Â Except there was a larger portion of an undercooked pizza with a white, barely melted cheese center. Â I picked the pizza up and had to put it into my oven at home to cook and brown the rest of the pizza. Â I don't understand how someone could take a pizza like this out of the oven and think it was done and ready to eat. I'd be embarrassed to serve something like that.
Review Source:Is it cheesy? Â
Yes... but not too cheesy!
How's the sauce?
Good... but not too much sauce!
That is a sampling of the conversation we had with some drunk guys deciding whether or not they should enter into the realm of Beggar's Pizza. Â For a 2 am late night munchie stop, the restaurant and bathrooms were very clean.
I ordered the BBQ Chicken Pizza... I was super excited that they had this! Â I really liked the thickness of the pizza and the amount of sauce and ingredients that they put on the pizza. Â I also got to try a bite of my friend's deep dish sausage pizza and it was pretty good. Â I am very picky about sausage and I approved of Beggar's. Â I am very glad my friend made me go out for food after a long night out!
Only pizza slices are available late at night!
The owner (Larry) sent me a message and a credit for my troubles last time (they were closed early but were still accepting orders on grub hub).
After getting my pizzas, here are my thoughts:
deep dish - the sauce is ho hum, but the ratios of cheese and toppings are good. Â Crust tastes different (not necessarily nor bad), maybe there's corn mixed into the dough?
I do like that their thin crust isn't really thin crust (I hate tombstone thickness, but like italian style thin on some occasions). Â It holds up well to a crapload of cheese and toppings without becoming mush.
I suppose the "lay it on thick" slogan isn't just meaningless hype. Â kudos for that, although the tab for two larges does come out to be $50 after you add in tax and tip. Â slightly pricier than the chain pizza places.
I believe this is my first time trying Beggar's. Â We stopped in during the Super bowl, Â four employees were standing behind the counter while one was working. Â Wrigleyville was dead last night, most that came out on this cold night were out for bar specials. Â The pizza in the case looked recent but tasted a few hours old. Â Two types available, thin and deep dish. Â No one said hello or goodbye nor did they get off their asses and help us quickly. Â One gal was handling a carry out order, then waited on us after finishing up.
Their thin crust was heavy, toppings and taste reminded me of Sbarro's or most types of "Mall food court pizza". Â The bottom of the slice was dusted with bread crumbs. Â After a few bites I couldn't deal with the super chewy cheese or meat toppings, so I removed them and ate the crust with sauce only. Â I think every centimeter of that slice was covered in sausage or pepperoni. Â The sauce was not sweet, you can taste tomato sauce with a salty taste, so if that flavor sparks your interest you should check them out and leave Ian's to the rest of us.
A slice of thin crust with a 20 oz bottled water ran me about $7 dollars. Â I'm not for certain I would go back to try their stuffed, unless ordering a full pie like another reviewer had mentioned. Â Maybe it's better tasting when fresh. Â If they offered a naked slice, sauce and crust I would buy one for about $1.50. Â If Beggars can't be choosers, I ought not to return.
I hope this is the beginning of a Beggar's incursion into the north side of Chicago. This may be the pizza that comes the closest to my personal gold standard, Home Run Inn. The big similarity is that both Beggar's and Home Run Inn are very generous with the toppings, which are made from top shelf ingredients (great Italian sausage). The crust on Beggar's isn't quite as awesome, but it's plenty good and holds up with all the cheese, sauce and other stuff on top.
I've only gone there to get slices, and since the location is fairly small, it's probably more for delivery than dining in. Â And since I just get slices, I can't really comment on the customer service. But the pizza is outstanding.
Finally, a Beggar's Pizza on my side of the City,
In Wrigleyville..
In all of the Beggar's Pizza Commercials they show
loads of toppings being piled on thick..
I was like..Oh, C'mon this is advertising..there's no way
a pizza could look that good..
I stand corrected..
Folks, Beggar's Pizza is the best pizza I have ever had!
Thin Crust is definitely the way to go. here..
Perfect Crust, Perfect Toppings, delivered hot to my door..
Could'nt  ask for more than that!
I also ordered fried sausage and cheese ravioli which were da bomb!
A nice staff at Beggar's , a courteous guy who took my order
and a real nice delivery guy..
At first I thought Beggar's was a little higher priced than other pizza places...
But, boy, is it worth it!
So, if in Wrigleyville and craving a really great pizza stop by Beggar's..
You wont be sorry..:)
Sampled a variety of appetizers.
The wings are good size with lots of meat, but tasted as if the frying oil had not been changed/filtered in awhile. Â The buffalo sauce was gross and minimally applied. Â The blue cheese was on the low end. Â Despite the positive wing reviews for other Beggar's locations, I'd advise to AVOID the WINGS. Redmond's does better wing-wise for that area.
Cheese garlic bread was average as were the cheese-stuffed bread sticks.
Will check out the pizza next time and update.
So in a twist of fate, I had the good pleasure of speaking to the owner of Beggar's Pizza (Larry Garetto) regarding my horrible experience. Â He sincerely apologized for the mix-up, and offered me a credit to try that location again. Â So even with the high level of irritation after the first try, I gave them another shot. Â The guy who delivered the food (Sergio) was also truly apologetic and said it wouldn't happen again on his route--even though my place is slightly outside of their delivery route.
If I slap someone's hand when they suck, I will kiss someone's head when they make up for it. Â Thanks again Larry!
