We only had mint juleps here on a hot Saturday afternoon, but they were damn fine juleps. The atmosphere is gorgeous, and the staff seemed a little slow, but it ended up being a good thing as we sat and enjoyed the bar. I'd like to come back and try the food, as the croque madame a waitress was scarfing down looked delicious, but that will have to wait for another time.
Review Source:A few years ago I visited Clover Club for a private party held in the back room and loved it, but I figured it was a bad idea to review a place on a specialty event held outside of the main establishment. I was well aware of their prowess as cocktail masters, but this weekend while searching for a place to have brunch I stumbled into Clover Club and was absolutely floored by not only the fact they had brunch but how amazingly delicious it was. Â
Everything from the coffee and tea, served in glassware, to the bacon tasting and especially the entree items were absolutely amazing. I had the Englander (a take on Eggs Benedict with hanger steak), and a potato cake that were both seasoned to perfection. I could not recommend this place more highly.
My husband and I attended a private birthday party at Clover Club and it was obvious within about a minute we'd be back. Â The "bartender" Travis, is not only obviously excellent at what he does - and really he's an artist. Â I'm not one of these over-the-top cocktail snobs but damn, his drinks were creative and delicious and interesting, and he was patient in taking into account what each patron liked and didn't like. Â YUM. Â I had, among other tasty drinks, The Clover Club signature cocktail (gin, dry vermouth, lemon, raspberry syrup and egg white) and a Marquis Especial (pisco, lemon juice, strawberry, champagne). Â The passed hors d' oeuvres were also fantastic! Â My husband loved the lobster roll (I don't eat seafood). Â We both basically attacked the servers for as many chicken skewers and "steak over toast" (tender herb-marinated hanger steak, sliced and served over toasted baguette with a spicy horseradish cream sauce). Â Descriptions are from the website! Â The private party was in a back room and we had 30ish people comfortably mingling, sitting on barstools, and in various chairs and couches. Â Really just a lovely evening (celebrating my awesome friend's 30th!) and we can't wait to return!
Review Source:You know that Seinfeld episode where George's dad and Kramer are hanging out in their billiards room and call it "the place to be"? Well, the Clover Club is Smith Street's place to be.
With cocktail bars as popular as ever in NYC, I just had to see what all the fuss is about. First of all, amazing decor, especially in the back room (that can be reserved for private parties). Of course, you have chandeliers, area rugs and old timey looking couches.
The cocktail menu is also very extensive and well thought out. It's divided into several sections based on the type of drink and also based on the ingredients. But I will say that there was a disparity between what I expected and what I received for certain drinks. The Spy Plane sounded like a hardcore scotch-based drink, but what I got was a giant fruity tiki mug complete with straw. Some other drinks under the Tiki section of the menu were served in regular glasses and were way stronger. So I guess ask questions?
Head here before 9:30 for a better shot at getting a seat. I wouldn't even try to bring a big group here on Fridays or Saturdays.
I went here last year for a birthday party one evening. I ordered the duck fat crisps (yum), olives, and a couple of beers. I tasted a couple of cocktails as well -- they were all delicious! Romantic (read: dimly lit) atmosphere -- accommodating staff. Had a great time. Go for the happy hour -- otherwise, it gets a little pricey.
Review Source:Lots of brunch places along Smith St. and come Sunday morning the good ones all have lines down the sidewalk. Except this place, which even at Brunch Zero Hour -- 11am on Mothers Day -- is more than half empty. Don't know why, maybe because people think of it as more of a bar? Anyway, the brunch here is every bit as good as at Cafe Luluc or Apartment 138 or any of the other packed places up and down Smith St. Yet we got the swanky back room all to ourselves.
Almost all on the savory side and portion sides are moderate, which is all good as far as I am concerned, but yeah, if you want a trough of pancakes this is probably not your best bet. They're interesting too, which is not often the case with brunch. I especially recommend the smoked salmon. And a bloody mary, of course. Or several.
Love, love, love The Clover Club. They have awesome cocktails. I hear the food can be good, but I haven't tried it. I am just too in love with their cocktail selection.
Their old fashions are awesome, as are their moscow mules.
However, my favorite summer time drink here is the Bermuda Swizzle. It just hits the spot! Great atmosphere. Can get crowded but not in the I-can't-move kind of way.
Definitely check this place out if you're into cocktails.
Came in for brunch and some things were good and some were just blah.
I got one of the omelets and it was pretty damn tasty. Â The small side salad was ok but the side of grits that I ordered came out oily and runny. Â Not good. Â I ordered a glass of OJ and it was great. Â Then I ordered a mimosa and it looked funky. Â Like they poured champagne in a glass and dropped an Airborne tablet inside. Â I know they didn't do that but I'm just trying to describe what the drink looked like. Â
Service was ok. Â It was really busy but our server was nice and did a good job. Â
I would eat here again.
Made a reservation weeks ago for a table for six in the back room. Get there will my party and there is a party in the back room and they give us one of the tables in front the bar. There is no way six woman were going to sit there for dinner and drinks and be comfortable. The hostess offered no apology and no solution. So we took our business across the street to Hunters and spent our $600 there. Not our loss, there are lots of fine establishments with great cocktails and good food. We had a great time at Hunters. The Clover Club should honor their reservations, or find patrons a reasonable solution. Not squeeze six adult woman into a table meant for 4/5 tops. Going to the Clover Club was my suggestion, I won't be making that mistake again.
Review Source:Bartenders are good , accommodating at making you whatever you want. All of the drinks were well made and tasted good . Expensive as expected for craft cocktails . One thing that really perplexed me was that I was only able to find TWO drinks without lemon juice , lime juice or some combination of the two. What's up with that ? Sometimes you just don't feel like drinking a freaking lemon !
Review Source:I had some time to kill, so I dropped into this charming Prohibition era Speak Easy in Cobble Hill for a homemade cocktail concoction. They have a nice happy hour with $7 specials on some of their popular cocktails. I had the rye, orange juice, lime juice and grenadine cocktail -- one of my favorite combinations -- and loved it. Though we were the only guests at the early hour, I can see why this place is doing so well. I want to go back for the enticing menu and interesting drinks.
Review Source:This speak-easy-esque lounge was the perfect setting for a lovely, romantic, mysterious night in Brooklyn. As soon as I walked through the door, I was overcome with the dark woods, the little tables, and the general bubbling excitement of the patrons. Though it was crowded, we put our name on the list for a table and made our way to the bar. After puzzling over the cocktail menu and discussing the drinks, a lovely woman overheard us and suggested that I try a pear/champagne concoction that wasn't too sweet and wasn't too dry, but just right. It was love at first sip.
Eventually we got our table and ordered the house-made chips. There we sat, talking and tasting for a couple of hours until it was far past Cinderella's bedtime. When we finally decided to leave, I knew that I had found a true Brooklyn gem. I floated home on pear-infused champagne bubbles.
Top shelf liquors, custom cocktails, and smartly dressed bartenders complete with ties and vests with an impressive complement of cocktail ingredients at their fingertips. Â The bar was dark and noisy, lit by either perfectly dimmed lights or lots of candles. Â We had to elbow our way to the bar and found a cocktail menu of drinks I was completely unfamiliar with. Â A Brooklynette do-gooder saw me struggling, but heard my girlfriend mention her desire for Champagne and she jumped in with a perfect recommendation for their pear-Champagne concoction (not to be found on the menu). Â I went with my bourbon manhattan standby which was easily one of the best of I've ever had. Â
Either I was remarkably comfortable in the space or it actually didn't take long, but we were able to get seated in a cozy candle-lit table in what felt like a short period of time.  There  we were able to order drinks and food without the chaos of being at the bar. Â
Despite having a wonderful time, I can't give it 5 stars for a few reasons. Â I was overwhelmed by the pressure of ordering at the bar. Â Between the foreign menu items and the intensity of the bartender, and the number of people wanting to order, I was definitely not feeling sure of myself. Â When the drinks ended up costing $13 apiece, I felt pretty lucky that we liked what we got. Â My advice would be to try ordering your favorite drink and seeing how they do it. Â I ordered mine out of panic, but it totally blew my mind. Â If that's not your scene, grab a table and order through a server. Â Was much less pressure. Â The turn around from the server was also extremely quick given how long it took the bartender just to make the drinks while I was watching. Â
Not perfect for me, but definitely a unique is experience with top of the line cocktails. Â Give it a try next time you're in Brooklyn!
Visited The Clover Club with a work friend after hours and loved the ambience, food, drinks, and service. The place got packed quickly, so I would arrive immediately after work. Happy hour is reasonably priced. The drinks were delicious - recommend any cocktail from the $7-8 happy hour menu. While the steak on toast wasn't anything special, the macaroni and cheese was out of this world! Tasty a definitely treat! Take your time enjoy a Wednesday with some live jazz in a pretty elegant, classy, gorgeous establishment.
Review Source:Love this place. Cocktails are great, food is good, and place itself is cozy yet trendy that doesn't get too crowded or rowdy. Fried oysters were amazing and I wanted to get more. My friend became obsessed with the bread pudding, which is served warm with fresh creme and caramel sauce.
Review Source:I took a date here on Valentine's Day last year and had an overall good experience (with Clover Club and with my date). Â However, I felt it was lacking compared to other offerings in South Brooklyn. Â The ambience lacked personality (a little sterile), and drink presentation was not consistent. Â Why does it matter? Â Because it is a bona-fide $$$ establishment, and you expect these things. Â I ordered two martinis and one came with chilled residual and lemon zest while the second came in an oversized glass with a lemon peel. Â When I ask for lemon peel, I also don't want lemon zest. Â Bad form. Â Go to Blueprint and check out how to properly craft classic cocktails. Â Jakewalk is also better IMO.
Review Source:Crowded and noisy when I went on a Saturday evening, but I suppose that's to be expected. The waitress or bartender mixed up liquors on both drinks; the replacement drinks were pretty good, but some sort of comp would have been nice given the 15-20 minute turnaround from the time we ordered to the time we received the correct drinks.
Would I go back? Maybe when it's not as busy.
This review is for brunch. Sounds like cocktails and dinner are far better experiences, so I'd definitely be back to try what nighttime does for the place. But lunch/brunch wouldn't be an option again.
We stopped in because after walking past a few places on Smith that were suspiciously empty, we figured the crowd had to be right. While encountering a twinge of flustered 'tude from the front of house, we were seated within ten minutes. But that's where the waiting game began.
Granted, the bar area was humming but it took somewhere between 10-15 minutes to get a glass of bubbly and while our food items hit the table within 30 minutes of ordering, the table next to us was losing the will to live as they waited and waited, eventually canceling an order and leaving.
The deviled eggs (four different 'styles') made a good accompaniment with drinks and the bacon tasting plate was luxurious without being overwhelming (maple bacon, regular -- although not particularly crispy bacon, and duck bacon served with a few slices of barely-toasted bread). People around us seemed to be tucking into far more extravagant egg dishes, which all looked fantastic. So all in all, food is not an issue here. Just a problem expediting.
I rented out the back room for my birthday party and couldn't have been happier with the choice of a venue. Clover Club is gorgeous & classy, and every cocktail I had was absolutely delicious. Christine the manager was a pleasure to work with, and the process of booking out the back room was seamless and easy. We had our own bartender in the back, Ryan, who made fantastic drinks. The fireplace was definitely a huge added bonus on a cold January night!
Highly recommended for drinks or a private party!
Clover Club is yet another place that had been on my "to try" list for well over a year. Â Finally, with an excuse to head down to the area, I found myself perched atop a stool at the bar, watching the mixologists create wonderful libations for the many, many patrons. Â
On a Saturday night, this place is (seemingly) the place to be. Â If you want a table, you'll have to either make a reservation or wait at the bar for something to open up. Â
And that brings me to my next point -- the bar. Â If you can't find a stool, you'll have to order your drink and simply find yourself some standing space until something frees up. Â Lucky, though, that at $12 a cocktail folks really aren't parking themselves for the long haul. Â I ordered the "Uncle Buck," which was unbelievable. Â Though it comes in a high ball glass, it really isn't unbearably strong and I felt pleasantly buzzed but not drunk after the contents had disappeared.
FYI -- When I left at 9:45 p.m. there was a dude outside carding people as they came in. Â Weird but true.
If I ever used the word "swanky" to describe a place (and I don't), it would be for Clover Club. You can say I usually am what they call a "Manhattan snob" - I rarely venture out to Brooklyn. I've lived in Manhattan almost a year and have been to Brooklyn twice besides going to Clover Club- both times involved meeting my friend who lives there. The only reason I went this time, (that too on a Wednesday!) was to try out some famous pizza place called Lucali. When we got there, however, it was closed for renovation. Having made the "long trip" to Brooklyn, I wasn't too happy. But after grabbing dinner at another Italian restaurant, the course of the evening changed.
We went stepped into Clover Club - rated as a place that serves the tastiest cocktails. I honestly expected it to be all right. However, the moment we entered, I was enchanted by the energetic vibe of this place. The main restaurant section was dark and had smooth classical music coming from a live band. As we walked further in, we entered a backroom that was a little brighter, softer, and had a warm crackling fireplace on the side. We cozied ourselves around it and enjoyed the hip old music (probably from 1920s? I don't really know). I definitely felt that men in feathered hats and women in black gloves (all in a non-hipster way) would fit right in. Overall you could not ask for a classier atmosphere.
Normally skeptical of experimenting with cocktails (I usually stick to wine or a margarita) I ordered the Crystal Fall - and I am glad I did! Clover Club definitely does not have it's reputation of serving the tastiest cocktails in New York for nothing. Apparently they have mixologists who work hard at creating the best cocktails with enriching flavors. The bartenders spend a while making the cocktails to make sure everything about it is perfect, fresh ingredients, perfect proportions, exact preparation times and lovely presentation.
My Crystal Fall had its ice crushed beautifully, such that it really resembled "Crystal Fall." It is made of cognac, rum and Palo Cortado sherry. While the concoction of 3 types of liquor made me skeptical, the flavors of ginger syrup, lemon juice, apple cider and Angostura bitters were such that I almost couldn't taste the alcohol! Â My friend's cocktail, the Blackberry Fool, was even better with lemon, vanilla syrup, cream, blackberries and rose flower water - definitely recommend checking it out!
Our extremely casual pizza evening turned out to be a super random and fun night out. Clover Club is great to hangout on the weekdays, on weekends I'm sure it would be more crowded, but just as fun. Clover Club has also converted me - definitely plan to check out more places in Brooklyn, as well as repeat this place and perhaps try all the different cocktails!
I can't believe it took us so long to come to Clover Club. Â Anyway, it's good. Â I got my two favorite drinks (The Last Word and The Final Ward) made perfectly, and my wife's Singapore Sling was delicious.
Food is probably a weak point here, like all the other mixology type bars, but what we got (duck fat potato chips, a lamb burger and some pulled pork) did what it needed to do for us (i.e., provided ballast for drinks).
This place is so classy it made me wish I was wearing a fedora or a fur cape. The cocktail list is extensive and divided up by informational paragraphs about the origin of various cocktails, so you can learn while you get drunk! Learning is classy.
I had a Gin Blossom, which was tart and sweet and floral and strong and delicious. It was served in a tiny little glass with an extra minature ice-bucket containing a miniature beaker of excess cocktail. Tiny ice buckets are classy.
We shared the 'steak on toast', which was just what it sounds like, but hella delicious. Toast is also classy.
No bar embodies everything great and obnoxious about contemporary Brooklyn better and worse than Clover Club.
The place is paradoxical - where the great frontier of beverage experimentation meets downright frightful service. A place where the stone fireplace and luxurious couches take a backseat to missing, basic hospitality fundamentals.
You can warm your feet next to a crackling fire but can't get your water filled. Order a delicious snack and have it never arrive. Pay $20 for a beverage that takes 30 minutes to reach you, but boy is that mint in my julep fresh!
In the end, Clover Club is not worth it. You can have a great time with great service if (big if) you can snag a seat at the bar.
But as the name of this place implies, you'll be trying your luck here, one way or the other.
Took my parents and a few of my friends here for a good time tonight. We all enjoyed the macaroni and cheese (with bacon), lamb burger (best ever!) and the steak tartare. The bar was killing it with their seasonal offerings! They had this cocktail that was pumpkin inspired, and it was amazing! I tried the "table talk" which consisted of pecan infused rum and hazelnut liqueur, to name a few ingredients. Still not as good as the pumpkin cocktail, though.
Michael Aranella and his band were playing live, and although I enjoyed his music, I didn't enjoy him shushing me.... Not my problem that the bar was already loud, there were tons of people inside, I was 2 drinks in, and I had to raise my voice so that my table of 6 could hear me. A bit asshole-ish, but whatevs.
I went to Clover Club on a blind-ish date on a Tuesday. Our neighbors apparently fell in love with my date and couldn't believe it was the first time we'd met. (read: apparently I come off as if I know everyone within 10 minutes?)
We didn't eat, but I had some awesome drinks. I had the Olympic Collins and made my date choose the second, the Port au Port.
Next time I'll forgo the table and sit at the bar, to see if the bartender is willing to make me something from his/her own imagination.
A must for anyone in Brooklyn. I'm ashamed it took me so long to go there.
Had a great time.. came in without a reservation... had a few drinks @ the bar (everything on the champagne cocktails section- all good).. then our table was ready.
There was live music on a weeknight and even the record after the band was very pleasant with the ambiance.
Here is what we had:
MAC & CHEESE - really good
HOUSE CURED SCOTTISH SALMON - delicious - I'd have it for brunch
STEAK TARTARE - worth a try but not my #1 pick
LAMB BURGER w/ GOAT CHEESE - great and it comes with CRISPS which are yummy-
STEAK OVER TOAST - the best thing on the menu - get it medium- we had 2
CHEESE PLATE- can't go wrong with cheese
STEAK AND ONION RINGS - same as the one on toast but the onion rings are out of this world.. and i normally hate onion rings.. these were soooo good!
Drinks- I think all their beverages are solid choices... and the bartender will create one for you if you don't care for whats on the menu. But if you do try anything I highly recommend  AMBROSIA PUNCH and yes it is available in single serving.
I will definitely be back again.
I'm not quite sure how I ended up out here at midnight on a random Saturday night, but I was and it was nice to find a cocktail bar in NY that wasn't packed without a wait to get a table! Â I wouldn't say the drinks are cheap, but there's a pretty extensive menu and you won't have trouble finding a drink down your alley. Â
Not really a destination spot, but if you're in the area and want a cocktail, this place should be at the top of your list.
A friend had been telling me about this place for a year before we actually made it there. And he was absolutely right - it is almost unspeakably incredible.
We went late one night. It was crowded, there was live music, and it had a rich, fun, classy atmosphere. Old-fashioned and classic, low lighting, lots of wood, and very much a feeling of the real thing. I might have seen some bow ties, and not of the hipster variety.
The "improved whisky cocktail" was basically everything I could hope for in a mixed drink: strong, not too sweet, substantial, highly drinkable. Did I mention strong? :) Really enjoyed reading through the rest of the cocktail menu, too. These people know what's up.
We went all out on the food, pairing the lamb burger with a side of Mac and Cheese. Heavenly. The kind of burger you could easily inhale without putting it down. Really, the only problem you'll have is trying to pace yourself.
The truth is I don't remember if we had dessert or experimented with other cocktails. We left that happy. Friendly and prompt service. Excellent atmosphere for late evening, but it would probably be a great time during the day too, especially on days when you're hoping "late evening" would just start already around 1 o'clock.
Clover Club is one of the classiest bars in Brooklyn. Â Opened by Julie Reiner, one of the pioneers of craft cocktail culture in NYC, it follows in the capable footsteps of her Flatiron Lounge and Pegu Club, yet is distinct with its own style.
The space is handsome, elegant, and very tasteful. Â They work that lovely old-fashioned vibe well, down to the refined attire of the staff. Â Walk in and imagine yourself stepping back a century or so.
The hostess will greet you. Â Have a seat at the long bar and interact with the capable bartending staff. Â Or at the cushy banquettes facing the bar. Â There are tables near the front, where the doors are thrown open in pleasant weather and you could sit al fresco. Â There is also a lovely Parlor room with its own bar, plush couches, and a fireplace; not always open and sometimes closed for private parties.
Clover Club has notable hours for a cocktail lounge. Â On most days of the week, it opens at noon and stays open until late. Â On weekends, it opens even earlier to serve brunch, staying open again until late. Â Weekdays through late evening are wonderful times to visit Clover Club; it is quiet and uncrowded; even better because they offer happy hour, where select cocktails, beers, wines, and foods are just a fraction of their usual price. Â A reason to visit during prime hours are the live bands that play here on many late evenings without cover.
If you wonder why you'd visit a cocktail lounge in the middle of the day, their fine food menu can be convincing. Â The food is New American and inventive, and the selection sufficiently diverse to offer something for everyone; the diversity had me doubtful they could execute it all well but I've seldom had anything I'd call a disappointment. Â My favorite is the seasonal sweet pea crostini, which exemplifies their fresh ingredients and deft preparation. Â High quality and seasonal, the food is well worth making a very good meal out of, obviating the need to eat elsewhere before arriving here for drinks. Â Or order just a few as a fitting accompaniment to their remarkable cocktails.
And those cocktails are truly the reason to be here. Â The periodically changing cocktail menu is a pleasure to read. Â Separated loosely into styles, each section provides a brief preamble. Â Certain old styles like swizzles and cobblers are offered. Â Their vegetable section gives some attention to a class of ingredient not often represented. Â Like any respectable cocktail lounge, specific requests can be made, whether for classics or more obscure drinks of yore.
Clover Club's cocktails are among the best that NYC offers. Â Balanced, delicious, and beautifully presented, these are just fantastic drinks. Â They are worthy of the wait to create, and well worth the price. Â I've tried the majority of their cocktail menu over multiple visits and they are reliably superb. Â Combined with a gorgeous setting, excellent food, and extended hours, its unsurprising that Clover Club is a star cocktail destination in NYC, and one of my favorites to go to.
Great place to go if you want a utterly amazing cocktail you could only replicate if you knew how to smoke ice appropriately without having your freezer smell like hickory. I love this place for the simple fact that they make classy, cool drinks, without the stiff lip. Don't go if you want three cheap drinks, go if you want one delicious and satisfying one.
I totally agree with one yelper who mentioned its a great place to bring out of towners.
Clover club is the perfect fancy-cocktail bar. (Although be sure to try Hotel Delmano in Williamsburg too. They are tied for first place in my heart).
They have a massive, expensive cocktail menu and I've never tried one I didn't like.
A great place to bring friends visiting from out of town if you want to impress them with the delight that is fancy-foodie-Brooklyn drinks. An especially good night in my book starts at Clover Club and ends at Zombie hut. Nothing like going from $13 basil-infused flavor explosion in your mouth to $5 blue alcoholic slushie! Seriously, it's the best.
