This place is a hidden gem!
The bar has an old hollywood feel, which is cool, but I became partial to the outdoor patio when my friend hosted her bday party there. There's an awesome candelabra, outdoor bar, entrance to a night club, stages for bands, and just a cool ambience.
And the best part is, drinks are cheap (at least on Sundays). Beer was $4-5 and well drinks were similarly priced. Time to bring Sunday Funday back!!
Famished and having not had the foresight to dine ahead of time, we went to Boardner's recently on a Saturday evening prior to stopping in at Bar Sinister. I'd been there a long, long ago (although I honestly can't remember much about my first visit).
This place is quite loud, both with the music they were playing and with the other patrons talking over it.
That's not my preference unless I'm at a nightclub or otherwise dancing, but it's probably in line with what one can expect of most similar bars around that time in the evening. My preference for a quieter environment where it's easier to hold a conversation probably makes me the outlier, not Boardner's, so that that with a grain of salt. I'm not sure if the 70's disco heavy music they were playing is their norm, but (volume aside) I did enjoy it.
The decor is pretty nice; The place has a definite "old Hollywood" vibe, and the large, comfortable booths are a really nice touch. I much prefer booths to tables, especially as they cut down on the noise a bit.
I would recommend that they ditch the TVs, however. If I wanted to watch TV I'd stay at home, and for some reason on this evening they had "American Psycho" (with Christian Bale) playing. I'm not sure what benefit there is to watching a movie whose dialog you can't even hear, esp. one that is mostly comprised of graphic murder scenes.
The macaroni and cheese was actually quite good by bar food standards - not to mention reasonably priced - and I found the service to be prompt and friendly. Our server brought us our check early (as we were in a bit of a hurry), which was much appreciated.
I probably wouldn't drive to Hollywood just to visit Boardner's, but if I'm in the area and need a bite to eat or am in the mood for a quick drink I'd certainly consider dropping by.
Boardner's is my favorite hidden gem in Los Angeles. My home away from home. I've been a customer for six years - my husband and I love it so much we even got married there. Let me tell you why you should never underestimate this place...
The Atmosphere/Decor: Old Hollywood and gothic feel with big comfy booths and a ghostly presence. I mean that the best way possible. It's very clean, dark and inviting. We bring a lot of friends there for happy hour and they fall in love with Boardner's too.
The Food: We have our favorite items on the menu (bacon wrapped dates stuffed with blue cheese, nachos, pulled pork sliders, cheese fries all very decadent and amazing) but we are never disappointed when we try something new. Everything is tapas style comfort food with a little gourmet twist. You can get a few things and share with a group of people.
Customer Service with a smile: No really. Not a fake, "hey welcome to insert-generic-restaurant-here" smile. You can tell these are down to earth, friendly people who genuinely care about their job. Â We normally go for happy hour on Mondays when John is the bartender. John is always friendly and makes sure we are taken care of - we appreciate great customer service. Overall the staff is excellent.
So to sum it up, if you are looking for an eclectic dinner and/or drink spot in Hollywood that is away from the tourists and bro bars, go to Boardner's. Maybe you'll see a ghost or two while you're there.
Always a great crowd, always a fun time. I love their Monday nights (Blue Mondays), and Moscow Wednesdays are fun as well. Great ambience, I love the high ceilings and the decor. The drinks are good, at average prices for Hollywood. The outdoor patio is an awesome little hang out spot, whether a band is playing or there's a DJ.
Review Source:I've been here for some of the events they host. I would like to first state that I am completely in love withe the decor. Its very Gothic. The place itself is very spacious with a dance floor, lounge at the top, and a stage in another room. Moscow Wednesdays takes place here it is actually an 18+ club. To be honest being over 21 I try to stay away from the 18 and over places just because of the younger crowd they bring in, however it just depends on the people you go with. Me and my date for the night had a blast dancing and drinking. The performers that night put on a good show. I can see myself going back again and again
Review Source:So we came here on a Six Taste tour, and I had never heard of the place...boy am I happy that I did now cause it's AWESOME!!! The history alone of this place is fascinating, it really takes you back in time and you can still smell all of the smoke that seeped in to the walls which gives it that "yup you know it's some old stuff" feeling. We toured the back area where they have the nightclub, might have to be returning for the sinister Saturdays they have ;)
So we chilled for a bit and grabbed a drink at the bar, the bartender was SUPER nice, she had long blond curly hair as I recall and just honestly the best and nicest personality. The drinks were great! We got to try some new items that the new chef of the restaurant is showcasing, the two dishes were excellent. The corn with blackened butter was delicious, and the mac & cheese was as close to heaven as I could get while still feeling comfortable haha! Can't wait to check out their full menu and see what else there is to explore!
If you want to pay $10 for a watery, tasteless cosmo, then please, be my guest! Plus, it took forever to get the drinks we ordered. Â We also ordered a couple of things to eat which, again, took forever to get. The rice was watery as well. Â The wings were ok. Â Hot, as expected. Â There was some woman screaming behind us and I think she worked there but still. Â We did have a laugh at that. Â
It's basically a bar, but their website makes it seem as though they have fabulous food. Not so much.
I complained to the waitress about the cosmo that I had drunk, but she said she wouldn't tell the bartender because she was in a bad mood. Â huh?
I'd give it zero stars if I could. Â But I gave it 1 because the waitress was fairly cheerful.
The club here (B52) which it appears that most of the reviews are about...is really lame. They say they open at 10, but really that is when they want you to line up and draw attention to this place. According to the staff, each night is run by different promoters and they set the schedule and cover charge...meaning both are fairly random.
Basically, don't count on this place for a night out... Or be ready for disappointment.
Recommended by a friend as a bar that has better food than drinks, we swung by here after a show at iO Theater.
Will say one thing and one thing only: Â Bacon Wrapped Dates Dipped in Honey!!!!!!!!!!
I'm starting to think driving all the way to Hollywood and the horrific parking situation may not be so bad for this dish...hm.
Drinks are cheap, interesting crowd, quirky music, Pulp Fiction on TV's...this bar is full of characters.
I've never been price gouged on drinks the way I was during my last trip to Boardners. I realize it's Hollywood but this place is a dive bar, not a club. I got two drinks and ended up paying more than I would to actually buy a bottle of what I was drinking. Not an exaggeration. $22 for two bourbon and sodas?!! Boardners is a comfortable place to hang out. The music isn't too loud so you can have a conversation and there's plenty of seating but it's not worth the price. Not by a long shot.
Review Source:Complete with inappropriately drunken man, hot bartender and seedy looking regulars, Boardner's is my new favorite Hollywood spot. I hardly ever venture that close to Hollywood Blvd (aka West Coast Times Square), but I'd gone to see a friend's screening at The Egyptian and this was his place of choice for celebratory drinks afterward.
I just love a place with old character and style that you know has been tested by time, but comes out on the other end cooler than anything you could redesign today.
Also, I was hungry so I ordered lime chicken skewers - holy crap... did NOT expect something that yummy to come out of the kitchen of Boardner's (although it took a super long time...)
Cool, old, small, music venue. Â Have seen a few shows here and you can get super close to the stage. Â Drink prices are comparable to most surrounding Hollywood spots. Â Only thing I don't like about this place is that you can smoke where the music is being played. Â Even if you don't smoke, you will end up leaving smelling like an ash tray. Â
Like Aaron P. said, look for the $5 parking at the end of the block.
I came for Bar Sinister and it was pretty miserable.
Knowing that you have a nightclub that is going to be packed on a Saturday night, you would think they would make sure there was adequate air flowing through the building. Â This was definitely not the case. Â It felt like you were in a sauna. Â When I asked one of the servers why the air wasn't on, she told me that even if it was, we wouldn't be able to feel it anyways. Â She recommended that we go upstairs (which is a bondage/fetish area) because it might be cooler. Â As we made our way upstairs, it was just as hot, except we were watching someone getting spanked instead. Â I preferred being miserable downstairs- at least the music and visuals were better.
Back in the day, the patio area used to be uncovered where you could get some relief and it wasn't so bad. Â Now that it's covered, it just traps in all of the body heat from the packed room. Â The "outside" area is a small strip that's packed because it's the main entrance/exit, so there really isn't really any room to loiter and cool off without being yelled at by security to move out of the way.
They played great music, but the discomfort wasn't worth coming back.
My advice to everyone - there are MANY places nearby where you get cheaper/more generous drinks and the staff have much less attitude than this place. Places like the Pig 'n' Whistle, Maui's, Â Musso and Franks.
I went there recently with a friend and we had several drinks and food in a booth and there was a mix-up with the bill because the waitress charged my friend for 2 drinks that I actually paid for myself at the bar - we had 2 separate checks. Â We were very polite about it, we didn't even demand that the 2 drinks be taken off, but just because we questioned the bill, she gave us a lot of attitude and then called the bar manager over who ended up taking one drink off the bill.
Long story short, I didn't feel like tipping her but my friend did. Â He said he tipped her about 12 dollars - total for both bills was about $100. Well, this was about a month ago and we went back there a couple days ago and the bar manager said that my friend was banned from drinking there "because he didn't leave a tip and the waitress complained." Â When my friend told him that he did in fact leave a tip, he didn't listen. Whatever happened to the customer being right? Â And can you ban someone from an establishment for not tipping? Â I thought tipping was supposed to be optional!
Like I said, there's much better choices in Hollywood than Boardners! Keep your money, and your tips, and go somewhere else!
Going here for my birthday tonight.
The owners were SUPER nice and let us get an area outside at one of my favorite patios in all of Hollywood.
It annexes to this club next door that has random nights:
Goth Fetish Night/Hip Hop Nights/Etc.
Had a great time there last time.
(Sorry about the bathroom clean up guys, my friend was outta control that night!)
Looking forward to tonight and will report back if anything goes wrong- which I know it wont'.
For people talking about Boardners' layout, IT WAS A SPEAKEASY. Of course it's like a fuckin' maze. There's the main entrance where the bands play, two small hallways that lead to a larger dance floor and a bar/restaurant next door (there's a doorway that connects all 3 from the room where the bands play).
Moscow Wednesdays is my usual hangout as of late because some of my friends aren't quite 21 yet so we can't hit up the ~big boy clubs~ till they are. I first started coming here when I was 19 or 20 (around 2008) and I just kind of stuck around ever since. I watched Wednesday nights at Boardners grow from a handful of older rock-a-holics and hipsters and attractive scenesters (my friend and I were like the ONLY non-21 year olds back in 2008-2009) to a huge crowd of 18, 19 and 20 year old scene queens, trashy slutty girls, trannies, hot messes, ghettobirds, the occasional lost British toursits, and.. well.. this is starting to sound like a club made from the dreams of Stefon ("City Correspondent"from SNL) I used to see Sonny Moore (Skrillex) there sometimes but since he got popular especially with the 18+ crowd he doesn't go anymore. (this is why we can't have nice things, I guess).
Despite all this, Boardners is the ONLY place in Hollywood I can go to the bathroom alone and guys will leave me alone. I've only had someone grab at me once in the 4 years I've been going to Boardners but I whirled around and gave him such a tongue lashing that the people around us started making fun of him for being so rude to me and for being shot down the way he was after I left. Otherwise the guys that go (I know as a girl, the "creeper alert" status is really important to me) are pretty nice and most of them show up with girls anyway so no one has to worry about creepers getting all up on them.
Straight up though, there is a video my friend recorded of a couple pretty much having sex on the window of the main dance floor on one of the raised platforms. The window is directly outside the smoking patio. We could see everything. This is what Moscow has become. Thankfully I didn't see such nasty hoochie behavior like that again. The incident happened in February last year.
There's an Asian photographer that does the photobooth, he usually acts like he's too good to be there. Last time I went though there was a new photographer who was happy and bouncy and really told his photo subjects to "werk" and encouraged us to pose instead of just point and shoot apathetically like the old photographer. Le Disko should hire the new photographer from now on.
Get your drinks at the bar where the bands play. They seem to make the drinks stronger over there and the bartenders are so friendly even if you don't know them. They WILL start recognizing you, though, Â if you become a regular. And for gods sake, don't forget to tip. The drink prices are pretty standard for Hollywood nights.
The temperaments of the bouncers really depends on how they're feeling at the time. The bouncer with the braids has either been REALLY nice (he let me and my friends just walk in because we came early then decided to pregame at the bar) or REALLY dickish ( My drinking wristband had torn off on a railing on the stairs inside and he just threw it on the ground and said if I picked it up I'd be kicked out -- we had to go talk to one of the promoters to secure a new wristband for me. Ugh what a dick). Basically the less you have to deal with security the better your experience will be. AKA don't act a fool and don't talk to them unless you have to.
TL;DR: Wednesday night hosts a mixed crowd of mostly youngsters, drinks are better at the bar where the bands play, don't talk to the security guards unless you got some nice titties and legs for days cause otherwise they won't give a shit about you.
I went for my friend's birthday who was a promoter so we ended up walking right to the front. I think the line was really long but i came from the opposite end so i didnt really look but the layout is kind of obnoxious.
Its like a maze, i got lost a lot. Theres an outdoor smoking spot surrounding a fountain and off to the side a stage with the DJ. and three entry ways to the main dance floor. Luckily the DJ booth in that area was high above on a balcony so there was enough space but it was still crowded.
THE NEGATIVES: I was with two guys so leaving them while i was in the main room was a death wish. The crowd was less than. I saw way too many coochies and pu$$y poppin. Im at a club so thats expected but not at eye level!! there were some raised platforms that girls would go up on and just do the raunchiest moves. Its really sad when you can spot the prettiest person and shes being hounded every time she takes a step. I saw a couple of girls who looked 5 months pregnant, no joke. The DJ was playing the typical Top 40 party/rave/club music and threw in some Mexican jams, which i seemed to be ONLY one that didnt know the words to.
Ive never seen security guards dance!! EVER!! they were sneaking dances left and right and shining lights up girl's dresses and skirts :/ yuckk
I guess the experience started going hill when i saw this guy basically eating out his girlfriend and they decided to shine lights on them
Closer to the end of the night everything went downhill when the sound system stopped working, a fight broke out -__- and when they decided to kick everyone out and they thought that closing off the front entrance was a good indea so there were hoards of ppl stuck in the hallways and doors when they directed everyone to a door behind the lounge section.
Maybe ill go another night when its diverse, i had fun with my friends but there were just too many negatives.
So my band played here and everything went really well, and the staff was really friendly and accommodating. Â We brought in hundreds of people and packed the house. Â If you're in the area and looking for a good place to hang out, this is the place.
I personally loathe places with extremely loud house music, and I didn't even know there was a huge dance club right next door, but that's not why i'm rating it a 1/5. Â I've accepted the fact that places in Hollywood play uber loud music, have high drink prices, and i will always have to deal with it.
But anyway - Â the reason why I'm reviewing this place is because of one of the bouncers.
My girlfriend had an empty flask in her purse and the nice lady up front had to confiscate it, and said we can come get it back once we leave... which is understandable even if it is empty.
Well once we left.. the big, black, bouncer with the braids who looks like predator/coolio wouldn't even hear us out when we tried to get it back. Â I've never felt so disrespected before. Â He was on a power trip and wouldn't even give us time to explain the simplicity of the situation to him. Â He just kept cutting us off as if we were just random stumbling drunks when we were the exact opposite (sober and packing their place full of people bringing them business).
We went across the street to meet up with some friends to say "hi," and on the way back to our car we noticed there was someone else working the door, so we decided to try and ask for it back again.
The newer bouncer just replied with "what did it look like?" Â We answered, and he goes "oh, yeah, it's right here," and it was right on the floor behind the fucking door to get in. Â He hands it back to us and we were on our way.
I don't give a shit who you are, but if you get your kicks by interrupting the people who are doing the dirty work with bringing you business and contributing to your paycheck, then go fuck yourselves. Â I'm sorry, Boardner's, but due to this pompous asshole i have to give you a shitty review in hopes the owner will notice and take appropriate action.
I will play this venue again, and I will be sure to say hi to Predator.
Hopefully he's reading this now (hi!! Â remember me?)
This was one of the stops for Santacon this year. I thought the atmosphere was great but what wasn't great was the service at the bar. The chick behind the bar went over me TWICE while I was waiting at the bar to take over people's orders. I got to the point where I just had to say "excuse me, I have been here for a while and I'm ready place an order" right as someone else that just pulled up to the bar was giving their order.
I ordered 2 beers and a margarita. To top it all off, the bartender bitched about having to make a margarita! I'm sorry, but isn't that your, I don't know, job? To serve and mix drinks because you are a bartender? STUPID!
Yeah, worst stop at Santacon!
The Most Eclectic & Inspiring Venue I Hit in Hollywood!
SITREP
First I have to give major props to ALYSSA who keeps me posted every single dam week on the hap'nins at BOARDNERS. Â
I love this venue, it's professional staff, the awesome DJs that have their residencies here, and the superb venue physical plant that makes it both (1) One of the Best Dance Clubs in Hollywood; and, (2) One of the best live performance venues to see bands.
THE SETUP
What can I say? Â DJs I respect - such as Rocky Slaughter, Xian Vox, Amanda Jones, and Bruce Perdue - create and energize events such as BAR SINISTER (Saturday Nights) and BLUE MONDAY (Monday Nights) that just create an environment that has you closing the place down at 3am in the morning!
BAR SINISTER
On Saturday night during the Bar Sinister event, the venue uses the spectacular outside courtyard with a stage area where the bands play and kick-ass. Â I've seen so many wonderful performances by groups that I love such as Savi0r, The Birthday Massacre, and many many more.
FETISH ART GALLERY
Meanwhile, in the upstairs loft area, there is dynamic "play area" where the more fetish-minded can engage in some fun. Â On some Bar Sinister nights, there are also some exquisite works of Art that are displayed and featured - along with the artists. Â Some of the fetish art is quite impressive and cutting-edge, a feature that I really enjoy when hitting Bar Sinister.
It is here that there is a true fusion between ART, MUSIC and DANCE, and where they all come together in this creative, eclectic and eccentric environment.
BLUE MONDAY
On Monday Nights, while the inside dance floor features the best in New Wave 80s and Pop 80s music, the outside state area features some of the most fun groups of dancing and DJ beat mixing that you will ever enjoy. Â It is an eclectic and dynamic musical mix that brings considerable variety that will keep you dancing in whichever area you find yourself.
THE LOWDOWN
When in Hollywood on a Monday Night and/or a Saturday Night, this is the venue you will want to be at!
If you want to get away from all the glamour and pretentiousness that most hollywood clubs and bars have to offer, this is the place. I went here to meet up with a couple of friends for a bar crawl and it was pretty nice overall. It has a nice, laid back vibe, booth or bar seating, they have food (don't know how good their food is) and they were playing great 80's music! so they kind of won me over after that, haha. Oh and this review is only for the bar part of Boardner's because I didn't go in to the club. They do have a patio area, where it seems that bands play there occasionally or all the time? I don't know.
I got there just after happy hour so I had to buy regular priced beer (Stella for $6). My friend ordered red bull and vodka and wasn't content with his drink. He said that most of what he could taste was the red bull. A weak drink for $9 wasn't his idea of fun. I agreed. If you're on a budget, come during their happy hour otherwise, there are better places to go and for cheaper. It all really depends on what you're looking for. We were there from like 8-9:30 and the place was kind of empty. There was a bit of an older crowd too. I think that it's good just to go in and take a look, maybe stop during a bar crawl, but not to stay and party all night.
Oh and PS: What's up with them having 2 restrooms for men, one unisex, and one for women?
Came here for the first time today. I am a fan of the PBR and a shot for $7. Also, after I ordered I noticed something along the lines of blueberry lemonade + vodka for the same price. Darnit!
Something along the lines of $5 well drinks and I did notice a sign saying 2 for the price of one on Tuesdays. Didn't try any food here but they had some delicious sounding finger foods. I Â have to go back for the tandori chicken wings :)
Boardner's is the prime example of a 2 in 1 deal. Have friends seeking a club with emo/hipster/ "trying too hard" kiddos who think they are at a punk rock club? Try the club side of Boardner's. Maybe some of your group wants a more chill, divey bar... they can go to the bar side. Hey, you gotta applaud a venue whom can satisfy all your friends in one building...
Boardner's has grown in popularity in the last couple years since I've first checked it out. The club portion is esthetically pleasing. It certainly fits the aire of Hollywood and is no wonder it is located near Hollywood/Highland. However, Boardner's has become overly infested with kids whom A) look underage and B) shop either at Hot Topic or American Apparel and are wearing EVERY single hipster fad at once. The clientele can get a bit overwhelming... in the "I want to punch you" sort of way. Even the bouncer at the door thinks he is working the gates to heaven and gives you a the typical "I'm too good for you" Hollywood bouncer attitude. Do the Hollywood bouncers take a course to learn to be jerks?! I was working merch for a band performing and was on the guest-list and he was still a primal douchebag.
Thus, I suggest the bar over the club. The bar is more dive with a bit older, less annoying crowd. A super loud jukebox plays music from indie to top 40 and there is suitable seating (including large booths) for your lounging needs. The bartenders are a bit pretentious (who tries to school you on the background of a simple vodka-cranberry. Well, this IS Hollywood) and the drinks are too expensive but people watching here is a REAL treat. Especially because Hans and his backpack toting buddy from Europe staying at the hostel a few doors down like to come check out the beats.
Not a bad place. Mixes Hollywood with dive and trendy with hostel visitors. Viva la Hollywood.
Hey Mr. DJ you can get this started, everybody's ready to
party all nightttttt! A couple of friends and I love heading to 80s clubs and we selected Blue Mondays at Boardner's to accommodate our needs.
-Free entrance (go to their site online and click on their free pass) Cmon a free club? Now that's banging.
True this is an 18+over but think about it, its Monday its a school night and I'm sure 18 year olds these days are not into the 80's as much as us cooler kids are.
-Well drinks are $3.00! Vodka + Juice, Coke + Rum, and other little buzzers are only $3.00! I asked for a Scooby Snack shot and the bartender was simply honest "are you sure you want to buy this shot more than 5 bucks? we are having 3 dollar specials right now" How honest! Thank you Mr.Bartender that served me three mixed drinks and got me tipsy.
The environment on this club is dark and has rather a gothic punk feel to it but it just fits. One room plays the 80's music while another has the indie (aka the smokers area since it's outside). There's an upstairs lounge area where geek nerds play old school Nintendo! (sorry for the guy who I sat next to while tipsy and explaining to him why SNES was way better whoops!)
The crowd here wasn't bad. There were the silly solo dancers that rocked their booty off while others danced it groups. It's the 80s! You can dance any way you want and it wouldn't look weird. The D.J could've rocked better music but I still managed to sweat.
This venue certainly isn't Clockwork Orange but it does it's job. Parking is easy, lounge areas are all over, and the drinks were pretty nicely priced. The dance floor is tiny but it hardly gets packed on Mondays.
Hopefully next time I'll be staying until the music stops.
You know, from the outside the kind of dive bar that you would probably see in the bowels of downtown but after going in & seeing everything I was really surprised. The place is pretty cool. Even though I was working there instead of enjoying the party, there was a cool moment when I was recognized by some fellow Yelpers coming to enjoy the costume party happening that night. Of course they were just too cool to get dressed up.
Anyway, the decore is really cool & the djs spinning that night did a good job. The security guards were quickly shuffling out alot of drunk people within an hour of the party while being courteous at the same time.
Anyway, I will for sure be stopping by to have a drink from time to time.
Parking though, watch the street signs iof that is where you park or pay one of the lots.
I came for Bar Sinister....wow..the creatures of the night have lost some of their luster....
Um...The drinks are overpriced, it's horribly crowded, it's a nice atmostphere, and it has potential...I haven't been on any other night, so I'm sure it's better...
I agree with Rizza, no cuties...I know different club...but some of the goth and 80's crowd tend to mix...
Omg. Yeah...Bar Sinister...just...lost its appeal to me..cuz all the drinking and drugs the Goth crowd did in their early teens finally caught up with them.....So yeah, You can probably get laid, if you have horribly low standards...
If you want to dance.........Um..they dont' play much Goth music...just industrial or EBM..........I can only take Combichrist and VNV Nation for som much though..and fucking Covenant...stop playing it.
If you like ebm, Industrial..........go here.
If you like Death Rock/Old school Goth DO NOT COME HERE you will want to shoot yourself. Â
I've been here for the food...pretty yummy.
and the Upstairds lounge....yeah. really sexy beasts hang out up there......things I can't unsee....
THEY HAVE a DRESS CODE FOR BAR SINISTER:
Please wear black, NO JEANS! But horribly fitting S and M clothes are ok. Â
Um......check it at your own risk.
AGAIN THIS IS HOLLYWOOD!!!! IT GETS NUTS HeRE GO EARLY!
As a burgeoning hipster, I think it is important to frequent the popular watering holes of the too-cool-for-school set. Â Here, at Moscow at Boardners, the young, beautiful, and gaydar-confounding come to play.
A work buddy was telling me how she was going to Moscow, to which I had never been, and I thought it sounded interesting (as I get older and less concerned with everyone looking at *me* when I go out, I tend to appreciate venues with live music) but I rarely venture to those sorts of places as I have, underneath my impressive, armored, spike-ridden ego, a surprising lack of self esteem, and I didn't have anyone to go with. Â More importantly, it's a straight bar, and I don't care WHAT you people say, it's just as weird for us to be in your bars alone as it is for you to be in ours alone. Â Honestly if i saw one more faux-hawked boy start mauling some under-fed stick-figure with Joan Jett hair and American Apparel leggings, I was just gonna keck.
Anyway, after spending the entire drive down talking with my ex on the phone, whaddaya know, dead battery, so I had no way of knowing when MY Joan Jett was getting there with her man-candies. Â I bravely sallied on, though, as I had received a text earlier from Keith letting me know I was on the list, so I figured, hey, it's free. Â Found some street parking on Highland and hoofed it the four or so blocks over to Cherokee. Â It was either that or pay $10 to park in the lot right next door... but four blocks? Â Come on people. I saved $2.50 a block. I would walk all day if someone paid me $2.50 a block. Â Anyway...
After waiting an interminably long time, and talking to some surprisingly friendly people, my friends showed up, and I had an awesome time. The music inside is very kicky and fun, and the live bands outside were really something... one in particular, called Major Grace. The lead singer actually wrote their Myspace on his song list for the evening and gave it to me, so I am just gonna be saving that until they are hugely famous and then sell it on eBay. Check them out! http://www.myspace.com/m… .
Honestly, the people were cool, the drinks were reasonable, the live music was seven thumbs up, and the dance music was tons o' fun. Â I heartily recommend it to just about anyone. Â
Seriously, though, to my queers: I don't advise hitting on any boys. Â I think they're all straight, despite the fact that they all look as though they raided my closet.
I love the ambiance of this place. Â It's warm, dimly-lit, and relaxing. Â Game recognize game. Â Easily-accessible dance floor is roomy enough to get your moves in and end up finishing off upstairs on the comfy, romantic couches. Â Patio area has enough ventilation for you smokers out there, and for the non-smokers, like me- you won't smell like an ashtray when you leave the club.
Drink prices are decent for a Hollywood club. $4 per beer.
I used to come here alot when there was a house music promotion on Friday nights. Â Since then, it has mostly been hip-hop promoters. Â
Just got back from tonight's event, promoted by The Specialists. Â Â 80's and 90's hip-hop. Â Â I'm loving it! Â Â It brings back B-Boy memories
You know how it is when you haven't gone out in a Long time and so you are craving the night life? Like anything will do. Then you step into the old time venue in Hollywood that has been around forever to go meet your friends and listen to this really wild band play very loud music. Well, this was my night. But it was fun!
Boardners is a cool place and if you haven't been there before, or it's been a long time, I highly suggest you go check it out again. It looks kind of old and Gothic inside with this fountain inlayed with a candelabra filled with creme colored dripping candles in the middle of the bar where they play music. Â Here's a pic:

There's of course a bar and the standard drinks. Â I ordered a dark rum and diet coke, then a bud lite to start it off right. Ballerina Black, Plastic Dog, Â and The Jim Homeless Experience was playing tonight...trippy. The guy looked, well I've included some pictures. But the real treat of the evening was the War Lords of Rock N Roll Thunder Lightning! When I say the lead singer had hella energy I mean he was on fi-re.
I had my crappy. little phone camera with me against better judgment and went up to take some photos and the energy up there was outrageous. Seems the band has some groupies that resemble mosh pit Masai that continually bounce up and down. It's really fun to be up there. You got to check this band out sometime. Â As for the venue itself, it's very old and worth a look.
Here are some pics of the evening:

The following interaction took place at approximately 10:00 PM on a Saturday night in the women's restroom of a bar in Hollywood...
In the midst of getting trashed on $9 Jack and Diets, I had retired to the restroom to give myself an injection of glatiramer acetate, the disease-modifying medication I take for multiple sclerosis. While emptying my syringe kit on the bathroom counter, a plastic LA La Land girl burst out of one of the bathroom stalls in hysterics. She stopped at the sink next to me, blew her nose, fussed with her eye makeup, and then to my horror, began to TALK TO ME.
"Life sucks. Men suck. I cannot believe this. Can you believe this? I have to compete with porn stars for his attention. It's so unfair."
Um, HA HA HA HA HA. Get a grip, chica. Why are you people in this town so fxxxing WARPED?
"Well, actually," I said, "your life could be a hell of a lot worse."
"Oh, reeeally?" said stupid plastic bitch.
"Yes, really." I finished prepping the needle, popped the cap off, tucked my shirt into my bra, and aimed it at my stomach.
"You could be in this bathroom, shooting up with medication just to keep yourself from ending up blind and back in a wheelchair again."
And I stabbed the needle right into my stomach, and turned to her with a huge grin on my face, just for effect.
"Uh, I hardly think that's worse," she said, and walked out.
BITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope your boyfriend fxxxs an army of porn stars in front of your face.
Now, this did NOT happen at Boardner's. This happened earlier in the evening at The Room, another Hollywood bar otherwise so utterly forgettable that I'm not even going to yelp it. But I'm yelping Boardner's, and I'm putting the story here, because it DIDN'T happen here. Boardner's was, for the most part, void of "those" types of LA people. Like the bitch. I HATE those types of LA people. I dislike LA on a broad scale because of those people, and Boardner's -- while being far from a great bar -- was in comparison to most bars in LA, well... Okay. Not bad.
Because it wasn't overrun with THEM.
I could go to the bathroom there in peace.
Also, a Jack and Diet at Boardner's was $7. Which is approximately twice the price of a cocktail at the 540. Which seems like a damn good deal in the ratio of SF - to - LA drink prices.
And, they have Pixies in the jukebox. They don't LOOK like they have any right to be playing the Pixies, but they have them, nonetheless.
Rock on, plastic people.
This is a review for club moscow:
If I had known that club moscow was.....well what it is, I would have tried to cover as much as my eyes as possible with my hair and wear skin tight jeans.
Let me just say that I've already been to Moscow. I've already been to Moscow. I've already been to Moscow, after 5 minutes I was like "lets go". Well, okay maybe two hours but still.
The music was terrible, it sounded like somebody was dropping spoons or some other sort of metallic object. I guess I'm just not into that scene. I tried it once. Did.Not.Work. Um, I felt like I was a robot about 93% of the time, because it was all techno. Doing the robot got really old really fast. The bathroom was TINY and had a huge line outside it, and, seeing as I wasn't robotically prepared for this, I almost wet myself in the not so good way.
However, the decor was nice. It reminded me of death and razorblades, two things I find the most comfort in. Haha, i'm kidding. But it WAS pretty cool. I really liked the redness of it all, the adams familyness. It was an okay environment.
I probably won't be back, and I'll stick to the chonga music because I can shake my ass better to it.
For some reason, I end up here on a fairly regular basis. Â Actually, the reason is straightforward. One of my friends lives around the corner from the place and thus lobbies successfully for us to head here. Â
I can't say that I hate it, but I'm not sure why anyone would ever go here, either. Â The food, at least the bar food, blows. Â The chips are soggy, the fries over-seasoned (and this coming from a girl who eats garlic like apples), the spinach dip lacks flavor.
Plus, they don't have any beer on tap. Â And, on more than one occasion, they've run out of cold Fat Tire. Â What?! Â I've never had a bar tell me they've run out of cold anything before, much less tell me twice. Â
I guess the thing to do is order cocktails, because their wines are none-too-tasty, but it's in Hollywood, I live in West LA and cocktails mean I've got to find a friend to cuddle with on the street because there's no way I'm getting home after more than a couple. Â
However, one of the bartenders grew up in the small Illinois town I went to college in. Â I found this out because the bartenders are friendly and more charming than most, although that hardly makes up for the fact that they can't keep Fat Tires cold.
