I only recently discovered Caddy Shack after living here 5 plus years.  A good dive bar  that seems relatively clean and serves one of a kind pizza.  Yes, Please.  Our service was prompt and friendly the entire time afternoon as we watched many basketball games.  The pizza!  The sweet sauce!  I haven't tasted anything like that before and it was a welcome palate pleaser.
Review Source:Is Caddy Shack the perfect dive bar?
Dark, low ceilings, paneling from the 1970s-check.
Music from KY102's 1978 playlist-yep.
Friendly bartenders-oh yeah.
Lots of regulars who all know each other-uh-huh.
Short drive home-praise the Lord.
Great pizza-whuuutt? YESSSS!
I cannot say enough good things about the sauce on this pizza. Yes, it's sweet. But it's the perfect foil for the heat that's there too, which seems to be hard to come by these days. I remember when pizza was considered spicy food, but not so much these days. Â So this sauce was amazing! The crust is thin but not brittle, topped with plenty of meat and veggies, without being overburdened with cheese. They will add Provel cheese for $1 extra, but we played it straight this time. The sandwich menu is for another visit, as is the fried potato salad, which I've only ever seen in Sedalia before last night (it's wonderful!)
Our bartender did double duty waiting tables, and was great. This is KCMO, so seeing a guy at the end of the bar smoking a cigarette caused me to wonder, until he came over and asked how everything was, and I realized he was probably an owner. This was my first visit, but the camaraderie among staff and patrons is palpable. The place was full early on a Friday evening, and we had the misfortune of sitting right inside the front door for awhile on a miserably cold, wet evening. But the barkeep/waiter cleaned off another table for us as soon as it came open. Â There's a good size patio off to the side of the building, and I'd love to try it out, if spring/summer EVER gets here!
Ahhh Caddy Shack! Â You know, I'm constantly being razzed on the fact that I have never seen almost any movie that may be referenced in conversation, and Caddy Shack is no exception. Â But what I have enjoyed on many occasion is there pizza! Â
Now, there are a few quirks to this place that you have to learn to love...like the fact that the person taking your delivery order may or may not know the months of the year. Â Just help them out where needed and soon enough you will have a super meal walked right up to your door. Â My personal favorite is their pizza, really any of them I have tried. Â They have a great sweet and spicy sauce that make all of the chain joints around town seem like their junk comes from a jar. Â The fried ravioli are best fresh, but not on my highly recommended list. Â The mozzarella sticks are the perfect way to indulge before you indulge. Â
Another excellent point, especially if you live in the Market area, their delivery is stupid quick.  Of course you can't expect miracles; if you call during the diner hour on a Friday night you will have to wait a bit longer...but if you call on a random week night  or any late night, that pie will be to your door fast!  They do not mess around with their estimated times.  If they tell me 30 to 40 minutes, I'm make sure not to be otherwise disposed of after 25, because they will be there when they say.
You may have noticed that this review is a tad one sided, as in just about delivery. Â That is because the only times I have been to this little dive bar in person has been on New Year's, and I don't think anyone deserves to be judged on that night. Â I have heard great things and I'm sure will make it in. Â I have however ordered their pizza probably 1.4 million times, so I feel pretty good writing up a review for that!
Cheers!
You know, seeing my review show up at the ROTD was a quick reminder that I really needed to update it.
We have completely become regulars around here. Â And it's certainly not our neighborhood, but it's worth the 10 minute drive to come up and chill out where, as the song says, everyone knows your name. Â The waitresses will meet us with our regular drinks in hand when we walk in. Â
We have gotten used to the sweet pizza sauce and have found that the perfect pizza style to go with it is a supreme... the veggies go with the sauce much better than just a plate of meat. Â They have a new cheese option for the pizza- the provel. Â It's very, very decadent and not for the faint of heart. Â It's very good, but we can't order it too often. Â The rest of the bar food is all pretty tasty too, as we have pretty much worked through the entire menu now. Â (Though, be warned, about the only thing to tread lightly on is the Philly, which is salty enough to raise your blood pressure just sniffing it)
We're up here at least weekly now, and it's not likely that is going to change any time soon.
By far, the best pizza in Kansas City. When you walk in, or even drive up to the place, you may be a little sketched out, but don't worry. I've gone there many times. You walk in and seat yourself, and soon a waitress will approach you. Our waitress has been the same person every time, and she's pretty awesome. I think she's the bartender as well, but is always on top of drinks and anything we need. They have pool tables, TV's, music, and a patio. But the thing that makes me come back for more is the pizza. Oh man, the sauce they have on there is incredible, sweet and spicy greatness.
Review Source:Somehow I have been completely oblivious to the existence of this place. I had heard the name mentioned here or there in a dive bar context, but I had no idea they had food, let alone great pizza. And I definitely didn't realize it was a mere 5 minutes away from my house. I actually only came across it at all because I googled for "pizza near [my zip code]" and Caddy Shack came up.
"Huh," I thought, "I'll call in a carryout order and give it a shot."
Turns out, the pizza is really tasty. The sauce is weirdly sweet and has a bit of heat to it, which I found odd yet somehow quite good. If I had a choice between this sauce and something less sweet, I'd go with the less sweet, but it's not bad. Just not perfect. Â
Toppings are generous, including what appears to be and tastes like cheddar cheese. I was surprised to see that, but it tastes good.
The real star of the show (as should be the case with all pizza, in my opinion) is the crust. It's very nearly St. Louis-style thin, all crispy edges and chewy in the middle, yet manages to maintain its integrity without getting soggy, unlike many similarly thin alternatives.
As others have mentioned, it's a total dive in a relatively deserted part of Columbus Park. I figure that makes it all the more charming, but your mileage may vary.
This is a total dive bar, that happens to have great pizza. I'd imagine if I came here at 10am for a slice and beer I wouldn't be the first customer. I'd imagine if I was a cop, this would be a perfect place to bust the chronically drunk with a DWI, assuming they ever leave.
Back to the pizza, if you like a sweet sauce Caddy Shack is a must. My only complaint with this thin crust masterpiece is that it lacks the crust-handle typically associated with a slice of pizza. That can make for a messy dining experience, but after all, at Caddy Shack you only fit in if you have sauce all over your face, hands, and shirt.
Tip: Don't bet on billiards, as the regulars here will destroy you.
I have lived in this city for 1.5 years and am ashamed of myself for only discovering this place recently. Â I have always loathed 90% of the pizza in KC and the places I have liked wouldn't even deliver downtown. Â Caddy Shack is righteous. Â They call their pizza a "sicilian" style thin crust, but if you are familiar with St Louis style, you wil feel at home (although it doesn't have provel cheese). Â The sauce is very sweet and delicious, I could eat that alone! Â The pizza also comes sprinkled with parmesan cheese. Â Although this is a dive bar/restaurant, you can tell that a lot of love was used to build your pizza.
Review Source:This is my favorite pizza in KC. The sauce is very unique and full of flavor. It is more of a sweeter tomato sauce, but you can taste the italian seasoning in it. The crust is crispy and can be made any way you like it. The best part is that they are open late, so I can get a pizza on my way home from a night on the town.
Review Source:Such good pizza. Delivery in downtown. YES.  Slightly sweet, really great tomato power behind this stuff. Thin crust. Seasoned well. You'll never need to order delivery  pizza from anywhere else.  I'd love to know the story behind of Moretina's Family pizza... but maybe i shouldn't ask. This is the River Market/Columbus Park.... :)
Besides all that, it's just a chill dive bar. Jukebox, cheap drinks and a patio.
What brings me back to the Shack? Â Is it the pizza? Is it the beer? Is it the sports on TV during a lazy Sunday afternoon? Â Yup, yup and yup! Â It's all these things ... combined with a relaxed vibe, friendly staff and a completely unpretentious crowd.
I have been a fan of Caddy Shack since the first Sunday I wandered in this past spring. Â It was actually my second visit to Caddy Shack; the first was about a year earlier when I stopped in only for a beer and smelled, but did not sample, their amazing homemade pizza. Â But on this visit I was there to watch some Royals on the TV and try this pizza that I'd heard so much about. Â It did not disappoint!
I can't really say what it is about the pizza at Caddy Shack that I love so much. Â It's not fancy, trendy or on the cutting edge of culinary history ... it's just really good mother f'ing pizza! Â It's the kind of pizza I used to eat as a kid ... way back in the early 80's ... you know, when Pac Man was the shit. Â Combine that pizza with a cold pitcher (or two) of Miller Lite and it's a meal meant for a ... well, a Sunday, and to me there's not much better.
Behold: The Caddy Shack! The official dive bar of the River Market and Columbus Park!
This place is pretty dang great. Cheap drinks, friendly bar staff, and good music. It has a nice enough patio, and the people are generally pretty cool, from all walks of life. If you are nearby and want a dive, this is the place to go.
But there's more! The Caddy Shack makes an awesome pizza that they now deliver to the River Market and surrounding areas! That's right, finally there is a non Pizza Hut or MInsky's option for pizza in the neighborhood. I'd say price wise its somewhere in between the other two options, but leaps and bounds tastier than both.
The sauce is sweet, and the crust is thin (though not cracker thin). They cut it into squares for some reason, but it works out just fine. Plenty of topping options. Check their website for a coupon on delivery. They also deliver a few sandwiches and sides, none of which I've tried.
Delivery times are quick, and the employees are friendly. I am so very, very glad to have Caddy Shack in the neighborhood!
The Caddyshack is an institution in the Rivermarket/ Columbus Park neighborhoods. This place is a locals spot, very rarely do you see out of towners here because honestly it can be a little intimidating the first time you go in, rest assured everyone here is great!
Caddyshack is a haven for late night eats and drinks for restaurant and other service industry professionals. Drinks are strong and the beer is cold. This place doesn't stray very far from popular American beers. Don't go here if you want an IPA or microbrew, they don't stock any. Beer on draft is Miller Lite, Bud Light, and PBR by the pitcher or pint.
The pizza is extremely popular, thin crust, sweet red sauce, and your choice of toppings. Priced right and served right out of the oven.
Drink prices are a little high for the area but like I said they are strong so you know you are getting your moneys worth.
Always someone on the pool table and the jukebox has some good tunes as well. The patio is huge and has plenty of seating.
I wasn't sure what to think the first time I walked in, but this place has definitely grown on me. Â
One thing to like, especially if you live downtown, is the ample street parking. Â Another thing to like is their pizza- its quite good, and it always seems to be a special when we are there. Â The bartenders are friendly, and there is a nice customer mix. Â
The atmosphere is absolutely dive bar, which is just appreciated sometimes. Â The jukebox is fun...except that day someone decided to play every Boys II Men single ever (and believe me, there where more than you remember) but I believe that was an anomaly and overall this is a great chill place to go.
If the music had been 867-5309 and I had a little pitcher of Dr. Pepper instead of the classic rock Sirius station playing and having a Miller Lite draw, I would have thought I was 10 and eating at Pizza Place in Leavenworth circa 1984.
Yes Caddy Shack is a bar but I was there for the pizza. It was that GOOD to send me back to my alleged awesomeness of 1984. Â I am so glad I didn't write off Caddy Shack from my first impression visit about a year ago. My first visit was meh at best but....this time we ordered a pizza in addition to beer. The pizza didn't disappoint. The sauce was sweet, like spaghetti sauce, but offset the supreme toppings of red onion, green pepper, pepperoni and Italian sausage perfectly. The crust was thin and crispy. I have to say, the pizza is a winner for sure.
Caddy Shack has daily Happy Hour specials and game time specials. Â I think, regardless of their game time specials, you will find me there watching a game, eating pizza and remembering a time when Reagan was president, we were all worried about the Russians, Duran Duran and "Jenny" ruled the juke box and Mary Lou Retton kicked ass in the summer Olympics.
I've got a new favorite bar in town and it's name is the Caddy Shack! This place has it all: old school jukebox, great porch, mismatched tables and chairs, awesome bartenders and waitresses that pour an honest drink. Some of the best pizza I've had in awhile, also.
Met here on a Thursday night for my buddy Bill Murray's birthday. It seemed appropriate to have birthday drinks with Bill Murray at the Caddy Shack.
Had the best time. I'll be going back soon!
The location and appearance of Caddy Shack probably keep most timid bar-goers away, but it's worth giving this place a shot.
We went around 6-7pm on a Saturday. Most of the regulars were bellied up to the bar, but the table seating was aplenty. Had to order from the bar (NBD), but I did have to wait 4-5 minutes. I don't know if she just didnt see me (I was the only one standing and waiting), or if it's bar policy to not serve the regulars for a few minutes. Beer prices were pretty decent ($10 domestic pitchers on a Saturday). Service after that was average, I didnt have to wait the next few trips.
Our pizza was a bit overcooked, but it was still pretty good. I'm hoping on my return visit it will be properly cooked, as the ingredients and pizza itself were pretty solid for a "dive bar." They had a $4 off special, so I think the pizza was only $10.
My experience wasn't the greatest, but I think I may have caught them on an off night, so I'll give them another shot and update my stars as needed. (I think they have 4 star potential)
Day two of the vegetarian challenge and I'm quickly establishing a pattern: there is no compromise giving up meat when there is pizza in the world. And folks, that's why you go to Caddy Shack. If you happen upon Caddy Shack in the 12th hour of a dive bar pub crawl, immediately after eating a buffet dinner and getting dessert even though you were full, you still owe it to yourself to eat the pizza. For bar pizza, it is transcendent.
What warrants such hyperbole? Well, most important for me is the crust. It cheats physics in that it is always crispy, with a satisfying snap when you bite into it, but without being dry and cracker-like. It still gives you a chewy, bready experience after that first bite. The sauce has a zesty sweetness that is a little different and a lot tasty.
What's the vegetarian angle? Well, they've got a veggie combo as a standard issue choice, with green peppers, onions and black olives. I suspect the ingredients came from a can, but at that point, the texture of the veggies and what flavor they are packing is the perfect compliment to the crispy crust and tasty sauce.
On Monday, you get a large pizza for small price!
The bar itself is a typical dive, with a bit of a rougher crowd, a few drunk older dudes and a random table or two of younger groups. There are three or four yellow beers on tap, including Bud Light and PBR, and the bottles are limited too. If you're a beer lover, Boulevard Pale Ale is the best you're going to get.
This isn't a big space, but the patio is bigger and great for nice days. It doesn't have the same charm as when it was just the empty lot out back with a fence around it, but it'll do. I've never felt uncomfortable here, and the drunks are usually friendly drunks, but it isn't somewhere I'd go without a friend or two just for the ensured conversation.
Unless I just needed some pizza, of course. Then I totally would.
This is a decent dive bar with a kitchen open late night (the main reason we went). The crowd feels a bit "towney," and if I weren't with a group of friends, I might have felt out of place or overdressed (save for the random guy in a suit). When we got there, there was an altercation between a couple guys at the pool table. We sought safety out back in the patio.
The patio is awesome. Huge, with a couple heaters out there. I could definitely see how that could be a really good time in the warmer months.
We ended up back inside and ordered a pitcher and some food. Bud light pitcher was cheap. While we were waiting, we snacked on some of the free popcorn (not good, and needs salt) and dodged some pool sticks (I got the feeling that those guys didn't give a shit if they hit you with their stick, get out of the way and don't fuck with their shots...).
Food come out, and it was your typical fried bar grub. Mozzarella sticks.. fine. Chicken tenders... actually may not have been frozen! But I think the ranch that came with it was spoiled, so I avoided it... I don't think I would eat the food at any other time than a drunk occasion.
Holy crap! Â The Pizza is surprisingly good!
It was close to River Market where some family lives and it got some decent reviews so we decided to check it out. Â
It is definitely a hole in the wall kind of place. Â When first walking in, you're greeted with looks from the regulars at the bar and if your lucky, the bartender asks what you want. Â Besides the old stained chairs and bar stool tables, they have a nice patio outside and they usually have some good classic rock playing in the background.
The Pizza will certainly make up for any concerns you may have. Â No matter how many toppings you load on top of your pizza, the crust is always crispy. Â The toppings are generous and the sauce is awesome. Go on Monday's for $4 off each pizza.
Overall, cold beer and good pizza made this guy happy.
Great neighborhood dive. Had the pleasure of meeting the owners, Joe and Vivienne, extremely nice people that definitely take pride in their establishment.
Great pizza, crispy crust with a sweet-ish sauce. Can't beat free popcorn and peanuts. Nice pool table, but felt like we were the evening's entertainment when we played. As the bar got more crowded, avoiding impaling people with the cue became more and more difficult as the bar itself is pretty small. Fun large outdoor patio, too.
Will definitely head back soon - hands down the best bar in the neighborhood.
PS: THEY DELIVER FOOD! The only restaurant in the Rivermarket I've found that delivers.
The Shack is kind of hit and miss. Â Several of my friends live in the Market and are regulars here, so pretty much the only time I go is to meet them. Â It's definitely a dive and the service is pretty good. Â You won't get a smile or anything over friendly from the bartenders unless they recognize you or know you personally.
The patio is huge and definitely one of the draws. Â I haven't had the pizza, but everyone says it's good. Â It'd give this place four stars, but on two different occasions, we were charged for more drinks than we had. Â I think they might just guess if you run a tab on how many you've had, so now I just pay with cash for each drink.
This is a local bar and a suitable KC dive.
This is really a neat place, the staff was really nice and the prices were cheap. When they got busy we had to go up to the bar to get our drink and were told that our customers are used to that and that was one of the reasons the drinks were so cheap. We had a great time and will definately be back. The owner Joe talked us into trying his pizza and it was great he said it was his family recipe. If you go, you have to try it.
Review Source:My last experience here was not as good as the 10-15 before that. Â I am not sure what happened to this place being a dive bar but Friday night the place was busier then it is on St. Pattys day with everyone dressed in shirts and ties. There were no seats past the bar or at the bar so we sat in front of the entrance which is directly in front of the bar. Â After 20 minutes realizing we were not getting a waitress we went up to order our drinks and apparently Rum and Coke Double Tall is now served with Jim Beam. Â Well we drank our first drinks and went back to old trusty the Quaff for the rest of the evening.
Review Source:Thanks to a Tweet from Tully Corcoran of the Topeka Capitol-Journal, I decided to try this place for lunch and enlisted a couple of my co-workers for help.
It's located in the midst of a pretty empty part of Columbus Park, though it's only a hundred yards from the Heart of America bridge. It's got that look, the look of a dive...and it is, which makes it all the more fun. The inside is fine, actually nicer than I was expecting, though you can tell it's one of those places that was unbearable before the smoking ban.
You sit on barstools at high-top tables, or on old office chairs at regular tables. There's TV's everywhere for watching sports and they've got great specials during Royals games - 20% off pizza. They also have 1/2 off pizza from 12-7 on Saturdays, as long as you're drinking beer (I was told).
The pizza is all one style and they call it Sicilian. They have all the normal ingredients and you order by circling what you want on a sheet of paper. The pizza is a delicious thin, crispy crust and the sauce is what really sets this pizza apart - it's a sweet sauce that reminds me of New York-style pizza, but the crust is very unlike NY-style, so it's a pretty unique flavor/texture combo. Definitely one of the better pizzas I've had in KC.
Miller Lite bottle were $2.75 at lunch so the beer's cheap too. It'd be a great place to watch a game or grab a drink/dinner after work. I'll definitely be back; don't let the location/look scare you off - it's well-worth trying out.
For my first few years that I lived nearby I was hesitant to come to Caddy Shack. Â Â It looked... well... scary. :) Â Â I finally got brave enough in 2006 to give it a try and immediately discovered I couldn't have been more wrong.
The owner, and all of the bartenders, are exceptionally nice and welcoming people and go out of their way to take care of you.  Drinks are cheap and plentiful.  It can get crowded, especially on the weekend  after the 1:30am bars close, but even at its busiest I've never felt claustrophobic.  There may not be much room at the two-sided bar but there's plenty of room to spread out, especially since the addition of the patio. Â
By the way, it would be a crime to go to Caddyshack and not try the pizza. Â It's arguably the best pizza available in downtown Kansas City. Â The owner once told me it's his family recipe. Â I don't know if he was being serious or pulling my leg, but all that matters is how truly delicious it is. Â A crispy cracker crust and very rich in flavor. Â You can order it as late as 2am and you can even call in orders to-go. Â And while you're waiting help yourself to the free popcorn and shake some of the homemade shaking spice on it. Â Mmmm mmm mmm.
As another reviewer noted: beer is cheap, but other drinks not quite as much. Â I bought a round of shots and paid noticeably more than I paid for the same round of the same shots at another nearby bar earlier that night.
This place is nice and hidden, drinks are strong and cheap and the bartenders are cool. Â For me it's a place to go when you don't want to be very social but still want to be out of the house and have a drinky...but it's not my neighborhood. Â
For many that live in that area it can get pretty hype, they have a huge patio area outside.
This is my kind of bar, for sure. Â A good enough jukebox (EN VOGUE!), and cheap beer. Â My friend got something besides beer and it was a little expensive, so apparently you should just stick to beer here. Â I drank Busch Light, and probably spent 10 dollars total for a few hours worth of drinking.
A huge patio, with the ambient sounds of trains going by. Â I like this. Â You can faintly hear the jukebox, but if you're with a particularly loud group of people trying to hear the jukebox selections from the patio can be difficult. Â
They also have pizza, and maybe other food. Â I don't really do dairy, so I skipped that. Â
If I lived closer by, I would go here all the time.
Good stuff. Â Sarah is a super bartender + Â outdoor back patio, pool tables & popcorn (w/ great shaking spice). Â The pizza was a very tasty surprise. Â Thin crust w/ flavorful sauce, well done (how I like it) & you can get it late night. Â Jukebox is so-so. Â Friendly cast of characters & easy going vibe. Â A great joint, to which I will return.
Review Source:I can't believe I have been living in the River Market for 6 years and have waited this long to visit Caddy Shack. Â It is like a parallel universe right in my own back yard. Â
Let's be honest, it is pretty much a little dive, but without all the menacing faces. Â It tends to attract a mix of young and old from all walks of life. Â Much of the crowd is made of up locals, which explains the mix of people. Â Everyone that works there is laid back and friendly.
In the summer you can chill on their huge outdoor patio. Â They also serve food, but I haven't been that brave yet. Â I will stick with the popcorn machine.
If you have never been, I suggest you go around 11 or midnight after you have got a good buzz on. Â You never know who you might meet.
