Well, it started out better than my last attempt at ordering from here; at least I got my food this time. Â I ordered through GrubHub this time, my order came in a timely fashion, and the delivery person was friendly and courteous. Unfortunately, that's where the good part ends.
I ordered pot stickers, wonton soup, Szechuan beef, and pork fried rice. Â I get the order to my desk, and notice there is a big puddle of brown liquid at pooled in the bottom of the plastic bag. Â What happened, is that the little plastic container of sauce for my pot stickers had melted, then it escaped through a hole in the melted styrafoam of the container. Â Actually, both foam containers had melted some from the steam. Â So I started off with a big mess.
The quality of the food ranged from downright horrible, to decent. Â In the decent category: pot stickers, and fried rice (actually, I will say the pork fried rice was the best part; fresh and not too salty,) and the soup. Â On the other hand, the beef was just horrible. Â I ate about three bites, and just could not go any further. Â The meat and vegetables were just unpleasantly soggy. Â You could not tell the difference between the two. Â The rest of the order found it's way to the trash bin.
My hubby wanted chinese & I wanted sushi so why not give this place a try. The chinese food was very good, you cannot go wrong with $5 lunch special it was more than enough for the both of us. The dumplings and sauce were very good as well however the sushi was awful. It was hot almost as if it had been warmed up and the wasabi had no kick at all. Also they told us to sit down and they would take our order but after a few people came in and had their orders placed before us we realized this wasn't a sit down restaurant. Don't think we'll be coming back any time soon we'll stick to our regular sushi and chinese restaurants.
Review Source:The food is priced very well and the Singapore noodle is the biggest I've ever seen and at only 5 dollars that's awesome. Why one star then if it's so awesome? Well, I don't know what they use for their sauce or whatever but it smells awful. It smells like bologna, sweat and musk. I ate about four forkfuls of it before I threw it away. Which hurt my soul. Because I'm cheap. I also got the vegetable tempura, which was not tasty. Ate one carrot and threw that away too. $10.54 down the drain. I know nothing was wrong with it because I have a very sensitive stomach and I would've gotten sick instantly so I don't know what that ghastly smell is.
Review Source:I came here to give it another go but was I wrong, the orange chicken was dry and not flavorful. The chicken and broccoli was a simple dish where they even messed up in. Â Man I am just disappointed in myself for even going back there. I cannot believe someone can mess up on chicken broccoli, the broccoli was bitter for who knows what reason and the sauce was a tasteless. The only thing that really tasted okay was the fried rice which is sad. I will definitely not come back here again.
Review Source:I always drive by but never came in for food. I finally had the courage after a good 10 years of coming by here. I trusted yelpers on their reviews so I came here by choice as opposed to Maxewells. I kind of regret it.
I ordered my childhood favorite "beef stir fried with thick rice noodles" (comes with onions and scallions/ green onions). I specifically told them to go easy on the oil, but that didn't happen (I'm on a diet). My noodles were still drowning in oil. Usually this dish is a challenge to make since it requires enough oil so it doesn't stick to the wok and the art is to toss the seasoning evenly on the noodles and beef. I guess being the top 8 Chinese restaurant didn't help. (I'm guessing the food they made for the competition was different from what's served on the menu because I honestly don't taste it.)
The noodles were still stuck together (from package) and were barely touched with sauce, this also contributed to an uneven taste; some of the noodles were salty and some didn't have any taste.
My date ordered the beef with tofu (dark sauce). It was really salty in my opinion. I didn't taste anything special about it besides being covered in sauce.
There were plenty of gnats and night fliers when we went in to eat. The person who took our orders were busy texting (face was literally glued to the phone for extended periods of time). I kindly asked for attention but the phone interrupted and I was not acknowledged.
I doubt I will come back if my requests were to be ignored. Top 8 restaurants? I would agree, but I doubt that title was acquired by cooking what are currently offered on the menu.
Food is pretty good for what it is, but I would pickup before ever ordering delivery again. They were rushing me off the phone without even asking if I was going to do cash or credit (i had my credit card) and were super rude after I told them credit.... NEVER ordering delivery again. That experience just made me never want to order from there again.
Review Source:i come here once in a full moon when i want Chinese food to go since I'm a few minutes away.. there is a parking lot so its easy to find parking.. the service is OK... the price is decent but the food is just average.. i usually order the shrimp with lobster sauce over rice since that's the most decent tasting dish I've tried over there.. but that again i am Chinese so my standard is a little higher for Chinese food..
Review Source:Really, this place is just a two star place. Â It gets an extra star for being cheap and an extra star for having awesome delivery.
The food
I ordered sweet and sour chicken, orange chicken, and szechuan beef. Â The orange chicken and szechuan beef were pretty good, but the sweet and sour chicken was heavy on the breading, leading to inconsistent sizes (same meat chunks, but some had a little bit of breading and some had a ton). Â I ordered at dinner time, I received a fortune cookie and a small thing of rice with each entree, but no egg roll. Â I didnt finish everything, except the sweet and sour chicken, and they reheated up well.
The delivery/the bill
I called in my food a little past 9pm. Â From phone call to arrival took about 25 minutes, and I live just about a mile away from there. Â The guy was super friendly and genuinely appreciated the business. Â There is a $2 delivery charge. Â I ordered the three entrees, and the total with tax and delivery was $18, price per entree ranged between 4.45 and $5.35.
The take home:
If you want food that is cheap above all else, order from here. Â Maybe stay away from the breaded items. Â Order a lot of food, mainly because there is a $2 delivery charge - why get a $5 meal and pay a $2 charge and tip on top of it?
Cheap and fast chinese food. I tend to be a picky eater so when I order food I go with what I know. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken lunch special. For the price it was more than enough food and it wasn't bad. It also came with an egg roll, which I would have eaten had it not been for the shrimp. I don't eat seafood and it would have been nice if they mentioned it contained shrimp. That lack of disclosure makes it 3 stars for me.
Review Source:I tried Chinese Kitchen today. I ordered the kung pow shrimp and scallops. Turned out to be totally inedible. The shrimp and scallops had no red peppers nor peanuts. Instead the onions, green peppers, and mystery veggies were floating in a red broth with maybe 2-4 shrimp and scallops. I give this place one star because my dad liked his Orange chicken
Review Source:I'm personally not very  forgiving in my opinions, but Chinese Kitchen has been a staple of living for me for many years. The food is solid.
Great consistency, Â flavor, and portion size. The Chicken and Rice soup has comforted me in my darkest hours like no other. If you like Chinese curry, I don't know if you could have any objections. Its strong, pungent, and sure to make your closest friends weary for many days after you imbibe its deliciousness.
Above all else, the owner is a Cubs fan, and in the heart of enemy territory, I pretty sure it doesn't get any better than that.
Flip a coin, you have a 50/50 chance. This is what it is like when ordering at Chinese Kitchen, one day it is the really good and then the next it's complete undercooked mess of tough bone riddled meat The three stars are for the days that they get it right. The place is always quick and the store is really clean. I don't know what it is, but their eggrolls are not quite right. Sort of like the Buffalo Bills of the early 90's. Something wrong you just can't seem to figure out what it is.
Review Source:This restaurant has saved my life a number of times.
Fried rice + steamed rice($7.5) Â is a good & cheap deal for a crazy rice eater like me.
Their non-veg items are equally good. This is a nice place for students to have food & watch the big screen(mostly watched by the rest. staff).
The guy at the counter is friendly & never messes with any orders.
One good thing about restaurants in south is free parking.
As a college student- sometimes you get desperate for nourishment. Â As a tech school college student- this need pops up far too often.
If you're looking for decent fast food chinese delivered lightning fast to the IIT campus, this is your place. Â L29- sesame chicken, white rice instead of fried, and crab rangoon in place of the eggroll- go-to meal.
Cheap, quick, good enough. Â Sometimes it isn't real consistent, but meals at such a low price just need to be edible... sometimes.
Never had delivery till college- this place is a real keeper.
When I come to Chicago to visit, I will most likely have a meal from this place.
Super cheap delivery for college students. Â I don't even know what the restaurant looks like. Â I think I feel better not knowing. Â It's still pretty tasty.
This place got me through some late nights of study. Â It's one of the few places that delivers late this far south. Â Food comes fast, hot and plenty.
Don't expect authentic. Â Expect the sauces to be thickened to gravy. Â The first time ordering I didn't have the menu, just some number a friend gave me like a shady hookup. Â I spoke in Chinese ordering some basic dishes and they replied "No we don't do that" and I knew what I was getting myself into.
They cook American Style Chinese food. Tastes are already changed for American customers (more sugar, more oil, more salt, adding cheese, a lot of soy is the features of this style, but it's not healthy and it's not original Chinese family made food style.) , so as a traditional Chinese food lover I only give them 3 out of 5. By the way, I highly recommend every one try their Chicken Corn Soup, it's great!
Review Source:I really really hate to only give this place two stars, because when I first started eating here almost two years ago now, I actually really enjoyed it. The beef and broccoli was actually beef and broccoli and not beef and random veggies that I can't recognize and don't taste very good. The beef was actually tender and quite fresh in a thick soy saucey tasting sauce, now not so much. I swear, once we got a batch that tasted moldy. The last time Aaron ordered it for me, it was super watered down, and the water chess nuts had black spots on them. ICK! I don't get it. I don't get how they get away with that. Maybe I am an odd ball and can taste when food is bad and most people can't? I don't know.
I also really enjoyed the governors chicken, with its thick sweet sauce and perfectly cooked chicken, until one day I got a batch where the chicken was in big chunks and it was undercooked. Um no thanks. Again how do they do that? Are they just trying to churn out the orders too quick.?
Now I stick to the sesame chicken. Its nothing special, but it has a decent flavor, and the chicken is cut into thinner slices so I know it will be cooked through. Sometimes Aaron is nice enough to ask if I would like a won ton soup, which I appreciate every place has a saving grace and Chinese Kitchen's is the won ton soup. Its a tad on the salty side but in a good way.
I don't know I really want to enjoy this place more than I do, so I go along with it when Aaron S. wants to order. He has been nice enough to not order from there too often though.
Sorry Chinese Kitchen, but please go back to being tasty and fresh! (and please stop making me wonder if something is wrong with Aaron S's taste buds)
A mecca for drunk/sober college kids. Â The staff is very friendly and most of all FAST. Â I ordered General Tso's and I got it inside of 15 minutes. Â That's pretty good in my book for an order of food I COULDN'T EVEN FINISH. Â Very tasty, great value, awful for you. Â Everything that a (horizontally) growing fratboy needs.
Review Source:Before I write this review, I should probably give a shout-out to the Chinese Kitchen staff's kids, all of whom I've probably put through college by now.
Yea, so this is where it all began. Â 8 years ago, just moved to the city, just joined a fraternity and we (of course) had been drinking in the afternoon and it was time for dinner. Â So the hands join forces in pointing to the bulletin board where the Holy Grail sits - the takeout menu for Chinese Kitchen. Â I'm still willing to bet that they initially picked this place of all others as the Holy Grail because, well, the address is 420 (W 31st Street). Â I was skeptical at first - but what convinced me was the fact that their "Lunch Specials" are done all damned day and night.
The perfect amount of greasy meats in slathery sauce and a mound of salty fried rice with a gigantic eggroll steaming on top. Â That's right. Â And every single Lunch Special option is $4.95 or LESS.
Eventually I became the designated Order Guy among a group of my frat brothers. Â I was responsible for collecting the orders, calling them up and answering the door to receive the cardboard box of deliciousness that once held produce or something. Â They knew me by name.
And once I moved out of the frat house and into Bridgeport, somehow I wound up living just two blocks away. Â Who needs delivery? Â Now they can know me by my face. Â And indeed they did.
It's right about now that I have to indeed admit that they've been lacking as of late. Â Once the glory days of youth pass you by, you start to notice the little things... Â A few pieces of undercooked chicken. Â A few pieces of beef that aren't beef at all. Â And then they get shut down by the Board of Health. Â For like a week.
My problem is that AFTER they RE-OPENED after passing the second inspection, that's when I first got sick from their food. Â It's only happened once aside from that, but it boggles the mind that they could have been filthy as heck for years and my food was awesome and I never got sick, and then when they "clean up", suddenly something's adversely affecting my tummy?
But it's still a great place for Chinese - even if it's a stone's throw from Chinatown, and there's several other Chinese places in Bridgeport competing as well, this is my first choice and it always will be. Â Their Governor's Chicken is my favorite. Â The Sesame Chicken is a close third. Â And for $18, my girl and I can each get a giant entree for ourselves, a large bowl of soup (wonton, please!) and two eggrolls to boot!
Sure, you may never achieve my level of greatness that I can walk in and they know who I am and dash off to get my order - but it's worth trying a few times to see if you are willing to give it a go. Â After all, the lunch specials are less than $5 and you can get 'em any time of the day!
This place makes the best chinese food I have ever eaten! I think the generals chicken is phenomenal and I don't even like chicken! Every dish is so, so good! You can't go wrong with anything. It is a little unassuming, being so close to but not in Chinatown, and then also in a strip mall. Skip those fancy looking places and swing on over to Chinese Kitchen! Take note, it is carry-out and delivery only. I don't even remember seeing any seating inside.
Review Source:Alot of the food is hit or miss. But I like the Sweet & Sour dishes as well as the Orange Chicken.
They offer lunch combos that are awesome. For approx $5 you get an entree, an egg roll and whatever room is left over they fill with a ton of fried rice that they need to staple it shut to hold it closed. You can't beat it.
They're delivery time is great. I tip good and I swear these guys must be going thru red lights or know some major shortcut for how fast it shows up!!
Although this place has a couple of small tables for sit down dining, I'd really suggest you get take out instead. Â Pretty much Chinese grub on the cheap. Â The food comes out fairly quickly and it tastes decent for the prices they charge (which isn't much). Â There are plenty of rice box type entrees with portions big enough for a starvin' Marvin or a couple wimpy girly mahns (try to read this part with an Ahnauld accent). Â There's the standard chop suey slop and also a couple of half-way authentic Chinatown type items to choose from.
Take a break from Maxwell St's pork chop sammiches and polishes and get something healthier (although not by much) across the street.
