So far I have tried the chicken curry, lamb vindaloo and the garlic naan. The food is decent, but I would advise staying away from this place for dinner. Usually, when a certain menu item is higher priced, one expects either a larger portion and/or extra side dishes that tag along with it. I understand the dinner menu, without a doubt, should be more expensive than the lunch menu in every restaurant.
However, when the lunch menu (~$8-$9) comes with a vegetable samosa and some lettuce on the side and the dinner menu (~$11-$13) comes with LESS rice (they charge $1.99 for more rice), that's when you know something is wrong. It's like paying $1 for a 500ml gatorade, but $2.50 for a 1 liter one. It just simply does not make sense.
4 stars for lunch and 2 stars for dinner. The average? 3 stars. Can we rate a restaurant 3 stars on Yelp? Yes. Done.
Of the 2 options in Evanston, i will say this is definitely 2nd. The place is small and I usually just do a pick up from them. Its economical as they give rice with the entree.
If i was planing to sit and eat, I prefer to go to MtEverest as they also have Buffet during lunch.
Food is good, no complaints. Â If it was much cheaper than mt Everest, may be I would have gone more often. Its roughly 10$ entree.
Again, good for pickups (as rice comes free)
the food is great and inexpensive but the service is lacking and lies. i ordered on grub hub and everything was perfect about my order except i got a sprite instead of an orange soda. simple mistake i thought. so i called the restaurant. i was informed that they were out of orange soda and that they had called grub hub and got no response so just sent the sprite. i was informed i would be sent a driver the next day at any time to refund me for the mistake. i called grub hub. the nice lady who answered informed me that the restaurant had never called them about being out of the item. i had been lied to. she called the restaurant and they sent a driver immediately to refund me. she informed me that the manager of the restaurant was no cooperative and tried to tell her they were closed already when it was not 10pm yet. inexcusable in my opinion.
Review Source:I love Indian, and my partner does not. Â Turns out Bombay is so delicious (and affordable) that we both love it. Â It's also in a very convenient location in downtown Evanston. Â Â What else can you ask for?
Thanks, Bombay/Mumbai. Â We'll be back soon!
Also--we ordered delivery through GrubHub. Â It arrived hot within 25 minutes of completing our online order. Â Yum!
They have changed their name to Mumbai Indian Grill and this is easily some of the best Indian food I have ever had in my life. I'm not sure if it's under new management or what but my goodness is this food to die for. I've eaten at countless Indian establishments and grown up with homemade Indian food and this is among the best.
Review Source:Ordered a shrimp vindaloo dish, which was absolutely delicious! The menu said it would be spicy, and it really did have a kick (that's a big plus in my book... usually when restaurants say dishes are spicy, they aren't at all).
I felt that for the amount of money I paid, the portion was a bit on the smaller side, but overall a great experience.
Spices must've been strong because I left with a burning stomach for a few hours afterwards.. but worth it!
This place is the perfect lunch place. It's quick, it's delicious, and it's cheap! The staff is friendly and very laid back. It's a small place but very comfortable. We are regulars here and can recommend the Aloo Sag and Chicken Korma.
The serving portions are good for both lunch and dinner and our check never goes over $25 bucks for 2 (w/o drinks)
Food tastes more authentic to Mt. Everest (the other Indian restaurant in Evanston) and a lot friendlier to your wallet.
Things were ok, until they didn't accept our paid <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Frestaurant.com&s=c5fe485af4df376130bee54f875814d79c4d7913e1258123b1206d2bdbf4873b" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://restaurant.com</a> coupon. I had seen on Yelp that others had this problem too, so I called ahead. Over the phone, they said they'd accept it. However, when time to pay the bill, was told by the owner that they weren't a part of <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Frest.com&s=18415964453fc973fa38c45fbbdb82f29961cc0a5f69f07ee11f91e882801d2c" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://rest.com</a> anymore. I explained that ours was bought in Dec., 2011, and felt that they should honor it since it hadn't been a year yet. Owner wouldn't budge, saying it was 2012 now (like the coupon was only valid for that month). Â I find it ridiculous that he wouldn't honor what he had signed up for, and risk a bad review and lost business. Well, I'll never patronize a place that has no honor again.
Review Source:We've been here twice. Â This first time was fine, though the food was more bland than we are used to with Indian food.
The second time we presented a <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Frestaurant.com&s=c5fe485af4df376130bee54f875814d79c4d7913e1258123b1206d2bdbf4873b" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://restaurant.com</a> gift certificate and were told that they no longer accept them despite the words "This gift certificate does not expire" right on the gift certificate.
At the time, we did not argue (we were on a rare marital date). Â I called them later, though, to ask why they did not accept the coupon and the manager repeated over and over that they simply stopped accepting them. Â I argued that the certificate says it does not expire and he countered with, "But we don't accept them!" Â ARGH!!!!!!
They have lost a customer over this.
I live in Rogers Park and I love Indian food, but after many years of patronage I never, ever go to Devon anymore because it is consistently disgustingly dirty, even the fancy places are sloppy (one gave me someone else's doggy bag from another table, I discovered when I got home, UGH! Â And when I called to let them know, they suggested I was just trying to get a free meal) (*cough* Tiffin *cough*), and there are rats all over the neighborhood and my son got food poisoning twice at two different restaurants. Â I have no idea why the Board of Health is not all over that unholy stretch on Devon, it's like eating on top of a trash heap from Slumdog Millionaire. Â So gross, and probably wrecks it for the reputable, non-filthy businesses there, which I assume exist but I no longer have the wherewithall to try to discover. Â Clean it up, guys! Â That said, Indian food is beautiful and delicious and inimitable, and I have gone too long without anywhere nearby to go that I can trust not to kill me. Â So I was excited/scared to try this place in Evanston, away from Devon's unsanitary horde.
Thank you, Mumbai Grill, for having a tasty lunch just as delicious as anything I'd get on Devon but without the inherent death threat; for being CLEAN with nice CLEAN fresh paper tablecloths and a reasonably CLEAN vacuumed floor and furniture that does not look like it was rescued from the Titanic and practically still has barnacles on it (yeah, I'm talking about you, Viceroy of India); for the flavorful but not-too-spicy chicken makhani, saag paneer, chickpeas, samosas, naan, tandoori, all very solidly prepared, fragrant and good; for adding the pakoras on the lunch plate, nice touch; for fun dining music; for being a great deal for an $8 lunch with plenty of food; for cordial service and conscientious water refills; and for being CLEAN. Â Fresher than Evanston's Mount Everest's buffet, I think, and less surly. Â They maybe could use a little more ventilation or an air purifier, it was a little smoky inside from cooking, but it was minor. Â Very nice, relaxing and very, very yummy. Â And, uh, CLEAN. Â Thank you! Â We'll be back.
Mumbai grill now...We ordered takeout from here for the first time tonight and... Wow! Â Yummmmm! Â The spices were right on with the Kuchumbar salad. Â The garlic naan was lovely and the chicken tikka masala was just right. Â The chicken saag was also scrumptious. Â Prices were good, too. Â Definitely will do this again.
Review Source:I've been here before, and I will be here again. They deliver, and I will order here again.
With the original Bombay Kebab now out of business, Mumbai Indian Grill (formerly Bombay) has replaced the gap, both spiritually, flavor wise, and almost name wise.
What makes me happy with their food is not only that it's truly pretty spicy (Kali Dal will make you sweat a little), but also that it's a: consistently good, b: vegetarian friendly, and c: a small location. So a sit in is going to be very quick, very personalized.
They make a spicy salad with cumin and it is basically delicious, outright. You also get a huge amount of it for the appetizer cost. We make a similar dish at home replacing the lettuce with tomatoes and avocado, and I could eat this every single day.
Then we get to the food itself, Kali Dal, Paneers, Sags, all the good stuff - they are well made. I should note the Tandoori vegetables are unique here, and explicitly amazing. It is a "must try".
I came here with a large group on one of the busiest nights (for some unknown reason) I've seen at a restaurant in Evanston.
The ambiance:
It's really small. My group was 11 people; there was another table near the window with about 10, and maybe 5 other tables seating 2. If you've seen the interior, you can picture how cramped we were. This definitely isn't something I hold against them; I'm happy they were able to accommodate us. The environment is really lax -- definitely not somewhere I'd go for anything intimate (like, I don't know -- a date?), but it seems perfectly suited for friends to have a talk here.
The food:
I wasn't really a fan. I ordered the Lamb Madras Curry. It was spicy, which I liked, but it lacked a lot of flavor. It wasn't really savory to my tongue (a few others agreed with me), and the lamb wasn't seasoned thoroughly either. I did have ample rice and na'an to help by using them as vehicles, but I just wasn't having it. At least the $10 price tag isn't too too bad for what I got.
The service:
I actually gave them 3 (instead of 2) stars because the service here was exceptional given the busy night. My water was always filled. They split checks for us. Overall, they did a great job tending to us.
TL;DR. Don't bring a date here. My food is bland. Decent value. Good service.
I'll give them another shot sometime and order something else.
If you are craving great North Indian food, please don't go here. The food was tangy, not spicy and just not good. We got 2 veggie shabjis and both were literally made with the same gravy! I was really disappointed, since this used to be one of our favorite joints in undergrad at U oF I. The only thing I liked was the garlic naan. I would recommend going to Mt. Everest over this place in Evanston.
Review Source:First, this place has changed their name to Mumbai Indian Grill, which makes me chuckle.
Second, they are closed in the middle of the day but they don't lock their doors and, even more annoying, look at you like you've just landed from Mars when you come in and ask for a table. Â When you politely point out that they should consider locking their door when they are closed, they will make nonsensical excuses. Â And when you point out that the posted hours indicate "Monday-Thursday 11:30am-10:00pm" they will in turn point out that underneath the several lines of hours is a final line reading "Closed Daily 2:30-5:00." Â This last line of text is painted in the same color as the wall behind the door (not white like the other lines) and is down at the bottom, partially obscured by the push bar on the door. Â So what do they expect to happen when someone walks by at 3:30pm on a Monday and the top line of the printed hours says "Monday-Thursday 11:30am-10:00pm"? Â Why wouldn't they just write "Monday-Thursday 11:30am-2:30pm and 5pm-10pm"?? Â And why insist on defending this stupidity when a customer brings it to their attention? Â
Lame. Â Not only did they lose my lunch business today by not being open in the mid-afternoon, they lost my future business through stubbornness and lack of common sense.
Came here about a year ago on an awkward lunch date, didn't like the food (or maybe I didn't like the awkward date). Came again a few weeks ago and it was much, much better. I'm not sure if it's cause they improved their recipe or if I was in the company of people I like. I got the chicken makhani which is my favorite, and it didn't dissapoint.
I came here again recently with two friends, and we all got chicken with tomato-based sauces, so I dipped my spoon in their sauce for a taste test. Everything tasted pretty similar -- maybe one was a little saltier, one was creamier, and one was thicker, but the differences ended there. I don't blame this place for it though because it's pretty characteristic of Indian food as a whole (maybe I'm ignorant) and I found this pretty funny.
It's comparable to Mount Everest except the prices are a little cheaper. The garlic naan is amazing and I was pretty sad when I finished my piece.
I'd much rather just go to Mt. Everest around the corner.
Issue 1: we ordered naan, never got it, but were charged for it
Issue 2. Â I ordered a spicy dish and requested it indeed be prepared with medium heat. Â The waiter wrote down mild. Â The dish had less heat than the mild dishes we ordered. Â Chicken Tikka Masala shouldn't be spicier than dished designated as "spicy"... Â
Other than that, the food was fine. I've definitely had better.
Is this a hidden gem or what? Delicious food with friendly service!
We stumbled upon this place while meandering around Evanston. We'll definitely be coming here more often. The naan was fresh and crispy and just perfect to sop up the tomato paneer dish we had. Add some tangy creamy raita and that was a full meal.
Dreamy place on the cheap for delicious Indian food.
My coworkers and I come here minimally once a week for lunch. Only one of us is pregnant; I don't know what the rest of us can blame our addiction on other than great Indian food at a great price.
I'm pretty addicted to the chicken paneer and the mahkni masala. The chicken they use is incredibly moist white meat - very rarely have I gotten any dark meat in my dish. The only thing I don't like is that you can only either get naan or rice with the lunch special, you can't get both. And they give you an obscene amount of either (picky, but I'd love to be able to have half of each. Alas).
The dining room is no frills and the chairs and tables are small. You'll get over it quickly, though, because the food is so delicious.
Occupying the old Dunkin' Donuts space next to Crossroads is Bombay Indian Grill. My boyfriend and I came here on the whim because we were in the area, hungry for Indian food, and didn't feel like heading out to Devon.
Portions are plentiful! Overall things felt a little under-seasoned and lacked that "kick" you get from most Indian cuisine but you at least won't leave Bombay hungry. The bowls are filled to the brim. We ended up needing to take some of the food home but we left fully satisfied. The naan is more light and airy than I'm used to but is enough to scoop up what you need. And the best part, you will not get a dinky 5 oz. cup of mango lassi here. Nope nope nope. It's a ginormous glass of mango sweetshock!
Due to our excitement and enthusiasm, it must've completely slipped our minds that 90% of Indian restaurants are closed between the hours of 3 and 5. Their lunch ends at 2:30pm. We ordered around 2:25 and at that point we didn't even know that lunch was wrapping up. We only took notice after the food was brought out and no other customers were left except us. Our server came over and explained that he and his co-workers were going to have a bite to eat but if we needed to bug them for anything it was okay. Oh, we felt horrible! But we were extremely relieved that he and the rest of the staff there didn't try to rush us out or treat us like dirt. (Thank you!)
Four stars got bumped up to five because this place deserves more credit than it's getting! Â I've eaten here four times now and was shocked to see only 3 stars when I looked it up to call in an order tonight. Â After feeling sluggish and disgusting every time after eating at Mt. Everest, Bombay Grill is clearly the superior choice.
Food is lighter, less greasy, and I personally think more authentic on the Indian side (after two weeks in India). Â This is also Evanston, so any place that gives me better quality for a very slightly higher price is fine with me as long as I can eat without feeling like I just ingested a pound of butter later. Â Saag is good and doesn't taste like a cup of cream, dal makhani is pretty good, and the standard chicken and lamb curries are good as well. Â We don't need ten pounds of meat if it's better meat either - quality over quantity.
Also, I think the ambiance is what you'd expect for a casual dinner. Â Service is very attentive and the take out is fast, too. Â Try it!
I really was not a fan of the food here - I used to live in Evanston for a while and am still ye faithful to Mt Everest.
There was one review that compared prices and said this was a lot cheaper -- I'm not sure that's accurate because each vegetarian entree here was either $9 or $11.
The service is extremely slow and the tables are very tightly fit together.
But most importantly, the food just didn't taste that great! The rice and chana were a little undercooked, the paneer had little paneer and too much gravy/curry in it. All the items were bland and there was no kick/spiciness to the food.
I've been wanting to see how they managed to turn a Dunkin Donuts into a sit down restaurant. Â And they somehow have!
The waitress was a bit odd but nice however the food was pretty good. Â We tried both the samosa and the chicken samosa which were both pretty filling and tasty. Â We ordered the chicken makhani, chicken saag wala and chicken malai which comes with a complimentary two pieces of gobi pakora (fried vegetable), small salad and naan or rice. Â Overall, the food was pretty good and portions were generous. Â We'll definitely be back again!
Let me start by saying that this restaurant is small. When I say small, I mean we walked in and there was no place to stand and wait, and almost every table was filled. Fortunately, it was only almost every table, and we were seated right away (had every table been filled, we would likely have gone to another restaurant, which would have been a shame). On the other hand, busy is always a good sign for a restaurant.
For lunch, they offer your choice of entree served with two pieces of gobi pakora, a small salad and your choice of naan or rice. I ordered the shahi paneer, cubes of a creamy white cheese in a warm, seasoned, creamy tomato broth and selected the naan. The gobi pakora are a cauliflower paste formed into discs that are battered and fried. I didn't know what to expect, but it's safe to say that they exceeded my expectations. As did my entree. And the naan was huge, eclipsing the plate that everything was served on, warm and delicious. In fact, with the exception of the salad that seemed to be tacked on to make it a lunch special, everything was delicious.
Based on my experience, I am surprised to see such low ratings on Yelp. Admitted, I'm not a connoisseur of Indian cuisine, and I've yet to explore the finer restaurants on Devon, but the food was quite good. So was the service. Portions were just about perfect, and the prices were on par with other Evanston lunch options. I hesitate to give it five stars, as this is not my new favorite lunch destination, but it earned a solid four stars.
At first I thought, "This place has potential but just needs lots of work." Â Unfortunately it doesn't even matter, because I won't be back.
Service: Attentive and prompt, no complaints whatsoever.
The order: lamb saag lunch special, which comes with salad, two pieces of veggie pakora, and a choice of rice or naan.
Food: The "salad" is a small pile of red and green lettuce with no dressing, and they'd might as well get rid of it. The pakoras were greasy and bland, also not worth it. The lamb saag was surprisingly flavorful and enjoyable, and the portion was large enough for two meals.
*However*, when I enjoyed my leftovers tonight, I found a gigantic stick of...well, I have no idea what it is. It looks like a cinnamon stick on steroids, but it doesn't really matter, because it's disgusting. I wish I still lived up in Evanston so I could take it in and complain...instead I just won't be back.
This review is based on carry-out for a school group meeting - I'll update once I get a chance to eat-in. Â We ordered a variety of dishes to share between 5 people. Â Vegetarian, lamb, and chicken. Â Samosas were flavorful. Â
The palak paneer (spinach & cheese) was just ok, a little bland, but it's spinach. Â Dal makhani was not the best I've ever had, but was pretty darn good. Â The carnivores liked the lamb vindaloo. Â All dishes came with plenty of rice, and one large piece of naan for all of us -- not nearly enough. Â
Bottom line, for carryout/group catering in Evanston this may be your new best bet. Â If you have the time, hop on the bus and head down to Devon.
For someone from Pakistan who has tasted real Pakistani/Indian food this place was kind of a disappointment
The Biryani was very bland, like colored rice and chicken. I would not recommend it.
The curry's are closer to real Indian food but lack the kick that comes from the chilli and garam masala spices in authentic Indian food.
This food is still far from authentic but they have the potential to make it better.
Pretty good -- you can tell they're still ironing out some kinks (I appreciate the attention, Mr. Busboy, I do, but you don't have to refill my glass to the top after I've had one sip). Wait staff still a bit green, but thats all fine, completely understandable for a new restaurant.
The food was better than I expected -- Lassi was deliciously tangy, rice was well flavored, and the sauces were excellent. The lamb in the lamb curry was a bit on the tough side, but the flavorful sauce made up for it. The garlic naan was above average but not the best I've had (could have been a bit crispier).
Overall, very good. One more thing -- if the owner is reading this -- turn down the lights a bit. It's pretty bright in there.
I visited the apparently new Bombay Indian Grill on a chilly May Saturday. Â Comments:
* It's conveniently located in downtown Evanston.
* Prices are very reasonable. Â For example, vegetarian entries are $6. Â That would be below-average on Chicago's Devon Avenue, which is notable when Evanston's general priciness is considered.
* My dish (vegetables in curry sauce) was unremarkable. Â Except for maybe for the sauce, which had great flavor...
* Service was good, especially for a new place that's probably still ironing out some wrinkles...
